expense to the apple grower. Damage andloss caused by the bugs often amount tothousands of dollars.

The predaceous species are importantnatural agents for controlling the pests thatlive on apple trees. They prey on pests suchas mites, aphids, leafhoppers, caterpillars,and other small arthropods. Without thepredaceous mirids, damage to apple cropswould be considerably greater.

Plant bugs that occur on apple trees areinadequately known and little is known oftheir natural history. In 1978 a study wasinitiated to collect the mirids in appleorchards, to observe their feeding, and studytheir natural history. The aim of this reportis to help research scientists and applegrowers in Quebec to recognize orchardspecies of plant bugs and to provide biologi-cal information necessary to control pestspecies.

Collections were made from unsprayedorchards in Rigaud, Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue,Hemmingford, and Agriculture CanadaResearch Farm at Frelighsburg, Quebec.Collections were made throughout thesummers of 1978-1980 commencing in Mayand concluding in early September. Allspecimens were mounted on points, iden-tified, and deposited in the Lyman Museum,Macdonald College. Illustrations of adultswere made with the aid of a camera lucidaattached to a stereo-binocular microscope.Distributions for North America were takenfrom Carvalho (1957, 1958a, 1958b, 1959)and Kelton (1980b).

This study shows that 32 species ofMiridae representing 17 genera occur onapple trees in southern Quebec. Of thisnumber 22 species are predaceous, 7species are phytophagous, and 3 speciesare predaceous and phytophagous. Thestudy also includes notes about their be-haviour, seasonal occurrence, and lifehistory. Keys to subfamilies, tribes, generaand species are given; 31 adults are illus-trated, brief descriptions of adults, and theirdistribution are also provided.

Collecting MiridaeThere are three methods to collect Miridae

on apple trees: sweeping over branches witha regular sweep net, beating the branchesusing a beating stick and sheet, and search-ing for individual specimens on trunks andbranches.

A sweep net is used on young flexiblebranches but as minds are fragile anddelicate insects, sweeping should be donecarefully. After a few sweeps the mirids areremoved from the net with an aspirator.Leaves, fruit, and other debris picked upin sweeping can damage the bugs if sweep-ing is prolonged. Sweeping should be doneunder dry conditions as moisture in the netruins the specimens.

The beating method is used on thickerbranches. A nylon sheet approximately 1 msquare and supported diagonally by metalrods is held under a branch, which is sharplystruck from above with a stick. Bugs on thebranch are jarred loose and fall on the sheetwhere they are picked off quickly with anaspirator. Most specimens for this studywere collected by the two methods above.

The third method is to search for indi-vidual specimens on trunks and limbs ofapple trees. Plant bugs that live on the barkare well camouflaged and usually hide in thecrevices so are difficult to spot until theymove. When discovered they can be pickedup directly with the aspirator.

Collected specimens are killed promptlyin cyanide. All mirids should be mountedon narrow triangular cardboard points andnot pinned directly. The point tip is bent tofit the angle of the thorax so that the speci-men will be level when mounted. Use theminimum amount of glue on the tip andattach to the right side of the thorax abovethe middle coxa. Miridae should not beplaced in alcohol.

Morphology

Adult Miridae are distinguished fromother bugs collected on apple trees by:four-segmented antennae, four-segmentedrostrum and absence of ocelli. The hemely-tron is typically separated into clavus,corium, embolium, and wing membrane.The abdomen consists of eight normallyexposed segments. Each leg consists ofcoxa, trochanter, femur, tibia and tarsus.Tarsal claws and the structures betweenthem, the parempodia and pulvilli, providereliable characters for separating the sub-families. Figure 1 shows the typical miridstructures and illustrates the structuralterms.

Mirid nymphs, especially in the earlyinstars are small and delicate, and generallylook alike. Last instar nymphs assume the

appearance of adults except that they do nothave the fully developed wings and they donot have the male or female genital struc-tures. Thus, the identity of the nymphs inmost situations depends on their associationwith the adults.

Biology

Most mirids, both predaceous and phyto-phagous, pass the winter in the egg stage.Eggs are laid during summer in tender grow-ing stems of the host plant, and overwinter.They hatch the following spring when thehost plant is sprouting new shoots. Nymphsfeed on new growth by sucking out sap, orprey on other arthropods present on thehost plant. The nymphs pass through fivestages of development, each instar normallyrequiring approximately 5-7 days. On thefifth molt they become adults and continuefeeding. Males die soon after mating, butfemales live longer to oviposit.

Relatively few species of Miridae hiber-nate. Those that do seek shelter in the fallunder bark or litter on the ground. In thespring adults emerge and commence feed-ing on available prey or on tender newshoots. After mating females commence tolay eggs and continue to do so for a prolong-ed time. Eggs incubate for approximately10-14 days, and then nymphs emerge andcommence feeding, passing through fivenymphal stages and develop into adults.Thus, during summer overwintered adults

overlap the new generation adults; however,the latter are in much larger numbers. Bymid-summer overwintered adults graduallydie out and new adults continue to feeduntil hibernation.

The phytophagous Miridae collected onapple trees in Quebec are not restricted toapple alone but are also found on nativetrees that are closely related to apple. Thebugs readily migrate from native trees toapples growing nearby. The predaceousspecies readily disperse from plant to plantand their presence on apple trees indicatesan abundant food supply. Most studies ofmirid predation have been conducted inNova Scotia apple orchards. Gilliatt (1935),Lord (1949, 1956, 1962, 1971), MacPhee &Sanford (1954, 1956, 1961), Sanford (1964),MacLellan (1962, 1963, 1977, 1979), Sanford& Herbert (1966), and Herbert & Sanford(1969) have observed the influence of sprayprograms on seven or eight predatory mirids.However, no effort was made to study whatother plant bugs occur on apple and whythey are there.

Classification

The classification of the Miridae in thisreport is the same as used by Kelton (1980b).The four subfamilies represented in thisreport are Mirinae Hahn, Orthotylinae VanDuzee, Phylinae Douglas & Scott, andDeraeocorinae Douglas & Scott.

Subfamily Mirinae Hahn

This is the largest subfamily in NorthAmerica. Species are distinguished by thelarge and free parempodia diverging at theapices, and by the distinct collar.

This subfamily is represented by the tribeMirini, seven genera, and 14 species. Eightspecies are predaceous, six species arephytophagous. Three species are new pro-vincial records.

Distribution: widespread in USA; Mani-toba, Ontario, Quebec.

Genus Taedia Distant

Elongate, robust species. Eyes large,carina between them absent. Pronotum withblack velvety spot behind each callus.Hemelytra with simple and sericeous pubes-cence. Legs long and slender.

One species was collected.

Taedia pallidula (McAtee)(Fig. 21)

Length 6.3-7.0 mm; width 2.3-2.7 mm.Brown species mottled with yellow (Fig. 21).

Overwinters in the egg stage. Nymphsappear about mid-May and adults aboutmid-June; adults gradually die out by end ofJuly. Phytophagous. Also breeds on haw-thorn, adults readily migrate to nearby appletrees.

Distribution: New York, north centralStates; Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario;now known to occur in Quebec.

Genus Phytocoris Fallen

Elongate, parallel-sided species. Eyeslarge, carina between them absent. Pro-notum impunctate. Pubescence of two types,sericeous and simple. Legs long and slender.

The species in this genus all look alikeand are difficult to identify by external

appearance. Thus males are identified by thedetails of genital claspers and females byassociation with males.

Eight species were collected. They over-winter in the egg stage. Nymphs appearabout mid-June and adults about mid-July.The adults gradually die out by early Sep-tember. All are predaceous.

Nymphs and adults prey on mites andaphids, and other small arthropods.

This species is distinguished by the longand slender first antennal segment, by theoverall dark brown color (Fig. 24), and bythe claspers (Fig. 11). Collected on trunks,usually hiding in the crevices of the bark.

Distribution: Texas, north central andnorthwestern USA; Nova Scotia, Quebec,Ontario.

This species is very similar to husseyiin appearance but is larger and has a longerrostrum. It is also distinguished by theclaspers (Fig. 15).

This species is distinguished by theorange or red head and pronotum.

Adults hibernate under bark or in debrison the ground. Adults emerge in early springand feed on the buds, mate, and oviposit.The nymphs appear about the end of Mayor early June, the new generation adultsabout the end of June or early July. Over-wintered adults gradually die out by theend of July, and new generation adults con-tinue to feed until hibernation. Nymphs andadults feed on leaf buds, leaves and fruit.

This is the most common and mostomnivorous pest known as the tarnishedplant bug. It has been reported to damageall fruit crops, vegetable crops, alfalfa andclover crops, cotton and tobacco crops,and ornamental flower crops.

Distribution: Mexico, widespread in USAand Canada.

This species is commonly known as thepear plant bug.

Nymphs and adults prey on mites, miteeggs, and aphids.

This species is distinguished by the blackcollar and calli, and by the red apical marginof corium.

Distribution: eastern USA; Nova Scotia,Ontario, Prairie Provinces, British Columbia,now known to occur in Quebec.

Robust, dark species. Eyes large, widelyseparated; frons smooth. Pronotum andhemelytra strongly punctate; pubescencesimple, short. Wing membrane with twocells.

Length 3.2-4.0 mm; width 1.4-1.9 mm.Generally light brown marked with black.Calli punctate. Wing membrane mostly clear,spot near outer margin fuscous (Fig. 48).

Adults hibernate. Adults emerge in earlyspring, mate, oviposit, and gradually die outby the end of July. Nymphs appear in earlyMay and new generation adults in early June;adults are active until hibernation. Nymphsand adults prey on mites, aphids, smallcaterpillars, and other small arthropods.

This is the smallest species of Deraeoco-ris encountered. It is distinguished by thepunctate scutellum.

Distribution: widespread in USA; NovaScotia, Qu6bec, Ontario.

Length 5.7-6.6 mm; width 2.8-3.2 mm.Generally grayish marked with black. Calliblack. Scutellum impunctate.

This species is distinguished by thegrayish color of the hemelytra.

Distribution: eastern USA; easternCanada, Prairie Provinces.

Life history similar to that of aphidipha-gus. Nymphs and adults prey on mites,aphids, and small caterpillars.

This is the most abundant species ofDeraeocoris on apple.

Distribution: northeastern and northcentral USA; Nova Scotia, Quebec, Ontario,Prairie Provinces, British Columbia.

Length 5.7-7.0 mm; width 2.6-2.9 mm.Pronotum light brown with black punctures,calli black with black rays behind. Scutellumimpunctate. Wing membrane with largerounded fuscous spot at apex (Fig. 51).

Life history similar to that of aphidipha-gus. Nymphs and adults prey on aphids.

This species is similar to fasciolus in sizeand appearance. It is separated from fascio-lus by the completely black calli and by theblack rays behind them.

Distribution: northeastern USA: NovaScotia, Qu6bec, Ontario.
