Welcome to the 5th Annual Working Mans Bull

and Commercial Heifer Sale.First off, we would like to th

ank all of our return buyers as well as those of you who

are

choosing to attend our sale for the first time. We hope

you are as happy and excited with the

cattle program and direction we are offering as we are.

As everyone who fought to stay in the industry over the

past decade: congratulations

for making it through. It is with great optimism that we a

re currently seeing such a positive

turn around in the economics of the cattle industry. We

hope that it leads to strong herds built

on choice genetics, and we are looking forward to work

ing with you to help provide your herd

with what will take it through the future.

We are excited by the addition of cattle in our herd from

Paul Sparling, Mike Earley,

and Edmund & Shirley Kolesar. The focus of these herd

s have always been towards power

and production, and we feel that they will be great build

ing blocks in the type and kind of cat-

tle we breed. While there is a nice selection of bulls su

itable for heifers, the main focus of our

sale is still strong, powerful bulls for use on cows. We

believe in the need for growth, feed

conversion, and carcass yield to stay the top breed in C

anada.

Ponoka Veterinary Clinic has been working with Jim Bleakley and his family at Lazy E Bar Ranching for

many years. We have worked with Jim in establishing a total herd health plan, ensuring that proper vaccine and

vaccine protocols are utilized on a routine basis for both the bulls and the cow herd.

We are responsible for semen testing all the bulls for the sale as well as their herd sires. These bulls are

evaluated on many levels at this time to ensure they all meet sale requirements and Jim’s standards.

Answers to Common Lazy E Bar FAQ’s

• Our weaning weights are actual scale numb

ers, not adjusted weights. At weaning time the

cows are locked up and the calves go back out

to grass for 3 days before being hauled to

pens and weighed. The weaning weights are b

ased on mama’s milk and Alberta grass

alone, we feel it gives up the most accurate ide

a of a cow’s ability to perform.

• The cattle are run on a Veterinarian advised

health program. Vaccine and vaccine proto-

cols are continuously updated to be at the top

of the industry. The bulls will all be vet

checked and have passed a semen test prior

to the sale.

• All of our cows and calves are used to being

hauled, and travel 100-125 miles each way

for summer pasture.

• All replacement cattle, as well as all bulls up

for sale, are freeze branded to ease the iden-

tification of them in the field.

• When being fed, the cattle receive a mix of s

ilage, grain and a nutritional supplement.

This is done under the watchful eye of a nutrit

ionist ensuring strong development and growth

while maintaining the longevity of the feet and

legs. None of the bulls brought for sale have

been hoof trimmed.

• We work with our cattle on regular basis and

cull for both performance and temperament.

This helps us to ensure that the bulls brought t

o our sale every year will be solid long term

investments for your herd.

• Our herd is “what we farm” All of the acres o

f land we own are used for pasture or silage.

Grain for feed is acquired from local farmers in

our community.

• We breed all our cattle to calve in April-June

, allowing them to calve in the field and pas-

ture in a ranch-style environment with as little

intervention as possible. Our goal is to keep

strengthening the tradition of great maternal q

ualities that Black Angus cattle are known for,

by culling out the weaknesses and rewarding

the cows that bring home great calves year

A quick Note about Nutrition for Lazy E Bar Two Year OldsI put together an article last year on protein needs for young bulls and I will reiterate a bit on that point in this salescatalogue. A two year old program does not start with yearlings that didn’t make the cut, but rather with a dedication that bullswill be developed to maturity. This is done for a couple reasons.1.) Two year old bulls can cover a few extra cows. In other words a bull can now breed 3-5 more cows and at today’s price that translates to an extra $675 to $1125 per year income on a performance bull, based on an extra 100 lb. weaning weight. You can spend $1000 more on a two year old over a yearling! 2.) A yearlings need to be fed properly post breeding to compensate for a still growing animal. Most producers will have a few mature bulls and the yearlings get “kicked in with the rest”.

However, the replacement heifers are fed separately so they can “grow” while maintaining a pregnancy, just not theyearling bulls in most cases. Two year olds are already grown and can fit into a mature herd bull pen without getting lost alongthe way.So bulls at Lazy E Bar were fed as yearlings for high lean gain (lots of muscle), so that as two year olds they can putdown fat without a lot inputs. In other words a well-muscled yearling will not melt when put out to work or pasture.
