There are thousands of reasons why we should lit-erally cry out to God, “Thy Kingdom come!”

One that is often overlooked is the increasing inci-dence of violence against women. Throughout the world, this sickening problem is growing worse and worse. Ascolumnist Bob Herbert recently reported, “A girl orwoman is sexually assaulted every couple of minutes orso in the U.S. The number of seriously battered wivesand girlfriends is far beyond the ability of any agency tocount. We’re all implicated in this carnage because therelentless violence against women and girls is linked atits core to the wider society’s casual willingness to dehu-manize women and girls, to see them first and foremostas sexual vessels—objects—and never, ever as theequals of men” (Charlotte Observer, October 19, 2006).

Part of the problem lies in our willingness as a soci-ety to allow the most vile and degrading and brutalimages to be displayed in video games and on theInternet, leading susceptible young men to waste hun-dreds of hours on this filth, and to believe that the ani-malistic brutality they see is at least somewhat “normal.”

We need to wake up! Why do our leaders fail to havethe “guts” to simply banish such bestial displays, whichdefinitely generate increasing violence against women?

Even back in the 1940s, my mother and herfriends—no doubt like millions of mothers all across theUnited States—had pushed me and dozens of my class-mates to attend “dancing school”—where we weretaught to dance face to face and chest to chest with younggirls barely entering their puberty. We were just little chil-dren who wanted to play baseball and “kick the can.”God does not forbid dancing, of course, but He doescommand us to “flee sexual immorality” (1 Corinthians6:18). Why did our mothers push us into the kind ofsemi-romantic, semi-sexual behavior involved in thatkind of dancing when we were only twelve years old?

I well remember how, at the first private dance Iwent to after taking these lessons, my friend Bob Speckand I kept stepping outside to run around the blockduring the dancing. We came back every few minutesannouncing that we had “run around the block tentimes.” The little girls would exclaim, “Oh that’s great!”

We were so embarrassed at holding these girls in ourarms that we simply took off running—not knowingwhat else to do with ourselves. It would be severalyears before we were truly ready for such “romantic”involvements even in an innocent way. Why were ourmothers pressuring us into this kind of precociousbehavior? And today it is even worse for young men, pressured by society into sexual thoughts and activitieslong before they are in any way ready to handle them.

Why do so many mothers today pressure theiryoung daughters—clear down into grade school—tostart wearing “make-up” and to begin to look “sexual?”Columnist Herbert went on to observe: “We’ve beenwatching the sexualized image of the murdered 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey for 10 years. JonBenet is dead. Her mother is dead. And we’re still watching the videoof this poor child prancing in lipstick and high heels. In a misogynistic culture, it’s never too early to drillinto the minds of girls that what really matters is theirappearance and their ability to please men sexually.”

The U.S. is not alone in its disrespect for women. InChina, an official “one child per family” policy hasresulted in millions of little baby girls being abortedbefore birth, or murdered shortly after birth. A similarpattern occurs in India, where the culture gives strongpreference to male children, and poor families may evenfear having to pay a dowry at the marriage of a daugh-ter. And throughout the Muslim world, women are sys-tematically held down, degraded and often treated asless than human. A new twist on this horrifying prob-lem recently came to light in a report on how militantMuslim terrorists are specifically targeting female teach-ers in Iraq. A recent news report described what hap-pened to a young Iraqi teacher: “Authorities said thatthe young woman, whose name was withheld at therequest of her family for security reasons, had taken ataxi home from the school on Sept. 20. Police discov-ered her mutilated body stuffed in a plastic trash barrelnear the school the next day…. One day after the bodyof the primary school teacher was discovered, two other

ave you been deceived?Nearly all professing Christians

have been given the idea that at deaththey immediately go to heaven with

virtually nothing to do—just “float around heav-en” for all eternity.

These “fuzzy” concepts often makeChristianity seem childish, impractical and unrealto many thoughtful people. And these vagueideas about what happens to Christians in thefuture certainly do not inspire even most church-goers to be truly zealous for God.

But these ideas are dead wrong! Please remember that the only reliable source

for information about Christians’ future is theHoly Bible. God inspired the Bible, and itsprophecies are absolutely working out, even today!Ideas about “floating off to heaven” are simplynot taught by your Bible! Those ideas give a falsepicture of what Jesus Christ preached, and a falsepicture of the genuine Christian “calling”—andof the entire purpose of Christianity! For JesusChrist came preaching “the Gospel of the

Kingdom of God” (Mark 1:14). Matthew’s gospelsometimes calls this the “Kingdom of heaven”—not the Kingdom “in” heaven. The Bank ofMorgan is not “in” Mr. Morgan! Rather, the wordof indicates the one who owns or controls it.Heaven is the place of God’s throne, from whichHe rules His Kingdom!

The early Christians all understood this veryclearly—as we see from dozens of statements inthe gospels about preparing for the comingKingdom of God. We also see this in the book ofActs and the writings of the Apostle Paul.Although—as many scholars recognize—manyof the first Christians were expecting JesusChrist to kick out the Roman occupiers and setup His “Kingdom,” or government, right then,Jesus showed that it was not to be done at thattime. Yet He never said that His Kingdom wasnot to be a literal Kingdom—or government—here on earth.

Notice what Christ told His disciples afterHe was resurrected from the dead. The disci-ples asked Him, “Lord, will You at this time,

restore the Kingdom to Israel?”(Acts 1:6). This would have beenthe perfect opportunity for Jesusto dispel any notion that HisKingdom was a real governmentto be set up here on earth.

Did He do that? No! Rather, Jesus said, “It is

not for you to know times or sea-sons which the Father has put inHis own authority” (Acts 1:7).This certainly confirmed the correctunderstanding that Jesus wouldcome again and set up a world-rul-ing government here on earth. Then, as Jesus ascended to heaven,an angel spoke to the disciples, saying, “This same Jesus, who wastaken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as yousaw Him go into heaven” (v. 11).

In the Gospel of Luke, Jesusdescribed many of the final signsthat will occur at the end of thisage, just before His SecondComing. After describing a num-ber of these earth-shaking events,Jesus said, “So you, likewise, when you see these things hap-pening, know that the Kingdom ofGod is near” (Luke 21:31). Jesusdid not say that the Kingdom had“already” come, or that it was setup in their “hearts”—rather, itwas a Kingdom that would“come” here to this earth.

Countless honest Bible schol-ars know this. But it is very seldompreached! Instead, sentimentalideas about “floating off to heav-en” are normally preached at thedeath of a church member, withno mention that Christ will set upa literal government on this earth!

Edward Gibbon, a renownedsecular historian, described thebeliefs of the early Christians: “Theancient and popular doctrine of theMillennium was intimately connect-ed with the second coming ofChrist. As the works of the creationhad been finished in six days, their

duration in their present state, according to a tradition which wasattributed to the prophet Elijah, wasfixed to six thousand years. By thesame analogy it was inferred thatthis long period of labour and con-tention, which was now almostelapsed, would be succeeded by ajoyful Sabbath of a thousand years;and that Christ, with the trium-phant band of the saints and theelect who had escaped death, orwho had been miraculously revived, would reign upon earth till the timeappointed for the last and generalresurrection” (The Decline and Fallof the Roman Empire, Vol. I, p. 403).

What Will Christ’sKingdom Be Like?

When the soon-comingKingdom of God is set up—ruleddirectly by Jesus Christ, the Son ofGod—what will activity in thatKingdom be like? What will faith-ful Christians be doing after theyare resurrected from the dead (1Corinthians 15:51–52)? How willthe Kingdom be organized? Howwill the resurrected saints interactwith the unconverted humansstill left alive here on earth?

Throughout the Bible, we finddozens of descriptions of Christ’scoming government. It will beorganized in a hierarchal form, ruled from the top down by JesusChrist as King of kings(Revelation 19:16). We read:“Then the seventh angel sounded:And there were loud voices inheaven, saying, ‘The kingdoms ofthis world have become the king-doms of our Lord and of HisChrist, and He shall reign foreverand ever!’” (Revelation 11:15).

The saints at that time sing aninspired “new song,” as they tellChrist: “You are worthy to take thescroll, and to open its seals; forYou were slain, and have redeemed

us to God by Your blood out ofevery tribe and tongue and peopleand nation, and have made uskings and priests to our God; andwe shall reign on the earth”(Revelation 5:9–10). So, Christ’skingdom will definitely be set upnot in heaven, but on this earth. AsGibbon explained, that was whatthe early Christian church—guid-ed by God’s Spirit—believed andtaught. It is not some strange newidea. Rather, this truth was slowly“stamped out” as the early RomanCatholic Church gradually adopt-ed various non-Christian conceptsabout heaven, hell and the natureof the soul. As Gibbon explains:“But when the edifice of thechurch was almost completed, thetemporary support was laid aside. The doctrine of Christ’s reign uponearth was at first treated as a pro-found allegory, was considered bydegrees as a doubtful and uselessopinion, and was at length rejectedas the absurd invention of heresyand fanaticism” (Vol. I, p. 404).

Writing to the Christians atCorinth, the Apostle Pauldescribed clearly the reward ofthe true saints: “Do you not knowthat the saints will judge theworld? And if the world will bejudged by you, are you unworthyto judge the smallest matters? Doyou not know that we shall judgeangels? How much more, thingsthat pertain to this life?” (1Corinthians 6:2–3). So we seethat the saints will judge “theworld”—not sit around up inheaven with nothing to do!

Jesus’ disciples “thought thekingdom of God would appearimmediately” (Luke 19:11). To cor-rect their misunderstanding, He gavethe parable of the nobleman gone toa far country. Jesus described in thisparable how some of His discipleswould receive rewards for usingtheir strengths or their money wise-

ly. When one came saying, “Master,Your mina has earned ten minas,”Jesus responded, “Well done, goodservant; because you were faithful ina very little, have authority over tencities!” A second servant came, say-ing his mina had gained five minas, and Jesus responded, “Likewise hesaid to him, ‘you also be over fivecities’” (vv. 16–19). Some moderntheologians try to “spiritualize away”these examples, of course. But againand again—from Genesis toRevelation—Scripture makes it clearthat God will set up a literal govern-ment on this earth under Jesus Christas King of kings!

Ruling directly under JesusChrist, over all twelve nations ofthe descendents of Israel, will beKing David—who will be resurrect-ed from the dead along with all theother saints of God! Describinghow Israel will return from its finalcaptivity after Christ returns,Jeremiah wrote: “‘For it shall cometo pass in that day,’ says the LORD

of hosts, ‘That I will break his yokefrom your neck, and will burstyour bonds; foreigners shall nomore enslave them. But they shallserve the LORD their God, andDavid their king, whom I will raiseup for them’” (Jeremiah 30:8–9).

Note also that our Creatorinspired Hosea to describe thissame basic truth about the organi-zation of Christ’s coming govern-ment: “Afterward the children ofIsrael shall return and seek theLORD their God and David theirking. They shall fear the LORD andHis goodness in the latter days”(Hosea 3:5).

An OrganizedGovernment

God also inspired Ezekiel toemphasize this same point when hedescribed the “latter days” in whichall the tribes of Israel will be regath-

ered into one nation: “David Myservant shall be king over them, and they shall all have one shep-herd; they shall also walk in Myjudgments and observe My statutes, and do them” (Ezekiel 37:24).

Will David directly rule alltwelve tribes—or nations—descended from Jacob? No. Therewill be an entire structure set up inan orderly manner, governed byleaders chosen byappointment ratherthan by votingand politicking. As Jesus told Hisfaithful apostlesnear the very endof His human life:“And I bestowupon you a king-dom, just as MyFather bestowedone upon Me, thatyou may eat anddrink at My tablein My kingdom, and sit on thronesjudging the twelve tribes of Israel”(Luke 22:29–30).

So the government inTomorrow’s World will be led byChrist as King of kings. UnderHim will be King David rulingover all Israel. Under David thetwelve apostles, resurrected, willeach rule over one of the tribes,or nations, of Israel.

The genuine “saints” of God—true Christians who have believedand obeyed what the Bible actuallysays—will be given the opportuni-ty to govern the individual cities ofthis world under this framework. And since the scriptural pattern isfirst to the Jew, then to the Gentile,we may be assured that the sametype of structure will be establishedover the Gentile nations on earth—a literal government directed byJesus Christ, the “Prince of Peace,”who will finally bring genuine

peace and joy to the entire world. Each one of us, if we are faithful asChristians, may have a part inbringing this kind of peace and joyto all the suffering nations of thisearth in Tomorrow’s World!

This is tremendous GoodNews! This is the true Gospeldescribed in your Bible. This is thereason for Jesus’ shed blood, sacri-ficed for our sins and bringing about

our reconciliation toGod. True Christians, reconciled to Godand given the pre-cious gift of the HolySpirit, are preparingto assist their Saviorin ruling the wholeworld. During Christ’smillennial rule, theearth will be rescuedfrom Satan’s rule, andthere will be a mag-nificent time of peace, prosperity and joy.God’s true Way of lifewill be restored to the

earth. Scripture explains that Godwill again “send Jesus Christ, whowas preached to you before, whomheaven must receive until the timesof restoration of all things, whichGod has spoken by the mouth of allHis holy prophets since the worldbegan” (Acts 3:20–21).

So we can understand that allHis holy prophets have proclaimedthis Good News of the “times ofrestoration of all things”—Christ’scoming Kingdom. Indeed, the OldTestament is filled with descrip-tions of the Messiah’s coming ruleover the entire world!

What Will the Saints Doin the Resurrection?

We have already seen that theresurrected saints will be “kingsand priests” in the comingKingdom of God on this earth

(Revelation 5:10). Also, we readthat Satan must be “bound” for a“thousand years” at the beginningof the Millennium, “that he shoulddeceive the nations no more untilthe thousand years were finished”(Revelation 20:2–3). Then, we arereminded that those in the firstresurrection “shall be priests ofGod and of Christ, and shall reignwith Him a thousand years” (v. 6).

Passage after passage inScripture reminds us that thepriests in ancient Israel were the

teachers. They were the oneswho taught the people God’s lawand His ways. Obviously,Christians who become “priests”of God in Tomorrow’s World willteach the people of the wholeearth the right way to live. OnceSatan is “bound,” the blindnessthat has come over this wholeworld will be lifted. People willunderstand the Truth and becomemuch more teachable. As a result, our job will be infinitely easierthan it is at present, when Satanis “the god of this age” (2Corinthians 4:4).

In many biblical passages,God tells us that in the “latterdays”—in Tomorrow’s World—Christ and His saints will teachthe whole world the law ofAlmighty God: “He will teach usHis ways, and we shall walk inHis paths. For out of Zion the lawshall go forth and the word of theLORD from Jerusalem” (Micah4:2). And: “Nation shall not liftup sword against nation, neithershall they learn war anymore” (v.3). Yes, young men and womenwill no longer be “taught” to fightin war.

This world, under Satan, spends vast amounts of itsresources on fighting and killing.Once the entire wealth of thenations is spent for peaceful pur-poses, it is not hard to imagine thegorgeous cities, national parks, and beautiful surroundings thatwill blossom forth all over theworld! Also, in sharp contrast tothe present day—when so manyhave absolutely no personal prop-erty or wealth—Scripture showsus that people will own their own

property in Tomorrow’s World:For “everyone shall sit under hisvine and under his fig tree, andno one shall make them afraid”(v. 4).

The prophet Isaiah tells usabout the “mountain” (orKingdom) of God being estab-lished in the “latter days,” andthat God “will teach us His ways, and we shall walk in His paths. For out of Zion shall go forth thelaw, and the word of the LORD

from Jerusalem” (Isaiah 2:1–3).What is this “law”? Is it just the“traffic law” and administrativematters? Of course not! Everyoneoriginally reading these versesunderstood clearly that thisreferred to God’s spiritual law—the Ten Commandments! Yes, anentire way of life based on the TenCommandments will be the“way” everyone will learn to liveduring Christ’s coming rule overthis earth!

Although many modern the-ologians offer clever argumentstrying to prove that God’s law is“done away,” that great spirituallaw will in fact be the very basis ofthe whole world’s society just a

few years from now! Incidentally,if you would like to learn moreabout how to understand andapply that magnificent law, pleasecontact the regional office nearestyou (listed on page 30 of this mag-azine) and write or call immediate-ly to request your free copy of ourinformative booklet, The TenCommandments.

What will life be like in aworld where everyone knowsand practices God’s law? Christ’scoming rule will be a time of

such peace that even the wildnature of animals shall beremoved (Isaiah 11:6–8). Thenthey “shall not hurt nor destroyin all My holy mountain, for theearth shall be full of the knowl-edge of the LORD as the waterscover the sea” (v. 9).

Scripture shows the guidancethat shattered humanity willreceive after people have been re-gathered from the terrible captivi-ty and affliction suffered duringthe Great Tribulation and Day ofthe Lord: “Yet your teachers willnot be moved into a corner any-more, but your eyes shall seeyour teachers. Your ears shall heara word behind you, saying, ‘Thisis the way walk in it,’ wheneveryou turn to the right hand orwhenever you turn to the left”(Isaiah 30:20–21). Guided byGod’s law, this will be a time ofpeace and happiness. “No lionshall be there, nor shall any rav-enous beast go up on it; it shallnot be found there. But theredeemed shall walk there, andthe ransomed of the LORD shallreturn, and come to Zion withsinging, with everlasting joy on

Although many modern theologians offer clever arguments trying toprove that God’s law is “done away,” that great spiritual law will in fact be the very basis of the whole world’s society just a few years from now!

Page 8: LCG street return - Tomorrow's World...fear having to pay a dowry at the marriage of a daugh-ter. And throughout the Muslim world, women are sys-tematically held down, degraded and

their heads. They shall obtain joyand gladness, and sorrow andsighing shall flee away” (Isaiah35:9–10).

The Saints WillBecome Teachers

At that time, the resurrected“saints” will teach the peoples ofthis earth God’s entire way of life, based upon the TenCommandments. This will pro-duce a world of peace and ever-lasting joy. Since Christ is the“first of the firstfruits,” we shouldlook to His example to see howresurrected Christians will appearand interact with the people ofthe earth during the Millennium.Jesus Christ now exists in ineffa-ble glory. In vision, John sawHim in that glory: “His head andhair were white like wool, aswhite as snow, and His eyes like aflame of fire; His feet were likefine brass, as if refined in a fur-nace, and His voice as the soundof many waters” (Revelation1:14–15).

The Apostle John also wrote:“Beloved, now we are children ofGod; and it has not yet beenrevealed what we shall be, but weknow that when He is revealed,we shall be like Him, for we shallsee Him as He is” (1 John 3:2).Yes, we will literally “look like”Jesus Christ! We will be “glori-fied” in the coming resurrectionas full sons of God—full brothersof Jesus Christ! For the Bibleclearly explains that Christ willbe, “the firstborn among manybrethren” (Romans 8:29).

But how did Christ Himselfteach people once He was glori-fied? After His resurrection, Jesusappeared to the apostles and toothers several times. Yet they didnot always recognize Him atfirst—He looked a little different

from how He had appeared dur-ing His human life. Yet the resur-rected Christ nearly alwaysappeared to others as a humanbeing, and interacting with peoplein that manner so they wouldunderstand what He was sayingand would not be afraid.Remember the account of MaryMagdalene, who at first did notknow she had seen the resurrect-ed Christ. A few minutes later, when He spoke to her in a normalvoice and revealed Himself, sheimmediately tried to embraceHim, but Jesus cautioned her:“Do not cling to Me…” (John20:14–17).

Later, Jesus appeared to Hisdisciples inside the buildingwhere they were meeting, andsaid, “peace be to you.” He thencommanded Thomas: “Reachyour finger here and look at myhands; and reach your hand here, and put it into my side. Do not beunbelieving, but believing” (vv.26–27).

So it is clear that all whotruly “overcome” and becomesaints of God in the resurrectionwill be able to teach the people ofearth in a personal way as Jesustaught His apostles. Certainly res-urrected Christians, serving JesusChrist in the Millennium, will

sometimes appear in great power, and at other times will speak topeople invisibly, as mentioned inIsaiah 30. Yet they will also oftenappear in a human form, as Jesusdid when He met with the apos-tles and later even had breakfastwith them by the sea of Galilee(John 21:12–15).

No doubt there will be occa-sions when mortal human beings, humbled or startled by encoun-ters with the resurrected saints, will marvel to their friends, “Itwas one of them!”

Will you be “one of them?”As each of us begins to under-stand God’s true plan, we mustmake that decision for ourselves. If God is calling you to be amongHis firstfruits, you have beengiven an amazing opportunity. For, as Jesus said: “And he whoovercomes, and keeps My worksuntil the end, to him I will givepower over the nations—‘He shallrule them with a rod of iron; theyshall be dashed to pieces like thepotter’s vessels’—as I also havereceived from My Father; and Iwill give him the morning star”(Revelation 2:26–27).

Christians today must truly“go all out” to show God that

Answer: When Jesus performed His very firstpublic miracle at Cana and “manifested Hisglory,” did He merely make grape juice (John2:11)? If the wedding at Cana was conductedaccording to Jewish custom, the guests werecertainly drinking fermented wine at the wed-ding feast. When the guests ran out of wine intheir time of rejoicing, Jesus helped them byturning water into what Scripture calls “wine.” IfJesus had made grape juice for the guests, theynever would have said to the bridegroom whatis reported in Scripture: “Every man at the begin-ning sets out the good wine, and when theguests have well drunk, then the inferior. Youhave kept the good wine until now!” (John2:10).

In the above verse, John used the Greekword oinos for “wine”—and it is important torecognize that oinos aallwwaayyss refers to a fer-mented beverage. The Bible uses 13 Hebrewand Greek words for “wine,” and we can findtheir meanings by noting the contexts inwhich they are used. The word “wine” is firstused in the Old Testament when Noah “drankof the wine and was drunk” (Genesis 9:21).The Hebrew word used here is yayin. Thatwine caused Noah to become intoxicated.Yayin aallwwaayyss means “fermented wine.” GodHimself gave “wine” to Abraham—the fatherof the faithful: “Then Melchizedek king ofSalem brought out bread and wine [yayin]; hewas the priest of God Most High” (Genesis14:18). Melchizedek was the one whobecame Jesus Christ, the God of the OldTestament; if you are not familiar withMelchizedek’s identity, please write to theregional office nearest you (listed on page 30of this magazine) to request, absolutely free, our reprint article, Who Was the God of theOld Testament?

The phrase “fruit of the vine” is only usedthree times in the Bible—Matthew 26:29;

Mark 14:25 and Luke 22:18—in reference tothe Passover service Jesus instituted on thenight before He died. Passover was held inthe spring, long before the annual grape har-vest, so any “fruit of the vine” consumed onthat evening would have had to be ferment-ed, as grape juice would long since havespoiled in the containers used for storage inJesus’ day. Some ludicrously claim that theitem consumed was “molasses”—another wayof preserving grapes without making wine. This does not make sense, if we rememberthat this was a meal, and Jesus and His disci-ples would not have been drinking molasseswith their meal.

The same Greek word oinos used in John2:3–10 is also used in Ephesians 5:18: “Anddo not be drunk with wine, in which is dissi-pation.” Grape juice does not cause “dissipa-tion.” Note also this description of theApostles on the day of Pentecost: “Othersmocking said, ‘They are full of new wine[oinos]’” (Acts 2:13): Furthermore: “It is goodneither to eat meat nor drink wine [oinos] nordo anything by which your brother stumblesor is offended or is made weak” (Romans14:21). Paul wrote to Timothy: “A bishop thenmust be… not given to wine [oinos], not vio-lent, not greedy for money, but gentle, notquarrelsome, not covetous” (1 Timothy3:2–3). Were we to substitute “grape juice”into these contexts, the verses would makeno sense. When Paul explained to Timothythe medicinal value of wine, he wrote: “Nolonger drink only water, but use a little winefor your stomach’s sake and your frequentinfirmities” (1 Timothy 5:23). Once again, theGreek word used is oinos—fermented wine, not grape juice. As you can see, while theBible condemns drunkenness, Scripture alsoteaches that it is acceptable to drink alcoholin moderation.

Question: Does the Bible teach that a Christian must not drink alcoholic beverages?

an any nation or empire long endure? For morethan 200 years, the United States has been a greatpower on the world scene. But in the first years

of the 21st century, we have seen the U.S. declining, andother powerful nations or alliances—such as China andthe European Union—exercising more and more political, economic and military power. Can the U.S. last muchlonger?

The world-ruling empires of the past no longer exist. The great Babylonian Empire, for example, conquered manynations, including the kingdom of Judah in the Middle East. The historian Herodotus wrote, “In addition to its enormoussize, Babylon surpasses in splendour any city of the knownworld” (The Histories, Book One, section 178).

What happened to that powerful empire? Babylon’sdepravity led to God’s judgment.

Are we headed for disaster, or willwe learn how to turn our nationsaround? Your Bible gives theanswer—for your nation, and for you!

C

The prophet Daniel, in the pages of yourBible, foretold the rise and fall of other vastempires. He predicted the rise and fall of theRoman Empire. What happened to theancient Roman Empire? That mighty empirelasted for more than 500 years, but finallycame to its end in 476AD. Historian EdwardGibbon summarized the causes of theempire’s fall. “After a diligent inquiry, I candiscern four principal causes for the ruin ofRome, which continued to operate in a peri-od of more than a thousand years. I. Theinjuries of time and nature. II. The hostileattacks of the barbarians and Christians. III.The use and abuse of materials. And IV. Thedomestic quarrels of the Romans” (TheDecline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Chapter71).

Modern empires, too, have come andgone. In the 20th century, the German “ThirdReich” attacked with military blitzkrieg andextended its rule over much of Europe andNorth Africa. Adolf Hitler’s ambitions includ-ed the conquest of the Soviet Union, but hefailed. Allied armies vanquished the ThirdReich. The Soviet Union, or the Union ofSoviet Socialist Republics, consisted of 15republics spanning 11,000 miles from east towest. This great superpower reveled in itscommunist ideology; it fought for the heartsof nations and peoples all over the world—and ultimately, it failed.

Now, that once-mighty power has shat-tered into 15 struggling nation-states, withtwelve tied together in the Commonwealth ofIndependent States. Who could have predict-ed the fall of such a great superpower? Youmight be surprised to learn that a small groupof biblically based Christians understood allalong that Eastern Europe would eventuallyescape the iron grip of the Soviet Union.

How did they know? Bible prophecy pre-dicted the rise of another great superpower, called the Beast in the book of Revelation.More than 50 years ago, Mr. Herbert W.Armstrong wrote that East Germany wouldbe rejoined to West Germany, and that Russia“will be forced to relinquish her control overHungary, Czechoslovakia and parts ofAustria” (Plain Truth, April 1952, p. 16).

Shortly after Russia’s 1956 invasion ofHungary, when many “experts” believed that

the “Iron Curtain” had fallen for-ever on the nations of EasternEurope, the Plain Truth magazinemade this amazing statement:“The way is being prepared for acolossal third force in world poli-tics—a European Federation ofNations more powerful thaneither Russia or the UnitedStates!… We have shown years inadvance what would happen toRussia’s ill-fated Empire inEastern Europe” (Plain Truth,December 1956, p. 3).

Will today’sWestern nations fol-low the same patternof decline and fall asthe nations that havegone before them? Will Great Britain,Canada, Australiaand New Zealanddecline and fall? Willthe United Statescontinue to experi-ence more Katrina-like hurri-canes, earthquakes, and other nat-ural disasters? Will we continueto experience the attacks of ter-rorism? History and the Biblehave demonstrated over and over, that when nations reject the Godof creation, they will be judged. Will the Western world continueits rejection of biblical truth? Thephilosopher Georg Hegelobserved: “What experience andhistory teach is this—that peopleand governments never havelearned anything from history, oracted on principles deduced fromit” (The Philosophy of History).

The history of the world isthe story of nations and empiresthat prospered and later turned todust. Will we learn the lessons ofhistory? Some empires declinedslowly before their demise. Otherswere destroyed or captured sud-denly. The great empires of thepast are now little more than arti-

facts in museums, or broken-down monuments where theyonce thrived. Britain once com-manded the world’s largestempire. By 1921, it covered about15 million square miles—one-third of the world’s total landarea—and held about one-quarterof the world’s population. It wassaid that “the sun never set on theBritish Empire.” After a finalburst of expansion right afterWorld War II, a process of “decol-onization” began, and by 1960

the Britishhad given upthe lands thattoday com-prise India,Pakistan,Burma, SriLanka, Iraq,Ghana,Nigeria,Somalia andmuch of sub-

Saharan Africa, as well as thePalestinian Mandate and parts ofEgypt and Sudan. Over the last 40years, Britain has given up mostof its overseas possessions, mostrecently returning Hong Kong toChinese sovereignty in 1997. Thesun set on the British Empire longago.

Will the superpower UnitedStates face a similar decline? Everynation—every empire—of the pasthas fallen, just like Greece andRome. You can know what nationsor empires will rise and fall in the21st century. Bible prophecyreveals the future of the westernnations, if you know the key tofinding the modern descendantsof ancient biblical nations.

Does this surprise you?Remember, there is a God inheaven who is working out agreat plan here on earth. He isgiving rebellious human beingsthousands of years to experiment

with their own man-made religion, science, government, business, education, and socialinstitutions. God allows people to go their own carnal way of selfishness, war, and violence, but He has a plan—and as we see from history and Scripture, He does intervene in world events to help humanity learnlasting lessons of life and death.

Lessons Learned?

Have we learned the lessons ofhistory? The renowned philoso-pher George Santayana, in hisfamous treatise Reason in CommonSense, wrote: “Those who cannotremember the past are condemnedto repeat it.” Will we in theWestern world learn the lessons ofhistory? Or will we follow the pat-tern of all great kingdoms andempires that have come and gonebefore us—that rose to the heightsof power and dominance, and thenfell to decadence and oblivion?

Belshazzar, the last king ofBabylon, was one great ruler whoshould have learned the lessons ofhistory. Yet he insisted on his owngodless way of life, and led othersinto debauchery. His empire paidthe penalty. That profound lessonis recorded in the pages of histo-ry—and in the pages of yourBible. The prophet Daniel was inthe city of Babylon the night thePersian army conquered it.Through Daniel, God let kingBelshazzar know what was goingto happen to him and his empire. This amazing sequence of eventsis recorded in chapter 5 of thebook of Daniel, in the famousstory of the “handwriting on thewall.” King Belshazzar prepared afeast—a great party—for thou-sands of his nobles. They drankwine out of golden vessels plun-dered from God’s Temple in

Jerusalem. “In the same hour thefingers of a man’s hand appearedand wrote opposite the lampstandon the plaster of the wall of theking’s palace; and the king sawthe part of the hand that wrote. Then the king’s countenancechanged, and his thoughts trou-bled him, so that the joints of hiships were loosened and his kneesknocked against each other”(Daniel 5:5–6).

The king called upon Danielto interpret this saying. What hadthe mysterious hand written?“And this is the inscription thatwas written:MENE, MENE,TEKEL,UPHARSIN.This is theinterpretationof each word.MENE: Godhas numberedyour kingdom, and finished it;TEKEL: You have been weighedin the balances, and found want-ing; PERES: Your kingdom hasbeen divided, and given to theMedes and Persians” (Daniel5:25–28). Then: “That very nightBelshazzar, king of the Chaldeans, was slain. And Darius the Medereceived the kingdom, beingabout sixty-two years old” (vv.30–31).

Today, the handwriting is onthe wall for the United States andGreat Britain. The warning signsare all around us, as our nationsbecome more decadent andimmoral. Yet there is still time forus to repent, nationally and indi-vidually. Will we listen to God’swarnings?

In the past few years, theUnited States has experiencedshocking disasters. On September11, 2001, terrorists flew hijackedairliners into New York’s World

Trade Center and into thePentagon in Washington, DC.Thousands were killed in theattacks. In September 2005,Hurricane Katrina devastated thesouthern coast of the UnitedStates. The city of New Orleanswas flooded. Katrina has beencalled “the worst natural disasterin U.S. history.”

These disasters demonstratedhow vulnerable and how unpre-pared we are. Can any nationafford to sustain hundreds of bil-lions of dollars in financial loss? What lessons should we learn

from thesecatastro-phes? Arethey simplyan expectedpart of thecycle of his-tory and

nature? Oris God pow-erfully inter-vening towake us upfrom ourmoral andspiritualdecline? Ifwe are honest with ourselves, wemust admit that our nations havestrayed far from the God of theBible and His Son Jesus Christ! Ifwe in the Western world continueto ignore, despise, and reject theTen Commandments, and theword of God, the Bible, we willface more disasters—until we getit through our thick, carnal, skulls that we need to seek Godwith our whole heart! Theprophet Isaiah gives us thisexhortation, encouragement andpromise. “Seek the LORD while Hemay be found, call upon Him

while He is near. Let the wickedforsake his way, and the unright-eous man his thoughts; let himreturn to the LORD, and He willhave mercy on him; and to ourGod, for He will abundantly par-don” (Isaiah 55:6–7).

We must take spiritual actionnow! Of course, some hardheadswill remain skeptical. But thosewho seek God through His wordcan have understanding andpeace of mind.

An Ancient Lesson

We have seen that greatempires do not last forever. Theyrise, decline and fall. Will theWestern nations learn the lessonsof history? King Belshazzarignored the lessons he shouldhave learned from his ancestor,King Nebuchadnezzar, who had

ruled over theBabylonianempire. DanielremindedBelshazzar of thelessons heshould havelearned fromthis previousking. “O king, the Most HighGod gave

Nebuchadnezzar your father[ancestor] a kingdom andmajesty, glory and honor. Andbecause of the majesty that Hegave him, all peoples, nations, and languages trembled andfeared before him. Whomever hewished, he executed; whomeverhe wished, he kept alive;whomever he wished, he set up;and whomever he wished, he putdown. But when his heart waslifted up, and his spirit washardened in pride, he wasdeposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him.

Page 13: LCG street return - Tomorrow's World...fear having to pay a dowry at the marriage of a daugh-ter. And throughout the Muslim world, women are sys-tematically held down, degraded and

JJaannuuaarryy––FFeebbrruuaarryy 22000077 1133

Then he was driven from the sonsof men, his heart was made likethe beasts, and his dwelling waswith the wild donkeys. They fedhim with grass like oxen, and hisbody was wet with the dew ofheaven, till he knew that the MostHigh God rules in the kingdom ofmen, and appoints over itwhomever He chooses” (Daniel5:18–21).

Nebuchadnezzar learned aprofound lesson. He tried to rulewithout acknowledging God, andhe suffered terribly for it! Mustwe also learn lessons the hardway, or will we pay attention toGod, and to His word, the Bible?

The prophet Daniel hadalready predicted that Babylonwould fall and be replaced by theMedo-Persian empire. Then KingNebuchadnezzar had a dreamwhich none of his astrologerscould reveal to him. But theprophet Daniel not only told theking what his dream was, but healso gave the interpretation: “You,O king, were watching; andbehold, a great image! This greatimage, whose splendor was excel-lent, stood before you; and itsform was awesome. This image’shead was of fine gold, its chestand arms of silver, its belly andthighs of bronze, its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly ofclay” (Daniel 2:31–33).

The prophet Daniel told theking the dream’s meaning. “You,O king, are a king of kings. Forthe God of heaven has given youa kingdom, power, strength, andglory; and wherever the childrenof men dwell, or the beasts of thefield and the birds of the heaven,He has given them into yourhand, and has made you rulerover them all; you are this head ofgold” (vv. 37–38).

Here, God was revealing thepower and authority that He, the

Creator of the universe, was giv-ing the “head of gold”—Nebuchadnezzar and his king-dom. The dream, however, fore-told the end of Nebuchadnezzar’skingdom, and the establishmentof others after his: “But after youshall arise another kingdom infe-rior to yours; then another, athird kingdom of bronze, whichshall rule over all the earth. Andthe fourth kingdom shall be asstrong as iron, inasmuch as ironbreaks in pieces and shatterseverything; and like iron thatcrushes, that kingdom will breakin pieces and crush all the others”(vv. 39–40).

Which empires did this dreamdescribe? Reputable Bible scholarstoday agree on their identity andfulfillment. The head of gold rep-resented the Babylonian Empirefrom 625BC to 539BC. This empirewas replaced by the Medo-PersianEmpire from 558BC to 330BC, rep-resented by the chest and arms ofsilver. The belly and thighs ofbronze signify the Greco-Macedonian Empire of Alexanderthe Great from 333BC to 31BC.The two legs of iron indicate theRoman Empire from 31BC to476AD. Finally, the ten toes, ontwo feet of iron, mixed withceramic clay, represent a futurerevival of the Roman Empire.

The dream revealed one lastimportant detail. The four world-ly kingdoms represented inNebuchadnezzar’s dream will allcome to an end. They will bereplaced by what we can call afifth Kingdom, the comingKingdom of God.

“You watched while a stonewas cut out without hands, whichstruck the image on its feet ofiron and clay, and broke them inpieces. Then the iron, the clay, thebronze, the silver, and the goldwere crushed together, and

became like chaff from the sum-mer threshing floors; the windcarried them away so that notrace of them was found. And thestone that struck the imagebecame a great mountain andfilled the whole earth” (vv.34–35).

What is the stone that struckthe image? Daniel described itsmeaning: “And in the days ofthese kings [symbolized by theten toes] the God of heaven willset up a kingdom which shallnever be destroyed; and the king-dom shall not be left to otherpeople; it shall break in piecesand consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever” (v. 44).

Yes, the Kingdom of God willcome to this earth soon! OnlyGod can bring us lasting peace.

Will We Repent?

Throughout the history of theworld, it has been extremely rareto find any society that wouldturn from its evil ways. Ninevah, the capital city of ancient Assyria, along the Tigris River, was one ofthese few—and actually delayedGod’s judgment. The prophetJonah came to the citizens ofNinevah with God’s warning:“And Jonah began to enter thecity on the first day’s walk. Thenhe cried out and said, ‘Yet fortydays, and Nineveh shall be over-thrown!’” (Jonah 3:4). How didthe Ninevites respond? Did theyignore God’s prophet Jonah? No!“So the people of Ninevehbelieved God, proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from thegreatest to the least of them. Thenword came to the king ofNineveh; and he arose from histhrone and laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth

t h e r e v i v a l o f aEuropean power with roots going back to the ancientRoman Empire (Daniel 2:28, 40–45). Scripture calls thisrevived power a “beast” that will be stamped with a Romanlabel, and it will consist of ten kings [or national leaders]who will surrender their sovereignty to a strong and craftyindividual (Daniel 11:3–39; Revelation 17:12–13). The Biblealso indicates that this end-time revival of the Roman Empirewill combine the power of a dominant church with the polit-ical machinery of the state—the “woman” (symbol of a reli-gious leader) will ride the beast (symbol of the state—seeDaniel 7:8, 20–21; Revelation 17:1–6). These long-ponderedprophecies are coming alive today!

Reviving the Past

Bernd Neumann, Germany’s federal Commissionerfor Culture and the Media, spoke last August at theopening of a Berlin exhibit on “The Holy RomanEmpire of the German Nation.” The exhibit, whichattracted considerable public interest at the state-con-trolled Historical Museum in Berlin, looked at the pastof Old Europe to find structures and developmentalprocesses that are of great significance for the federalconstruction of Europe. The Holy Roman Empire of theGerman nation held sway over central Europeannations for nearly a thousand years—from 962 to1806AD. In his remarks, Neumann stressed to museumpatrons the vital role a revived Holy Roman Empirecould play as a model for the future of Europe. Accordingto Neumann, the German Reich of the Middle Ages canfrom today’s perspective serve “as a valid model for thefunctioning order of a superstate” (press release,German Federal Information Office, August 27, 2006).

Neumann is not the first voice to urge the revival

of this Imperial idea. Otto von Hapsburg, a descendentof the last emperor to sit on the Austro-Hungarianthrone, has also mentioned that there could yet be arole for the Imperial crown of the Holy Roman Empirein forging a meaningful union among the diversecountries of Europe. Similarly, the Pan-Europa Unionhas also emphasized that “the eternal function of theReich must be renewed in the Europe of tomorrow inthe interest of the West” (Monthly Bulletin of the Pan-Europa Union, January 1977).

Appeal to Religion

During the days of the Holy Roman Empire, powerwas shared between the German emperors and thepopes in Rome. The popes exercised power in the spir-itual realm, while the emperors exercised their powerin the political realm. Roman Catholic popes crownedthe emperors, and gave spiritual validation to theoffice of the monarch. This, too, appears to be in theoffing for the future of Europe. German ChancellorAndrea Merkel recently extended an invitation to PopeBenedict XVI, formerly Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger ofGermany, to speak in Berlin in 2007, on the occasionof the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, whichestablished the European Economic Community, theforerunner of today’s European Union. Reports suggestthat the pope plans to speak on the “spiritual founda-tions” of Europe—which in Benedict’s frameworkindicates the role the Roman Catholic Church hasplayed—and could play again—in uniting the“Christian” nations of Europe during the Middle Ages.Several popes before Benedict also stressed the needfor Europe to discover its spiritual roots. Other leadingclerical and political figures have also stated that it willtake “something more” than economic treaties andtrade regulations to tie the nations of Europe together.

Future Concerns

The election of Joseph Ratzinger, the first Germanpope in a thousand years, puts the Roman papacy inan unusual position. Ratzinger, born in Germanybetween the two World Wars, was affected deeply byhis experiences in the Hitler Youth, and by service as aconscript in the German army during World War II.

Benedict’s visit toBerlin in 2007 will coincidewith Germany holding thesix-month rotating presi-dency of the EU, and alsowith that nation’s presid-ing over the G-8 organi-zation of leading indus-trialized nations.Benedict’s presence at thefiftieth anniversary of the Treaty ofRome will no doubt lend legitimacy to the idea ofcooperation between Church and state in the futureevolution of a united Europe, even though someEuropeans—notably the French, who are openly com-mitted to secularism and the separation of religion andpolitics—will not welcome such a development.

Neumann’s remarks about a German Reich, echo-ing statements by other German leaders, have soberingimplications for nations in Eastern Europe. Neumannreminded his audience that the Holy Roman Empire ofthe German Nation was “part of the past of manyEuropean states” including Poland and the CzechRepublic, and that “Germany and Central Europe arehistorically and culturally indissolubly linked togeth-er” (press release, German Federal Information Office,August 27, 2006). Such assertion of German hegemo-ny over other parts of Europe generates fear among thenewly independent states to Germany’s south and east.German student organizations also continue to pro-mote German territorial claims to parts of Austria,Poland, Denmark, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy andRussia where German-speakers live. In fact, one grouphas stated, “The German Reich in its borders of 31st

December 1937 continues to be recognized inGerman law” and, further, “By Germany weunderstand the German inhabited area in CentralEurope from which Germans have been illegally expelled… Germany exists inde-pendently of State borders.” (2005 Handbook,Deutsche Burschenschaft). This is not merenationalism; these same ideas were expound-e d b y G e r m a n y ’ s N a z i p a r t y when it rationalized its desire to annex territory that belonged to other countries, and in the process ignited the fires of World War II. any people today findthemselves in “dead-end” jobs, or in workthey feel is purposeless

and frustrating. Do you feel yourwork is taking you down a one-waystreet? Is it supposed to be that way?

A recent poll conducted byCareerVision.org suggested thatonly about half of American work-ers are satisfied with their jobs.British workers expressed similarlevels of discontent, according to areport by the European Foundationfor the Improvement of Living andWorking Conditions. Authors JamesPatterson and Peter Kim report thatsurveys show as many as 90 percentof workers do not like their work(The Day America Told the Truth, p.155). While some are satisfied and

engaged in their work, many othersare unhappy. Why?

For most people, throughoutmost of history, the experience ofwork has not been very pleasurableor even comfortable. Even today, formost of earth’s population, work isnot a luxury, but rather a “necessaryevil” in their struggle to survive! Asone academic writer explains: “Froma historical perspective, the culturalnorm placing a positive moral valueon doing a good job because workhas intrinsic value for its own sakewas a relatively recent develop-ment… Work, for much of theancient history of the human race, has been hard and degrading… theHebrew belief system viewed work asa ‘curse devised by God explicitly topunish the disobedience and ingrati-

tude of Adam and Eve’…Numerous scriptures from theOld Testament in fact supportedwork, not from the stance thatthere was any joy in it, but fromthe premise that it was necessaryto prevent poverty and destitu-tion” (Historical Context of theWork Ethic, Roger Hill, Ph.D.).

Did something happen thatchanged society’s view of work? Was work once consideredpositive and rewarding, wherenow it is mostly tolerated as anecessary burden at best? Thesurprising answer is: Yes!

The book of Genesis tells usthat God worked to create ourworld—He separated the waterfrom the dry land and createdthe fish, birds, and land ani-mals. Six times, Genesis reportsGod saying that He looked atthe work of His hands and sawit was good! At the end of theweek, after His work was done,“God saw everything that Hehad made, and indeed it wasvery good” (Genesis 1:31).

God was not distressed byHis work; He enjoyed it! Heworked for six days, and thenrested to enjoy His labor onthe seventh day, thus institut-ing the weekly Sabbath(Genesis 2:1–3).

But God did not want toenjoy the creation processalone; He wanted to share Hisworld and its development withothers. One key reason He cre-ated human beings was to sharein the joy of His work. We read:“The LORD God planted a gar-den eastward in Eden, and thereHe put the man whom He hadformed… Then the LORD Godtook the man and put him inthe garden of Eden to tend andkeep it” (Genesis 2:8, 15).

God wanted Adam and Eveand their descendants to have

the pleasing and exciting chal-lenge of tending the Garden ofEden, and ultimately of beautify-ing the entire earth! But theysinned. They rejected God’s truth,His sovereignty over them and Hisway of life. What was the result?

“Then to Adam [God] said,‘Because you have heeded the voiceof your wife, and have eaten fromthe tree of which I commandedyou, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’:‘Cursed is the ground for your sake;In toil you shall eat of it all thedays of your life. Both thorns andthistles it shall bring forth for you,and you shall eat the herb of thefield. In the sweat of your face youshall eat bread” (Genesis 3:17–19).

When Noah was born, hisvery name was a reminder thatmankind toiled in unpleasantwork because of Adam and Eve’ssin. Upon his birth, his parentsremarked, “This one will comfortus concerning our work and thetoil of our hands, because of theground which the LORD hascursed” (Genesis 5:29). InHebrew, the name “Noah” means“rest”—indicating the respite fromtoil his parents were expecting.

Yes, sin brought terrible conse-quences to our world! Adam andEve gave up an ideal job—a won-derful environment with perfectworking conditions and great bene-fits! By sinning, they chose to rebelagainst God’s commands and weredriven out of this most hospitableand supportive environment.Billions of human beings havestruggled to subsist ever since.

The Industrial Revolution wassupposed to bring a better lifestyle, through progress leading to moreefficient labor-saving machines. Butindustrial progress did not reallysolve the problems of many work-ing people. In fact, history showsthat many who toiled in the millsand factories suffered under

deplorable conditions. Here is howone writer in 1833 described millworkers in England, and the des-perate conditions they endured:“Their complexion is sallow andpallid—with a peculiar flatness offeature, caused by the want of aproper quantity of adipose [fat]substance to cushion out thecheeks… Great numbers of girlsand women walking lamely or awk-wardly… A spiritless and dejectedair, a sprawling and wide action ofthe legs, and an appearance, takenas a whole, giving the world but ‘lit-tle assurance of a man,’ or if so,‘most sadly cheated of his fair pro-portions...’” (“The PhysicalDeterioration of the TextileWorkers,” The ManufacturingPopulation of England, P. Gaskell,pp. 161–162, 202–203).

Children suffered especially inthe new mechanized economy, many essentially enslaved. Theauthor continues: “Factory labouris a species of work in somerespects singularly unfitted forchildren. Cooped up in a heatedatmosphere, debarred the neces-sary exercise, remaining in oneposition for a series of hours, oneset or system of muscles alonecalled into activity, it cannot bewondered at—that its effects areinjurious to the physical growth ofa child” (ibid.).

Though working conditionshave greatly improved in the lastcentury and a half, modern slav-ery in industry still exists today(see “Slavery Makes aComeback,” Tomorrow’s World,September-October 2006, pp.26–27). In many countries, work-ers still suffer under harsh condi-tions and difficult environments.

A Real Rest Is Coming

God gave us the seventh-daySabbath—a weekly rest from our

labors—to remind us that after6,000 years of human beings livingtheir own selfish way, a thousand-year “rest” will soon come, duringJesus Christ’s millennial reign onthe earth. The New Testament tellsus of a rest coming for all theearth: “Therefore, since a promiseremains of entering His rest, let usfear lest any of you seem to havecome short of it… For if Joshuahad given them rest, then Hewould not afterward have spokenof another day… For he who hasentered His rest has himself alsoceased from his works as God didfrom His” (Hebrews 4:1, 8, 10).

What will that millennial restbe like? Bible prophecy shows itwill be a time when the earth isreturned to a state like the Gardenof Eden (Isaiah 51:1–3). Scriptureshows us a coming time when“everyone shall sit under his vineand under his fig tree, and no oneshall make them afraid” (Micah4:4). In fact, the ground will be sofruitful—and the environment soconducive to supporting humanlife—that “the plowman shallovertake the reaper, and the tread-er of grapes him who sows seed”(Amos 9:13). We read, “Thewilderness and the wasteland shallbe glad for them, and the desertshall rejoice and blossom as therose” (Isaiah 35:1).

Not only will the curse ofAdam and Eve be lifted, but theroot cause of God’s curse will beremoved—mankind’s rebellion andrejection of God’s ways and laws.

Statutes in the Workplace

The prophet Ezekieldescribed life under God’s govern-ment: “I will give you a new heartand put a new spirit within you…I will put My Spirit within youand cause you to walk in My

statutes, and you will keep Myjudgments and do them” (Ezekiel36:26–27).

Workplace statutes can savelives and encourage a safe andhealthy work environment. In theUnited States, the OccupationalSafety and Health Administration, founded in 1971, has adminis-tered regulations estimated tohave cut workplace fatalities bymore than 60 percent, and occu-pational injury and illness ratesby 40 percent (U.S. Departmentof Labor OSHA website, “OSHAFacts,” December 2004).

However, long before OSHAexisted, God established regulationsto provide for a safe and healthyenvironment. For example: “Andif a man opens a pit, or if a mandigs a pit and does not cover it, andan ox or a donkey falls in it, theowner of the pit shall make itgood” (Exodus 21:33–34).Another statute prescribes a soundconstruction practice, the need tobuild railings on roofs to preventaccidents: “When you build a newhouse, then you shall make aparapet for your roof, that youmay not bring guilt of bloodshedon your household if anyone fallsfrom it” (Deuteronomy 22:8).

In the soon-comingMillennium, under the reign ofJesus Christ, the earth will experi-ence a vibrant, healthy economy.Ample goods and efficient servic-es will be supplied by peoplebusily engaged in their work—and enjoying it, too! As peoplebegin to learn God’s view of work, and put His principles of love intopractice every day through theindwelling power of His Spirit, they will begin to experience intheir work a peace and fulfillmentbeyond description!

That future time will be excit-ing and wonderful. But must wewait until Christ’s return to start

enjoying a happier work environ-ment? Would you like to experi-ence a stronger sense of purposeand excitement in your work andyour life today? You can!Consider these basic points tomake your work more blessed, nomatter what you do:

Look to God to Provide for You

Adam and Eve made the mis-take of disobeying God, and seek-ing fulfillment through their ownefforts. The vital first step to find-ing fulfillment in your work is tolearn from the mistake they made, and to accept God as your Lord—your Boss—the true ruler of yourlife, the One who provides allyour needs. If you really want tobe blessed and happy in yourwork, begin to look to Him.

Christ taught us: “Now if Godso clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow isthrown into the oven, will He notmuch more clothe you, O you oflittle faith?... But seek first thekingdom of God and His righteous-ness, and all these things shall beadded to you” (Matthew6:30–33).

If you are putting God first—doing His will and obeying Hiscommands—He will guide andmanage your work and your life.As He told the Israelites: “Youshall remember the LORD yourGod, for it is He who gives youpower to get wealth… if you byany means forget the LORD yourGod, and follow other gods, andserve them and worship them, Itestify against you this day thatyou shall surely perish”(Deuteronomy 8:18–19).

God commands us to bethankful (Colossians 3:15).Especially in uncertain economictimes, just having food on the

table—and a job to provide forit—is something to be thankfulfor. The Apostle Paul exhorts us:“Be anxious for nothing, but ineverything by prayer and suppli-cation, with thanksgiving, letyour requests be made known toGod” (Philippians 4:6). The firststep to achieving more fulfillmentin your work is simply toacknowledge the God who pro-vides it.

Become a BetterEmployee or Employer

How can you have a betterwork experience? One way is bybecoming a better worker! Bysome estimates, American work-ers admit to goofing off up to 20percent of the time on the job.Almost half admit to calling insick when they are well, one insix regularly drink or use drugson the job, and only one in foursay they give their best effort(Patterson, p. 155)! What aboutyou? Are you dedicated to puttingin an honest day’s work?

Do you find it difficult to getalong with others—your co-work-ers, your employees, or yourboss? What if you have an espe-cially difficult boss? God shows ushow to handle such situations:“Servants, be submissive to yourmasters with all fear, not only tothe good and gentle, but also tothe harsh. For this is commend-able, if because of consciencetoward God one endures grief, suffering wrongfully… when youdo good and suffer for it, if youtake it patiently, this is commend-able before God” (1 Peter2:18–20).

Certainly there comes a timewhen you should stop enduringthe abuse of a belligerent boss, and should move on to a new job.But before you rush to leave an

Page 19: LCG street return - Tomorrow's World...fear having to pay a dowry at the marriage of a daugh-ter. And throughout the Muslim world, women are sys-tematically held down, degraded and

unpleasant workplace, make sureyou have done all you can tomake your present workplace bet-ter. Make an effort to find ways tohelp your boss achieve his or hergoals. Seek cooperation ratherthan confrontation. Remember, “asoft answer turns away wrath, buta harsh word stirs up anger”(Proverbs 15:1). Learningconstructive ways to workthrough conflict lessens yourstress level, improves yourfeeling of well-being andresults in a better work expe-rience overall.

If you supervise otherpeople, do you have troublegetting along with them?Take time to learn betterways to encourage and moti-vate your employees—eventhe “difficult” ones! Scripturetells managers to give work-ers what is “just and fair”(Colossians 4:1), and to “giveup threatening” (Ephesians6:9). Fairness, patience, and anhonest effort to understand youremployees’ goals and needs goes along way in building workplacemorale. God is watching howmanagers treat others, knowingthat He is their “Manager” inheaven (v. 9).

Approach Work withPassion and Zeal

What is your passion?Baseball promoter Mike Veeckbelieves passion in the workplaceis crucial for being happy andcontent: “Most of us allow life tobeat us up and then down. Wefall into routines, especially atwork, and over time we sleepwalkthrough much of our lives, espe-cially at work. It’s time to shakeourselves out of this mediocreexistence…” (Fun Is Good: How toCreate Joy and Passion in Your

Workplace and Career, p. 6).Passion and zeal should not beconfused with being a workaholic. The goal is not to overdo—it is todo something you love and feel isimportant. Participating in some-thing you care deeply about willbring excitement to your work, and will unleash your creativity.

Veeck explains what he islooking for when he interviewspotential employees: “When Iconduct interviews, I look forpassion, and I can tell within 2minutes if a person has it…Someone with the most impres-sive background won’t fit if he orshe doesn’t have passion. At thesame time, someone with a mod-est resume might be a perfect fit”(ibid., p. 5).

It is rare to find work thatexactly fits your passion in life. But finding something you canbecome excited about willgreatly increase your enjoymentof work. This principle appliesbeyond the workplace. Thoughsome today are quick todemean a woman’s role ofhomemaker as described inScripture (Titus 2:5), the truthis that managing a householdoffers a woman opportunities

for exploring her own passionsin decorating and design, cook-ing, sewing, health and nutri-tion, budgeting, child develop-ment, and many other areas.Author Alexandra Stoddardsays: “The test of a true voca-tion, someone once said, is thelove of the drudgery it

involves… When we doour work with commit-ment and dedication, wetake pride in everythingwe do, when we areeager and passionateabout getting it doneright, every single thingwe do is important…”(Gracious Living in aNew World, p. 126).

King Solomon ofancient Israel gave thissage advice long ago:“Whatever you do, dowell, for in death, whereyou are going, there is noworking or planning, or

knowing, or understanding”(Ecclesiastes 9:10, Living Bible).Doing our work—whatever ourwork—with passion and zeal, increases our motivation, drive, and our enjoyment of the task.

If You Want To EnjoyYour Work—Enjoy Your Work!

Bible prophecy describesJesus Christ’s millennial reign as atime when the whole world willexperience joy and gladness(Isaiah 35:1–2, 10). God is a joy-ful God, and His Spirit is likenedto the “oil of joy” (Isaiah 61:3).Many people today trudgethrough their work with a heavyheart, burdened down by stressesand pressures. But Jesus promisedrelief and “rest” for those whocome to Him (Matthew 11:28–30).Are you experiencing that

“rest”—allowing Jesus Christ tohelp carry your load, and to liftyou up when you are down?

Most of us know someonewho has a contagiously sunnypersonality, and we have seenhow a cheerful word or sponta-neous laughter can break the iceof tension or stress at just theright moment. Long ago, Solomonwas inspired to write: “A merryheart makes a cheerful counte-nance, but by sorrow of the heartthe spirit is broken” (Proverbs15:13).

To have true success inwork—and in life—people needto enjoy what they are doing.Consider: “I want things to bepeaceful and happy because that’sthe environment that makes memost creative… People have adriving need to be happy, and it’sa tough act to pull off if it’s notgenuine” (Veeck, p. 21).

Can you smile easily andbring a bit of lightness to an oth-erwise heavy situation? Can youlaugh at yourself, and not takeyourself too seriously? By becom-ing someone who not only workswith zeal and passion, but withjoy, you can have a far betterwork experience, and help othersbe more productive as well.

Understand for WhomYou Really Work

To a true Christian, even themost difficult and dead-end jobcan be filled with purpose and sig-nificance—if we remember forwhom we are really working!Paul explained: “Servants, be obe-dient to those who are your mas-ters according to the flesh, withfear and trembling, in sincerity ofheart, as to Christ; not with eye-service, as men-pleasers, but asservants of Christ, doing the willof God from the heart”

(Ephesians 6:5–6). Your work cantake on greater significance whenyou realize that you are not mere-ly working for human beings, butto please God!

Our lives today are a trainingground for something muchgreater. Adam and Eve were giventhe opportunity to work forGod—the same opportunity true

Christians are given today! God islooking for people He can use inthe soon-coming Millennium whoare obedient to Him, who workhard, who love others and have apassion and enjoyment of life!

Do you consider your work tobe menial, endless, or worthless?Do you feel you have no realopportunities? God uses thesmallest experiences to teach trueChristians lessons they will use inbig ways in the future. Christexplained this in the parable ofthe talents: “For the kingdom ofheaven is like a man traveling to afar country, who called his ownservants and delivered his goods

to them… After a long time thelord of those servants came andsettled accounts with them. So hewho had received five talentscame and brought five other tal-ents, saying, ‘Lord, you deliveredto me five talents; look, I havegained five more talents besidesthem.’ His lord said to him, ‘Welldone, good and faithful servant;you were faithful over a few things,I will make you ruler over manythings. Enter into the joy of yourlord’” (Matthew 25:14; 19–21).

God is training today’sChristians to rule with Him—toassist Him in running a globalsociety. The prerequisite for work-ing with Christ in His Kingdom isnot that we achieve wealth andstatus in this life; rather, we mustlearn character and obedience toGod, love for our fellow humanbeings, and total faith in His Son,in whatever opportunities Godnow gives us.

So, make the most of everywork opportunity you have—withzeal, passion, joy and love. Do notsquander an opportunity to letyour work now prepare you towork for God in His Kingdom(Matthew 25:24–28)!

Is your work a curse? It doesnot need to be! With God’s help,we can all experience the joys ofworking—God’s way—now, andprepare for profound, fulfilling, and meaningful work in God’sKingdom.

Your booklet, The Real God: Proofs andPromises, is outstanding! You had to be guided bythe Holy Spirit in order to write that, so many peo-ple would understand the true meaning of whyGod created man. Anyone reading the bookletand coming away from it without believing thatGod exists is really deceived or a complete fool. Somany things that you pointed out make it incon-ceivable not to believe in a true living God. Thankyou sincerely for the truths that you offer for a sim-ple person like myself to understand and believe.

From your Bible Study Course, booklets andmagazines I have learned many things I neverknew before. For example, the days God madeholy. I should be celebrating the way God intend-ed me to do. I never knew the great importanceof those days or the great importance of the TenCommandments. But, thanks to the works ofChrist through all of you at Tomorrow’s World,my Bible has really come to life before my eyes, which is allowing my mind to open up to thingsI never understood before. Please pray for me as

I continue on my way to learning more abouthow I should be living my life.

I have read the Bible. I have never been so dis-gusted and offended in my entire life. How canyou people perpetuate this ancient Palestinian psy-chotic madness? It is no wonder that the world isfalling apart with this kind of evil being constantlychurned out by deceptive religionists such as your-selves. You should all be ashamed of yourselves.

I have been a recipient of your wonderfulbooklets and magazines for a few years now. Ihave started to reread some of them, particular-ly about God’s laws. I wish to become an obe-dient servant to our Lord Jesus and the paththat I am taking is not fulfilling that wish. Yourwritings make sense to me and draw me a lotcloser to our Lord. I have actually started to feelHis presence in my life because of the under-standing I have gained from your writings andthe referencing that I have undertaken.

hy is the quest for world peace so difficult and frustrat-ing? Why have the efforts of diplomats, popes, politicians,

armies and generations of demonstrators failed to achievelasting peace? Why has the United Nations been unable to promote realunity among the nations and peoples of the world? What is missing fromhuman attempts to end strife, violence and wars that continue to eruptaround the globe? Is there a way that will lead to real peace on earth?

Surprising as it may seem to modern skeptics and secular intellec-tuals, the Bible reveals a missing dimension in the quest for peace. Theevidence of history illustrates the sobering consequences of failing tounderstand this essential information. While many today assume thatit is impossible to accurately predict the future, Bible prophecy clearlyreveals how peace will come to this earth. When you understand what

The Bloodiest Century

Violence and warfare haveplagued mankind for thousands ofyears, but recent years have beenamong the most violent of all.Prominent British historian NiallFerguson notes: “The twentieth cen-tury was the bloodiest era in histo-ry… between 167 million and 188million died because of organized vio-lence” (Foreign Affairs, Sept–Oct2006, p. 61). Ferguson asserts that“the Second World War [whichclaimed some 55 million lives] wasthe greatest man-made catastrophe ofall time” (War of the World, p. xxxiv). He asks: “What made the twentiethcentury… so bloody? After all, thehundred years after 1900 were a timeof unparalleled progress” which sawknowledge explode, technologyadvance, life spans increase and thequality of life for many reach unprece-dented levels (ibid., p. xxxv). In hissearch for the causes of modern vio-lence, professor Ferguson observes:“It might have been expected thatsuch prosperity would eliminate thecauses of war. But much of the worstviolence of the twentieth centuryinvolved relatively wealthy countries”(Foreign Affairs, Sept–Oct 2006, p.62). After evaluating the factors mostcommonly suggested as causes ofwars and violence—the availability ofmore destructive weaponry, economiccrises, the appearance of megalomani-ac dictators, and extreme ideologies—“None is able to explain convincinglywhy lethal conflict happened whenand where it did” (ibid., p. 64).

In Ferguson’s analysis, the threekey root causes of 20th-century vio-lence are the rise of ethnic conflict, economic volatility (sluggish or rapidlyexpanding economies that destabilizesocieties) and the decline of empires

(Ferguson, p. xli). He is not alonein recognizing that these factorsare once again erupting on theworld stage, and he warns that “ifthe history of the twentieth centu-ry is any guide, then the fragileedifice of civilization can veryquickly collapse” (ibid., p. 645).Ferguson concludes his scholarlystudy of war with these words:“We shall avoid another century ofconflict only if we understand theforces that caused the last one—the dark forces that conjure upethnic conflict and imperial rivalryout of economic crisis, and in sodoing negate our common human-ity. They are forces that stir withinus all” (ibid., p. 646). The soberinglesson of the 20th century is thatwe have yet to understand the realcauses of war, or the real way toachieve peace on earth!

Dreams That Failed

The world’s bloodiest centuryalso saw repeated and unprece-dented global efforts to eliminatewar and promote peace, yet noneof those humanly devised schemesmanaged to achieve the ultimategoal of world peace. In the yearsjust after World War I—the so-called “war to end all wars” whichwas also called a war to “make theworld safe for democracy”—politi-cal leaders in America and Europeformed the League of Nations “toguarantee international coopera-tion and to achieve internationalpeace and security” (CivilizationPast & Present, Brummett et al.,pp. 762–3). The League of Nations“was the first systematic and thor-ough attempt to create an organi-zation designed to prevent war andpromote peace” (ibid., p. 764).World leaders’ efforts to create andsustain the League “grew out ofthe desire of people throughoutthe world to prevent war forever”

(The World Book Encyclopedia,50th ed, vol. 12, p. 140). However, the United States eventuallyrefused to join the organization, other nations refused to cooperatein this global experiment and theLeague proved itself unable tokeep peace in the world andunable to prevent new wars.

After World War II, thenations of the world made anoth-er attempt to prevent war andpromote peace on earth. In 1945,the world’s most powerful coun-tries formed the United Nationswith an agenda very similar tothat of the failed League ofNations. As a former U.S. Armygeneral, U.S. President DwightEisenhower, once observed: “Withall its defects, with all the fail-ures… the UN still representsman’s best-organized hope to sub-stitute the conference table for thebattlefield” (ibid.). However, inthe 60 years since its founding, the UN has failed to find the wayto peace or to eliminate the caus-es of war. Endless rounds of nego-tiations, and dozens of efforts dis-patching “UN peacekeepers” toareas of conflict, have also failedto solve the problem of war.

In the 20th century, the twoworld wars began in Europe andfirst involved European powers. With that history in mind, vision-ary leaders in Europe have workedto bind the nations of Europetogether by treaties and tradeagreements, and by creatingtransnational governmental struc-tures that make up the EuropeanUnion—including the EuropeanCommission, a EuropeanParliament, a European Court, aEuropean Bank and a fledglingEuropean Army. The goal is tobind the nations of Europe tightlytogether in a European Union inorder to prevent another war inEurope. However, the EU was

powerless to prevent the recentgenocidal conflict in the Balkans. The EU has also been unable toprevent international terrorismfrom striking the nations ofEurope. In spite of a century ofhuman efforts to find ways to pro-mote world peace, we are current-ly witnessing an emerging “clashof civilizations,” as violent Muslimextremists square off against theso-called “Christian nations” ofthe Western world. While many ofthe world’s people want peace,Ferguson notes, “another globalconflict is brewing today” and thepowder keg that could make thatconflict explode appears to lie inthe Middle East (Foreign Affairs,Sept–Oct 2006, p. 74).

A Vital MissingDimension

Why have the efforts of someof the best minds in the world—working diligently to prevent vio-lent conflicts and promotepeace—failed to achieve thesenoble goals? Is there a crucialdimension that political and reli-gious leaders of this world havefailed to grasp or understand?Incredible as it may seem to secu-lar-oriented minds today, the Biblereveals why human beings havestruggled in vain to find the wayto peace. Long ago, the prophetIsaiah issued this sobering warn-ing to those who reject the coun-sel of the Eternal God: “The wayof peace they have not known, and there is no justice in theirways; They have made themselvescrooked paths; Whoever takes thatway shall not know peace” (Isaiah59:8). More than 2,500 years ago,the real God of this universeexplained how efforts to achievepeace and prevent conflicts byhuman means alone—diplomacy, treaties, demonstrations, armed

Page 24: LCG street return - Tomorrow's World...fear having to pay a dowry at the marriage of a daugh-ter. And throughout the Muslim world, women are sys-tematically held down, degraded and

2244 TTWWMM

intervention, nuclear deterrents and internationalorganizations that attempt to promote cooperation—would not work in the long run if they ignored a fun-damental dimension that God has revealed in theScriptures.

We find this vital key to real peace described inthe writings of Israel’s King David, whom God called“a man after My own heart” (Acts 13:22). David stat-ed plainly in Scripture: “Great peace have those wholove Your law, and nothing causes them to stumble”(Psalm 119:165). Centuries later, the prophet Isaiahemphasized this same vital key: “The work of right-eousness will be peace, and the effect of righteous-ness [will be] quietness and assurance forever”(Isaiah 32:17). The Bible explains how righteousnessinvolves obeying the laws and commandments ofGod (Psalm 119:172). However, this essential dimen-

sion—the need to obey God’s instructions about theway to achieve peace—is not part of the mentality ofpolitical and religious leaders of this world today.

God repeatedly warned the nation of Israel that itwould reap serious consequences because “you haveforsaken the LORD your God, and the fear of Me is notin you” (Jeremiah 2:19). The prophets castigated mis-guided religious leaders for not explaining the trueway to peace, observing that “from the prophet even tothe priest, everyone deals falsely. They have healed thehurt of My people slightly [superficially], saying‘Peace, peace!’ when there is no peace!” (Jeremiah6:13–14; 8:11). Today, popes and preachers light can-dles and lead prayers for peace and for victory in com-bat, without explaining what the Bible reveals aboutthe way to peace—that the true way to prevent warand promote peace involves learning to obey the laws

of God. Isaiah also prophesied of atime when the “ambassadors ofpeace shall weep bitterly” over thefailure of their efforts to preventwar and promote peace (Isaiah33:7). Isaiah’s words could notmore aptly describe the tragediesof the 20th century—when suchunprecedented efforts as thehumanly devised League ofNations and the United Nationsfailed to prevent the bloodiestdecades in all of human history!

How Peace Will Come

But are we doomed to sufferfrom endless conflict and blood-shed between the nations andpeoples of this world? Is thereany real hope for true peace onearth? Here again, the Biblereveals exciting answers, whichmany religious leaders fail toexplain—and may not understandor even believe. The Bible clearlystates that Jesus Christ will returnto this earth (Matthew 24:30–31;John 14:3; Acts 1:6–11;Revelation 3:11). His feet willstand on the Mount of Olives(Zechariah 14:1–4) overlookingJerusalem. He will return at atime when the nations of thisworld are involved in a globalstruggle that would see the end ofthe human race if it were notstopped in time (Matthew 24:6–8,21–22). At His return, JesusChrist will take control of thekingdoms of this earth and estab-lish a world government, whichwill begin in Jerusalem and even-tually spread around the earth(Revelation 11:15–19; Isaiah2:2–4). This is a fundamental partof the gospel that Jesus pro-claimed at His first coming. The Bible has long foretoldthat in this coming “kingdom ofGod,” the saints will rule withJesus Christ on this earth (Daniel7:27; Matthew 19:28; Revelation5:10). The saints—individualswho have been called and trainedto apply the laws of God in thisphysical life—will begin toexplain the laws of God to allhuman beings and show theworld the way to real peace. Thisis what the prophet Isaiah wasdescribing when he recorded,“For out of Zion [Jerusalem] shallgo forth the law… He shall judgebetween the nations… They shallbeat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks; nation shall not lift upsword against nation, neithershall they learn war anymore”(Isaiah 2:2–4). The Bible clearlyreveals that a time is comingwhen there will be no more mili-tary academies, armed forces, defense industries or weaponsdealers—these will be consignedto the pages of history at thereturn of the Savior!

Jesus Christ, ruling as the“Prince of Peace,” will establishthe government of God on thisearth, and He will usher in an era

of peace that will last forever.Isaiah records this inspiringprophecy: “Of the increase of Hisgovernment and peace there willbe no end, upon the throne ofDavid and over His kingdom, toorder it and establish it with judg-ment and justice from that timeforward, even forever” (Isaiah9:7). The Bible reveals that theway to real peace will involveteaching human beings how tolive by the immutable laws ofGod. People will learn that it iswrong to kill, steal, lie, lust orrape—even in the name of reli-gion (Exodus 20:12–17). Theywill learn that it is wrong even toharbor hatreds or bigotries, andthey will learn how to come toagreements in times of conflict, instead of going to war (Matthew5:21–26; 18:15:20). They willlearn that seeking revenge is notan effective way to find peace(Matthew 5:38–48). In God’s com-ing kingdom and government, thelaws of God will not be dismissedas simple-minded platitudes; theywill be backed up lovingly, yetfirmly, by the power of God(Psalm 2:7–9; Revelation 2:27).The Bible reveals that this is howswords will ultimately be beateninto plowshares, and real peacewill finally come to this earth.

Elsewhere in this issue of Tomorrow’s World maga-zine, you have read about wars of the past. However, evenwhile you are reading this article in January 2007, manyparts of our world are at war right now! Every kind ofconflict is being waged. From clashes of nation-state andrebel armies on traditional battlefields, to small-scale hit-and-run guerilla raids and low-tech banditry, humanblood is flowing in an ever-widening river of pain, suffer-ing and death. This chaos threatens to engulf the Westerndemocracies in a rising tide of international hatred, terror, rebellion, carnage and economic upheaval that will leadto the dramatic end-time events prophesied in the pagesof your Bible! “For they are spirits of demons, performingsigns, which go out to the kings of the earth and of thewhole world to gather them to the battle of that great dayof God Almighty” (Revelation 16:14).

Many of today’s wars are over control of the dwindlingsupplies of natural resources needed to keep nations’economies afloat—and their people alive. As populationpressures grow in arid parts of the globe, nations are evencompeting for the most basic resources of all: arable landand water. Other wars involve age-old tribal or ethnic ani-mosities, often between groups within the same country. Each group seeks its own advantage, rather than the goodof the nation. “Where do wars and fights come fromamong you? Do they not come from your desires forpleasure that war in your members? You lust and do nothave. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fightand war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. Youask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that youmay spend it on your pleasures” (James 4:1–3).

Warfare, or the threat of it, is a deterrent to foreigninvestment and development. Many nations now in thethroes of political chaos or actual conflict are sources ofvaluable raw materials and petroleum reserves. Not onlyare these resources sought by the industrialized nations;

less developed countries also seek them as they struggleto establish manufacturing-based economies and lifttheir peoples out of severe poverty. Most of these war-torn countries are in dire need of economic developmentand education for their peoples, in order to increase theirstandard of living. Yet because of greed, covetousnessand nations’ jockeying for advantage over one another, leaders often seek to divert attention away from theirnations’ own problems by inflaming among the discon-tented masses a hatred against and jealousy toward theirneighbors. This sets the stage for war, when one countryfeels entitled to steal the resources of another.

When the Japanese attacked the U.S. fleet at PearlHarbor on December 7, 1941, one motive was to stopAmerica from being able to intervene against Japaneseplans to seize Southeast Asia’s raw material resources.Because of an oil embargo the U.S. had placed on Japan, that nation had only a 90-day reserve of petroleum.Without fuel, Japan’s economy would have ground to ahalt, its people would have faced unemployment andmassive food shortages—and its war effort inManchuria could not have been sustained. That oilembargo pushed Japan to the extreme of launching a“do-or-die” war many high-ranking Japanese militaryofficials feared they could not win. When the attackbegan, Japanese pilots discovered that the Americanaircraft carriers were not in port at Pearl Harbor. Japan’sfate was sealed. Since then, economic pressures havecontinued to provoke wars around the world.

Many of the nations battling piracy are near impor-tant shipping lanes, and are also involved in armedconflicts and banditry on land. When economies aredisrupted by war, and people are unable to earn a livingfrom their normal occupations, some will raid theirneighbors or harass unarmed merchant vessels, cruiseliners and even oil platforms. When nations must then

divert scarce resources to fighting off piracy at sea, lawenforcement on land often suffers, and nations fightingpiracy may fall victim to increased banditry on land.

News reports contain accounts of criminals board-ing cruise ships to kill someone who had witnessed acrime, or to hold a ship’s crew or passengers for ran-som. Once a smaller ship has been seized in thePhilippines or Indonesia, where most of today’s pirateattacks occur, those nations’ small, outdated naviesfind it almost impossible to locate the missing vesselshidden among thousands of inlets and islands.

Where piracy is a threat, the economic cost to pro-tect coastal and high-seas commerce is staggering.Insurance premiums are high for ships and their car-goes, adding to the financial strain placed on theworld’s merchant fleets—already under duress becauseof high fuel prices. In 2000, marine insurers sustained$16 billion in losses due to piracy alone, and the prob-lem has only grown worse since then.

The world’s great trading powers—dependent onthe sea lane arteries that deliver their nations’ commer-cial life’s blood of raw materials, petroleum productsand finished goods, upon which their economiesthrive—will inevitably need to send more of their navalforces to sea to protect merchant shipping, as piracyand banditry increase in the years ahead. This will onlyadd to the political stresses threatening fragile relation-ships in many parts of the globe.

Jesus Christ foresaw the events that are makingnews headlines today. He told his followers not to beoverly concerned, because these occurrences are notthe end—but rather are the beginning of greater disas-ters that would lie just ahead. “But when you hear ofwars and commotions, do not be terrified; for thesethings must come to pass first, but the end will notcome immediately.” Then He said to them, “Nation will

rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom”(Luke 21:9–10). The increasing frequency of war andviolence today is preparing the world for future globalwar on an unprecedented scale. Conflicts and troubleswe see today are just the tip of the iceberg. As morecivil, religious and regional conflicts break out in polit-ically unstable nations, watch for more reports of small-and large-scale banditry, piracy and warfare in thenews, but take heart—Jesus Christ is coming, soon!

Old FriendsOld FriendsAn observer of the modern scene recently

noted that people today do not have many friends;some people have none at all. With the hectic paceof modern life, it seems that many do not take thetime or have the opportunity to develop lastingfriendships.

As life progresses and the years roll by, ourfriendships change. Interests diminish wherethey once flourished. People move away to pur-sue careers, or to escape problems and startafresh in a new location. Companies or evenwhole industries restructure, disrupting the livesof employees. Workers are “downsized” or “out-sourced” so a firm can survive or simply improveits profitability. In the process, highly valuedbusiness friendships evaporate, leaving thoseaffected feeling empty and abandoned.

When families break up, relationships that wereonce comfortable and rewarding can be shattered, deeply wounding those involved. After sufferinggreat hurt and disillusionment, some withdraw andare slow to establish new relationships, for fear ofbeing hurt yet once again.

Close friendships today are strained by distanceand time—by long commutes that soak up hoursonce spent with loved ones, by schools far awayfrom a child’s neighborhood, and by two-incomehouseholds leaving little time for family membersto share with eachother or withfriends. Even mod-ern technology isa “mixed bless-ing”—instant mes-saging and e-mailallow us to stay intouch, but remindus that we areapart.

The book ofProverbs, in your Bible, says much about theimportance of friends—and shows us how to havegood friends. For example: “A man who has friendsmust himself be friendly” (Proverbs 18:24). Weneed to do our part to attract good friends.

A friend can be counted upon: “A friend lovesat all times and a brother is born for adversity”(Proverbs 17:17). A true friend will tell you what

you need to hear, even if it is unpleasant: “Faithfulare the wounds of a friend” (Proverbs 27:6). It isimportant that we be loyal to our friends: “Do not

forsake your ownfriend or yourfather’s friend”(Proverbs 27:10).Indeed, we can domuch to build last-ing friendship ifwe apply godlyprinciples found inthe Bible.

Scripture alsoreveals that wehave one friendwho can always becounted upon—now, and for all

time. Jesus Christ told His disciples: “You are myfriends if you do what ever I command you. Nolonger do I call you servants, for a servant does notknow what his master is doing; but I have calledyou friends, for all things I heard from my father Ihave made known to you” (John 15:14–15).

A little more than 20 years ago, Roger Millerrecorded “Old Friends,” a wonderful song that stillresonates today. He sang:

“Old friends… Lord, when all my workis done / Bless my life, grant me one oldfriend / At least one old friend.”

We all hope to make many goodfriends in this life. But the friendshipthat matters most is the one that willtranscend all adversity, and even death. If you have not already done so, makefriends with the soon-coming King ofkings and Lord of lords—Jesus Christ. That Friend told us, “You are Myfriends if you do whatever I command

you” (John 15:14). To learn more about how todo as He commanded, and establish yourfriendship with Him, please write or go to ourwww.tomorrowsworld.org Web site to requestyour free copy of our booklet, What Is a TrueChristian? It may change your life—now, andforever!

and sat in ashes” (vv. 5–6). Canyou imagine any world leadertoday humbling himself in thatway before God?

The Assyrians responded toJonah’s warning. They repented oftheir evil ways, and God sparedthem. This happened in theeighth century BC. God sparedNinevah for many years, and evenused the nation to punish ancientIsrael and bring its people intocaptivity. After Assyria capturedthe “Northern Kingdom”—Israel—that kingdom was lost tohistory and its peoples becameknown as the “lost ten tribes.”

The prophet Isaiah recordsGod’s purpose in using Assyria topunish Israel. Isaiah quotes Godas saying, “Woe to Assyria, therod of My anger and the staff inwhose hand is My indignation. Iwill send him against an ungodlynation, and against the people ofMy wrath I will give him charge,to seize the spoil, to take the prey, and to tread them down like themire of the streets. Yet he doesnot mean so, nor does his heartthink so; but it is in his heart todestroy, and cut off not a fewnations” (Isaiah 10:5–7).

God had warned theKingdom of Israel to repent, butits people refused to reform. So,the Assyrians conquered the ten-tribed House of Israel, andmoved the captives far to the eastin Assyria. Israel’s final captivitytook place around 721BC.Eventually, however, Assyriareturned to its carnal ways, and in612BC God allowed the Medes todestroy Ninevah.

God had also sent His warn-ings to the Kingdom of Judah, butthat nation also persisted in itssins. So, God used the kingdom

of Babylon under KingNebuchadnezzar to punish theHouse of Judah. A majority ofJews were deported to Babylonover a period of two decades, ending with the destruction ofJerusalem in 586BC. As a youngman, Daniel and three of hisfriends were taken captive andtrained in the culture and litera-ture of Babylon. Those youngmen persisted in the godly valuesthey had been taught in Judah, and God was able to use Daniel tointerpret Nebuchadnezzar’sdream—and to give the goodnews of a coming great Kingdomthat will stand forever!

Yes, the Kingdom of God willstand forever! You can count onit! That is the good news we striveto share with you in this maga-zine! Even if your nation does notheed God’s word, you will beblessed individually if you believeand act on God’s revealed truth! And that truth reveals the futuresof “modern Israel”—the nationsdescended from the “lost” tentribes—including the U.S., GreatBritain and the British-descendednations, and many of the peoplesof northwest Europe. If you donot already have a copy, pleasewrite or call to request a free copyof our informative booklet, The

United States and Great Britain inProphecy. It reveals the biblicalorigins of our Western nations.Bible prophecy reveals what histo-rians, world leaders and politicalanalysts do not know! But you, asa faithful student of your Bible, can understand.

As regular readers ofTomorrow’s World know, much ofBible prophecy is “dual”—there isan end-time fulfillment parallel toan ancient fulfillment. Indeed, prophecy shows that the end-timedescendants of Assyria will onceagain punish the end-timedescendants of the lost ten tribesof Israel. Will you be ready whenthis happens? Do you know thesigns to watch for? Keep readingTomorrow’s World, and studyingyour Bible, and you will learnhow to understand world eventsin the light of Bible prophecy.

Whether or not the westernnations learn the lessons of histo-ry, we can repent individually—and we must. The day of God’sjudgment against humanity’sfailed ways is approaching fast. Those nations and individualswho turn to God will be blessed. What should you do? Do not waitfor your nation to change. Now isthe time for you to seek God withall your heart.

young female teachers were found slain in the westernpart of the city” (Charlotte Observer, October 20, 2006).

Also, many heinous crimes against women arebeing committed in Darfur, the Congo and other partsof Africa. It is widely reported that literally tens of thou-sands of women and young girls are being systemati-cally raped, tortured and mutilated on a regular basis.

The old Protestant song, “This is my Father’sworld,” does not seem to resonate any more, does it?

For, ever since Adam and Eve turned their backs onGod and His laws, this has definitely been Satan’s world. The Apostle John describes the “serpent of old, calledthe Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world”(Revelation 12:9). The Apostle Paul describes Satan asthe “prince of the power of the air, the spirit who nowworks in the sons of disobedience” (Ephesians 2:2).

All women—as well as men—are made “in the imageof God” (Genesis 1:27). We all must recognize that onlythrough the practice of true Christianity can women—aswell as men—attain their full human potential. The Sonof God gave His life for women—as well as for men. Andone of Jesus Christ’s final acts before His crucifixion wasto honor and help look after his mother. As He hungdying on the cross—in excruciating pain—Jesus told

John, his closest personal friend among the disciples:“‘Behold your mother’. And from that hour that discipletook her [Mary] to his own home” (John 19:27).

The love, kindness and patient tenderness that wenormally associate with our mothers, sisters, wives anddaughters makes decent men deeply ashamed of thehorrifying brutality and abuse to which increasing mil-lions of women are now being subjected. But, in spite ofall the sincere efforts of human beings, this abuse willonly grow worse until the day God Himself intervenesand sends the real Jesus Christ back to this earth asKing of kings. God describes the blessings of His peopleat that time: “Therefore in their land they shall possessdouble; everlasting joy shall be theirs” (Isaiah 61:7).And “they shall dwell safely, and no one shall makethem afraid” (Ezekiel 34:28).

The growing abuse and humiliation of women inall parts of the world is an important reason why weshould take seriously God’s promise of a soon-comingworld government under Jesus Christ and His resurrect-ed saints. It is another reason we should fervently pray,“Thy Kingdom come.”

they genuinely seek first HisKingdom. This must be the pri-mary goal of a Christian’s entirelife! Remember Jesus’ command:“But seek first the Kingdom ofGod and His righteousness and allthese things shall be added toyou” (Matthew 6:33). For God’sKingdom is indeed very real. It iscoming soon. We need to realizethis more fully, and focus ourminds on preparing to be in thatKingdom, where today’sChristians will have the privilege

of teaching a suffering and war-torn world the way of peace andjoy that God has outlinedthroughout the Bible.

Each of us needs to surrendertotally to let Christ live His obe-dient life within us, so He canmake with us—as spiritualIsrael—the “new covenant” clear-ly described in His word: “Butthis is the covenant that I willmake with the house of Israelafter those days, says the LORD: Iwill put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and Iwill be their God, and they shallbe My people” (Jeremiah 31:33).

May God grant each of us theunderstanding of His Plan, and ofthe magnificent purpose He isworking out at this time. Andmay He give us the zeal to pre-pare for the time when we canhelp and serve and teach a suffer-ing humanity the ways and lawsof the great God, who gives us lifeand breath. Truly, becoming aspirit-born son of God and havinga part in the very “real” Kingdomor Government of God—whichJesus Christ will soon set up onthis earth—should be the overar-ching goal of every Christian’slife!
