Vandegrift. “We’re one of basically two millsthat produce Idaho in any substantial vol-ume. We like to think that we produce thepremiere product in Idaho White Pine inthe Sterling and upper grades and theStandard. IWP account for 5 to 6 percent ofour annual production.”Bennett has survived through the years,

said Vandegrift, because “we’re a small,family-owned business in which our com-munications are so good – all the way fromFrank Bennett, our president, to the guythat pulls the dry chain in the planer. We’reable to change fairly quickly to thedemands of the marketplace.”Key personnel, in addition to Vandegrift,

Princeton, Idaho–Since 1939, BennettLumber Products Inc.has re-invented itselftime and again to accommodate changingmarkets and fluctuating economic chal-lenges. The ongoing recession that hasgripped the nation is but one more suchchallenge for this established lumber com-pany to overcome.Bennett Lumber produces numerous

species that are native to the area and haspersevered and actually thrived even inrecent years due to innovative new productofferings and capital improvements whichwill have the company primed and ready torespond when the demand on the lumbermarket fully returns.Jim Vandegrift, Sales Manager at Bennett

Lumber, recently explained the company’scurrent status. Among the many positivedevelopments at Bennett Lumber over thepast year is its new Cedar product, BennettImperial. Vandegrift said, “Bennett Imperialis available in 1x4 through 1x12 and is verysimilar to what you’d consider as a premierproduct home center board. It’s as good asyou can get in a very usable two-face, andwe’ve had a great deal of success with thisproduct in the marketplace.”Vandegrift elaborated that in order to

avoid giving a “detrimental product” to our3 & Better customers, “in the sawmill weincreased our target sizes, both on ourthicknesses as well as our product width. Indoing so, we’re able to garner about 70percent recovery on our Imperial grade, which is usable two-face and about a 30percent recovery on the 3 & Better, whichis still graded to the rough face, as Cedarboards always have been. The Imperial isvirtually skip-free and wane-free on thesurface face, allowing the customer to uti-lize it in applications, either on the roughS1S2E face or the smooth face.”Bennett introduced Imperial this spring.

Vandegrift reported that customers are“enthused about it. Our customers who likethe 3 & Better continue to buy the 3 &Better. Those that are heavily competingwith the box stores, with their customerbase and the smaller retail stores, theImperial is just the absolute best thing theycan have for that. Imperial is very competi-tive in the marketplace.”With Imperial, Vandegrift said the turn-

as a Standard & Better, and then a SelectStructure on top of that. For the marketsthat demand a No. 2 stamped product, wehave one in White Fir. Our Standard &Better and the Premium is slightly higheron the 2 & Better than the Standard. It’s anextremely good product.”Bennett is operating two shifts in both its

mill and planer facility, an increase in laborfrom 15 months ago. “This is still down fromour production capacity, which would beideally 60 hours per shift per week, but weare gaining and I’ve seen the improve-ment,” Vandegrift said. “Our production is50 percent of what it would normally bewith the two mills due to economic condi-tions. “The export market has definitely helped

and we’ve increased our overall presencein the export market from about 2 percentof our overall production to more in theneighborhood of 8 percent. That’s a combi-nation of Pine board exports into Mexico,China, Pakistan and Vietnam.”Capital improvements were also on

Bennett Lumber’s agenda the past year asthe firm invested in equipment and machin-ery improvements in its Clarkston mill, known for its Ponderosa Pine production.“When the U.S. domestic market doesimprove, we’ll be ready to turn the key andget that mill going and turn out some fiberthat’s needed in the marketplace,” addedVandegrift.Bennett’s Princeton mill, according to

Vandegrift, produced twice as muchPonderosa Pine in the last three years thannormal. Bennett is producing predominant-ly 6/4 Ponderosa Pine in Shop and

a r o u n dtime onorders is

the same as any other product. Bennett“has stock on the ground,” he said. “Wedon’t run patterns for inventory; we don’tstock it but we can have a pattern ordercreated and finished within 7 to 10 days, depending on the time of week the order isplaced. We like to run our pattern machinetwo or three days a week, so it is deter-mined when the orders are placed.”Imperial is shipped in the same Bennett

paperwrap as the rest of the company’sproducts. “We take a great deal of pride inthe Bennett logo, and Imperial is in thesame wrap that we do everything in,”Vandegrift said. The company has changed protocol on its

3 Common Ponderosa Pine. Vandegriftnoted, “In our 3 Common Ponderosa aswell as 3 Common Englemann Spruce andStandard Idaho White Pine, product is nowpulled to length. Previously it was all pulledtwo lengths per unit. We made someadjustments in the planer department sothat it is all pulled to length, which definite-ly helps our customer base.”Additionally, Bennett’s premium dimen-

sion products continue to be a strong itemon the market. Vandegrift said, “Our overalldimension volumes are not off that much, even though we’re running morePonderosa than we have in the past. We dohave a true White Fir in 2x4 through 2x10and a Fir/Larch dimension in that samesize. When market conditions dictate, wewill make 2x12 in both items. In White Firwe do both a 2 & Better in our 2x4, as well

els much moreefficiently. Wehad to reinventthe way wemade things inthe mill. Wehad an oppor-tunity to exportdimension lum-ber if we couldmake certainmetric sizes. Ittook a collabo-rative effortbetween sales, our customer, our millwrights, and manage-ment to comeup with a work-ing solution buttoday we are making sizes we neverdreamed of before and are talking in mil-limeters instead of inches – but it is pay-ing dividends. We had a customer whoneeded a plywood backed radiant barri-er panel – as opposed to the more com-mon OSB backed panel – and we said… “We can do that”. Now we have radi-ant barrier plywood panels as part of ourmix. And finally we had to reignite thecompany – the sales staff, the mill staff, and the timber buyers, everybody had toget on board and view our businessthrough a new set of eyes. Although former President John F

Kennedy gets credit for this line from hisinaugural speech; it was actually pennedby George Bernard Shaw and goes:“Some people see things as they areand ask why. I dream things that neverwere and ask why not.” Today we areturning our business upside down andinside out and looking at it from a per-spective we’ve never viewed before. Forexample, in the last two and a half yearswe have participated in trade missionsto Dubai, China and South Korea tolearn more about the export business.

to find new products and markets fortheir wood products. At SwansonGroup Sales we said enough of thisstale economy….it’s time to take a freshapproach to our business….and remem-ber those attributes that make wood thepremiere building product in theworld.…excellent strength to weightratio, ease of workability, depth andrange of uses, and based on renewabil-ity alone it’s the most “green” productone can use. Wood is an awesomematerial and the range of uses for forestproducts is only limited by our own cre-ative thought. So we rolled up our sleeves and said it’s

time to reimagine what we can do andmake. A salesman found a market forsmall squares if we could produce them– not an easy transition for a small logmill – but we looked at our equipmentand found a way to make them andtoday they are a solid contributor to ourbottom line. We looked at our double 4ply line at our Springfield Plywood milland with an adjustment that we call the“double dip” we are able to produce a 4

ply and a 5 ply panel at the same timeand we’re also able to make thinner pan-

housing market has been in a tailspin forthe last six years and the forecast todayis far from optimistic leaving most millsand producers in a scramble to find alter-native markets for their wood products. In the big-picture nothing has greatertake-away for wood products than arobust housing market and so the histor-ical strategy in this industry for gettingthrough the downturns is to hang on untilthe ship is righted and housing bouncesback. But after six years of predictingthat things have bottomed and will startto improve - economists are now takingthe bloom off the rose and starting topaint their prognosis with a realist’s eyeas opposed to an impressionist. Once sawn, the lumber enters intoone of 18 Irvington-Moore dry kilns.Going against tradition of large trackkilns, Durgin and Crowell uses a sim-

more uniform it willbe coming out. Thesesmaller kilns allowthem to custom dryloads to specific cus-tomer requirementswithout under or overdrying. The planer millstands behind itsWeinig/Waco 30XLmoulder along with aYates-American A20-12 planer. Having thebest of both worlds, the moulder is usedfor all the patternstock and high-endlumber. The planer isused to run the cus-tom inline band-sawnmaterial, a wonderfulchange from the all-too-common rougher

head. The latest project at the mill wasthe installation of a new Camfil-Farrdust collection system to ensure thebest air quality for its employees, which provides a better working envi-ronment.Enhance Paneling is the latest inno-vative product offered by Durgin andCrowell, a prefinished VOC free boardthat is ready for immediate installa-tion. been an exciting step. “We have recog-nized the vast potential in the Pacific Rim.The move to expand our operations inChile not only allows Weston to exploitnew product and market opportunities, but also enables our customers to staycloser to the sourcing locations.” Mauricio Bravo has been recently pro-

moted to General Manager of WestonChile S.A. He will continue to overseeprocurement and quality control in addi-tion to further developing Weston’s importand export business. “After my relocation,

our business relationships will grow, andthese will provide for more exciting oppor-tunities for our customers,” said Mauricio.Products from Chile include Radiata S4SFJ boards 1x4-1x12, mouldings and finger-joint blanks. Weston Chile is developingrelationships with local suppliers who lacktheir own export capabilities, providingWeston with attractive, back-up sources ofsupply to satisfy unpredictable customerdemand and guard against supply delays.Weston Chile is also exploring importingcertain high-end Canadian-sourced build-ing products. Mauricio will be representing

Weston this year at NAWLA and looksforward to meeting his many customers inLas Vegas! In addition to Mauricio, Weston attracted

a local industry expert in Chile, RamonFlores, who has extensive experience indeveloping markets for both lumber andplywood. Ramon will be servicing spe-cialty plywood markets in South Americaand the Caribbean while expandingWeston’s sourcing network in Chile,Brazil, and Uruguay. Weston’s product manager, Cinius Lee,

runs Weston’s operations in China. Hetravels there extensively and manages anexperienced local team of Weston’s qual-ity control experts who examine everyoutgoing load. Cinius has developedbroad experience establishing the bestsupply from Weston’s Chinese mills andhe has the cultural insight needed to

effectively manage relationships with com-panies in one of the most exciting marketsin the world. Products from China includedoorframes, primed gesso boards, windowextension, Cedar fence boards and spe-

cialty prod-ucts such asAdirondackchairs andg a r d e nsheds. “Our strate-

gy of placingour ownpeople onthe groundin countrieswe sourcefrom guar-antees theh i g h e s tquality stan-

dards and customer service levels forwhich Weston is renowned. We also havea rigorous testing process,” says Alan. Thelocal experts have a thorough knowledgenot only of manufacturing, materials and

methods, but also of the end uses of thecompany’s products. This understanding iscrucial to ensure that Weston customersget what they want, packaged to theirrequirements and delivered with consisten-cy. Beyond Chile and China, Weston is

actively looking at other resourceeconomies to build a true global network.“We have been successful in bringingmaterials in to the US from global markets, but we see a future in the opposite direc-tion as well,” said Alan. “As part of our

move to develop a global business, wehave also started selling to other marketsin South America and Asia,” said Mauricio. The housing downturn has shifted the

needs and requirements of many cus-tomers in the wood industry; for example, many U.S. buyers of wood components arereluctant to commit to buying full contain-ers. Weston’s inventory in domestic ware-houses allows for prompt fulfillment of LTLand full load orders. Weston also excels infulfilling special requests such as custommouldings and small order runs. Despite challenging economic times,

Weston has been on a growth path intro-ducing new products, further penetratingexisting markets and developing newopportunities. Weston’s updated productportfolio includes oak and mahogany door-jambs, prompted by the increasingdemand for high-end fiberglass doors, andcomposite and cellular PVC components

sold to door pre-hangers. Through 25 years of exceptional

customer service, Weston has builta talented and committed manage-ment team. Alan, and vice-presi-dents Howard Kumer (Sales) andDave Gambell (Operations), haveover 70 years of combined experi-ence working in the lumber indus-try. All of the key principals havedeveloped strong customer andsupplier relationships and are dedi-cated to creating innovative andcost-effective solutions to suit theirclients’ needs. Engrained into the company’s

“family-like” culture are the desire tohelp clients grow and a passionate

respect for all stakeholders. Ultimately, these values manifest into Weston’s goal ofhaving strong, trust-based relationshipswith customers and suppliers. Mauricioand Cinius have done an excellent job nur-turing relationships in international marketsand as an increasingly global company,Weston ensures that strict western stan-dards and company values transcendnational boundaries. In the words ofMauricio, “We try to duplicate key valuesand standards used in North America in allof our international subsidiaries.”

manage their cash better. In some cases, wehave actually gone through and analyzedtheir business and proven to them that theirreturns on investment and market risk expo-sure are less by having the ability to pur-chase from Idaho Timber, competitively, inthe field. This is opposed to ordering carsfrom the mills in the West that could exposethem to four to six weeks in lead time, andconstantly changing markets.”By purchasing from Idaho Timber, cus-

tomers can buy much less and order exactlywhat they want. Plus, the order will arrive thenext business day or two. Ellis noted that hissales team has traveled much more this yearin order to establish this new position (forIdaho Timber), with their valued customers.“Even though our employee base is half of

what it was at the peak of the industry, oursales staff is relatively the same. We’ve con-centrated on maintaining our efforts to serveour customers,” he added. “We’ve visited cus-tomers not only on the sales level, but also atthe senior management level.”Additionally, Idaho Timber has managed to

grow its value-added service and some spe-cialty product offerings. It has also invested innew equipment (such as molders) and pickedup significant business in pattern products ofPine, Spruce and Cedar.“We’ve re-entered the Cedar fencing busi-

ness over the last couple of years, which hasbeen a growing category for us,” Ellis said.“We’ve always been a home center boardsupplier of Ponderosa Pine and Spruceboards, but now we’re providing Cedarboards and patterns to the customer, as

well.”Another significant endeavor Idaho Timber

has undertaken is to become a global sup-plier. Once strictly domestic-focused, thefirm is reaching out, successfully, interna-tionally.“One of the major things in which our com-

pany had always prided itself was beinggood at servicing the U.S. market. We hadglobally acquired products for distributionand remanufacturing, but we certainlyneeded a better sales focus outside theU.S. market,” Ellis said. “Now we’re makingmultiple trips to developed and emergingmarkets. We have been to China, Japanand plan to go to Taiwan, Vietnam andAustralia later this year - to further exploreopportunities to serve those ever-changingmarkets.”Idaho Timber also gained a considerable

amount of business with the newWoolworths-Lowe’s Australia venture.Particularly favored in those international

markets, is the firm’s Southern Yellow Pinedecking. For that market, decking is treatedand stained, and specifically designed andmanufactured. Idaho Timber is also manu-facturing a fencing product from SouthernPine, which is a very heavy profile fencingthat would be unique to the global market. In North America, Idaho Timber continues

to look for “sensible acquisitions in areaswhere we can be environmentally responsi-ble, and areas where we can create marketniches. These would primarily focus on pri-mary sawmills and other manufacturing thatis not commoditized as much as dimensionlumber would be,” added Ellis.Idaho Timber, which began in 1979, main-

tains a sawmilling operation in Carthage,Arkansas, which specializes in 5/4 SYPdecking and 2x4 to 2x12 dimension; and aCedar split-rail fencing mill in Troy, Idaho. The Weiser, Idaho, facility produces boardsin Ponderosa Pine, Spruce and RadiataPine (1x4 to 1x12), Lodgepole Pine (1x4through 1x12), and pattern stock and strips(1x2, 1x3, 2x2). Boise, Idaho–With a slow recovery gener-ally expected following an ongoing persist-ent difficult housing market, Idaho Timber’sleadership realized that to increase thecompany’s marketshare, reinvention of thefirm’s product offerings and services wasnecessary. To achieve that, Idaho Timberembarked on a detailed plan.“We made an attempt to measure every-

thing within our company, as far as efficien-cies and the typical measurements are con-cerned,” said Ted Ellis, president and chiefexecutive officer at Idaho Timber. “We alsomeasured our ability to capture market-share by comparing shipments to housingstarts. We found that our footage shippedby housing start has nearly doubled fromwhat it was at the peak of the housing mar-ket. So, even though our volumes are downsignificantly, we have captured a great dealof marketshare. Many other measurementsimproved significantly, as the focus toimprove in each area continued.“Another way Idaho Timber changed is

while we used to be more of a fill-in suppli-er for some of the major pro dealers. We arenow considered primary suppliers of thosepro dealers. That is a significant change inour position within the market.”Ellis said Idaho Timber made that change

by identifying the “just-in-time advantages”for having inventory. “Our customers werevery aware of their cash position,” he said.“In some situations, they were constrainedand in other situations they just wanted to

The NAWLA TradersMarket® is alwaysvery successful forus in many ways. Ifyou are seriousabout selling andtrading lumber, theTraders Market is the place you need tobe. If I had to pick only one lumber showto attend to sell lumber, the NAWLATraders Market would be the one I wouldattend. It is the most important lumbershow available to the lumber industry andwe look forward to it every year.

in the relationship building process. Gettingto know people, and sharing ideas abouthow to help improve their business resultscan lead to some great dialogue aboutvalue opportunities. I find that most peopleare quite open to sharing when they aren’tpushed to “buy now”, but rather invited tolearn more about our approach in a relaxedforum like NAWLA. Our goal is to meet newpeople and share what’s new in our world.Technology evolves very quickly, so to theaverage attendee there is lots to keep upon. WE make the process simple and easyto understand. We can even introducebooth visitors to our customers while at theshow if they wish. Attendees always find itvery easy and educational to simply dropby the booth and ask how we might be ableto help.
