Under normal conditions, thebody’s internal thermostat pro-duces perspiration that evapo-rates and cools the body whenthe weather is hot. However, inextreme heat and high humidity, evaporation is slowed and thebody must work extra hard tomaintain a normal temperature.Elderly people, young children, and those who are sick or over-weight are more likely to becomevictims of extreme heat.

The duration of excessiveheat plays an important role inhow people are affected by a heatwave. Older adults who do nothave air conditioned homesshould take advantage of air con-ditioned senior centers, etc.Spending at least two hours perday in air conditioning significantlycuts down on the number of heat-related illnesses.

Watch for signs of heat-related problems:• Heat exhaustion: Cool, moist, pale, or flushed skin;heavy sweating; headache;nausea or vomiting; dizziness;and exhaustion. Body tempera-ture may be normal, or is likelyto be rising.• Heat stroke: Hot, red skin;changes in consciousness;rapid, weak pulse; and rapid, shallow breathing. Body tem-perature can be very high -some-times as high as 105 degrees F.If the person was sweating fromheavy work or exercise, skin maybe wet; otherwise, it will feel dry.

    How to Treat aHeat Emergency

Call 9-1-1• Heat stroke: Heat stroke isa life-threatening situation.Help is needed fast. Call 9-1-1or your local emergency number.

Move the person to a coolerplace. Cool the body. Watch forsignals of breathing problems.• Heat cramps: Get the personto a cooler place and have himor her rest in a comfortable posi-tion. Lightly stretch the affectedmuscle and replenish fluids. Donot give liquids with alcohol orcaffeine in them.• Heat exhaustion: Get the per-son out of the heat and into acooler place. Remove or loosentight clothing and apply cool, wetcloths, such as towels or sheets.Give cool water to drink. Makesure the person drinks slowly.

    What to Do DuringExtreme Heat

    • Slow down. Avoid strenuousactivity. Reduce, eliminate orreschedule strenuous activities.High-risk individuals should stayin cool places. Get plenty of restto allow your natural “coolingsystem” to work.• Avoid too much sunshine.Sunburn slows the skin’s abilityto cool itself. The sun will alsoheat the inner core of your body, resulting in dehydration. Use a

sunscreen lotion with a high sunprotection factor (SPF) rating.• Postpone outdoor gamesand activities.• Avoid extreme temperaturechanges.• Stay indoors as much as pos-sible. If air conditioning is notavailable, stay on the lowest floor, out of the sunshine.• Keep heat outside and coolair inside.• Conserve electricity notneeded to keep you cool. Dur-ing periods of extreme heat, people tend to use a lot morepower for air conditioning.• Vacuum air conditioner fil-ters weekly during periods ofhigh use. Air conditioner filterscan become clogged or filled withdirt, making them less efficient.• If your home does not haveair conditioning, go to a pub-lic building with air condition-ing each day for several hours.Air conditioned locations are thesafest places during extreme heatbecause electric fans do not coolthe air. Fans help sweat evapo-rate, giving a cooling effect.

    • Wear loose-fitting, light-weight, light-colored clothingthat will cover as much skinas possible.• Protect face and head bywearing a wide-brimmed hat.• Drink plenty of water regu-larly and often, even if you donot feel thirsty.• Take frequent breaks if youmust work outdoors.• Use a buddy system whenworking in extreme heat.• Avoid drinks with alcohol orcaffeine in them.• Eat small meals and eatmore often. Large, heavy mealsare more difficult to digest andcause your body to increase in-ternal heat to aid digestion, wors-ening overall conditions. Avoidfoods that are high in protein, such as meats and nuts, whichincrease metabolic heat.• Avoid using salt tablets un-less directed to do so by a

physician. Salt causes the bodyto retain fluids, resulting in swell-ing. Salt affects areas of yourbody that help you sweat, whichwould keep you cool. Persons onsalt-restrictive diets should checkwith a physician before increas-ing salt intake.• NEVER leave children, petsor compromised adults alonein closed vehicles. Tempera-tures inside a closed vehicle canreach over 140 degrees F withinminutes. Exposure to such hightemperatures can kill in minutes.~~Adapted source: http://www.disastercenter.com/guide/heat.htmlr

Medicare coverage evenwhen you are not retiredYou’ve made your decision:

although you’re eligible to collectSocial Security payments, you’regoing to keep working and delayreceiving your retirement ben-efits.

But don’t forget about Medi-care. Even if you decide to waituntil after you are age 65 to ap-ply for retirement benefits, mostpeople should apply for Medicarecoverage at age 65. If you’d liketo begin your Medicare coverage, you should apply within fourmonths of reaching age 65.

There’s a fast, convenient, and simple way to apply onlinefor Medicare in as little as 10 min-utes — even if you’re not readyto receive retirement benefits.Just visit the Internet websitewww.soc ia l secur i ty.gov /medicareonly.

At the website, you’ll findmore than just the online Medi-care application. You’ll also findinformation about Medicare, andhave the opportunity to watch ashort, fun video reuniting the castof The Patty Duke Show to tellyou about the ease and conve-nience of filing for Medicareonline.

It’s important to note thatpeople who already receive So-cial Security retirement or disabil-ity benefits do not need to applyfor Medicare; they will be auto-matically enrolled.

There is no additional chargefor Medicare hospital insurance(Part A) since you already paidfor it by working and payingMedicare tax. But there is amonthly premium for medical in-

surance (Part B). If you alreadyhave other health insurancewhen you become eligible forMedicare, you should considerwhether you want to apply for themedical insurance. You maywant to consult with an insurancespecialist. To learn more aboutthis and other Medicare consid-erations, read our online publica-tion, Medicare, on the Internet atwww.socialsecurity.gov/pubs/10043.html

Class is in session withSocial Security WebinarsYou’ve may have been on the

web, and you may have attendeda seminar. But have you everattended a “webinar?” We rec-ommend that you do.

Social Security offers a se-lection of webinars atwww.soc ia l secur i ty.gov /webinars. You’re invited to at-tend any of them, anytime. Classis always in session — pastwebinars are available for you toview at any time. The informa-tion can be valuable, but the costis free.

There are webinars on ben-efits for wounded warriors, ap-plying for retirement online, ex-tra help with Medicare prescrip-tion drug costs, and more.

The two recent webinars onthe page are on timely topics.

    *How Some Public Em-

ployee or Teacher Pensions MayAffect Social Security Benefits. In this webinar, we walk youthrough how the Windfall Elimi-nation Provision (WEP) and Gov-ernment Pension Offset (GPO)may affect Social Security ben-efits of workers whose employ-ers do not withhold Social Secu-rity taxes from their salary, suchas some school systems andsome local, State and Federalgovernment agencies.

    * Ticket to Work. Do you re-ceive Supplemental Security In-come (SSI) or Social SecurityDisability Insurance (SSDI) ben-efits? Thousands of SSI andSSDI beneficiaries have learnedhow to stay in control of theirbenefits while enriching their livesthrough employment. You canjoin them by participating in a 90-minute Work Incentive SeminarEvent (WISE) Webinar to learnabout available incentives, includ-ing those offered through theTicket to Work program.

Scams are no jokeNo one wants to fall victim

to a scam artist or identity thief. You may think you’re safe

simply by not carrying your So-cial Security card with you and

not providing your personal infor-mation over the Internet or byemail. But scam artists have be-come shrewd. Never reply to anemail claiming to be from SocialSecurity and asking for your So-cial Security number or personalinformation.

    Identity theft is one of thefastest-growing crimes inAmerica. If you think you’vebeen the victim of an identity thief,you should contact the FederalTrade Commission (FTC) atw w w. f t c . g o v / b c p / e d u /microsites/idtheft. Or, you cancall 1-877-IDTHEFT (1-877-438-4338); TTY 1-866-653-4261.

Some people who receiveSocial Security and Supplemen-tal Security Income (SSI) ben-efits are often victimized by mis-leading advertisers. Often, thesecompanies offer Social Securityservices for a fee, even thoughthe same services are availabledirectly from Social Security freeof charge, such as getting a:* Corrected Social Security cardshowing a bride’s married name;* Social Security card to replace

a lost card;* Social Security Statement; and* Social Security number for achild.

Some direct scammers sug-gest that Social Security is in direfinancial shape and that peoplerisk losing their Social Security orMedicare benefits unless theysend a contribution or member-ship fee to the advertiser.

If you receive or see whatyou believe is misleading adver-tising for Social Security services, send the complete mailing, includ-ing the envelope, to: Office of theInspector General, Fraud Hotline,Social Security Administration,P.O. On July 4, Americans cel-ebrate the signing of the Decla-ration of Independence. TheDeclaration was officiallyadopted by the Continental Con-gress in Philadelphia on July 4,1776, although Congress formallydeclared independence fromGreat Britain on July 2, and theDeclaration wasn’t signed by all56 members until August.

Some other facts about thefounding document of the UnitedStates that you may not know:• There’s a message on the back. No, it’s not an invisible treasuremap (as in the Nicholas Cagemovie National Treasure). Thewords “Original Declaration ofIndependence, dated 4th July1776” appear on the reverse sideof the document on display in theNational Rotunda, at the bottomand upside down.• About 200 copies of the Decla-ration were immediately pro-duced by printer John Dunlap fordistribution through the 13 colo-nies. Of these original “Dunlapbroadsides,” 26 still exist.

‘We hold these truths to be self-evident...’

As we celebrate the birth of our country, let’s give praise to our13 original states, the colonies of North America that declaredindepence from Great Britain! Included are the state capitals. Extrabonus points if you can match the capital city to its state.

    • At the bottom left corner of theDeclaration is an unidentifiedhandprint. Historians speculatethat it’s the result of thedocument’s being rolled up fortransport and handled by various
