HistoryEgbe Hospital was founded in 1952 by SIM(Serving in Mission, a non-denominationalProtestant mission, originally named Sudan

Interior Mission) led by missionaries Dr. and Mrs.Campion. It is strategically located in the small town

of Egbe in Nigeria on a major intersection betweenthe cities of Ilorin and Lokoja in Kogi State.

Over the years, the hospital has become amulti–service medical complex with an

affiliated Nurses Training School, Midwifery School and Doctor’s Postgraduate Residency Program.

In 1976 the entire medical complex was transferred by SIM to a Nigerian mission organization,ECWA (Evangelical Church Winning All – formerly Evangelical Church of West Africa), and

the hospital was renamed ECWA Hospital Egbe. By 1986 Nigerians occupied all staff positions, although a few SIM missionaries were assigned to the hospital throughout the ensuing years. Thehospital is currently managed by ECWA and although SIM has about 100 missionaries in Nigeria there are none at ECWA Hospital Egbe at this time.

As a 121-bed facility, ECWA Hospital Egbe is comprised of 68 buildings situated on 33 acres. Itcurrently has a staff of 91. In addition to the ECWA Schools of Nursing and Midwifery, the medicalcomplex includes:

• Two operating theatres• Maternity ward• Under 5’s clinic• Eye centre• HIV/Aids clinic• Laboratory, pharmacy and X-ray facilities• Out-patient department• 3 in-patient/surgical wards• Chapel with 3 pastoral staff

The hospital has a significant impact on the physical and spiritual well-being of the region. Today, many of the ECWA churcheswere established by people who met Christ at ECWA Hospital Egbe.Hundreds of lives have been saved that otherwise would have perished; both physically and spiritually.

Status

ECWA Hospital Egbe is the only multi-service health care facility within a 100-mile radius that has a Doctor’s Postgraduate Residency Program and a School of Nursing and Midwifery. Continued accreditation of the Schools of Nursing and Midwifery requires specific numbers of patients, patient beds, and senior resident medical and surgical consultants. The staffing of medical and surgical consultants is alsonecessary to attract patients, ensure adequate care, and to provide a teaching facility for postgraduate doctorsand specialties in general medical practice. The hospital has not had a senior medical consultant since 2008.It has, however, continued to care for a large patient population.

Infrastructure

With 68 buildings contained in the fenced and gated hospital complex, the infrastructure is significant. To revitalize the complex, it is not necessary to build new buildings. The focus will be on upgrading existingbuildings and relocating some departments to maximize efficiency. There are approximately 12 staff residenceswhich require a range of general maintenance and renovation, as well as re-roofing. Water sources, electric linesand power generators are in place but not well maintained. The roads within the complex require grading toaddress significant erosion. General clean-up and trimming will offset the overall appearance of neglect and deterioration.

Vision for the ECWA Hospital EgbeThis Christian hospital has been a shining light in this rural area for almost 60 years and it is now in need ofoutside support to revitalize it for the next 60 years.

Our mission is: • To revitalize the hospital by placing staff, equipment and systems in harmony with ministry and business principles spreading the gospel and providing superior medical care and training to the region.

To accomplish this we will: • Recruit qualified Nigerian medical, administrative and maintenance personnel and missionaries to work alongside the Nigerian medical director, administrator and maintenance personnel as consultants. • Upgrade the hospital complex infrastructure; ensure appropriate medical equipment; re-establish effective laboratory, pharmacy, surgical and out-patient services. • Install internet and accounting software/hardware; restore consistent electrical and water supply, and explore solar power options.A key component of the revitalization efforts is to ensure the ongoing accreditation and future sustainability ofthe hospital beyond the project’s completion. To achieve this goal, priorities have been established throughpartnership with ECWA and SIM in the areas of:

• Funding • Infrastructure upgrades • Staffing and recruitment • Delivery of water and electricity • Medical equipment upgrades • Computer technology

Project BackgroundBackground

In 2002, the Campion family, and other missionary doctors that had served at the hospital, visited for a week-long celebration of the hospital’s 50th anniversary. During that time Egbe community leaders, hospital staff, and former patients spoke of the hospital’s medical and spiritual significance to the region.

In 2008, the community hosted a Centennial (100-year) Celebration marking the arrival of the first missionary to the area. Many testimonies were given by former hospital employees and community leaderswho spoke of the life-changing impact the hospital had through its missionaries and hospital staff in the livesof the Egbe people and surrounding communities. It was at this time several of us began to ask the question:

What would be required to revitalize the medical complex to ensure its continued accreditation, sustainability and evangelistic outreach to the area?

In November 2009, a Discovery Team was formed to methodically address this question and to devise a strategy to restore the hospital complex. Members on the Discovery Team included representatives fromECWA, SIM, the hospital personnel, and Egbe community. Prior to the meeting, interviews were conductedwith hospital department managers to identify areas of greatestefficiency and need. In addition, a review of the hospital andhousing infrastructure was conducted to determine restructuringrequirements. Following the meetings, representativesreviewed the team’s findings with their respective boards. TheDiscovery Team engaged the participation of current and formerhospital staff, Egbe town leaders and local government, ECWAchurch leaders and residents in the surrounding areas. All parties expressed agreement to move forward with the revitalization efforts.

In early 2010, steps were taken to establish the Revitalization Project under the umbrella of SIM. With over100 years of mission experience, SIM’s reputation as a sending agency offers prospective candidates anddonors the assurance of stability and maturity. The formal project approval process includes approval fromthe SIM Nigeria field office, SIM USA and International; ultimately resulting in Board of Governor approval. The SIM project documents and ECWA’s written agreement confirm the project’s partnership andcommitment.

We plan to proceed with clearly defined goals and objectives, measuring results frequently, and communicating the progress with open accountability.

Water and Electricity

ECWA Hospital Egbe currently receives water from a combination of boreholes and two large reservoirs. The delivery of non-intermittent, clean water to patients, staff and students is essential.

Revitalization efforts would focus on guarding this asset, ensuringthat any leakages or damages to structural walls are addressed.

The provision of stable electricity is necessary forthe delivery of medical services and surgery.

Revitalization efforts include a review of current generatorsystems and the introduction of some solar power and battery

back-up systems.

Opportunity to Transform LivesSIM and ECWA are passionate about training the staff to be Christian witnesses by providing compassionate and excellent care to their patients. Trained chaplains share with hundreds of patients inthe waiting rooms and provide inpatient counseling and follow-up. The 200 nurses and midwives in training, annually, have a unique opportunity upon graduation to demonstrate their faith through their witness as employees in other hospitals.

The hospital revitalization project is founded on meeting both physical and spiritual needs. The goal is to:

1) recruit and raise up dynamic Nigerian leaders who will demonstrate and mentor Christian values in providing excellent health care services;

2) partner with SIM, ECWA and the Egbe community to demonstrate unity in responding to physical and spiritual needs;

3) provide evangelistic outreach through outpatient and inpatient services; and 4) partner with local clinics to improve health care delivery and to share the Gospel.

To date we have enlisted a prayer team that includes retired missionaries, former employees of the hospital, and representatives from health care agencies who receive regular updates. We look forward to partnerships with international-based churches who wish to explore short-term mission opportunities and project sponsorship.

Recruit Nigerian and Missionary Consultants; begin hospital and housing upgrades;complete equipment inventory and initiate purchasing; complete laboratory needs analysis;begin reconfiguring Out Patient Department; install internet/accounting software and hardware;determine electrical and water supply needs.

Complete hospital and housing infrastructure upgrades; complete installation of technologyplatform; develop partnerships with other medical teaching facilities; ensure staffperformance plans and training programs are in place.

Establish partnerships with medical teaching facilities for internship, placements etc.; expand service to include specialties.

Confirm sustainability systems; ensure appropriate accountability and reporting mechanismsare in place; prepare to transition out of project; adjust mentoring program to reflect transition goals.

Accountability & SustainabilityAccountability

To ensure long term accountability, the project team is recommending the formation of a Boardof Advice that would include members drawn from major donors, ECWA, SIM Nigeria andEgbe area representatives.

The Board of Advice would operate independent of the Hospital Board and functionas a forum of high level guidance in matters linked to the project. This model hasproven effective as demonstrated by the current Discovery Team. Financial accountability and report publication would occur through partnership with SIMNigeria’s Treasurer, regular shared updates and website postings.

SustainabilitySustainability measures have been built into the project to ensure that the

hospital will maintain high standards into the future. The hospital has evidenced a favorable contribution from operations over the past years

(excluding the impact of capital expenditures). When missionary consultants are on-site, the hospital will realize a greater positive impact on revenue. The recruitment of on-site qualified staff and

visiting specialists will enable the hospital to provide specialized care andsurgery. This will distinguish the hospital from others, attract patients, andgenerate income. Training senior residents will contribute to sustaining a high

level of care.

The project leader, Don Campion, and ministry consultant, Michael Vines, are both businessmen buildingefficiency and cost effective systems into daily activities.

Upgrading the laboratory and pharmacy will generate income and act as a sustainable source for the hospital. Likewise, a re-modeled out-patient department, where the majority of patients are seen, will raisepatient confidence, thereby generating more traffic and revenue.

TimelinesProgress on the project over the next three years will be measured against clearly defined timelines. Focus on years fourand five will be sustainability, and ensuring appropriate partnerships and training are in place. Track the progress that has already begun at www.egbehospital.org.

Medicine & Ministry: Healing the Whole PersonThe need is great. The vision is clear. The challenge is before us. Will you join in meeting this need? Thisexciting project is not a start-up but a commitment to take a functioning medical complex that has served thousands in a rural region and revitalize, rebuild, and assist with leadership, standards and systems - torenew ECWA Hospital Egbe’s impact as a beacon of healing and ministry for years to come.

Over the years many of supporters have donated funds, medical equipment and supplies. Many missionaries have spent the majority of their lives building ECWA Hospital Egbe, others have come for afew weeks to train and it is on this strong foundation together, and for the glory of God, we embark onthis project.

Another non-profit organization currently very involved at Egbe is Health Education and Literacy Providers, Inc. (H.E.L.P.) with an orphanage, school, ministry, and borehole digging for clean water all focused on serving Fulani herdsmen. H.E.L.P. has missiontrips four times a year to Egbe which provides many synergies with the Egbe Hospital Revitalization Project. www.helpwestafrica.org

Maybe you have access to medical equipment or have the ability to share this project with the perfect candidate or maybe your passion is prayer or you’re a doctoror nurse. Wherever your skills and interest may lie, we’d love the opportunity toexplore together how God could use you in the revitalization of ECWA EgbeHospital.

As the first missionary child born at Egbe Hospital, Betsie’s heart for Egbe and its people was established at an early age. Summers spent observing in the operating theatre, working in the maternity and pharmacy gave Betsie a unique glimpse of medical missions as a youth. Her administrative and project management skills, gained through employment with the Office of thePremier of Ontario, community-based organizations, educational and municipal library servicesare an asset in her role as project coordinator. Her shared vision and passion for revitalizing thehospital, while honoring the work of her parents and other founding missionaries and Nigerians, parallels her desire to demonstrate her faith and excellence in service. Betsie and her husband,Dave, and two children live in Ontario, Canada.

As a consultant and Chief Financial Officer, Michael has enjoyed opportunities to helpministries improve their operations through system design, re-engineering, key projects, leadershipdevelopment, financial management, forecasting and vision casting. Michael brings this experienceand his ability to provide leadership, focus, and energy to the Revitalization Project. Michael continues to pursue several entrepreneurial business opportunities that support Kingdom purposes, while attending a local church where he serves and co-teaches an adult bible study. Michael andhis wife Dana, together with their three children, reside in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Don grew up in Nigeria where his parents were medical missionaries and founders of Egbe Hospital. Over the 18 years he lived in Nigeria much time was spent with the Nigerians where hedeveloped a love for Africa and its wonderful people. His love for mission aviation and bush flyingled him to build an aviation business for corporate aircraft in Florida. Don and his wife, Sueanne, have been to Egbe several times recently and he refers to it as a privilege to be project leader in therevitalization of the hospital, working with a team, and striving to renew medical excellence, developleaders and enhance physical and spiritual healing in this region.
