With ranks rather thinned by the approach of holidays, we sat out with 7 in the party for one of our favourite districts? the

north Clwyd Range. The ascent of Moel Fammau was notable for tho beauty of tho foothills clad in their '·coats of many colours' - patch0s of rich purple hoathor, in full bloom just now, relieving thG many shadas of ~rown bracken a~d green ferns which normally mako up thG pattGrn. Tho summit was roached in swirling mist, and we wero glad to drop dovrn slightly to the elGarer air on the ridge walk to Mo0l Arthur. Rain threatened all aftGrn9on, but all we got was an occasional slight drizzle. During a pause wa wGrG troatod to a vGrsion of the latest style in capes (by Born2rd) - a sort of skin tight wrap which would cause a sensation, evon in Paris J

After 'doing' Moel Arthur 9 the walk back to Pantymwyn via Cilcain enabled us to work up an appetite for t0a. wc-..iined at a n~w T3a Gardon which·wo must add to our catering list. On tho way to tho bus stop wo had thG unusual sight of the Ri v0r Alyn, which as a rule is quitG turbulent, completely dri0d up with thG bare rocky bed exposed after the roe en t drou~ht •

A grand day and a gra a crowd to enjoy it as we wound our way (twenty in numb er) a]. ong a wooded path, through a very pleasant dell

and by way of pleasant lanes to the venue of the ramble. Raby Mera itself looked so ve ry inviting for a Sunday afternoon 1 s boating in the sun, but we heeded not thG sirens and ore ssed on after r efreshments.

· Th3 crunching of grav3l, the swishing of grass, a sou ghin g br0ez0, chattering voicos and distant laughter - green fiGlds under a blue sky, a nea rby old mill 9 tho disitant W0lsh Hills - these are the music and meat of Mother N, tura 1 s su1111er feasting - we were tho honoured guGsts.

As the sun W3.nt dovm in a golden hazll, I felt that this h ad bo ~:m a lovely day and tha t we, as a party, had helped to make a n occ a sion worth ramemberinM.

' \-th AUJ?,1!_~-~~~ .. BJYA.9~ill V~LLEY Why we should havo cljoson this day of

all days for a swimming ramble, is something we will nev~r ba able to

fathom, but in d:t'awing up next year's p:.rogramm0/. ~he Sub-Committee might try consulting tho Motoorological Office fir.st~ It poured all day. After lunch Qt tho Rod Lion, 15 hardy souls struggled as far as Rivacre, took ona look e.t tho wator and d:Jcidod it was just as wot outside the wat3r as in it, so it would have boon a wa sta of time g3 t ting changed, B otter luck noxt time.

Qui to a large proportion of the 17 who took part in this ramble were new membGrs. Some of tho told regulars•

must havo wondered if they were with the right Club wh3n they arrived at the r meG t' ; D.nd potthaps the naw members wond ared if th'3y wer0 on a ramble or a scramble when they set off up OVorton Hill immediat, ely after lGaving the Frodsham bus,· However· we all arrived at tho top very ready for tea after the hot climb. After lunch W3 followed the path along tho edge of the hill, down Jacob's Ladder and along· paths bordered by lwather and bracken, until we noarod Whitby' fl at Birch Hill. Although it was rruch too early for an officinl tea stop, we decided that the weather warranted an axcsption being mado~ so we stopped. As WG intondod returning hero for tea, we arranged to lcav8 ou·r ruck-sacks, 'knitting bags1 etc., so that we would be completely froe to enjoy the cool pine forests of Dolam0ro. Thes3 we saw under ideal conditions and we had a very enjoyable walk along shady ne3dle strewn paths, sometim3S bordered by dark mysterious forests, thGn by · shoulder high bracken, through sunlit clo arings, until oven tu ally we arri vc-d back at Whitby' s ~ hun~ry for our taa.

In fact savGral were so hungry that they su pplomon tGd their taa with poached eggs on toast. Ctrr way back to Frodsham w2,s up Jae.ob ( s Le.dd ar, back along the edge of Overton Hill and down. Thero seem to be many novel ways of coming down hills, some of them morJ effoctiv3 than dignified ~nd as a result we looked a very mucky gang as we stood in the long bus queue at Frodsham. However, it was unanimously agreed that wo had had a very enjoyable day,
