2018 Safety Day – Leader’s Guide

Background:

2018 marks 11 years of Safety Day. The objective is to bring all employees and contractors together

to engage and focus on improving our safety culture. It should not be viewed as an isolated event,

but it is a significant opportunity to reflect on our journey to build a stronger safety culture in

pursuit of “Goal Zero” – no harm to people and the environment. We want to encourage teams to

think about the steps we can all individually and collectively take to achieve “Goal Zero”.

Theme/Objective: A fundamental pillar in achieving and sustaining a world class safety

performance is ‘Leadership’. Our focus this year will revolve around the importance of having the

right safety leadership attributes.

It is essential for all of us to understand our roles as safety leaders, what do we mean by leadership

and how could demonstration of true leadership attributes help in creating a strong safety culture

for us to achieve no harm to people and the environment, which is our Goal Zero journey.

Please attend the Safety Day session and actively participate in the discussions.

Please take time out to discuss:

· What is leadership How important it is to our Goal Zero journey, and

· How can you improve safety leadership for yourself and team.

Your role as a Line Leader: Before the Safety Day, put Wednesday, 21st February in your diary and plan time to

prepare. Use existing meetings and engagement opportunities to set and reinforce

expectations and demonstrate your personal commitment as the Safety Day approaches

(and beyond). Note safety day can be run anytime from 21dt Feb for a one month period.

If appropriate for your role, engage with your contractor partners to collaborate on how

to maximise the effectiveness of the Safety Day.

Select event leaders who have the facilitation skills to inspire and engage others.

The leader of a team can take on the role of Safety Day event leader, but he or she can

also opt to nominate someone in the team as event leader as a development opportunity.

2018 Safety Day – Leader’s Guide

Our Safety Day provides a great chance for all to demonstrate effective and visible safety

leadership

On the Safety Day itself, identify key messages for your team and open the engagement

session by providing the local business context for the Safety Day topic. Connect the

engagement to local risks and your activities to manage them, setting your expectations

for the event and beyond.

Consider how the success of your Safety Day engagement session will be measured.

Your role as an Event Leader: Tailor the material to your audience with local examples.

Practice your engagement session so you are at your best; asking for feedback from

others can help!

On the Safety Day, use the ‘MD Message’ and ‘Safety Day’ films as well as your own and

audience’s stories to inspire and encourage employees and contractors to understand

what it takes to achieve ‘Goal Zero’.

Facilitate a team event which enables everyone to convert the learnings from the day into

reality.

The Safety Day session is designed for 90 minutes although you may exceed that time

depending on your group size and discussions.

Following the session, record the agreed actions for the group online from the SAFTEY

DAY PAGE.

Request participants to fill in the online survey, which can be accessed from the

SAFTEY DAY PAGE.

Using the case study for discussion:

There are a total of 2 case studies, each case (link available in the safety day slides) for each slide there are a set of discussion questions. Use the questions to start discussion between the teams and share experiences.

Remember to divide the audience into groups before going through the case study. Remind the audience to fill up the survey from the SAFTEY DAY PAGE.

Materials needed:

Flip charts & markers.

Tables and Chairs.

PC, Project & Speakers
