Layering, Quilting and Finishing9. Sew the two 48” x WOF pieces together and trim to make one 48” x 60” backing piece.

10. Press the quilt top and backing well. Layer backing (wrong side up), batting, pressed quilt top (right side up), and baste. Quilt using stitch in the ditch to anchor the front and back. Stitch in the ditch, around the outside, and echo stitch on the Hexagon blocks. Use the Sashiko motifs to quilt the Fabric B sashing. Trim excess batting and backing when quilting is complete.

Binding11. If choosing cross grain binding, cut the ends of the five 2 ½” x WOF Fabric E strips at a 45-degree angle and sew end to end. If choosing bias binding, sew the nine 2 ½” bias cut strips end to end. Make one continuous piece of binding about 200” long. Fold in half lengthwise and press wrong sides together. Sew the binding to the front of the quit, raw edges together. Turn the folded edge to the back, and hand stitch in place.

From Blue Water Striders (B), cut: • (10) 3 ½” x 6 ½” • (7) 6 ½” x 12 ½”

From Ecru Water Striders (C), cut: • (2) 12 ½” x 12 ½”

SewingSew using a ¼” seam allowance with right sides together (RST) unless otherwise indicated. Press seams as shown by the arrows.

Hexagon Blocks1. Mark ¼” seam intersections on the back of all hexagons with a pencil dot (Fig. 1). Arrange 56 Pre-cut Hexagons in eight sets of seven (Fig. 2); seven hexagons will be extra. Lay out one set of seven hexagons. Sew together in three rows using partial seams, starting and stopping with a backstitch ¼” from the raw edge. Press seams open.

2. In the same manner, join rows by stitching individual sides of adjoining seams. Reposition each pair so the next seams match by folding the previous hexagon in half. Make one hexagon unit from each set of seven, for a total of eight (Fig. 3).

From Ecru Mums (D), cut: • (3) 12 ½” x 12 ½”

From Charcoal Mums (E), cut: • (5) 2 ½” x 42” cross grain OR • (9) 2 ½” bias strips to equal 200”

From Ecru Netting (F), cut: • (3) 12 ½” x 12 ½”

Backing (Your Choice), cut: • (2) 48” x WOF

Appliqué3. On the right side of the fabric, draw a line ¼” from the outside edge of each hexagon unit (Fig. 4). Press to the wrong side along the line. Tip: Spray starch can help stabilize edges and create a crisp folded edge.

4. Prepare the 12 ½” x 12 ½” Fabric C, D and F background pieces by folding in half in both directions and lightly pressing to mark the center (Fig. 5). Using the folds as a guide, center the hexagons on the selected background (Fig. 6). Pin well or baste to the background. Hand or machine appliqué according to your personal preference.

6. Mark Column 3 on each side to align with the seams in Columns 2 and 4. Pin and sew the columns together, matching seams and marks; press seams as shown. The joined columns should measure 42 ½” x 48 ½”.

7. The Fabric B sections were designed to highlight the Sashiko design included. For traditional Sashiko, the design would be embroidered on the quilt top using long running stitches, before layering and quilting. The beauty of this design element is that it could also be used along with traditional quilting to add beautiful “Big Stitch” quilting to these areas of the quilt. Transfer the decorative Sashiko designs to the Fabric B sections as shown on page 3. Stitch before quilting or as part of the quilting after the piecing and layering are complete.

8. Pin and sew the two Fabric A-3 ½” x 42 ½” border rectangles to the top and bottom, pressing toward the borders. The pieced top should measure 42 ½” x 54 ½”.
