Message From The System President
Dr. Walter G. Bumphus
As we complete the fifth year of our Leadership Development Institute (LDI), the Louisiana Community and Technical College System Board of Supervisors and I could not be more pleased or proud with the status of our Leadership Development Program. The national conversation regarding the need to develop future leaders for our nation’s community and technical colleges has never been more intense than it is today. The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) recently released a publication called A Leading Forward Report entitled Growing Your Own Leaders. I was delighted that the report highlighted and documented the excellent progress that the LCTCS has made regarding our Leadership Development Program.
The Board’s vision for creating a Leadership Development Program has resulted in a high percentage of our LDI graduates either being promoted within their own colleges or receiving promotions across the System. Our leaders have enhanced their skill sets by the experiences they have had in receiving mentoring, hands on experi-ence, and the opportunity to hear “Best Practices” by nationally recognized community and technical college chancellors, presidents, and administrative leaders from across the country.
I would like to acknowledge the outstanding contributions of Dr. Angel Royal, as Program Coordinator, in continuing to have our partici-pants experience a world-class leadership curricu-lum, as well as world-class leaders, who they have had the opportunity to hear from on a monthly basis during the course of this year’s program. I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank all of our national presenters, as well as those presenters from within our System and State, for the contributions they have made to the professional development of the participants in our LDI. Finally, I’d like to thank those members of this year’s Leadership Develop-ment Institute class for their commitment of time, effort, and passion, as they have approached this year’s program. I am truly convinced that we are indeed “growing our own” and are developing a cadre of leaders who will be able to continue to move the LCTCS forward in the years to come.
Specifics About Our Program
The Louisiana Community & Technical College System (LCTCS) is pleased to present the participants of the Fifth Annual LCTCS Leadership Development Institute (LDI).
Our program has been cited as one of the top statewide programs in the country for leadership and professional development training. Featured in the 2006 American Association Community College publication, Growing Your Own Leaders: Community Colleges Step Up, the LDI has been our two-year college system’s unified response for develop-ing emerging leaders. Without the assistance and coopera-tion of all of the colleges and campuses within the LCTCS, this program would not be possible.
Created in 2001 as a response to the impending “leadership” crisis, the LDI has trained 80 System employees. Of those employees, 35 have pursued promotions and have indicated that they attribute their new positions directly to the training provided through the LDI. At least 20 employees have participated in the program and have stated that it has provided them with the tools to be more effective in their current positions.
The LDI is a personal and professional journey designed to assist participants in realizing their potential for leadership. The Program is open to faculty members on at least 60% release time with administrative duties, and employees in mid-level positions (defined as Directors, Deans, Assistant Deans or others in equitable positions). A maximum of twenty-one individuals are selected to participate in this professional development opportunity.
Our participants engage in mentoring relationships, they participate in interactive feedback reports, projects, implementation and presentations, book discussions and internships. Further, the LDI participants are able to receive three hours of undergraduate or graduate credit for taking part in the program.
Leadership development is everyone’s responsibility. To that end, the System has continued to take a proactive approach in refining the LDI requirements to meet the ever-changing needs of the workplace.
