    About Personal Ancestral File Companion

Personal Ancestral File Companion is an advanced charting program for PersonalAncestral File versions 3, 4, and 5. It prints a variety of high quality genealogy chartsand reports directly from your Personal Ancestral File data files.

your word processor for further editing and printing.

Many options are available for customizing the reports to suit your particular needs, including colors and photos, which is now an option for several of these charts.Another special option is "Cousin Smart", which ensures that common ancestors or

descendants for two distant cousins who marry are not repeated on the same chartor report, thereby saving valuable space and paper.

The Companion allows you to print on any size of paper. Large charts can becreated by tiling many pages together or by printing on a large-scale plotter. Thesecharts and reports can be produced on printers supported by Windows, including ink

jet, laser, and even dot matrix printers.

The Register and Ahnentafel reports are automatically output to the word processorof your choice. From there you can perform additional editing such as addinggraphics to your report before printing. Currently supported word processors includeWordPerfect, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Works, Lotus Ami Pro, and Microsoft

    WordPad.

In addition, with the Companion you can preview your charts and reports beforeprinting, allowing you to save on printing costs. Fast "go to" and search functions arealso provided to make locating individual records easier. This is especially useful forlarge files.

    Other useful features

Run Personal Ancestral File. Run Personal Ancestral File conveniently fromwithin the Companion without exiting.

Compare to PRF Master Index. Automatically find individuals in PedigreeResource File (PRF) who may match people in your .paf file and prints areconciliation report of all matches.

higher) by clicking on Tools, PAF Companion on the Personal Ancestral File menubar.

    Files and Records

The files you use with the Companion are the same files used by Personal AncestralFile. The first time the Companion is opened, it will ask if you would like to search for yourPAF files. If you select yes, the program will automatically scan your computer's harddrive(s) for all your PAF files, versions 3.0 and higher. These files are then displayedwith their associated path (disk drive and folder location) in the Open dialog. Youmust select a file before you can view the records or print reports. The Companionwill remember the last file you worked on, and all future sessions will start with that

    file open.

Tip: If you choose not to scan when first opening the program, you can always do solater by selecting File, Scan disk for files on the menu, or by clicking the Scan Diskbutton in the Open dialog. You can also re-scan by following the same steps.

If you use PAF 3 and wouldprefer not to browse for your files you should choose the automatic scan for filesoption.

The Companion also allows you to assign more meaningful names to your filesand rename them later if you wish. See Section 2, Getting Started, AssigningNames to Your Files for more information.

Naming your files for the first time and renaming them later are both

    Section 3 Finding People

The Companion provides three convenient methods for finding individuals in your.paf file:

Name List. Use this option to browse all names in the file or go to aspecific individual.

Go To. Go directly to an individual record by entering a name, RIN1, or IDnumber2 .

Search. Find individuals who meet certain match criteria.

You can also go to an individual you have already visited by selecting them from theHistory List.

Name ListThe Name List presents the entire list of individuals contained in the .paf file. From the Name List you can search for specific individuals by surname and

given name (optional) or by RIN. The search function is recommended if youwant to search using criteria other than name.

TIP: If you enter a given name with no surname, the first person with that givenname and no surname will be displayed. Use the search function if you want to findallthe people with a specific given name.

For ease of browsing, the names are always displayed in alphabetical orderbeginning with the "Home person" specified in your Personal Ancestral File program.

You can choose to show individuals (that is, names) with RIN, birth and death dates,

1RIN (Record Identification Number). Personal Ancestral File assigns each individual record a record

identification number. This number is used to distinguish that individual from all others in the .paf file. Sincemany people in the file may have the same name, this number helps you quickly find a specific individual.

2ID number. This number is assigned by the original author or compiler(s) of this record. This number may not

be unique and can contain alpha characters or, as in many cases, nothing at all. It is another way individuals orgroups may be identified and found in the file.

SearchThe Companion offers a powerful search capability to help you findpeople in your .paf file. You can search using as little or as much asyou know about an individual in any of seven categories.

For example, if you know that the individual's last name is Pothier, you can searchfor Surname = Pothier. This search will find all individuals in the file with the surnamePothier (potentially a long list).

You can search using multiple criteria. For example, if you add Person = Male, onlymales with the surname Pothier will be listed. If you further specify Event = Birth andDate after1860, only male Pothiers born after 1860 will be listed.

You can also include a keyword search for one or more words in a name, title, place,or note. The more information you specify, the shorter the match list will be and theeasier it will be to find the person you are seeking.

Tip: The information you enter in the search screen is not case sensitive. Thismeans there is no difference between uppercase (A) and lowercase (a)characters or any combination of upper- and lowercase. For example, POTHIERis the same as Pothier.

To initiate the search function, you have two options:

From the menu bar, select Find and click Search.

From the toolbar, click on the Search button.

You can perform a search based on:

Title. Search for the person's title (the default isAnytitle).Contains. Enter one or more keywords that appear anywhere in the title, forexample, Capt.

Note: The Kin Search, like the kinship report, may take a long time to produce, depending on the size of the file and the number of relatives for the selected subject. To keep search time to a minimum, Kin Search stops at the first relationship itencounters between the chosen individual and another individual in the file. This mayor may not be the closest relationship between the two individuals.
