Session 2 - Lesson 1 - fit Focus

Welcome Back & Warm-up Welcome

Welcome the boys to fitClub 4Boys, Session 2.

Gather the boys to the center of the activity space.

Hand out snacks and beverages to each boy to allow them to fuel up for fitClub 4Boys.

Allow time for the boys to eat their snacks.

Take attendance. While taking attendance, hand out a name tag to each boy (optional).

Allow the boys to throw away their scraps from snacks, sanitize their hands if necessary and get ready for the next activity.

Cue for Next Activity: Today’s main topic is RECHARGE. Let’s find out how much we all know about RECHARGE. Get ready for the Brain Race.

Lesson 2 Ready, Set, Go Brain Race

Time 5 Minutes

Activity Purpose This activity introduces:

What RECHARGE is.

Creating an awareness of RECHARGE and its connectivity to MOOD, FOOD, and MOVE.

Objective In this activity, boys will gain further understanding of:

What RECHARGE is.

What role RECHARGE plays in being fit.

RECHARGE gives you energy to be in charge of the choices you make.

Two ways to RECHARGE: 1. Sleep 2. Relax

Materials Needed 5 pieces of blank paper (1 paper for each group of 3-4 participants)

5 pens or pencils (1 for each group)

Session 2 - Lesson 2 - RECHARGE Focus

Ready, Set, Go Brain Race

Introduce the Activity Have the boys sit in a circle and give the boys the directions for the upcoming activity. 1. Explain that this activity will help the boys know what fit is. 2. Give the boys the directions for the upcoming activity.

a. They will be divided into groups. b. Each group of boys will get one piece of paper and one pen

or pencil. c. Each group will pick a leader. d. You will set a timer for 1 minute and then ask a question; the group leader will write down the

group’s answers. e. When the timer is done, the leader will share the group’s answers with everyone.

Do the Activity 1. Divide the boys into teams; the number of participants per team should be equal.

a. Allow a minimum of 3 boys per group. 2. Have the group pick a leader. 3. Give each group one piece of paper and one pen or pencil. 4. Set a timer for 1 minute and ask the following question:

a. What do you think RECHARGE means? 5. Start the timer and tell the boys to begin brainstorming and talking about what they

think RECHARGE means. 6. Once the timer is up:

a. Ask each group (one at a time) to share what they think RECHARGE means. b. Allow for a brief discussion. c. Next, discuss what RECHARGE means relative to the RECHARGE Talk Time!

Talk Time! What is RECHARGE?

RECHARGE is about having the energy to MOVE and think.

RECHARGE gives you energy to motivate your MOOD so you can make fit FOOD and MOVE choices.

There are two ways for you to get your RECHARGE: 1. Sleep to restore your RECHARGE at night. 2. Relax to refresh your RECHARGE during the day; do a quiet, relaxing activity.

The interconnection of RECHARGE and MOOD.

The importance of getting one’s RECHARGE in the day in order to motivate one’s MOOD to make fit choices.

Objective In this activity boys will gain an understanding of:

The connection between RECHARGE and MOOD relevant to making fit choices.

RECHARGE gives you energy to motivate your MOOD.

Materials Needed 1 Balloon for each boy (blown up prior to session)

Permanent markers (groups of 2 can share 1 marker)

Session 2 - Lesson 3 - MOOD & RECHARGE Focus

Floating Balloons

Introduce the Activity Have the boys continue to jog in place as you explain the activity. 1. Explain that this activity will help the boys learn more about MOOD and how MOOD impacts the

choices you make. 2. Give the boys the directions for the upcoming activity.

a. Each boy will get a balloon and each boy will choose a MOOD Leader Card. b. Each boy will get a marker to write the feeling on his MOOD Leader Card on the balloon. c. After boys finish writing the feeling on the balloon, the markers and MOOD Leader Cards are

returned to the fitClub leader. d. You will set a timer and yell, “Go!” e. Everyone will throw their balloon in the air and

the group will try to keep all the balloons in the air.

f. When time is up, you will yell, “Grab a MOOD balloon!” and each boy will grab the balloon closest to him.

g. After catching the MOOD balloons, the boys will form a circle and start walking in place.

3. Using the MOOD Leader Cards you will pick a feeling and ask the boy who has the balloon matching the feeling some questions such as the examples below: a. Example: MOOD = Bored

When you are tired is it easier to get bored?

When you are bored do you feel like getting up and moving?

b. Example: MOOD = Anxious

When you are tired how easy is it for you to calm yourself down when you are anxious?

When you are anxious do you sometimes look for sweet snacks to eat?

Session 2 - Lesson 3 - MOOD & RECHARGE Focus

Do the Activity 1. Give each boy a balloon. 2. Have the boys draw a MOOD Leader Card and write the feeling on the Leader Card

on the balloon. 3. The boys give their marker and MOOD Leader Card to the fitClub leader. 4. Set a timer for 1 minute and Yell “Go!” 5. When time is up, yell “Grab a MOOD balloon!” 6. Have the boys form a circle while holding onto the balloon they caught.

a. Option: Challenge the boys to stand on one foot while holding the balloon. 7. Pick a feeling on a MOOD Leader Card and ask the boy who has the balloon matching

the feeling some questions such as the examples below: a. Example: MOOD = Bored

When you are tired is it easier to get bored?

When you are bored do you feel like getting up and moving? b. Example: MOOD = Anxious

When you are tired how easy is it for you to calm yourself down when you are anxious?

When you are anxious do you sometimes look for sweet snacks to eat? 8. Repeat steps 4 – 7 until allotted time for the activity is up. 9. Boys return their balloons to the fitClub leader.

Cue for Next Activity: Now that we learned about how RECHARGE affects our MOOD and our choices, let’s choose to MOVE. Get in a circle and complete 10 arm circles to get ready to learn about our next activity.

Lesson 4 Leap Frog Moves

Time 5 Minutes

Activity Purpose This activity introduces:

The interconnection of RECHARGE and MOVE.

The importance of getting one’s RECHARGE in order to have the energy to have a desire to MOVE in one’s day.

Objectives In this activity boys will gain an understanding of:

The impact RECHARGE has on your desire to MOVE.

RECHARGE gives you energy to MOVE.

Materials Needed CD player or other technology to play music (optional)

o Fun, energetic music (optional)

Prepare the Activity Have boys stand in a circle and walk in place while they wait for the activity to be set up.

Set up 4 lines using 3 cones for each line. o Spread the 3 cones out to allow

enough space for the boys to do the activity.

o If the cones are too tall for the boys to leap over, turn the cones on their side.

Place the MOVE Leader Cards in a pile at the end of the cones. Scatter the MOVE Leader Cards around to mix up the Leader Cards.

Session 2 - Lesson 4 - RECHARGE & MOVE Focus

Leap Frog Moves

Introduce the Activity Have boys continue to stand in a circle and march in place. 1. Explain that this activity will help the boys learn about how

RECHARGE gives you energy to MOVE and fun ways to MOVE. 2. Give the boys the directions for the upcoming activity.

a. This activity is played as a relay. b. You will split the boys up into 4 lines; one line of boys for each line of cones. c. The goal of this activity is for each boy to leap over the cones in his line to grab a Leader Card

to lead his group in the fit MOVE on the Leader Card.

Each boy will hop like a frog over each cone to grab a MOVE Leader Card and hop back to the start line. o While the boys are waiting in line, they will march in place and cheer on their team.

Once back to the start line, he will lead the boys in doing the movement on the Leader Card for as many times as indicated on the Leader Card. o If he has a MOVE Leader Card with seconds on it, he will count out loud to the number

on the Leader Card.

Once the group has completed the movement, the boy leading the group will: o Slap the hand of the next boy in line to hop to get his MOVE Leader Card. o Keep his MOVE Leader Card and return to the back of the group’s line.

3. The activity continues with the next boy in line leaping over the cones to get a MOVE Leader Card to lead his group in doing the movement on the Leader Card.

4. Once each boy has had a chance to lead his group in moving, the entire team will sit. a. First team to have all boys seated wins. b. Continue playing until all teams are seated.

5. After all teams are seated, you will lead all of the boys in yelling out: “RECHARGE gives you energy to MOVE!”

6. If time allows, repeat activity. 7. When activity is finished, the boys will return MOVE Leader Cards to the fitClub 4Boys instructor.

Session 2 - Lesson 4 - RECHARGE & MOVE Focus

Do the Activity 1. Split the boys up into 4 groups and have each group form a line behind each line of

cones. 2. Have the boys march in place while waiting in line for their turn. 3. You will yell, “GO!”

a. The boy at the front of each line begins hoping like a frog over the cones to get a MOVE Leader Card.

b. The boy will hop back to the start line with his Leader Card and lead his group in doing the movement on the Leader Card for the number of times indicated on the Leader Card.

c. Once the group has completed the movement, the boy leading the group will:

Slap the hand of the next boy in line to hop and get a MOVE Leader Card.

Return to the back of the group’s line. 4. Once each boy in a line has had a chance to lead his group, the team sits.

a. First team to sit down wins. 5. Continue playing until all teams are seated. 6. After teams are seated, you will lead the boys in yelling: “RECHARGE gives you energy

to MOVE!” 7. If time allows, repeat the activity. 8. When the game is finished, boys will return MOVE Leader Cards to the instructor. 9. Ask the boys to walk in place for the Wrap it Up! Message.

Wrap it Up! Message Check if you know fit

1. ASK: What is your favorite way to RECHARGE in your day?

2. ANSWER: Any relaxation activity is a correct answer.

Remember to be fit

Get your RECHARGE to have energy to MOVE your body.

Be fit

Restore your RECHARGE. Get 10-11 hours of sleep every night.

Cue for Next Activity: RECHARGE and moving give us energy, but so does FOOD. Let’s learn about FOOD. Get in a circle, complete 5 Overhead Reaches (slow and controlled) to get ready to learn about our next activity.

Lesson 5 FOOD in the Cupboard

Time 10 Minutes

Activity Purpose 1. This activity introduces:

The interconnection of RECHARGE and FOOD choices.

The importance of getting one’s RECHARGE in order to motivate one’s MOOD in order to make fit FOOD choices.

This activity reinforces:

The stoplight tool as a tool to use when making FOOD choices.

Objectives In this activity boys will gain an understanding of:

The impact RECHARGE has on your FOOD choices.

RECHARGE gives you energy to manage and motivate your MOOD so you can make healthy FOOD choices.

In this activity boys will gain further understanding of:

How to use the stoplight tool when making FOOD choices.

Materials Needed FOOD Leader Cards

Cone or other ‘object’

Mesh jerseys or other identifier for healthy FOOD boys

Prepare the Activity From the FOOD Leader Cards, pick 3

green light Leader Cards (healthy snack choices) and use red light Leader Cards (unhealthy snack choices) for the remaining number of boys in your fitClub to create the deck of Leader Cards for this activity.

Prepare a space for the boys to form two horizontal lines facing each other. The unhealthy food boys are at one end of the activity space and healthy food boys (3) at opposite end of activity space with their backs to a cone or other object.

Session 2 - Lesson 5 - RECHARGE & FOOD Focus

FOOD in the Cupboard

Introduce the Activity Have boys continue to stand in a circle and do high knee marches. Place a cone or other object at one end of the activity space (the “cupboard”). 1. Explain that this activity is a game about unhealthy foods

trying to get into the healthy foods cupboard. 2. This game is a version of tag. The goal of the game:

a. The healthy foods are to keep the unhealthy foods from getting inside the “cupboard” and getting the object you have placed at one end of the activity space.

3. Everyone will pick a Leader Card to determine who is going to play as a healthy or unhealthy food at the beginning of this game. a. Boys who draw a green light FOOD Leader Card are a

healthy FOOD and will try to keep the unhealthy foods out of the cupboard, protecting the object in the cupboard.

These boys will get a mesh jersey or alternative identifier (i.e. tape on their wrist or upper arm). b. Boys who draw a red light FOOD Leader Card are an unhealthy food and will try to get into the

cupboard to capture the object without being tagged. 4. At one end of the activity space, the unhealthy FOOD Leader Card boys create a horizontal line at the

starting line, facing the object you have placed at the other end of activity space. 5. The healthy FOOD Leader Card boys will stand in a horizontal line with their backs toward the object to

protect the object from being captured. a. Note: Healthy food boys must stand an arms distance away from each other and cannot form a tight

circle or barrier around the object to protect it. 6. Explain that when you yell, “Food in the Cupboard!” the boys will do the following:

a. The unhealthy food boys will run towards the healthy foods’ cupboard (the healthy food boys protecting the object) in an attempt to capture the object.

b. The healthy food boys will try and tag the unhealthy food boys. c. When you are tagged you stop and march in place until the object is captured or leader yells “Stop!”.

7. If the object is captured: a. The unhealthy food boys that were not tagged will form a line again at the starting line. b. The object is put back at end of activity space behind the healthy food boys. c. The boys that were tagged will join the team of healthy food boys to keep the unhealthy food boys

from getting into the cupboard and grabbing the object.

The tagged boys will get a mesh jersey or alternative identifier like the other healthy food boys. 8. If the object is not captured:

a. After 15-20 seconds, you will yell “Stop!” b. The boys that were tagged will join the healthy food boys’ team to keep the unhealthy food boys from

getting into the cupboard and grabbing the object. c. The boys that were not tagged will form a line again at the starting line and the game will start over.

Talk Time! Ask boys to stand in a circle and do high knee marches while reviewing the fit lesson points.

RECHARGE gives you energy to think about your FOOD choices and make a healthy choice, a fit choice.

fit FOOD choices give you energy to MOVE and think.

When you have healthy foods in your cupboards, it is easier to make a fit FOOD choice.

Session 2 - Lesson 5 - RECHARGE & FOOD Focus

Do the Activity 1. Have the boys draw a FOOD Leader Card. 2. Have the healthy food (green FOOD Leader Cards) boys form a line (standing at

least an arms distance away from one another) at one end of the activity space and the unhealthy food boys (red FOOD Leader Cards) will form a horizontal line at the opposite end of the activity space. a. Have boys who are healthy foods put on a mesh jersey or alternative identifier

(i.e. tape). 3. Yell, “Food in the Cupboard!” 4. The unhealthy food (red FOOD Leader Cards) boys try to capture the object behind

the healthy food boys. a. The healthy food boys will try and tag the unhealthy food boys. b. If an unhealthy food boy is tagged, he will stop and march in place until the object

is captured or leader yells, “Stop!” 5. If the object is captured and time allows, repeat steps 2-4.

a. Have the tagged boys become part of the cupboard line of healthy food boys. 6. If the object is not captured after 15-20 seconds, yell “Stop!” and repeat steps 2-4. 7. Repeat the activity up to 10 minutes or until all of the unhealthy food boys are

tagged.

Your Body and Brain Time 5 Minutes

Activity Purpose This activity reinforces:

What RECHARGE is.

Sleep and relaxation as ways to RECHARGE.

Objectives In this activity boys will gain further understanding of:

RECHARGE being about getting energy for your body and mind.

Just like a battery, to have energy you need to RECHARGE.

Two ways you can RECHARGE: 1. Sleep to restore your RECHARGE at night. 2. Relax to refresh your RECHARGE during the day; do a quiet, relaxing activity.

Materials Needed CD player or other technology to play music (optional)

Session 2 - Lesson 6 - RECHARGE Focus

Cool-down to RECHARGE Your Body and Brain Introduce the Activity Ask the boys to sit in a large circle and provide an arm length between each other to allow enough room for stretching. 1. Explain that this activity will help the boys learn about the importance of a cool-down to

RECHARGE their body and brain. 2. Give the boys the directions for the upcoming activity.

a. You will stand in the center of the circle and tell the boys:

They are going to do some breathing and stretching to RECHARGE their energy.

Three boys will draw a RECHARGE Leader Card.

After the Leader Cards are drawn, you will lead the boys in doing each movement shown on the RECHARGE Leader Card.

b. Ask the boys to continue doing the three RECHARGE movements at their own pace while you review the Talk Time! lesson points.

Do the Activity 1. Have the boys close their eyes and take 3 deep breaths.

a. This will allow them to calm down after the previous activity and concentrate on the RECHARGE activity.

2. Choose three participants and have each draw one RECHARGE Leader Card. 3. Demonstrate how to do the movement on each Leader Card. 4. The boys do the three RECHARGE movements as they desire while you, the leader,

review the Talk Time! lesson points. 5. If time allows, this would be a great opportunity to also read the RECHARGE fit tips

on the Leader Cards and use the Leader Prompt to explain the reason the fit tip matters.

Activity Purpose This activity provides a time to recap the main fit

messages introduced during fitClub 4Boys and to challenge the boys to make one fit choice throughout the next week.

This activity will also allow the leader to gain an awareness of what the boys have learned in fitClub 4Boys during this session with the use of the My fit Thoughts worksheet.

This activity reinforces: o Challenging the boys to make a fit choice every day in the coming week. o The fit-Huddle.

Objectives In this activity, boys will gain further understanding of:

1. Thank the boys for doing a great job at fitClub today. 2. Hand out a pen or pencil to each participant. 3. Tell the boys you want to know their thoughts about fitClub today. 4. You will be giving them a My fit Thoughts paper to fill out and return to you. 5. You will read the questions and they can write their answers. 6. Hand out the My fit Thoughts for each boy to complete.

a. Read the questions to the boys:

What fit piece did you like learning about today? o Participants will circle their answer (RECHARGE,

MOOD, FOOD or MOVE)

Write down one thing you learned about the fit piece you circled in question #1.

Write down one fit thing you plan on doing this week.

fit Challenge – fit Challenge Tracker 1. After the boys turn in their “My fit Thoughts” paper, have

the boys draw a fit Challenge Card from the deck of fit Challenge Cards.

2. Explain to the boys that the fit Challenge Card is meant to be taken home and used throughout the week to challenge them to make a fit choice every day.

3. Show the boys where the fit challenge is on the card. 4. If they do the fit challenge on the card during the day,

they can mark the day’s box with an X. 5. Tell the boys to keep their fit Challenge Card in a place where they will see it each day. This

will help remind them to do their challenge.

Handout 1. One fit Challenge Card for each boy from the deck provided. 2. Deck of fitClub 4Boys RECHARGE Take Home fitCards

a. Give each boy a set of the RECHARGE Take Home fitCards. b. Explain that these cards have a photo to suggest a RECHARGE action
