“Spend enough time in a state of frenetic shallowness and you permanently reduce your capacity to perform deep work.” ~Cal Newport

Lent is a time to go deep. The theme chosen for this program year was “Looking Back, Moving Forward, Growing Deeper.” We have done a lot of the first two. We have looked back and celebrated, we have moved forward with decisions, plans and programs, so now we need to focus on Growing Deeper. And Lent is a great time for that. It is also a vitally necessary time. In the past 10 years you know what has happened to our society. We all have become connected and disconnected in unimaginable ways. We have at our finger tips the means to be distracted every waking hour of our day. We have the capability to be connected electronically with people around the world and from every aspect of our lives and yet we are more lonely then ever before.

During the Christian season of Lent, we take 5 weeks to read and listen and sing about Jesus confronting those who misunderstood him. He sets them all straight and he pays for it with his life, on the cross. There are many things you can accuse Jesus of, but one of them is NOT shallowness. Jesus went deep with the people he met. He touched people on

the soul level. And it all started with 40 days in the wilderness.

Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River, heard the voice of God tell him who he was and from there went into a place of emptiness, the wilderness, the desert. He was alone. And I think that is where you and I do our best and deepest work, when we journey with Jesus in those lonely places. We do deep work when we are not distracted and outraged at the latest insanity. We grow deeper when we allow God to work in and through us. And it begins Ash Wednesday with a reminder that our time is limited.

A wise friend reminded me this week that the Lenten journey is not about progress but process. We goal-oriented types love to make progress but Lent calls us into the process of letting God restore our soul and heal our heart. Do you have something more important to do? ~Pr. Bob Albing

• Jody Harris, Treasurer, has simplified the accounting system making it easier to understand for the council and committees. She has faithfully served as a “Sunday Chat” leader for youth as well. Thanks for everything you do, Jody!

• There is a beautiful new lectern in the Gathering Place thanks to the woodworking skills and artistry of Gary Gemar.

• The mailboxes in Schmidt Hall have been removed and a new storage system for name tags is in development. Updating the main building continues with plans for painting SH and installing new vinyl flooring in the serving area, kitchen, and bathrooms.

• Members of the LAM Christian Academy Board attended the February council meeting to share their addendum to the new lease agreement and answer questions. LCM’s congregation council took their comments under advisement and will continue to work out the details of the lease before it expires on July 31, 2019. ~Your Council

LCM Book Group. A Hope More Powerful Than The Sea, The

Journey of Doaa Al Zamel, One Refugee’s Incredible Story of Love, Loss and Survival by Melissa Fleming tells the true story of a Syrian girl whose life was upended in 2011 by her country’s civil war. She and her family escape to Egypt, but life for Syrians there is very dangerous. Doaa and her fiance decide to flee Egypt and go to Europe for the safety and education offered there, but four days after setting sail on a dilapidated fishing boat along with five hundred other refugees their boat is struck and begins to sink. Doaa’s struggle for survival depends on her staying strong and not losing hope. Author Melissa Fleming is Head of Communications and Chief Spokesperson for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. This is an extraordinary story of the strength of the human spirit against overwhelming odds. Join the LCM Book Group for discussion on Tuesday, March 19th, 5:30pm at The Well-Read Moose bookstore in Riverstone. For more information, contact Kristine Wold at 208-660-4410.

Notes from the Treasurer... • The 2019 budget was approved at our January Annual Meeting. This budget reflects a 2.6% increase in offering and LAM Christian Academy income over last year. Please let me know if you have any questions about the budget or financial reports, which are posted on the Council bulle-tin board in Schmidt Hall.

• We spent almost $2,000 more than our income in January with the normal (for January) high bills for snow removal, gas, and electricity. In 2018, we received 6.5% of our annual offering in January. If this holds true for 2019, we will reach our budgeted income.

• If you would like offering envelopes, please let Romona, in the church office, know so that we can get you set up.

• Thrivent Choice Dollars: This is a great season for Thrivent members to live generously through choosing to direct their Thrivent Choice Dollars to your church. (Council, during their February 10th meeting, has designated the 2019 Thrivent Choice Dollars for our Youth & Family Ministry!) The deadline for directing 2018 dollars, is March 31st. Being a Good Neighbor

Accessing the Gathering Place during leased hours

Yes, LCM owns the buildings and land that make up the LCM campus BUT, as a congregation, LCM has decided, as part of its outreach, to lease part of the campus to a tenant AND allow community groups to reserve space for meetings/events. With this decision comes certain responsibilities to LCM members/attendees.

When space is reserved/leased, it is no longer free to be entered at will.

In the case of our tenant, LAM Christian Academy (LAM), they are running a school during leased hours and have certain protocols in place to enhance the safety of their students and staff. If access to the Gathering Place cannot be avoided during leased hours (M-F, 7am-5:30pm) arrangements need to be made IN ADVANCE (at least 24 hours notice) with LCM’s church office, so approval can be arranged with LAM; and all entry protocols must be followed (signing in, wearing a visitor’s badge, having an escort).

For other reserved space, entry must wait until the meeting/event is over.

If you have any questions, please contact a LCM Council Member or the church office.

Please help provide fun for the children’s Egg Hunt on Easter Sunday by donating:

INDIVIDUALLY WRAPPED candy and/or EMPTY plastic eggs

They can be placed in the collection boxes in the Narthex and the Gathering Place beginning March 17th.

I get to spend a lot of time with young people teaching them how very much Jesus loves us and how he would like us to treat others in return. I recently went with Jeff Lien and 4 boys to Lutherhaven winter camp. It was very snowy Friday when we arrived. Serendipitously, we were assigned rooms in the retreat center. I had a lovely room all my own as Jeff was down the hall with the boys. The other group that was supposed to be on that floor with us had to cancel so we had the entire main floor basically to ourselves. On our way back to the cars to get our things, I slipped and fell. There was a loud pop and a lot of pain in my left ankle. Fortunately, I had my own Orthopedic PA with me. As Jeff is trying to assess how bad the ankle was, I’m just lying there on the side of road not talking, just nodding and grunting. From around the corners of my brain fog, I could hear the boys talking about going for help. Once I was back up in the welcome center, I was told that all four came running in yelling, “you have to come quick, Beckie fell down and something is really wrong because she isn’t talking.” It was decided that even if I went to ER they wouldn’t do anything until Mon-day. I decided to stay and hobble around, keep my foot up with ice on it as much as possible, and stay with the boys for the retreat. The boys unloaded all my things, took them to my room, loaded it all back up for me on Sunday, and took very good care of me all weekend. During one of our sessions we talked, in the small groups we came with, about how it is easy to love people who love us and easy to forgive people who we love. The boys all agreed that it was easier to be considerate of my foot because they knew me. As I hobbled around camp, I had to be very careful as kids ran past, jostling and bumping, not paying attention or really caring. Out of the over 80 kids there, other than my own, there was only one other little boy who would always ask if there was anything I needed, how I was feeling, and would step aside to let me go ahead of him in the food line. He was very quiet and soft spoken with a gentle spirit and found me in worship on Sunday to tell me he was praying for my foot and hoped it got better soon. It made me think—How often am I like all the ones that were in too big of a hurry, jostling, and shoving my way through life, not taking time to notice if someone could use some extra encouragement or help. I was very proud of our boys and thankful for all the help they offered over the weekend. I agree with them that it is much easier to be considerate of those we already know and love. I pray that I am often, also, like the little boy who stepped outside his comfort zone to offer comfort and support to someone he didn’t know and would never see again.

I’m a Lutheran: LUCILLE KERNOHAN by Dave Jacobson

Ninety-two-year-old Lucille Kernohan, has been a member of LCM since 1992 when she and husband, Tom, joined the church. Daughter and son-in-law, Barb & Jim Midgley, and their three daughters were the first of the family to join LCM when Pastor Karl Schmidt met Jim and invited the family to try out the congregation. These days, Lucille doesn’t get to church as often as she would like because mornings are not good for her.

When the Kernohan’s joined the church, Lucille joined every activity she could – quilting, kitchen duty, etc., to get to know people. Barb indicated for a short time she introduced Lucille “as my mother” but after a while Lucille was well known in church circles as an active “doer,” then Barb shifted and introduced herself as Lucille’s daughter. Other interests she

has or had were flowers, working in her yard, sewing for the holiday bazaar, and now her Chihuahua rescue dog. She reads two newspapers cover to cover each day.

Lucille and Tom followed the Midgley’s to CDA in 1991 after they retired as longtime telephone company employees in the Los Angeles area. Lucille was a 35-year telephone pioneer, working first as an operator, then a supervisor, followed by long term duty in the Anaheim office plant department (i.e., assigning numbers).

For six years before her marriage to Tom, she had been a single parent with 3 children. Tom was a widower with 3 children, and they became “our” family of 6. The kids are Barb (ID), Kathy (CO), Allan (ID), Ralph (CA), Larry (MN), and a deceased daughter. The year, 1968, was a wedding year for the family—3 kids married between March and May, plus her marriage to Tom later that year. Tom died in 2003.

Born in Kansas City followed by some childhood in Missouri, parents and 3 children headed to Los Angeles in 1934 where uncles recruited her father to the service station business, Lucille described that job as 7-day a week duty. It sounded like her father then moved to another intensive 7-day a week job as a chicken farmer in the “distant” Buena Park area. She remembered as a kid stepping outside and enjoying the fragrant scent of the orange groves.

Lucille’s paternal grandfather was a Dunkard minister though her parents and siblings were unchurched as was Tom’s family. In the evening quiet of her, apartment she reflects on forgiveness and the need to forgive to be forgiven., encouraged by a Living Lutheran article she on forgiveness, and the want for life to be truthful. She seemed to be saying she’s willing to clean her side of the street, maybe not forgetting but taking the sting out of the past via forgiveness. After attending funerals recently, she has reflected on the 23rd Psalm, the comfort therein ringing true for her at this time.

When daughter Barb was asked about her mom’s good qualities she shared Lucille is easy to get along with and is kind and caring. Lucille heaped praise on son-in-law Jim saying he is a prince of a guy though Jim claimed Lucille is paid handsomely for her praises. Lucille offered a broad 100-watt smile and an easy hearty laugh when she talked about her family – 19 grandchildren, 26 great grands, and one great-great-grandchild. Obviously, she is a proud matriarch, enjoying and appreciating her progeny. This article was inspired by the “I am Lutheran” series in the Living Lutheran magazine.

THANK YOU for volunteering to serve your church during Sunday morning worship. Your service is greatly appreciated. Since we cannot anticipate vacations, work schedules, emergencies, or other situations, please trade with someone else on the schedule when there is a conflict; then contact the church office of the change, by the Wednesday before, so it can be reflected in the bulletin.
