DescriptionLB Remote I/O modules are used as signalconditioning units between field devicesand control systems. They plug into abackplane system which is mounted ona standard DIN rail.The modules may be plugged in orremoved from a live circuit.LB Remote I/O modules offer advantagesin that they are galvanically isolated, theycan boost and amplify signals, and areeasily mounted as plug-in units. Sincethey are galvanically isolated they do notrequire equipotential earth connectionsnormally encountered with safety barriers.Changes in the power supply voltage donot affect the excellent device performancedue to the properties of the built-inamplifier circuits. Furthermore they rendersystem I/O cards superflous. Wiringbetween them and the system is reducedto a single bus.Light emitting diodes (LEDs) indicate thedevice status. A green LED shows theoperating condition, a yellow LED depictsthe switch status as in switch amplifiers,and a red LED signals alarm conditionse.g. line faults and interruptions. Thisinformation can be accessed from theDCS and PLC via a standard bus.

Substations 1Substations can be connected to processcontrol systems (DCS) and programmablecontrolers (PLC) via standard busses. At each endthere are separate end pieces for supplyingpower and all communication 4.The modules 3The compact size allows high signal packingdensity and all this without the heatingproblems associated with traditional designs.Snap in mounting, utilising the most advancedplastics technology allows the LB Remote I/Oseries modules to be located firmly without theneed for fixing screws. The field connection ismade by a coded Phoenix mini combiconconnector on the top of the module. The systemis so designed that any of the modules can beslotted into any position on the backplane so thatIS terminations are made to suite the wiring andnot the other way around.Up to eight I/O modules 3 plus a power supplymodule can be connected to each backplanesegment and depending upon the moduleTypee, either one, two, or three channels can beutilised.A large range of interface modules are availablefor all applications including SMART/HARTcompatible devices.Power supply moduleTo meet and exceed the EMC regulations aseparate PSU module supplies up to eightLB Remote I/O series interface modules. Foreach backplane segment, one power supplymodule is required to guarantee a smoothregulated power supply.Communications module 4The communications module is the linkbetween the intrinsically safe I/O modulesand the control system. LB Remote I/O series softwareThe LB Remote I/O interface modules have nointernal or external switches or adjustments.The configuration can be done either by thecontrol system or by an easy to use WINDOWSprogram via the local RS 485 port on theLocal Bus backplane. The setup data for everymodule is stored in a non volatile memorylocated within the communications module.Self generating documentationThe free of charge LB Remote I/O seriessoftware uses the configuration data togenerate a full system documentation package.Considerable time and cost savings can berealised by utilising this feature.Plug and play serviceBecause the I/O setup data for every moduleis already stored, should a fault developwithin a module, it can easily be removedand replaced by a standard unprogrammedI/O module.As soon as the new unit is inserted, thecommunication module instantly updates thenew I/O module and within a fraction of asecond the device is back in operation. Thisscenario also applies to the communicationsmodule. However, a download of configurationdata is required either from the control system

The critical areas of concern arethe control system fieldbus and the commun-ications module.The LB Remote I/O series can overcome theseconcerns by offering a ”layered” solution.Redundant fieldbusAn option for ensuring fieldbus communi-cations is to have one communications modulewith two fieldbus connections, thus ensuringan effective redundant link to the controlsystem.Redundant communication moduleThe LB Remote I/O series communicationsmodules can, if required, be placed in parallelto give a higher level of system redundancy.Signal processingThe LB Remote I/O series interface units have aunique way of handling signals to and from thefield.
The LB Remote I/O series I/O modules convertincoming field signals to an internal LB RemoteI/O format. This also works in reverse foroutgoing signals.One function of the communications moduleis to supervise a rapid data exchange betweenall of the I/O modules and itself. At any time,an internal memory within the communicationsmodule, holds all the field signal data.The second function of the memory within thecommunications module, is to allow the controlsystem’s fieldbus to access and exchangeinformation.As the memory is the only interface between theLB Remote I/O and the control system fieldbus,future fieldbus developments in this area can beaccommodated easily.HART communicationThe LB Remote I/O series supports HARTcommunication. If the control system supportsHART communication it is then possible tocommunicate directly with the field devices.In addition to this, a RS 485 connection isavailable on the LB Remote I/O series back-plane which allows the user to access theHART field devices via a PC using standardsoftware.Local intelligenceThe LB Remote I/O series is capable ofconducting certain functions locally, withoutinvolving the external fieldbus connection to thecontrol system. This allows the system to reactquickly to time critical operations. The functionsare limited to redistributing data from an input toone or more outputs and in addition, withanalogue signals it is possible to perform tripfunctions.Line fault detectionAll LB Remote I/O series I/O modules have asophisticated Line Fault Detection System.This feature can be enabled or disabled foreach channel individually.On detecting a line fault on a channel, thefollowing events occur:• Red LED indication on I/O module• The input or output signal is taken to a
pre-determined level• A flag is set within the memory of the
communication module• A relay output within the communications
module is deenergised, allowing the controlsystem to perform an interrupt routine
