No cricketer since Douglas Jardine has polarised opinion quite like Muttiah Muralitharan. His bowling action creates an optical illusion of throwing. For the believers, he's among the greatest to ever spin a ball. For the doubters, he's a charlatan undeserving of the game's greatest records, responsible for changes in the laws that they think have legitimized throwing. What was undeniable was his ability to turn the ball sharply on just about any surface, and bowl the sort of marathon spells that would have seen a lesser man retire after five seasons rather than 18. Whether Sri Lanka played at home, on pitches where he was often unplayable, or overseas, Murali was the go-to man for half a dozen captains. He seldom disappointed. He has lots of tricks up his sleeve since a ball can be spun in many different ways. He utilizes the three main axes of the ball to do many things.

What is the science behind spin? A cricket ball, like anything else, has three main axes about which it can spin. Each spin axis has a different effect on the flight of the ball through the air and a different effect on the way the ball bounces. The three axes are perpendicular to each other. The first axis is vertical, pointing to the sky, and the other two are horizontal. The second axis points along the pitch towards the batter. The third axis points across the pitch. A ball can also be spun about an axis that is inclined at an angle to the three main ones, in which case it will have a component of spin about each of the main axes.

A ball that spins about a vertical axis will swerve to the left or right through the air (like a golfer's hook or slice shot) depending on the spin direction. There is no kick when it bounces since there is no preferred direction in which it can kick.

A ball that spins about the second axis does not swerve at all through the

air. However it will kick sharply to the left or right when it bounces, depending on the amount and direction of spin. The ball kicks in the same direction of motion as the top of the ball. Drop a spinning ball vertically onto the pitch and you will see why.

Bangalore: Often there is a hiccup in the BJP party either due to internal stifle or due to criticism from opposition parties. Presently BJP is scuttled amidst mining scandal. Who all are the most scared that BJP might lose its power? The newly elected candidates who were not in leadership position earlier are obviously the ones wanting to make quick money through crooked ways. Not all ministers or corporators are insincere. The elected candidates who are sincere and those who are in power for a longer period do not vie for quick money. When already justice is not done to the tax collected from the city, BBMP proposes petty ideas to increase its income. Will anyone like the idea of paying a parking fee to the BBMP for his/her own vehicle that stands in front of his house?

Karnataka Government is spending lavishly on ministers by sending them on agricultural trips thinking it is going to yield results.

Farmers depending on river Cauvery for irrigation are worried over the low water level in Krishna Raja Sagar reservoir built across the river. Proper management and allocation of resources are missing. What will foreign trips by ministers gain for the state?

Government paid guest houses, tender allocations, etc are misused by relatives and close knits of ministers. There is no visibility in utilizing the tax money collected from public.

In the past few months, there has

always been some new projects such as road widening suggested to the government to benefit mainly the government authorities. Unless new projects like this are proposed and implemented, where is the source for making money for corporators and other elected members.

Between 2003 and now, over 30 million tonnes of iron ore has been illegally mined and exported from Karnataka causing a huge revenue loss. Congress and JD-S claim that the illegal mining scam is worth around Rs.60,000 crore (Rs.600 billion).

If we study the performance of any newly elected government, the first two months will be somewhat smooth to avoid any criticism. The next two years will witness more biased way of functioning with more and more tax money misused. At the end of 3 years, the government will be in a state of readiness to leave in case of any challenge from within the party. By then enough money would have been earned by elected members from top to bottom.

According to this calculation, it is the crucial period for newly elected ministers and corporators to earn as much money as possible and be ready to exit if in case BJP is out of power and also to collect money for campaigning for the next election.

MIND WORKS-44Hardiness and HappinessBy UK Athikkal

-----------What is hardiness? It is a personality characteristic that links the stress level of an individual with his/her proneness to illness. Hardiness in fact combines three characteristics; commitment, control and challenge (3 Cs).Commitment: This develops when one approaches life with a sense of meaning and active involvement in one's work.Control: This is feeling of being able to influence events.Challenge: This is a view of change as an opportunity for growth rather than a threat.Psychological experiments have demonstrated that people with these characteristics, those with a “hardy personality”, would be less likely to become i l l when under s t ress. Presumably, they are less likely to perceive stress as harmful and they are better equipped to cope with it if they do.Certain studies on people with hardy personality have indicated that they are unusually resistant to stress. The hardy groups seem to hold a world view that consisted of three traits.

1. They had a sense of personal commitment to self, work, family, and other stabilizing values.

2. They felt that they had control of their lives and their work.

3. They had a tendency to see life as a series of challenges, rather than as a series of threats or problems.

How do such traits protect people from the effects of stress? Persons strong in commitment find ways of turning whatever they are doing into something that seems interesting and important. They tend to get involved rather than feeling alienated.

Persons strong in control believe that they can more often than not influence the course of events around them. This prevents them from passively

seeing themselves as vict ims of circumstance

Finally, people strong in challenge believe that fulfillment is found in continuous growth. They seek to learn from their experiences, rather than accepting easy comfort, security, and routine.

Hardiness and HappinessGood and bad events occur in all lives. What separates happy people from those who are unhappy is largely a matter of attitude. Happy people tend to see their lives in more positive terms, even when trouble comes their way. For example,Happier people tend to find humor in disappointments. They look at setbacks as challenges. They are strengthened by losses. In short, happiness tends to be related to hardiness. It is a general personal characteristic, not simply a reaction to circumstances. This column is contributed by U K Athikkal, Life Skill Coach and Certified N L P Trainer. Topspin or backspin results when the ball spins about the third axis. A topspin ball dives down towards the pitch faster than a ball without spin, and it bounces at a reduced angle since it kicks forwards when it bounces. A backspin ball tends to float through the air and kicks up when it bounces since it tends to kick backwards, causing the ball to slow down more than a ball without spin. The actual result depends on both the amount of spin and the angle of incidence. If a non-spinning ball is incident at an angle of about 20 degrees to the horizontal, then it will slide along the pitch until it bounces, at about 22 degrees to the horizontal. If the ball has backspin then the trajectory will probably be different. It depends on the ball speed and launch angle or on where the ball lands. In general, a ball with backspin landing at the same spot will be incident at a lower angle, say 18 degrees, and it will bounce up at about 20 degrees. But if the bowler sends down a slower backspin ball and if it

lands at an angle of incidence of say 40 degrees, then the ball will start to slide along the pitch for a while and then grip the pitch before it bounces. This will cause the ball to slow down a lot during the bounce, so it will bounce up quite steeply, say at 50 degrees. The formula for the bounce angle is:

Slope of bounce angle = (vertical bounce speed) / (horizontal bounce speed)

where slope means the same thing as tangent in trigonometry. So, the effect of backspin or topspin depends on whether the ball slides throughout the bounce (as it does at low incident angles) or whether it gets a chance to grip the pitch, as it does at high angles of incidence.

Is it too much and confusing? If you happen to be someone like Muttiah Muralitharan on the field, you will perfectly experience the above facts.

In a tiny corner of a giant country a poor farmer is about to lose everything. His brother has a plan to win it all back!

‘Peepli Live’ is a satire, which revolves around a villager from Central India called Natha, his brother Budhia and their family. The family is about to lose their land because they are unable to repay a loan, when, they hear of a government programme which offers the family of any farmer committing suicide a compensation of rupees 100,000 ($2000). The older brother convinces his sibling into agreeing to commit suicide. This sets in motion a chain of events which finds Natha in the eye of a storm. The local big wigs, the state government, high ranking

bureaucrats, federal ministers and the national media all become stakeholders in the mad circus that erupts.

This is the story of India t o d a y. R u r a l s o c i e t y, t h e bureaucracy, media, politics and life.

Many a times Violence broke out in Shimla, Kashmir, Delhi etc after an incident of alleged cow slaughter. Once, a mob of nearly 4,000 people from local villages tried to torch two mosques and a madrassa and vandalised shops owned by Muslims. A police officer sustained injuries when he was controlling the mob. On many occasions, the police had registered cases and arrested locals belonging to the minority community, after seeing beheaded cow and its body parts packed in gunny sacks.

Chola King believed to have killed his own son to provide justice to a Cow, following Manu Needhi. The belief that beef eating was brought to India by Muslims is not acceptable. Most of the serious researches into the sacred Hindu book, Vedas, show that Beef eating was a norm in Vedic times!! Dr. B.R. Ambedkar in his speech asked, “The Untouchables Who were they and Why they became Untouchables.” “Did The Hindus Never Eat Beef?” Swami Vivekanand while addressing a meeting in California, USA declared, “You will be astonished if I tell you that, according to old ceremonials, he is not a good Hindu, who does not eat beef. On certain occasions he must sacrifice a bull and eat it.”

The concept of non-violence came up after 8th century Brahmanism projected Cow as its icon. Since then Cow is the

projected as sacred, as 'mother' and gradually large sections of Hindus started regarding her so. Knowing the sentiments of Hindus, most Muslims Kings prohibited cow slaughter. Babur in his will to Humayun writes, “Son, this Nation Hindusthan has different Religions. Thank Allah for giving us this Kingdom. We should remove all the differences from our hearts and do justice to each community according to their customs. Avoid cow-slaughter to win over the hearts of the people of this land and to incorporate the people in the matters of administration. Don't damage the places of worship and temples,

which fall in the boundaries of our rule.”

Once during freedom movement, Mahatma Gandhi offered beef to his Muslim guest in Sevagram Ashram on the festive day of Bakrid. The guest refused to eat beef saying that he would not have any non vegetarian food in the Ashram as the Ashram practices non violence. What a
