Art Valet By Mitch CohenArts Columnist

This week I was invited to talk about my art show, First Saturday Arts Market, and how I got it started. I’ve done this before and was confident that I could pull it off again. But this group was com-posed of a local Girl Scout Troop of 8 and 9 year olds, and they were to earn their painting badge from my talk. I thought, maybe I should condense my spiel and make it more fun and artsy.

Enter April Murphy, a real bona fide artist and good friend. Murphy has been a regular attendee of my mar-ket since restarting her career in art about 6 years ago. She is the featured artist at Bayou City Art Festival in a couple of weeks for their 45th Anni-versary, an incredible honor. Memorial Park April 29-May 1, 2016 by the way, and be there. Tickets are available online at bayoucityartfesti-val.com.

I talked and explained that professional artists were adults (mostly) that just nev-

er gave up creating. Murphy introduced an exercise to help the girls think creatively, each got to choose a sheet of paper that had a random shape on it, and using col-ored markers, draw what-ever they saw in the shape. You know what? They just jumped right in. I know my contemporaries would hem and haw about what to do.

While the girls were creat-ing; everything from an aban-doned purse in a park (based on a true story) to the Star Wars robot character BB-8, Murphy and I answered their questions.

I had no expectations about what kind of questions they would ask, but they were no different than any adult would ask.

Why did you choose to be an artist? When do you work? Did you guys go to art school? How long have you been selling your art? They are on top of their game!

We had a lot of fun, and the girls’ enthusiasm, par-

ticipation and curiosity was enlightening, and all earned their painting badge. I was reminded of a quote often credited to Pablo Picasso, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.”

Thanks to Troop 25152 leaders Michelle Galindo, Cheryl Hensley and Adriana Sada Alaniz for the invita-tion.

Saturday the Downtown District is going to give Hous-tonians the chance to reach their inner artistic child and to buy art with Art Blocks: The Big Bash on Main Street Square, 900-1100 Blocks of Main St, Houston, Texas 77002 noon - 6 p.m.

Art Blocks is a new public art initiative to enliven Main Street Square, and the Big Bash kicks off the year long project. Events Saturday in-clude Paint By Numbers, a life-size artwork created by Anthony Thompson Shumate and presented by Pinot’s Pal-ette which requires on-site

audience participation. The requisite food trucks

and music performances will be there as well as the Heart-made Art Market featuring a veritable who’s who of Hous-ton artists including Teresa O’Connor, Lisa Chow, Janet Roe, Paule Hewlett and Tra Slaughter. This is an amazing project that will include a se-ries of temporary art instal-lations. Find out more on the website artblockshouston.org.

This Saturday is ArtWalk Galveston too. The Galveston Art Center has been putting this event on every 6 weeks for 25 years, and it’s always worth the short drive. Details at galvestonartscenter.org. My favorite starting point? Affaire d’Art 2227 Postoffice.

Cohen is the founder and manager of First Saturday Arts Market. Contact him and get more info about the market at ArtValet.com.

Organizers with the sec-ond annual Run the Grove 5k in Timbergrove Manor have heard the suggestions of last year’s attendees and say this year’s event will feature more activities for children, includ-ing a new kids run.

The event is currently scheduled for Saturday April 23, beginning and ending at West 11th Street Park, located at 2400 W. 11th St. The aim of the run is to support the revilatization in areas around Timbergrove, including the Adopt an Esplanade cam-paign and supporting preser-vation initaitives at West 11th

Street Park, Timbergrove Manor Neighborhood Associ-ation representative Suzanne Driskill said.

Registration and warm-up begins at 7 a.m. and the 5k run begins at 8 a.m. The Grove Spring Fling and Silent Auction will start half-an-hour later at 8:30 a.m. with the kids run beginning shortly after at 9 a.m., Driskill said.

“We’ll be focusing a lot on families and kids this year,” Driskill said. “We’re going to have activities like face paint-ing, bubbles, balloons and a few other things kids can en-joy.”

According to a previous Leader article, last year’s event raised funds which later

funded two neighborhood projects – improvements to the esplanade on West 11th Street and repairs to the trails at West 11th Street Park. Driskill said the last part of the esplanade improvements was completed just after Thanksgiving weekend last year. The project included numerous improvements to the area, including “tree trim-

ming, weed removal, mulch/compost application, and a freshening of the area around all three” of the Timbergrove signs. The project was com-pleted by Benedict’s Garden Landscaping.

This year’s presenting sponsor is local realtor Allen Frieze, Driskill said.

“We want people to come out and register for the race and have fun at the Spring Fling afterwards,” Driskill said.

Memorial Hermann Greater Heights

For The Leader

The Breast Center at Me-morial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital has been granted full re-accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program admin-istered by the American Col-lege of Surgeons. Accredita-tion by the NAPBC is only given to those centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance.

The accreditation was granted to the Breast Cen-ter at Memorial Hermann

Greater Heights for three years. Earning the recognition required the Breast Center to demonstrate compliance with standards established by the NAPBC for treating patients who are diagnosed with the full spectrum of breast dis-ease. This is the Center’s sec-ond such achievement.

“Accreditation by NAPBC demonstrates the strength of our program and illus-trates the scope and caliber of breast care services we provide to patients close to home,” said Dr. T. F. Tenczyn-ski, M.D., C.T.R. and Chair of the Breast Program at Memo-rial Hermann Greater Heights. “We want our patients and their families to feel confident that when they walk into our center, they will be receiving

the highest quality care and service.”

The standards include pro-ficiency in the areas of: center leadership, clinical manage-ment, research, community outreach, professional edu-cation, and quality improve-ment. A breast center that achieves NAPBC accredi-tation has demonstrated a firm commitment to offer its patients every significant ad-vantage in their battle against breast disease.

The NAPBC is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to the improve-ment of the quality of care and monitoring of outcomes of patients with diseases of the breast. This mission is pursued through standard-set-ting, scientific validation, and

patient and professional edu-cation. Its board membership includes professionals from 20 national organizations that reflect the full spectrum of breast care.

Receiving care at a NAPBC-accredited center ensures that a patient will have access to:

• Comprehensive care, in-cluding a full range of state-of-the-art services

• A multidisciplinary team approach to coordinate the best treatment options

• Information about ongo-ing clinical trials and new treatment options

•Quality breast care close to home.

Memorial Hermann Greater Heights

For The Leader

World-class neurological expertise and treatment will now be closer to home with the opening recently of the Mischer Neuroscience Asso-ciates-Greater Heights out-patient clinic on the Memo-rial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital campus.

Patients affected by brain- and spine-related disorders can drive to the Mischer Neuroscience Associates-Greater Heights outpatient clinic instead of the Texas

Medical Center. Mischer Neu-roscience Associates (MNA)-Greater Heights is designed specifically for patients who are continuing treatment for neurological issues, including movement and sleep disor-ders, epilepsy, back pain, and other complex spine and cra-nial conditions.

“Patients in the Greater Heights area now have con-venient access to exceptional neurological care,” said Reza Sadeghi, M.D., M.Sc., a neu-rologist and clinical neuro-physiologist affiliated with MNA, Mischer Neuroscience Institute (MNI) and the Stroke

Medical Director at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights.

The MNA network of 16 outpatient clinics in the greater Houston area is an extension of MNI, a collaborative effort between Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and McGovern Medical School at UTHealth. MNI is the larg-est neuroscience provider in South Texas and one of only a few institutions in the country to provide all aspects of neu-roscience care, which includes neurology, neurosurgery and neurorehabilitation.

“MNA-Greater Heights is ideal for treating most condi-

tions of the brain, spine and central nervous system,” Dr. Sadeghi said. “If a higher level of neurological care is needed, we have immediate access to MNI at Texas Medi-cal Center, with its capabili-ties and nationally recognized physicians.”

For more information about Memorial Hermann Greater Heights neuroscience servic-es and MNA-Greater Heights, call (713) 867-2590, visit me-morialhermann.org/heights , or visit at 1635 North Loop West, Houston, TX 77008 on the 610 service road just be-fore Ella Blvd.

By Kim HogstromFor The Leader

On Thursday, March 31, the Houston Heights Wom-an’s Club held one of its most popular events, the annual Founder’s Day, and this one may have been the best yet. The 105-year-old club dedi-cated Founder’s Day to the club’s storied and important history, while reaching out to the future, and the objectives were met this year - and then some.

Each Founders Day, the HHWC identifies a female law school student at South Texas College of Law and awards her a $1,000 scholarship. The mission is to choose a recipi-ent who is a leader in public service and committed to so-cial causes and is awarded in memory of the club’s found-er, Heights resident Hortense Sparks Ward. This year’s recipient was Marie Rivera-Diaz, a remarkable young law student working to improve the futures of all.

Founder Hotense Ward was a fierce advocate of woman’s rights and wrote the charter for the HHWC a century ago. While in her twenties, the mother of three worked as a bookkeeper in a cigar factory while attending court report-ing school at night, then stud-ied law itself. Ward advanced quickly, and soon became one of the first woman to pass the Texas State Bar exam, the first woman to be admitted to the Texas State Bar, and the only woman to serve as Chief Justice of the Texas Supreme Court.

“Notably, Hortense never appeared in a jury trial,” said historian and HHWC mem-ber, Anne Sloan. “Despite her extensive qualifications, it was felt at the time that wom-en lawyers would prejudice a defendant’s peers against the defendant, so she never appeared before a jury. In-credulously, nor did she ever appear in court without wear-ing a hat and gloves.”

With a lifelong passion for advancing woman’s rights and status, Ward led the Tex-as campaign in supporting the Federal Woman’s Suffrage

Amendment. She was also the first woman in Harris County to register to vote, and the first in line to actually cast one. “Since it’s an election year, the club’s Founders’ Day Commit-tee chose to celebrate the suf-fragist movement,” said Leah Braden, HHWC Founder’s Day Committee Chairwoman. “Women achieved the right to vote in 1920, after a long struggle waged by women across the country. This year, we placed pictures on the Tribute Table of Texas suf-fragists. These women knew that, not only would females benefit as they gained a voice at the ballot box, but that their voices would bring progress and enlightenment to the en-tire country.”

The HHWC Board also presented club members Re-becca Hall and Bonnie Hall with lifetime memberships in honor of the work they’ve done supporting Founders Day. The two women are the maternal great granddaugh-ters of Ward, and her spirit clearly lives on in them.

In keeping with the theme, the speaker at Founder’s Day was the Honorable Alexan-dra Smoots-Hogan of the 164th Civil Court in Harris

County. The Judge proved to be an engaging speaker, sharing her personal history, why she decided to run, and how she is working to make a difference in the lives of our children. As a thank-you gift for her generous time, club member Sameera Mahendru presented the Judge with a copy of a book written by HHWC member, Betty Trapp Chapman, titled “Rough Road to Justice: The Journey of Women Lawyers in Texas.” “This year’s Founder’s Day included about 70 people, and it was simply wonderful,”

Braden said. “We had a seated dinner in the clubhouse and some of our wonderful spon-sors including Shade, Ruggles Green, Down House, Krafts-men Baking and Happy Fatz. We are so grateful to them. However, mostly we are proud of the club’s history, and invite all women in the community to become a part of our future.”

high school baseball, softball teams have high hopes as playoff push begins in coming weeks

By Jonathan [email protected]

As many spring sports, like tennis and track, are winding down, baseball and softball are in full swing. While some area schools’ baseball and softball teams are a lock for the play-offs, others will look to make a push.

To help keep track of which teams are playing and fight-ing for a playoff spot, here is the schedule for each school’s teams for the week of April 16 to April 22. John h. reagan Bulldogs

The softball team will look to get the week started for the Bulldogs when they host Houston High School at 6 p.m. April 19. In their last game of the season, the lady Bulldogs play at home against Chavez High School at 4 p.m. April 22. Both games will be played at Delmar Field.

In between softball games, the Reagan baseball team will also play at Delmar as they host Chavez at 4:30 p.m. April 20.

The baseball team will play two more games the following week before their regular sea-son finishes. Lutheran high North Lions

The Lions’ baseball team is 2-5 in district this season and will look to add to their win column when they travel to take on Logos Preparatory Academy at 4:30 p.m. April 19. After, the Lions are at home as they face off against Bay Area

Christian School at 5:30 p.m. April 22.

The Lions will compete in two more games the week after as they try to position themselves for a better playoff seed.

The LHN softball team will also stay at home to take on Houston Christian School in a non-district game at 5 p.m. April 21. The next day, the Lady Lions will get back into district play as they square off against Bay Area Christian at 5 p.m. scarborough spartans

The Spartans softball team competes in their final game of the season when they take on Sterling High School at 6 p.m. April 19. The game will be played at Barnett Stadium.

The Scarborough baseball team plays two games this week as they look to remain in the hunt for the playoffs.

The first game is at Cowart Field versus Wheatley High School at 4:30 p.m. April 20. In their first meeting of the season, the Spartans handed Wheatley a 17-7 loss.

They will then travel to Del-mar Field to take on Kashmere High School at 7 p.m. April 22. When they met previously on March 22, Scarborough held Kashmere to zero runs, as they went on to win 15-0.

The Spartans baseball team will have one more district game before they hope to ad-vance to the playoffs. st. pius X panthers

The Panthers softball team will look to avenge its first

district loss when they travel to Monsignor Kelly Catholic High School at 6 p.m. April 19. The Panthers dropped the first game 5-4 to Monsignor and are tied for second in district. A win by St. Pius could prove to be beneficial in a tiebreaker scenario for playoff seeding.

On April 21, SPX softball will take on host Concordia Lutheran High School at 6 p.m. The Panthers won the first meeting against Concor-dia 11-1.

The softball team will play two more district games before their regular season comes to a close.

The Panthers baseball team will also play two games this week as they play a home-and-away series against Con-cordia. In the first game, they will travel to Concordia to play at 7 p.m. April 19. Then, they will host Concordia at 7 p.m. April 21. In the first meeting between the teams, SPX won 5-3.

The SPX varsity boys’ la-crosse team will also be com-peting in their final game of the season on April 22. They will take on Westside High School at 7 p.m.st. Thomas eagles

The Eagles are the busiest school this week as they have three different teams compet-ing.

STHS also sent two tennis doubles teams to the state tournament on April 11. Paul Simon and Noah Penny faced off against a team from Argyle Liberty Christian School, and

Daniel Kellems and Alejandro Solorzano competed against a duo from El Paso Cathedral High School.

The lacrosse team gets the week started for the Eagles as they face Westside in their last game of the season on April 18.

The varsity rugby team also plays their last game of the season at home versus Lamar High School at 7 p.m. April 22. During the game, the seniors on the team will be honored.

The Eagles’ baseball team will look to protect their first-place lead in district as they have a home-and-away series against Monsignor. In the first game, they will play at home at 7 p.m. April 19. Two days later, they travel to Beaumont to take on Monsignor, also at 7 p.m. The Eagles will play three more games before playoffs start. Waltrip rams

The Rams baseball team is the only squad competing this week and will look to stay in the fight for playoffs. Their first game of the week is at Del-mar Field against Austin High School at 4:30 p.m. April 19. In their first meeting, the Rams beat Austin 10-1 on March 14.

The Rams will then travel to Cowart Field to take on North Forest High School at 4:30 p.m. April 22.

The Rams will play in two district games against Sharp-stown High School and Davis High School before wrapping up their season.
