e.Republic’s Center for Digital Education has named Lehigh Carbon Community College as a winner of the Digital Community Colleges Survey award. LCCC was one of the top 10 community colleges in the nation that uses technology to improve services to the college community. LCCC was ranked ninth in the category of a mid-sized college which has between 5,000 and 10,000 students. The award reflects a comprehensive implementation of technology supporting the educational institution’s operations, as well as serving students, faculty and administrators. “Technology is being used on campuses and in lecture halls to lower costs and improve student outcomes,” said Alan Cox, Senior Vice President for the Center for Digital Education. “This year’s survey indicates that community colleges are making great strides in using data to improve decisions, providing professional development to assist faculty in the use of technology, and creating robust online and mobile environments for their students. Congratulations to this year’s survey winners.”
LCCC Honored for Technology Services Governor Wolf Visits
Lehigh Carbon Community College On April 17, Lehigh Carbon Community College faculty, staff and stu-dents eagerly awaited the arrival of Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf on the LCCC campus. President of LCCC, Dr. Ann D. Bieber, accompanied Governor Wolf as children of the Early Learning Center warmly welcomed him with a gleeful presentation of songs and colorful signs. LCCC was just one of the governor’s stops along his “Jobs That Pay” tour in Pennsylvania. Wolf was visiting businesses and other entities across the state to
promote funding for manufacturing, technical training and workforce development. His visit coincides with his proposal to focus more on manufacturing jobs, creating a skilled workforce through education and rebuilding the middle class. Wolf has proposed a seven percent increase in the 2015-2016 budget of which LCCC could see $766,000 of the proposed funds. Wolf spoke with students, faculty and staff and praised LCCC for the college’s efforts. He stated LCCC and Lehigh Career and Technical Institute (LCTI) “will power Pennsylvania’s economic engine.”
Professors Jim DePietro and Art Love showcased advanced equipment and discussed their technology programs, projects their students are working on and the importance of automation in manufacturing. Wolf then proceeded to tour LCTI where he held a press conference for the rallying students. “If we’re going to have a future in manufacturing in Pennsylvania, what you learn here is really, really important,” Wolf told students after his visit to both schools.

Special guest, Mr. David Perry, entertained children in the Scheller-Woodman Community Services Center through interactive performances. Week of the Young Child offers seminars for educators focusing on guiding principles for the classroom. This year’s seminar featured integrating STEM/STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Art) programs. The week-long event also offered workshops for high school students and a seminar offering free CEUs, Keystone STARS training hours and much more.

Based on a recent presentation on the mathematics redesign at the International Conference on Technology in Collegiate Mathematics (ICTCM) in Las Vegas, the mathematics redesign has received national recognition and will be profiled by Pearson Publishing in the coming months. Julie Labbiento and Deb Condon were in attendance. Congratulations to Julie, Deb and the entire Math Department.
Several students from LCCC’s Practical Nursing program were on hand to participate with The Miracle League of the Lehigh Valley’s annual Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 11, in Schnecksville. The students were busy hiding eggs, helping children and more during the event. The Miracle League of the Lehigh Valley was created to serve a growing population of children with special needs. Through the efforts of a dedicated board and a caring community, children with disabilities are able to participate in a baseball league of their own.

The win earned the team the number one seed at the Regional Tournament which will be held at Black Bear Golf Club in May. LCCC’s women’s softball team has one more honor to be proud of. Pitcher, Amanda Hess, was selected to the EPAC 1st team and 3rd team All Region XIX. Hess is a graduate of Central Catholic High School and began her collegiate pitching career last year at LCCC.
