“Walk into a dream” is my spa’s mission statement said

Sophia Brodsky the owner of La Reve Spa in Rittenhouse.

On a rainy Tuesday in Rittenhouse Square I was truly transported to a unique and other worldly environment that Sophia and her team have created.

Considering myself to be familiar with the day spa’s in the area I was excited to experience something new as La Reve Rittenhouse Day Spa has only been open 2 years. The day spa is located in the Medical Tower building on 255 South 17th Street, 4th floor in Philadelphia. Upon meeting Sophia, I realized that while it was a new name and location, Sophia and her team are seasoned professionals that moved from her former spa the “Body Klinic” located on Walnut street. That is the true charm of Philadelphia the new and familiar at the same time.

In the spirit of the adventure I brought along a friend, so we could both be able to enjoy an escape from the day to day stress of life. Besides it is always more fun to have a partner in crime so we can truly experience all that the spa had to offer.

Sophia is a free spirit with a passion for what she has created which is reflected in her ambition to be in her own words the “Best in Philly.” She has some tough competition but a successful spa or a business creates something unique and truly reflective of themselves.

La Reve Rittenhouse Day Spa is the true reflection of Sophia’s personality which can be seen in every inch of the decor. Her thick Russian accent, vibrant makeup and appearance have been transferred to the environment she has cultivated for her clients.

We were greeted with a warm smile and heart felt welcome to La Reve and instantly made to feel at home, that is if your home was filled with chakra- realigning lights, a candy room for manis and pedis and velvet chairs and tasseled pillows to recline on while enjoying champagne.

La Reve’s niche and character come from the focus on mind, body and spirit alignment which is the focus of every treatment offered by Sophia and her team. This spa is not designed to be a fast paced service driven space but created to be a spiritual and balancing retreat.

The 7 treatment rooms located in the spa each have a different focus and feeling but despite the unique decor of each room you have a feeling of balance and unity within the spa environment. shower and Himalayan salt bed with solar treatments and Chakra ceiling lights. During my afternoon we experienced 4 of the 7 treatment rooms each with a unique feel but overall sense of peace and relaxation.

I have to admit I happen to be one of those rare spa clients that does not usually get massages and perceive my skin regime as one of maintenance rather than pampering. Upon our arrival I explained to Sophia that I have sensitive skin, easy skin irritations and all of my issues were listened to and address so that I received what worked for my personal health and attention to overall wellness. The spa uses Israeli based products which are “vegan based” meaning without any animal contents. The line they use is called Christina Bio-Phyto and she sells the products so if you fall in love with one you can have easy access to them.

Before beginning my day of “pampering” I was introduced to my masseuse and esthetician Maggie, a lovely woman who assured me that Sophia explained my skin issues and I was not to be concerned. The massage was the first service I received and it was in the couples massage room which was white and spacious with “waterfall accents” on the walls.

Maggie and I spoke prior to my “Swedish deep tissue massage” $55 for 30 minutes and explained what I could expect since I am not a frequent massager receiver.She mentioned that I could adjust the level of pressure as needed during the service but have to honestly say that I was pleasantly surprised with the whole session.

Sophia explained back massages are a necessity for combating the stress of everyday life and essential to “shifting your balance into realignment”. Rather than seeming a guilty indulgence after experiencing the massage I believed she was right. I did feel an opening and releasing of the stress in my back. The 7 Chakras, a theme Sophia continuously emphasizes in our conversation before and after our services, is highlighted in the services and environment of the spa and in her words “our back is the passageway to maintain a healthy Chi”. It all started to make sense why Sophia’s mission statement for the La Reve Rittenhouse Day Spa is “Walking into a Dream.”

The next service I received was by Maggie also and it is called a “French Facelift” ($170 for the service). It is a facial designed to stimulate and give your skin tone a natural lift. It is created to increase radiance and detoxify the skin with the micro current

emitted by the machine and increase collagen production naturally. Being just shy of 50 and leery of any artificial way of looking younger I was excited to see the results. The treatment is filled with the basics of a facial but finished with a massaging of the face and neck with a micro current. The results are noticeable within 24 hours and normally last 3-4 weeks. I feel younger already and am a believer in adding to my facial routine. The smell of the products was heavenly being made of a natural organic flower essence.

After an hour and a half of back to back services I met my friend in the lounge area to see what services he received and prepare ourselves for the next round of treatments. My friend too had a “Swedish deep tissue massage” but a full body rather than just a back massage like myself. ($90 for 60 minutes) He is a true hedonist and I was curious to see what he thought about the experience. His masseuse was Cathy, a woman who Sophia says “speaks through her hands”

He loved the massage and was relaxed and invigorated at the same time, after the treatment he was escorted to the one of a kind “salt room” with Aromatherapy steam shower which prepared him for the custom made “Himalayan salt beds” with a solar treatment for increased energy. ($20 for 15 minutes)

The “salt beds” are the brain child of Sophia and are unique to her day spa. The full treatment includes lying on the table after your massage and being wrapped in a tinfoil layer while gazing up at the ceiling which has a pulsating LED lights in

the 7 colors of the Chakras. It is called “Cromotherapy” and my friend mentioned while skeptical at first the “salt bed” and lights, they were soothing and mesmerizing after being relaxed by the massage. I was excited to try myself as this was my last scheduled mini service for the afternoon.

While my friend relaxed in a velvet rhinestone covered chair and sipped champagne in the reception area, I was whisked away to the “candy room” for my manicure. The candy room has high ceilings that are filled with candy like gems to reflect and enhance the light and energy in the room and a person’s body. Cathy’s attention to my manicure was a delight and no aspect of the service was rushed or overlooked. My nails felt polished, buffed and my palms relaxed by the hand massage.

The true “treat” of the afternoon was letting my nails dry while lying on the Himalayan salt beds custom designed by Sophia and imported from Italy. Rather than the bed of salt being soft, it was firmly packed and quite pleasurable as laying on the firmly packed beach at dusk when the light is fading but colors of the sunset are slipping through.

The pulsating lights are designed to mirror the 7 Chakras and caused me to forget about ruining a nail if they weren’t dry yet and slip into a fuzzy state of relaxation. I will definitely schedule a full session on the salt beds after my massage next time to continue my “California dreaming” while living in Philadelphia therapy.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT US My love and I recently purchased a couple’s spa package at Le Reve on a Sunday evening. We chose the Couple Massage II package and had a massage and a salt scrub which were both magnificent. We would both go back for the treatments alone. But the best part for us was the private suite which included our own bathroom, sauna and steam shower! At every other couples massage we have experienced, we are separated into the women’s and men’s area’s and then meet again once we get on the massage tables……But at Le Reve, you stay together the WHOLE time!
