exI Docks che sorgono nella zona sud della città portuale di Le Havre, in Normandia, sono i più antichi realizzati in Francia. Se la città e, soprat-tutto, questa parte del suo porto, hanno subìto negli anni un progressivo processo di abban-dono, tale tendenza sta conoscendo una forte inversione grazie ad un importante piano di trasformazione e riqualificazione che prevede l’insediamento di un nuovo centro per il diverti-mento, la cultura e lo shopping. Una volta com-pletato il piano, questa area ospiterà residenze, un grande parco, una serra tropicale, cinema e centri commerciali. Il complesso acquatico pro-gettato da Jean Nouvel ed inaugurato nel luglio di quest’anno rappresenta uno dei primi tasselli di qualità di questo grande sistema di rilancio della città nel suo complesso. La demolizione degli hangar numero 38 e 39 che si allineavano lungo il Quai de la Réunion, ha liberato un vasto terreno che ha consentito di insediare il nuovo complesso a vocazione ludico-sportiva articola-to su una considerevole superficie in pianta (cir-ca 5.000mq) e sviluppato su due livelli principali in altezza.Il nuovo complesso acquatico comprende una piscina olimpionica riscaldata ad otto corsie regolamentari, profonda 1,80 metri, situata all’aperto, così come una piscina interna-ester-na di 286mq, profonda 1,20 metri, ed anche una vasca ludica coperta di 117mq equipaggiata con

giochi d’acqua ed animazioni per i bambini dai 3 agli 8 anni, oltre a saune, bagni turchi e palestre.Visto dall’esterno l’edificio è configurato come un parallelepipedo massivo scavato da aperture che lasciano intuire la complessità spaziale degli ambienti interni abitati dall’acqua, presentando-si allo stesso tempo ai fruitori come una sorta di carapace metallizzato, di color antracite, capace di reagire ai cambiamenti di tonalità del cielo di Normandia. L’ingresso situato su Quai de la Réu-nion, di fronte al futuro Centre de la Mer, che sa-rà completato nel 2011 sempre ad opera di Nou-vel, è scavato nella facciata, quasi a costituire il primo di una serie di spazi filtro che concretiz-zano il passaggio progressivo dall’esterno verso l’interno, dai colori del porto al bianco totale del nuovo edificio, dai suoni della città al riverbero ovattato delle stanze d’acqua delle vasche coper-te. Ciascuna vasca ha forme e dimensioni speci-fiche ed è caratterizzata da un tema differente. Dalle zone per i neonati da 0 a 3 anni, alla zona bambini dai 3 agli 8 anni fino all’area famiglie. Il complesso si articola secondo uno schema mu-tuato dalle terme romane, all’interno del quale le variazioni ambientali vanno scoperte nelle modulazioni della temperatura dell’acqua, della luce del sole che entra zenitalmente all’interno, nei riflessi dell’acqua che colora il bianco totale dei cementi interni. exmodificati e riverberati, in una continua intera-zione con l’acqua e con i fruitori del complesso acquatico. Il meccanismo spaziale è anche una precisa macchina “fotoacustica”, i cui perimetri e confini si modificano in funzione dell’uso che ne viene fatto, del numero dei visitatori presen-ti in un determinato momento e, ovviamente, dello scorrere delle ore dal giorno alla notte. Il colore dominante, il bianco, ottenuto attraverso una finitura delle superfici murarie realizzato in pasta di vetro, analogamente alle pareti del-le vasche, è pensato come un tono neutro sul quale l’acqua, riflessa dai raggi solari che entra-no con angolazioni sempre diverse, negli spazi del complesso, imprime una gamma di colori ampia e pressoché incontrollabile. Più che un colore, il bianco vetrificato funziona come su-perficie riflettente delle forme e dei colori che animano tali spazi. Il colore esplode in un’unica “stanza” scavata all’interno del volume pieno di una delle vasche principali, identificando la zo-na dedicata ai bambini, caratterizzata da piatta-forme gialle, verdi, arancio, collocate a diverse quote e animate da molteplici giochi d’acqua. Analoga attenzione viene riservata alla proget-tazione del suono e delle sue modalità di pro-pagazione all’interno della sequenza di “stanze d’acqua” che caratterizza il progetto. Gran parte dei soffitti sono finiti attraverso un sistema di teli fonoassorbenti che consentono di filtrare i suoni di fondo per lasciare passare i suoni dell’acqua in movimento: dalle cascate artificiali, ai getti a pressione, alle bolle delle vasche ossigenate.

The Docks that arise in the area south of the port city of Le Havre, in Normandy, are the old-est in France. If the city and, especially, this part of its port, have suffered a gradual process of abandonment over the years, this trend is ex-periencing a sharp reversal through a major transformation plan and retraining that provide for the establishment of a new center for enter-tainment, culture and shopping. Once the plan is completed this area will house residences, a large park, a tropical greenhouse, cinemas and shopping malls.The aquatic complex designed by Jean Nouvel opened in July of this year and represents one of the first quality elements of this revitalization of the entire city.The demolition of hangars number 38 and 39, that were aligned along the Quai de la Réunion, has freed up a vast area of land that has allowed the establishment of the new recreational sports complex articulated on a considerable area (about 5,000m2) developed on two main levels.The new aquatic complex includes a heated

Olympic swimming pool with eight lanes, 1.80 meters deep, located outdoors, and an internal-external pool of 286m2, 1.20 meters deep, and a covered play pool of 117m2 equipped with water games and activities for children aged 3 to 8 years, as well as saunas, steam baths and gymnasiums.Seen from outside the building is configured as a massive parallelogram, dug by openings that allow you to intuit the spatial complexity of in-terior environments inhabited by water, while at the same time presenting to users a sort of anthracite-colored metallic carapace, able to react to change hue of the Normandy sky.The entrance located on Quai de la Réunion, in front of the future Center de la Mer, which will be completed in 2011 by Nouvel, is dug into the facade, the first of a series of filter spaces that give concrete form to a progressive passage from exterior to interior, from colors of the port to the total white of the new building, from the sounds of the city to the muffled reverberations of the covered pools.

Each pool has a specific shape and size and fea-tures a different theme. From areas for infants from 0 to 3 years, to areas for children from 3 to 8 years, up to the families area. The complex is divided according to a scheme borrowed from the Roman Baths, where environmental chang-es are detected in the modulation of the temper-ature of the water, and of the sunlight entering inside, and in the reflections of water that colors the total white of the interior cement.Nouvel works mainly with sound and light that changes and reverberates, in a continuous in-teraction with water and with the users of the aquatic complex. The spatial mechanism is a precise ‘photoacoustic’ machine, the perimeters and boundaries changing depending on the use, the number of visitors present in a spcific mo-ment, and, of course, the passing of the daytime and nighttime hours.The dominant white color, obtained through the wall finishing, realized through glass paste,

similar to the walls of the pools, is thought of as a neutral tone on which the water, reflected by sunlight entering from various angles, in the spaces of the complex, provides an almost uncontrollably wide range of colors. More than a color, the vitrified white acts as a reflecting surface for the shapes and colors that animate these spaces. The color explodes in one “room” dug into the full volume of one of the main pools, identifying the area dedicated to children, with yellow, green, and orange platforms placed on different levels and animated by several water games. Similar attention is paid to sound design and its mode of propagation inside the sequence of “water rooms” that characterizes the project. Most of the ceilings are finished through a sys-tem of sound-absorbing curtains that allow you to filter out background sounds, to allow the sounds of the moving water to pass through: from artificial waterfalls, to pressure jets, to oxygen tank bubbles.
