A new lighting collection accompanies jewelleryby designer Jason Chart Davies, who joinedLazerian in 2008 to urther develop his range oorganic, hand-crated sculptures and unctionalobjects.
Jason patiently hand-crats jewellery andcatwalk accessories using sheet plastics and tinybrass ttings. Seeking to expand on his range odesigns, collaboration with Lazerian has allowedhim to explore the potential o automatedcutting technology, which was realised with anew lighting range, created rom sheet plastic, cut using a computer controlled (CNC) router.
The new range o sheet plastic lightingcomplements a range o plywoods lamps, whichwere created by Richard Sweeney and LiamHopkins. The design utilises CNC cut components, which are hand nished and glued to ormorganically inspired geometric structures.
Liam Hopkins
am Hopkins was born in Manchester, England.an early age, curiosity led him to experimentth everyday objects, and through reverse-gineering he began to learn about the naturetheir construction and material use. In 2001,
am enrolled on Three Dimensional Design atmeside Technical College in Ashton-Under
ne, where he explored the constructivetential o many dierent materials.
e went on to study a BA(Hons) in Threemensional Design at Manchester Metropolitanniversity, discovering a niche in the design andaking o urniture. The colours and structuresnature inspire his work, guiding the aestheticd material choices.
2006 Liam set up studio Lazerian in Manchester, gland, where he develops and creates his
wn experimental designs, collaborating withher designers to produce work under thezerian brand, as well as working on uniquemmissions or clients worldwide.
Richard Sweeney
Richard Sweeney was born in Hudderseld,England in 1984. He discovered a natural talentor sculpture at Batley School o Art and Designin 2002, where he began experimenting withsheet materials including paper, cardboard andlaminated wood. This led him to the study oThree Dimensional Design at the Manchester
Metropolitan University, where he concentratedon the hands-on manipulation o paper to createdesign models and unique sculptures.
Richard's practice combines the disciplineso design, photography, crat and sculpture, resulting in a varied output o work includinggraphic design and public sculpturecommissions. Combining hand-crat withcomputer aided design and CNC manuacturingtechniques, Richard seeks to maintain anexperimental, hand-on approach, utilising theunique properties o oten mundane materialsto discover unique sculptural orms.
Jason Chart Davies
Jason explores three dimensional jewelleryorms by working hands-on with fexiblesheet materials such as paper and plastic. He has always gained satisaction rom theconstruction o unique sculptural structures, cutting and bending his chosen medium byhand into three-dimensional orms, which have
an organic quality to their appearance. Winnero the Gold award in Fashion Jewellery in theGoldsmiths Cratsmanship Awards 2008, he hasalso exhibited in Liverpool, Manchester andNorway.
Jason's creations are bourne o hands-oninvestigation into material, combined with theuse o repeated components and organicallyinspired geometry. He has applied this approachto create ashion accessories, kinetic sculpturesand lighting, and is currently developing designsor urniture at Lazerian Studio.
Lazerian is a creative practice that began in
2006, set up by Liam Hopkins, a Manchester
born designer-maker.
Based in an ex- hat factory in Manchester, the
practice is focused on the creation of functional
objects through playful investigation of materials
and processes.

he design was generated using computertware, which converts virtual three-mensional models into fat layouts ornstruction in paper. The componentyout (illustrated below) was plotted ontoper, then hand cut and glued to orm the

Mensa table collection
zerians experimentation with plywood over thest two years has culminated in the creation o a
ew collection o urniture. Starting rom a hands-n exploration o plywood, Richard Sweeney andam Hopkins created a series o models withrious connecting methods, including boltingd sel-interlock. With the use o a CNC (computer
umerically controlled) router, these models wererther advanced to nd structural orms capablesupporting weight.
om this process emerged a distinctive collectionurniture, which makes use o both raw and
minated birch plywood. The designs emphasisee importance o material to Lazerian- the basis odesign starts with the material itsel, and eortse made to incorporate the unique eatures oe material into the design, and to ully integrateethods o hand crat with new manuacturingchnologies.

Lazerian muralby Andy Singleton
Artist and illustrator, Andy Singleton has completeda hand-drawn mural spanning a ve metre length owall at Lazerian Studio, Manchester.
Singleton describes himsel as dedicated and aperectionist when it comes to creating his intricateillustrations. Inspired by both nature and the manmade world, he oten merges the two to createcomplex visions o fowing, mechanical landscapes.
Born 1983 in Nottingham, Singleton was raised inWakeeld, West Yorkshire rom the age o three.Currently living in Manchester, he graduated romBA Hons Illustration & Animation at ManchesterSchool o Art in 2006, showing a series o hand-cutpaper illustrations at his graduate show, which werelater exhibited at Urbis, Manchester. He is currentlyproducing a new set o artworks, which will orm aseries o T-shirt designs and prints, to be distributedvia his upcoming label, Ex Virtus.

Light Modulator
The Light Modulator emerged as part o a collaborationbetween Liam Hopkins and Richard Sweeney. The aim othe project was to explore the properties o thin, birchplywood in the creation o modular orms, the componentso which could be cut using a CNC router. The use ohands-on modelling as a means o testing and developingthe orm was employed rom the outset. By manipulatingplywood directly, the behavior o the material was usedto develop morphology. Factors such as grain direction, fexibility and strength were integral to the resolution othe nal construction.
Material properties inormed the development ocomputer models, which were used to create physical, paper maquettes beore construction in plywood. Bymaintaining a material-led approach, the computer canbe more eectively utilised in the creation o orm, asan awareness o physical constraints has already beenestablished.
From the computer model, a set o organic shapes wasderived, each corresponding to a single polygon. Themodel was developed with a symmetrical orm to reducethe number o components to a set o twenty our uniqueshapes, thus simpliying construction. The pieces were
hand assembled using small bolts and wing nuts.
Embracing both hand-crat and machine process allowsthe exploration o ideas, which utilise the unique aspects oboth approaches, unrestricted by adherence to dogmaticprinciples and realising the creative potential o a holisticapproach to design.

Minerals candle holders
The Minerals collection is a series o solid beech candleholders, inspired by traditional laboratory apparatus.
Each candle holder is turned on a lathe rom a pieceo laminated beech, which is then hand nished. Thisis the rst design in the Lazerian range to utilise arecently acquired copy lathe. Similar to a traditionallathe, a copy lathe has the added unction o beingable to trace a prole pattern rom a jig.
With the expertise o resident wood turner, Ron Yates, the potential o the lathe is being urther exploredthrough an on-going process o experimental orm-making, the results o which will be applied in utureprojects.

Equuleus comprises sel-interlocking
plywood components, which are constructedto create a sculptural, hanging mobile.
A series o paper models were created toexplore the potential o the slot-interlock; amethod o joining components without theneed or ttings or glue. The geometry o thesquare and the triangle were used, as theseshapes can be eciently tessellated on aplanar surace- the resulting modules usedto create regular three dimensional ormsbased upon Platonic geometry, or randomree-orm constructions. Once rened, theshapes were cut rom birch plywood usinga computer controlled router.
The concept o growth was an important
infuence, leading to the development oorm, which was inherently incomplete, andwith the addition o urther modules couldcontinue to expand indenitely.
