What does it mean to be called? Are only certain Christians

“called” to specific tasks like preaching, teaching, or doing missionary work? If the answer to that question is yes, are all the uncalled Christians free to do whatever they wish with their lives so long as what they choose doesn’t violate any specific command of Scripture? It seems many people have this concept of God’s calling, but I do not agree with that philosophy.

I believe God has a calling for EVERYONE who is a Christian. He does not just save us and then say, “I’m not calling you to any specific task. So you just go do whatever you want to do as long as it doesn’t involve anything sinful.” NO! God does not do that! Every one of us is carefully, lovingly designed by God with a specific purpose in mind. We call that purpose God’s will for our lives.

God’s will for your life could be one of the traditional callings like preaching,

teaching, or missionary work, but it could be something very different from those traditional ministries. It could be God’s will for you to work in a factory or on a construction crew. He could want you to work in the medical field or serve in crisis situations as a first responder.

His will could be for you to be a farmer or a musician or an attorney or a financial planner. God’s plan for your life could be for you to sell real estate or be a stay-at-home mom who raises godly children and later uses those

same skills to operate a home-based childcare center. The important thing is that you find God’s will and do it!

You see, God would like to fill this world with people who are His witnesses. If you are a Christian, God wants to use you to shine His light

and tell His story wherever He places you. He may place you in a factory, on a construction site, in a professional office, or keep you in your home as a homemaker. The important thing is finding where God wants you and being faithful there.

God’s will for you may change as you move through life. I started out as a music major in college but eventually felt a call to preaching ministry. After graduating from college I pastored for twenty years,

then felt clearly led to come to HSBC to serve in the field of Christian education.

My friend Frank Vaughn on the other hand began his career as a machinist/tool-mold maker. But after working for fifteen years in that profession, he felt

The Association forBiblical Higher Education

God is doing exciting things on the campus of Hobe

Sound Bible College and Hobe Sound Christian Academy! For five consecutive years we have increased in enrollment and closed in the black. But even more importantly, God has sent us a fantastic group of students who have a heart for God and ministry. I recently spoke to our social deans and was thrilled to hear them say this has been an exceptional freshman class when it comes to character. I am happy to share with you—our alumni, supporters and prayer partners—what God is doing in the lives of our students! As always, we are deeply grateful for your support.

This issue of The Torch focuses

on our Professional Studies Department. This is a topic close to my heart because I mingle with students constantly and see the pressing need for biblical teaching as a foundation for biblical living. Some of the students in this department are called to secular education but want to receive a biblical foundation before confronting the challenges of a secular university. Others feel called directly to the secular workplace but seek to know what they believe, why they believe it, and how to share it in that setting. Some are still pursuing a calling from God and simply need a place to get core educational courses and Bible classes until they find more specific direction. We have a passion to instill biblical values within each of these students.

Give God your head. It is our mission to teach our students the truths of God’s Word and how to apply them in every aspect of life. We want to expose them to the many evidences that support the reliability of the Scripture and give them confidence in the face of a cynical world. This is why we have hired some of the most qualified professors available who also are deeply committed to biblical values. We want to teach them the core academic subjects from a Christian perspective and give them a thoroughly biblical philosophy of life, not merely a working knowledge of the Bible.

Give God your heart. Head knowledge alone is not sufficient, however. While Christianity is intellectually sound, it must be internalized on a spiritual level to be truly embraced and experienced. We want our students to come to a crisis point at which they completely surrender their lives to Christ. This is why we place godly mentors in front of them and cultivate an atmosphere of spiritual vitality through revivals, camp meeting, campus church, chapel, and prayer and Bible study small groups. It is our passion to see our students grow in grace and the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ!

Give God your hands. When the head has been filled with knowledge of God’s Word and the heart has been enflamed with a

department preparing the student for further education?

It helps students adjust to college life and the rigors of higher education. Should they choose to go on somewhere else, they have already taken those first steps in understanding what college is. As a Bible college one of the biggest roles

we play is providing a student a solid foundation in Bible

and theology to go into an increasingly hostile

world of secular education. Secular universities are very anti-Christian, and we can give them a way to defend their faith. Additionally, it prepares them to share their faith in their environment.

Aaron Clyde graduated from HSBC with an

associate of arts in 2012 and went on to pursue further

education in the medical field at a secular university in Pennsylvania. He told of one of his science p r o f e s s o r s standing in front of a class of mostly sophomores and saying, “If you’re still clinging to c r e a t i o n i s m at this point in your

education, you are clearly refusing to accept all the scientific evidence, and you will make biased and poor scientists. You should just get up and leave right now.” Thankfully, Aaron had been given a solid biblical foundation, and his faith remained strong.

How do you envision this de- partment preparing a student for life?

One of the things we actively pursue in the Professional Studies Department is bringing students to an understanding that they are called to be fulltime Christians even if they are not called to a career ministry. In fact that is what God expects of every one of us. He intends for them to develop their gifts and talents to the very best of their ability and to use that in their whole life to build up the kingdom of God. It prepares them to go back and work a secular job and have the tools to assist in their local congregation—to teach a Sunday school class, to give a Bible study, to sit on a board, and to engage in their world and local church with a Christian biblical worldview.

What are some examples of students who have built successful academic or vo- cational careers on the foundation of this program?

Neil Shira does not have a distinct call to fulltime ministry. He works at a diesel mechanic shop. He has led people to Christ and has been a solid Christian influence in that environment. Neil Invests in the young people in his local church and in his community. The biblical and theological foundation he received here has equipped him.

Hugh Wade graduated from the Professional Studies Department with a degree in aviation in 2014. He is currently serving as an airline captain

in his home country of Belize and was hired by the government as a consultant to help review and rewrite the country’s aviation standards. As a

result, new airlines such as Southwest Airlines and West Jet have begun servicing the country of Belize.

Skye Turner, a Professional Studies graduate (2015) who is studying at IUPUI, shared that an HSBC chapel service with Tim (HSBC) and Becky Keep helped shape her understanding of how to share her faith. “They talked about missions in such a tangible, human way—a way in which mistakes were okay to make, and how outreach isn’t always easy or perfect in our eyes, but how God blesses our feeble efforts,” she said. Skye has been able to share her faith at her university using the tools she was given at HSBC. She told of meeting a young man involved in a homosexual lifestyle who was embittered against the church and God, and how the Lord helped her to be an example to him. “I know you are a REAL Christian,” he told her. Recently he contacted her and said he had prayed for the first time in many years! Skye has also shared her faith with atheistic professors and has been able to incorporate her Christian faith into class presentations. Skye said, “I’m incredibly thankful for the ways God is using me to be a light for Him every single day.”

As chairman what is your personal vision for this de- partment?

I love the process of mentoring and discipleship. If there is one thing I know it is that I am clearly called to the work of discipling other people. Many students have inherited the view that there are two types of Christians. The first are those who have this great

LAYING AFOUNDATION OF FAITHAn Interview with Mr. Jonathan Stratton, Chair of the Professional Studies Department

What is the Professional Studies Department?

The Professional Studies Department prepares students to go into a professional occupation—occupations not distinctly related to ministry. We do that through two-year degrees in areas such as aviation, business, media, and secretarial science—preparing students to go on to trade school, vocational school, or a secular university. Each of those degrees has a Bible core giving a foundation in Bible and theology. A general education core covers standard education classes general to all higher education. Students may also choose a minor that focuses on their particular area of interest.

How is it distinct from other departments?

Hobe Sound Bible College is unapologetically a biblical training school. As such, most of our degree programs focus on training students specifically for career ministry. The Professional Studies Department plays an important role in training students who do not feel called to a career ministry. It can prepare them for a life of ministry to fulfill their God-given

calling in a secular setting.

Describe the student best suited to this department.

This department is useful for students who already know their

calling in the secular work force—in medicine, as an engineer, or in some other vocation that would not be specifically ministry related. They can come here and take basic education and get a foundation in Bible and theology to prepare them for going into that environment. Secondly, this program benefits students who do not really know yet where they are headed in life. This can be a perfect place for them to begin to explore that and to get a clear understanding of who they are and the path down which God is leading them.

It seems to happen quite consistently. I think every semester there are students who come to the realization they are supposed to go on to a specific ministry department. For some of them that happens after a year. But there are a number who complete a two-year degree and then turn around and finish a four-year degree in one of the ministry programs.

How do you envision this

Living in South Florida means ocean breezes

and sunny days. We never close for a snow day or get trapped in an ice storm. But we do get visited by hurri-canes.

The campus has never experienced significant damage from a hurricane, and we have never had a hurricane-related injury. In the fifty-five years of our existence, only six storms have even directly impact-ed this area.

Hobe Sound Bible Col-lege holds the safety of its students very seriously. Ev-ery precaution is taken to ensure their well-being. As Hurricane Irma approached in September, the dorm students were evacuated to Pell City Bible Methodist campground in Alabama. That was not on the school schedule. In fact one ser-vice of the fall revival with Rev. Clair Sams was held on Tuesday evening before canceling the meeting to leave the campus. However, God used the evacuation to bond the students and to provide spiritual growth. Even though Irma changed course and did not directly hit us, the experience af-fected the students.

The twenty-two hour bus ride to the campground was their first adventure. Then

Fox News channel WBRC heard about the arrival of the students and came to interview them. Jordan Wi-ford said, “It gave a plat-form for the school and for the campgrounds we were staying on to share about Christ.”

During the week, the stu-dents played games, held prayer times, and helped a family move into their home. Josh Modlin said helping unload the mov-ing truck after traveling all night was definitely a bond-ing experience. Freshman Brittney Thornbury said, “I got to know a lot of my classmates better, and it be-gan friendships that I truly cherish.”

The daily school schedule tends to divide students by major. Being on the camp-ground rearranged every-one. Eileen Cole said, “It definitely helped (bond us) because we spent so much time with everyone rather than our own groups that we are with at school.”

God gave traveling mer-cies to the students and spared the campus from any major damage. After a day of cleaning up limbs and taking down storm shutters, it was back to the routine schedule. But con-nections have been made that will last a lifetime.

Dr. Mark Smith Heads Columbia International University

On July 1, 2017, Dr. Mark Smith became seventh president of Columbia Inter-national University in Columbia, South Carolina. Dr. Smith graduated from Hobe Sound Bible College in 1988. He served

as president at Ohio Christian University for eleven years, increasing enrollment from 400 to approximately 4,600 stu-dents. Dr. Smith said it is the nearly one-hundred-year-old reputation of CIU for Bible-centered learning and world evan-gelization that drew him there.

“My whole life has been about being involved in ministry and missions,” Smith said. “It was important for me to stay true to what I felt God had called me to do, and that is prepar-ing a new generation of ministers, missionaries and minister-ing professionals for the day that we live in.” Dr. Smith’s inau-guration will be during the CIU Homecoming in November.

Dr. John Enyart Receives Honor

On October 17, the Arts Council of Martin County awarded Dr. John Enyart the Mar-ties Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts. Dr. Enyart served as Chair-man of the Music Department of Hobe Sound Bible College for seven years and gave violin lessons to hundreds of students. The mission of the Arts Council is to inspire participation in and a passion for the arts in the com-munity. Congratulations to Dr. Eny-art on an award well deserved.

Counseling Trip

Dr. Andrew Graham and thirteen counseling students joined 7,000 others in at-tending the American As-sociation of Christian Coun-selors’ World Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, in September. Over the course of four content-packed days, the students heard from plenary speakers such as Dr. John Ortberg, Dr. John Townsend, and Dr. Richard Blackaby and chose from 175 workshops led by many of the top Christian counsel-ors in the world. After com-pleting a presentation and reflection paper, students are eligible to receive one credit hour for attending. During the trip one student reflected: “I feel like I’m positive that this (a counselor) is what I’m supposed to be.”

Faculty and Staff Transitions

Several changes happened this summer with new faculty coming and others changing positions. At HS Christian Academy Scott Blackmon and Joel Veyon are now teaching junior high. Natasha Hausman is moving into the position of kindergarten teacher as Alana Ryder takes maternity leave. HSBC welcomes Rev. Aaron Hamilton as the new chair of the Ministerial Department and as Director of Finances. Paul Gagnon is now bookstore manager as Robert Booth moves fulltime to the academy. Kara Gumbiner has come as the administrative assistant for Institutional Advancement and as webmaster. Molly Spruill serves as director of financial aid. The familiar face of Joan Stetler can now been seen daily in the administration building where she is serving as her husband’s secretary. Elizabeth McMillan is the new Director of Admissions and Academic Secretary.

Rev. Sidney Grant is the new chair of Intercultural Studies after the retirement of Joy Budensiek. Lucas Ryder now chairs the Music Department with Tim Cole taking his former position of registrar. Jon Stratton is now chair of Professional Studies, and John Beardslee is the new Dean of Men while continuing to serve as Director of Activities. Paul

Missions Trip — Rev. Sidney Grant, Alex Camposeco, and Jordan Wiford traveled to Tacana, Guatemala, in September. The trip was comprised of four objectives: preaching, teaching and training, planning ministry expan-sion, and ministering to the spiritual needs of the leaders. Rev. Grant spoke in a pastor’s conference while Alex and Jordan ministered to the children

and youth. Jordan Wiford said, “A highlight of the trip was seeing the young people really soaking in what we were teaching them and them asking us questions…, and seeing two couples get saved, and another man talked to us about getting saved.” Four buildings in Tacana collapsed from the September earthquake in Mexico even though the town is almost twenty-four hours from the center of the earthquake. Continue to pray for the people of this area, especially God’s children who are sharing His love with those around them.

Stetler continues as Director of Public Relations and is also serving as Director of Institutional Advancement. Rob Loper has added Director of Ministry Formation to his title of Work Director.

Colin Gardner is providing maintenance and will be the supervisor of the Addison Student Center. Julia Cole now teaches all of the academy music classes and directs the junior high and high school choirs.

We welcome all of these men and women to our ministry and to their new positions.Dorm Renovations – Dozens of hours were spent this summer in upgrading both dormitories. God leading him to quit his job and go to the mission field. He followed God’s call and served fourteen years in Haiti. When those years were ended, he returned to the USA and worked for eleven years blending work as a toolmaker with serving as Caribbean Field Director for Hope International Missions. As a result of Frank following God’s will, he has been a blessing to far more people than he ever imagined possible.

Every Christian has a call from God! Jesus included all Christians when He said, “You are my witnesses.” He included all Christians when He said, “Go ye into all the world and preach (proclaim) the gospel to every creature.” He included all Christians when He said, “You are a light, and you are the salt of the earth.” Whatever profession or vocation you may have, you are a Christian first. Your primary purpose for being in this world is to share the love of God and the hope of salvation. Your profession offers you the opportunity

to come in contact with people and serve them while sharing the love of Jesus Christ through your life and witness.

Having said all of the above, I should point out that every Christian young person should give prayerful consideration to and be open to a call from God to be involved in fulltime Christian service. The reason I say that is very simple. Anyone with the natural aptitudes and appropriate opportunities can be a farmer, an attorney, a factory worker, an insurance salesman, a computer programmer, a doctor, or any other secular profession. The circumstance with fulltime Christian ministry is vastly different. You must be a Christian to be a pastor, a Christian school teacher, a missionary, or a church musician! That requirement narrows the field of candidates dramatically among the young people of any generation. Every Christian young person should pray with the prophet Isaiah, “Here am I, Lord; send

me.” If God calls that young person to a “secular profession,” then He obviously wants them to be a Christian witness for Him in that role. We must never forget, however, that Jesus urged His followers to realize that “the harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few.” And He urged them to “pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth laborers into his harvest" (Luke 10:2).

It is our purpose here at HSBC to instill in our students a missional attitude exemplified by the Apostle Paul when he used his profession as a tentmaker to enable him to share the gospel with more people. It is our prayer that our students will take that same missional mindset with them as they leave our campus to make an eternal difference in the lives of the people they serve! Knowing Christ and making Him known is not only our motto, we pray it will be our mode of living!

passion for Christ, we are called to go and share with the world what God has done and what He wants to do. We want to train our students to do ministry in today’s world. We have been commissioned by Jesus to go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature, and that is not just for trained pastors! We are to share our faith in the universities, in the workplace and in our neighborhood. This is why each of our students is given a Christian service assignment. Our goal is to launch them into a life of ministry. We are all called.

The Professional Studies Department at Hobe Sound Bible College is preparing quality Christian

lay-persons who will serve on church boards, teach Sunday School classes, lead a church youth department, direct an outreach ministry and advance the Kingdom of God wherever they live. Please pray that God will continue to help us accomplish this important mission!

calling and in some sense have a little bit of superiority because of that. The second are those not called into fulltime ministry. One of the things I try to emphasize to students in my department is that just because they are not called into fulltime ministry does not mean they are second-rate Christians.

Neither does it give them a pass to say, “I am not called to fulltime ministry. Therefore, I get to do my own thing.” The core of this department’s vision is to help every student understand clearly that wherever they go and whatever they do in life, part of God’s calling is to live and do their very best in the kingdom of God. We need to come to an understanding that whatever God has called us to, we need to do it to the glory of God.

Summer Music Groups

Three groups traveled throughout the summer to represent HSBC. Once again, our groups distinguished themselves musically, profes-sionally and spiritually. Legacy included Tim Anderson, Tyrel Hurst, Ben Deeter, and David Yancey with Nate and Karra Becker sponsoring. Harmony was made up of Trae Bates, Eileen Cole, and Andrea Case with Tim and Julia Cole sponsoring. Renewed was Si-las Nix, Bryan Robledo, and Joel Veyon with Paul Stetler sponsoring. The groups min-istered in approximately 100 services and participated in youth camps as song leaders, accompanists, special singers, devotional leaders, preachers, etc. Thank God for His travel-ing mercies and for anointing the ministry of these groups.

Enrollment

We are happy to report that enrollment is up in every cat-egory this fall! Our combined college headcount (including on-campus and online students) is 279. Our academy en-rollment stands at 229. This means we are providing qual-ity Christian education to 508 students total. Our college campus FTE (Full-Time Equivalent) increased from 106.7 to 114.58. We had a nine percent increase in campus freshmen enrolled this fall. Our fall online enrollment increased by forty percent. We are thankful for continued growth!

Fall Revival

Hobe Sound Bible College gives a special thanks to Rev. Clair Sams, our speaker for the fall revival. Rev. Sams came down to Florida even though Hur-ricane Irma was approaching. He minis-tered to us in the Tuesday night service

and did an excellent job. The remainder of the revival had to be canceled and the campus evacuated. Thank you, Rev. Sams, for your ministry and for being willing to come under the circumstances.

INTERCULTURAL STUDIES

Life is comprised of transitional junctures that affect every fiber of

our being. Each juncture has learning moments and lesson applications. Someone once said, “Every promotion is a demotion.” While this sounds somewhat degrading to the position and prestige seekers, there is a principle of “educational moments” at every transitional juncture. Life experiences are teacher’s anecdotes that effectively connect pupils to the world of learning lasting lessons.

As a boy growing up in the Bay Islands of Honduras, my community was deprived of educational opportunities. Consequently, in my formative years my learning abilities were almost handicapped. I was about nine years old before I was enrolled in a mandatory formal government school. At first for me it seemed all hope of learning was gone. My parents were beside themselves because they wanted me to learn. I once overheard my private tutor say to my parents, “The chance of Sid’s learning abilities are very slim.” My parents even tried to send me to Belize to live with a grand-uncle (my dad’s uncle) to give me another chance. That did not work out, so they were stuck with me.

Providentially, the teachers in the new government mandatory elementary schools in my hometown were God-fearing people. My elementary teacher

took an interest in my educational success. She not only encouraged me, but mentored me until learning became a passion. I recall one of her sisters saying to me, “Sid, we are proud of you, and we have great hopes that you will succeed academically.” Little did she know, it was the boost I needed to continue in the world of learning!

As the years have passed and education became part of what God has called me to become involved in, learning and teaching are always intertwined in my ministerial activities. Leaving the administrative and leadership role of a missions’ organization may appear downgrading to some. However, entering the classroom to teach young people has the potential of enhancing and expanding the passion to equip dedicated educators—regardless of their field of service.

Knowing Christ and making Him known is not just an academic and public relation cliché at Hobe Sound

Bible College. It was drafted from the heart of men who not only loved God, but desired to make Him known according to Acts 1:8. Consequently, the general educational program offered at Hobe Sound Bible College is designed to equip anyone who may not have a specific ministerial defined calling. Its objective is to prepare young people to serve God in the overlooked areas of ministries—professional lay-leaders and ministerial-gap-fillers. This reality was drilled in my mind during my college days at Hobe Sound. It was said, “Learn all you can while you can, because God has a place of service for a prepared person.” I’ve found that to be true.

The question remains, what are the components of this kind of preparation? There are contributing stepping stones and core initial steps that should be defined and developed from a spiritual and educational perspective. The former is the enabling factor for the success of the latter.

These stepping stones and core initial steps are:

Purpose—A person’s educational development becomes a passionate pursuit following the discovery of God's purpose for his or her life. It places a person on a path to prepare and to readily serve God.

Plan—Christian education is a process of research that reveals resources and tools to set in motion a plan for successful ministries. These plans are incremental and practical. They are comprised of short-term achievement for long-term advancement. Sometimes failure becomes the fuel for fruitfulness while faithfulness remains intact.

People—Dr. Howard Hendricks wrote a book, Teaching to Change Lives: Seven Proven Ways to Make Your Teaching Come Alive. In it he emphasized the importance of investing in people’s lives with an interest that is intensely personal. That is, “…teaching is much more than professional. It’s also intensely personal—and, in fact, a passion….”1 Additionally, “The effective teacher always teaches from the overflow of a full life…. [Teachers who] stop growing today, stop teaching tomorrow…. You cannot impart what you do not

possess. If you don’t know it—truly know it—you can’t give it…. As long as you live, you learn; and as long as you learn, you live.”2

If our teaching is for academic prestige and intellectual exercise, the result becomes academic futility. People and their potential in the Kingdom of God are the primary purposes of education. Robert Coleman in his book The Master Plan of Evangelism gives eight elements from Jesus educating his followers.3 Each step is biblically based, logically presented, and chronologically practical. They are: selection—choosing men who made themselves available for His teaching will; association—identifying and relating with those we teach; consecration—developing character by pointing students to radically serve Jesus by assisting each person to completely surrender to the will of God; impartation—equipping students with the tools for excellency and effectiveness in ministry; demonstration—ensuring that each student we teach is provided with a platform of practical ministry where they come, grow, serve, and eventually go to spread the gospel and serve in the world; delegation—discover, develop, and delegate assignments

for the purpose of nurturing character and competence; supervision—creating a cultural environment wherein students learn intentionally, serve freely, and share openly—done through the academic mechanism of spiritual and ministerial accountability; and reproduction—transformational teaching that is translated into real life that perpetuates the principles of truth learned.

Priorities! Education is not an optional choice of academic institutional activities. It is the crankshaft that keeps the mechanism of the great Commission of Christ turning and moving in an advancing direction. Contextually, it is God’s way of teaching, transforming, transmitting, and tasking His people with the job of perpetuating His Kingdom purposes. Therefore, from the cradle to the grave to the throne room of glory, it behooves us to take intentional interest in students by investing in their lives and imparting the absolute truth of the Word of God.
