Corrosion Prevention - Exposed Steelwork
Jacking Up With Denso Steelcoat 700 System
Having found that previous coatings were only giving 12 monthsprotection for its De Long jack-up barge, Titan Marine (UK) ofNewhaven, Sussex, has switched to the Denso S.T. Epoxy Steelcoatsystem following extensive trials.
The jack-up barge or platformcan be compared to a barge thatclimbs up its legs to provide ageneral working platform withaccommodation and engineroom for the compressor andgenerators below. It has a 1500tonnes lift capacity. The threelegs are 30m in length but canbe extended so that the jack-upbarge can work in up to 50mwater depths on a hard bottom. The barge is 26m by 26m, witha moulded depth of 3.5m, witha wide slot penetrating 15m infrom her stern, making her athree sided U-shape. Known asthe ‘Katja’ she was purpose builtat Le Havre in 1978 for EDF, theFrench electricity generatingcompany.
Typical of some of its uses inUK waters are pile driving, jettyrepairs, lifting buoys andproviding a floating stage for aproduction of Shakespeare’s play,The Tempest. The latter wasbetween the piers at Brightonand incorporated a fireworkdisplay from the ‘Katja’.
Titan Marine Industries Inc.the American parent company, also owns two other jack-upbarges, currently working inVenezuela and Brazil.
Denso S.T. Epoxy has beenapplied to all surfaces of the‘Katja’ except the legs whichneeded to retain a rough surfacefor the jacks to grip on. It is amastic coating with exceptionaladhesion properties. It can bespray or brush applied to deliverlong-term protection in a widerange of corrosive environments.

Sealing Mastics - Jointing Asphalt Road Surfaces
20,000 Metres of DensobandJointing Strip Usedon the M25
Densoband is being used to form a flexible watertight joint betweenconcrete and asphalt on the major resurfacing project being carriedout on the M25 between Clacket Lane Services and the junction withthe M26. Main contractors are Fitzpatrick Contractors, with sub-contractors Tarmac Ltd National Contracts applying the asphalt blacktop and the Densoband jointing strip. Both carriageways are beingresurfaced over the 61⁄2 km section involving the use of 20,000metres of Densoband.
As a result of wear in excessof that originally visualised forthis section of the M25, a newconcrete reinforced pavement isbeing layed on the existingsurface of the inside lane andmiddle lane of each carriageway, with new Macadam asphalt onthe hard shoulder and outsidelane. Following application ofDensoband Primer, Tarmac Ltdare applying the Densoband as avertical jointing strip betweenthe new concrete pavement andthe Macadam asphalt base courseeach side of it.Approved by the HighwaysAgency and the British AirportsAuthority, Densoband forms aflexible watertight joint betweenhot rolled asphalt and asphalt, concrete or steework. Becausewater, salts, pollutants, weedseeds etc cannot penetrate thesealed joint it remains unaffectedby extremes of temperature andfurther deterioration.
The prudent use ofDensoband as an asphalt jointsealant greatly reduces futureroad maintenance costs andexpensive, unpopular repairsmaking it a cost effectivealternative to traditional jointingmaterials.

Canada
Sealing Mastics - Jointing Asphalt Road Surfaces
The Canadian division of Denso North America Inc. has long been aleader in supplying corrosion protection solutions to the pipelineindustry in Canada.
This success with the pipelineindustry is largely due to ourinvolvement in particular with
the oil & gas transmissionsectors. We are, however, alsofocused on the transportationsector across Canada. Denso roadproducts are becoming very wellknown for providing solutionsfor the joint sealing of asphalt, concrete and steel appurtenancesin the transportation industry.
One such product isDensoband, a modified polymerbitumen strip applied betweenold asphalt, concrete or steelsurfaces and a new asphalt inlay. This material is produced in rollform with a disposable interleavefilm and is used in conjunctionwith a bitumen based primer.Densoband has high adhesivequalities and can withstand
asphalt movement as well asthermal expansion andcontraction. It provides an
excellent uniform, flexiblewaterproof seal.
Applications in Canadahave included new roadconstruction, roadrehabilitation, bridges, railsystems, municipal parkinggarages and road cuts toname a few. We have appliedDensoband between twoasphalt surfaces, betweenasphalt and concretesurfaces andbetween asphalt tosteel, includingasphalt and heavyindustrial rubber
bumpers used at railcrossings for anti-vibration.
One of the moreinteresting projects theCanadian group hasrecently been involvedin was therehabilitation of crewpits at the MontrealGrand Prix, heldannually in Canada aspart of the worldwideFormula One racingcircuit. Ourinvolvement in thisproject was to providejoint sealing betweenthe old asphalt roadsurface and new paved
pit areas for crew maintenance. This joint sealing had toguarantee a complete waterproofseal and Densoband was theonly product called upon thatcould meet the strictspecifications laid down for thisrace.
There is nothing morethrilling than to watch thesemagnificent high speed racingmachines travel around a circuitexcept when the drivers cross‘the Densoband finish line’ inthe pit area. We really thinkDensoband deserves thechequered flag!

Corrosion Prevention - Jetty Piles / Splash Zone
New SeaShield System GuardsNew Humber Ro-Ro Terminal
The Humber Sea Terminal Ro-Ro berth, owned by Simon Carves, islocated on the south bank of the Humber. The conditions in theestuary are extreme with very fast tidal flows, short periods of slackwater and zero visibility, which makes working in the water verydifficult and hazardous.
When the contractor, EdmundNuttall, was instructed to installa corrosion control coating onthe steel piles below low waterthey approached Winn & Coales(Denso) Ltd for theirrecommendation.
In a team effort betweenNuttals, the diving contractorJones Marine, and Winn &Coales, a system, SeaShield 2000HD, incorporating an extremely
robust securing mechanism wasdeveloped to stand up to the fastand turbulent tidal flow.
To maximise the shortworking time available at slackwater, a hinged cage device wasconstructed to hold the SeaShieldjacket in place around the pile.At slack water the cage was
lowered down the pile to thedesired position, the divers thenentered the water and quicklypositioned the jacket and securedit firmly around the pile.
With careful management, optimum use was made of theavailable time and the installationof the SeaShield 2000 HD systemwas completed successfully.

Corrosion Prevention - Protection of Prestressed Stay Cables
Denso Void Filler HelpsProtect Latest Medway Bridge
The completion of the strengthening of the M2 bridge over theRiver Medway by contractors Edmund Nuttall Ltd to carry M2 roadtraffic means that there is now a bridge carrying east to west trafficand a second for west to east. A third bridge to be built at thislocation will be for the high speed Chunnel rail link.
Denso Void Filler has beenused to play its part in theanti-corrosion protection of theprestressed stay cables thatsupport the bridge, which wereinstalled by specialistsub-contractors Freyssinet. The96 prestressed cables, with amaximum length of 148m, arepregrouted and Freyssinetspecified Denso Void Filler toprovide long life protection tothe end caps.
Denso Void Filler is apetrolatum compound whichcontains additives to displacemoisture and inhibit corrosion. It can be injected cold or hot, ifrequired, from a heated tankwith its own pumping systemspecifically designed by Winn &Coales Engineering Division.
Denso Tape was also used onthis Medway bridge forprotection on the supportingMacalloy bars at the side of thebridge.

Sealing Mastics - Jointing Precast Concrete Units
Tokstrip Sealant Used forPrecast ConcreteHydrobreak System
Contractors GMI Construction Group plc of Leeds have recentlydeveloped a 21⁄2 acre site at Sandiacre, near junction 25 of the M1 inNottinghamshire for the construction of office units for BusinessHomes of Leeds. The work included the construction of a holdingtank for surface water as part of a hydrobreak system for the site.
This holding tank was formedfrom a twin run of precastconcrete culvert sections suppliedand delivered to site by HansonConcrete Products. Each sectionweighed 24 tonnes andmeasured 6m x 2.9m x 1.4m(internal dimensions). The useof Tokstrip, flexible joint sealantbetween the culvert sections onthis project was specified by theconsultants, White , Young andGreen of Leeds. In order toavoid an existing building, theholding tank constructed fromthe precast concrete culverts wassplit into two lengths: one of36m length and the other 22m.
Tokstrip has gained anenviable 40 year track record ofuse within the constructionindustry, To ensure its lead inthe market place the product has
recently undergone a majorrevamp. Only one grade ofTokstrip is now required for allyear round use and it is moreuser friendly and easier tohandle. The standard Tokstripprimer is now faster drying anda clear primer is available forareas where appearance isimportant. Under compressionTokstrip deforms through thejoints to provide a flexiblewatertight seal.
Each of the 6m x 2.9m Hanson culvert sections werejoined together using Tokstrip flexible joint sealant.

Corrosion Prevention - Pipelines
The Denso PetrolatumInterface Coating System
When pipeline companies begin coating rehabilitation projects, theselection of the mainline coating material is only half the battle. Justas critical as the new field applied coating is the tie-in coating (orinterface coating) that encapsulates and seals the new coating to theold existing one.
The Denso PetrolatumInterface Coating System is atransitional coating system usedbetween dissimilar coatings suchas asphalt, enamel, bees wax, polyethylene, adhesive tapes,FBE, liquid coatings etc. As withall Denso petrolatum tapesystems a big advantage isminimal surface preparation ofSSPC-SP.2 (hand tool cleaning)or SSPC-SP.3 (power toolcleaning). Another key benefitwith this system is that thematerials can be applied to wetpipe, in cold or hot weather and
to cold or hot operating pipe. The system consists of Denso
Paste, Densyl Tape and DensoGlass Outerwrap. First a thinlayer of Denso Paste is spreadone to two feet (300-600mm)onto both the new and oldcoating. Secondly the DensylTape is spirally wrapped with a55% overlap to create a doublelayer system. Finally the DensoGlass Outerwrap is applied witha 55% overlap a minimum of 4inches (100mm) over the DensylTape. additional layers willprovide increased mechanical
strength and soil stressprotection.
There are many conditions towhich the denso PetrolatumInterface Coating is ideallysuited:
● As a tie-in or interface coating between dissimilar metals.
● As a transitional coating fromthe below ground coating to the above ground coating. The Denso Glass Outerwrap can be painted to match above ground piping.
● As an encapsulation coating over pipeline repair systems such as Clockspring, Petrosleeves etc.The Denso Petrolatum
Interface Coating system israpidly becoming the preferredsystem for many major pipelinecompanies in both the UnitedStates and Canada.

Corrosion Prevention - Exposed Steel Pipes
Ultra Long-term DensoSteelcoat Protection SavesSewage Pipes Replacement
During a recent comprehensive maintenance inspection at theBothwellbank Sewage Treatment works near Hamilton, Glasgow,West of Scotland Water’s engineers debated whether to replace thetwo steel sewer inlet pipes on the connecting pipebridge over theRiver Clyde.
The pipebridge has a totalspan of 78m and carries two600mm sewage pipes into theTreatment Works. The passingyears confirmed that the previousconventional paint system hadgreatly deteriorated withconsiderable thinning of the steelpipes due to corrosion and wear.
Initially, the West of ScotlandWater’s engineers consideredreplacing the two pipes. Thenhaving studied the specificationand recent case histories of theSteelcoat 400/100 Tape WrapSystem, the decision was madeto reline the pipes and thenwrap and coat the externalsurfaces with the Densomaterials. The pipebridgestructure did not require such aheavy duty system so the DensoSteelcoat 700 Epoxy system wasselected. Abrasive blast cleaningwas not necessary and thecontractors applying the SteelcoatSystems wereBorderCoatings ofLeaderfoot,Melrose.
The DensoSteelcoat400/100System hasa lifeexpectancy of 30 yearsandcomprises aninner layer ofHi-Tackpetrolatum
tape and primer and an outerlayer of bitumen based UltrasealTape and Acrylic Topcoat. Thetough, robust system guaranteesa minimum coating thicknessof 2.5mm. Steelcoat 700 System applied tothe surrounding steelworkconsists of two coats of brushapplied Denso S.T. Epoxy (twocolours). Denso Weathershieldwas a final coat option forexposed conditions.
A new lease of life - the pipes were protected withthe Denso Steelcoat 400/100 System and thesurrounding pipebridge structure was protected withthe Denso Steelcoat 700 System.

Corrosion Prevention - Exposed Steel Pipes
Denso Steelcoat SystemSelected For Repairs On WasteWater Treatment Pipes
Located in Western Australia, the Jandakot Waste Water Plant hasnumerous above ground pipes coated with coal tar epoxy. When itbecame evident that, due to fire damage, significant areas of coal tarcoating had to be removed, preference was given for the DensoSteelcoat 300 System which offers the benefit of extremely fastapplication time.
The pipe surface was firstpowertool cleaned and then asingle wrap of Denso ColourTape(white) was applied with a 55%overlap to ensure a doublecoating thickness.
Centre: The Denso Steelcoat 300 System was exceptionallyquick to apply.
