The Westmorland StreetBridge is a 13 span bridgestructure connecting commutersfrom Fredericton, NewBrunswick’s south shore, acrossthe Saint John River, to thenorth shore business district.
During the summer of 2002,the Department of Transport
began a rehabilitation programfor a major 17,500 square meterdeck repair on this 22 year-oldstructure. The project involvedasphalt removal, deck repair,replacement of expansion joints,waterproofing membraneinstallation, edge sealantinstallation (Densoband) and anew asphalt topcoat.
Recognizing the need foradditional waterproofingprotection, design engineersspecified Densoband in 45mm x8mm sizes to control the ingressof water and chlorides (salts) atthe curb low points, along bothedge joints of the road surface.

Denso Overbanding Tape Usedto Seal Sewage Manhole Covers
Sealing Mastics - Cracks in Asphalt Road Surfaces
Several hundred reinstatementsaround sewage manhole coversin North Wales have beensealed with the standard DensoOverbanding Tape by K.M.Construction (North Wales)Ltd. The work was for PGSAtlantic Power, who operatethe sewage networkmaintenance contract forWelsh Water in the NorthWales area bounded by theWirral, Whitchurch andthrough to Holyhead.
Denso Overbanding Tape is conventionally used for the surfacesealing of open seams or cracks up to 5mm wide in road pavements onsecondary roads. Purchased from Denso stockists W.T. Burden, K.M.Construction say that they found the product gave the followingadvantages over conventional bitumen methods for sealing aroundmanhole covers: speed of application; vehicle time on roadsconsiderably reduced; clean to handle; product occupies far less vehicle
space which is at a premium.Denso Overbanding Tape consistsof a blend of polymer modifiedbitumen in tape form protectedby a disposable release film.Its main benefits include: instantseal against water; fastinstallation; traffic can pass overimmediately; its elastic propertiesaccommodate thermalmovement.
Denso ‘Skid Resistant’Overbanding Tape Launched
Denso is delighted to announce the introduction of its new SkidResistant Overbanding Tape as an important addition to its qualityrange of sealing and jointing products for asphalt or concreteroad surfaces.
The new tape has a specialtextured surface which has beenindependently tested and provedto exceed the minimum skidresistance value for overbandingmaterials specified by theDepartment for Transport.
Designed for sealing cracks orfailed reinstatements (up to5mm wide) on secondary roadpavements, use of the new tapeprevents the entry of waterwhich will eventually causemore damage and breakdown ofthe pavement. The special skidresistant surface is an addedsafety feature which should bewelcomed by contractors,
utilities and highway authoritiesalike. Another quality of the tapethat should appeal to theconservation conscious is thefact that it is made from

Denso Protection For AngloAmerican Corporation Tanks
Corrosion Prevention - Coating and Lining Tanks
When the Anglo American Corporation decided it was time to applya corrosion prevention coating and lining system to their storagetanks they contacted Denso South Africa (Pty) Ltd for advice onsuitable Denso systems.
With attractive cost savingsavailable due to the minimalamount of surface preparationrequired they finally chose theDenso Steelcoat 700 System forall external areas of the tanks.Only requiring surfacepreparation to Swedish StandardSt2, the main component of theSteelcoat 700 system, Denso S.T.Epoxy, was a sensible choiceoffering long-term protection forthe exposed metal surfaces.
For protecting the internaltank linings, Archco-RigidonRigspray was chosen for itsexcellent permeability andvery good chemical andabrasion resistance.
The Anglo AmericanCorporation were so pleasedwith the finished job that theydecided to coat all of theirventilation fans with Rigsprayas well (see cover picture).

Corrosion Prevention - Exposed Process Plant Pipework
Darling Downs Bacon is located at Toowoomba in Queensland’sDarling Downs region and as the name suggests manufactures bacon,hams and a large range of associated small goods.
Upkeep of the paintedsurfaces has been on an ongoingprocess due to the aggressiveenvironment and the need topresent a pristine condition forthe manufacture of foodproducts.
After promotion anddemonstration of the DensoSteelcoat 400 System, Darlingdowns Bacon took the option ofcladding some of their processpipes with the system overcoatedwith Acrylic Topcoat for pipelineidentification purposes. Thesuccess of the initial applicationand the confidence in theproduct that was generated hasled to the Steelcoat 400 Systembeing adopted as the preferredsystem for prevention ofcorrosion and has now beenapplied to structural steework aswell as pipework.
A significant advantage of theDenso system is that it can beapplied to areas where there is a
minimum clearance around thestructure. These places wouldnormally suffer from ongoingcorrosion attack as alternativeprotection systems cannot dealwith them properly.
Radolid Caps Used forMounting Bolt Protection

Contractor Concrete Protection and Repair, recently concluded oneof the largest Radolid Cap projects in Christchurch, New Zealand.Due to structural damage to the pre-stressed concrete slabs that formthe base of Cashin Quay, Opus International Consultants decided toadd steel strengthening members to the underside of the wharf.
that could be adapted to a rangeof thread lengths. As addedinsurance Denso also suppliedSeaShield Primer (Denso PasteS105) for application to thethread and nuts under theRadolid caps.
Not long after the workon the wharf was completed itwas put to the test by a severestorm. Pounding waves sprayedup through the strengthenedwharf slabs onto the deck butas expected the Radolid capsremained completelyundisturbed.
Asset owner Lyttleton Port Coselected Radolid bolt caps as thebest solution to protect the nutand projecting thread of 400separate mounting bolts that
were used to secure the steelstrengthening members. Becausethere is no set length ofprojecting thread, Densospecified a telescopic Radolid cap

Denso Steelcoat 400 ProtectionFor Pipe Crossings
Corrosion Prevention - Exposed Pipe Crossings
Hamilton City Council have refurbished 12 above ground pipelinesusing the Denso Steelcoat 400 System. The Steelcoat 400 system waschosen because of its ability to provide a long service life withoutthe need for abrasive blast surface preparation.
The specialist contractors forthis project were GMR Holmac(a licensed Denso SteelcoatApplicator). GMR Holmac firstcleaned the substrate to SwedishStandard St2 (hand tool surfacepreparation only - no abrasive
blasting was required). Oncesurface preparation was completeDenso Profiling Mastic was usedto contour all fittings andirregular profiles. This wasfollowed with an application (bybrush and roller) of
Denso Bitumen PenetratingPrimer. The primed surfacewas then wrapped with a barrelapplication of Denso UltrasealBitumen Membrane Tape.To fully seal the system andto provide UV protection itwas then overcoated withDenso Acrylic Topcoat(environmental green).
The fully installed system willprovide a minimum service lifeof twenty years allowing theCouncil to protect the value oftheir asset while also protectingthe environment.

Tokstrip Sealant Used InRainwater Attenuation Tank
Sealing Mastics - Jointing Precast Concrete Units
In order to minimise any potential flood risk from heavy rain,contractors O’Halloran and O’Brien, who are carrying outgroundworks for Linden Homes’ development of new housing atMaidstone, have constructed an attenuation tank to store rain waterand release it slowly as required.
They worked in conjunctionwith Brierkrete, who supplied26 precast concrete culvertsections for the construction ofthe attenuation tank. The precastsections have a V-shaped invertand are 3.3m wide and1350mm at the bottom of the‘V’. To seal the individualsections, Brierkrete specifiedTokstrip flexible jointing strip.

Tokstrip has gained anenviable 40 year track recordof use within the constructionindustry. Under compression itdeforms through the joint toprovide a flexiblewatertight seal.

Denso Petrolatum Tape ProtectsCooling Tower After 25 Years
Corrosion Prevention - Exposed Cooling Tower Piping
The Denso Petrolatum Tape System has provided external corrosionprotection for over 25 years on the exposed piping at the AmericanGeneral Building in Houston, TX. After the original paint coatingfailed within a few years of operation, the Denso Petrolatum TapeSystem was applied in 1977 and is still providing excellentcorrosion protection.
The tape system has exceededthe life of the cooling tower thatit was applied to. The originalcooling tower is being replacedwith a new tower that is moreefficient. An inspection of thepipe revealed the surfaceunderneath the tape to be inexcellent condition with nocorrosion. Due to the longevityof the Denso product the
engineers specified the DensoPetrolatum Tape System toprotect all the piping, H-beamsand valves on the newcooling tower.
There is increased concernabout the external corrosionprotection of the piping andvalves because of the highlycorrosive environment. Thecontinuous exposure to water,chlorine and other corrosivechemicals limit the life of atypical paint coating to less thanthree years. Engineers andmaintenance personnel choosethe Denso Petrolatum TapeSystem as it has proven to becost effective and providelong-term corrosion prevention.Furthermore, it is easy to applyand does not requireabrasive blasting.
The Denso Petrolatum TapeSystem consists of petrolatumbased primer and tape. The tapeis composed of a non-wovensynthetic fabric carrier that isimpregnated with a petrolatumcompound and inert siliceousfillers. Denso developed theoriginal petrolatum tape in 1929and since has protected millionsof square feet of steel in avariety of highlycorrosive environments.

Denso North America Inc. USA recently introduced a new self-adhesive membrane for ceramic tiling called Quick-Tile. The product, designed to replace conventional tiling adhesive by taking away the mess and long drying times before grouting, has captured the imagination of American ‘DIYers’ and is currently in great demand.

Archco-Rigidon Lining ForNuclear Power Station Pump
Corrosion Prevention - Lining Cooling Water Pump
The Coatings Division of Weir Engineering Services, based atHeysham near Lancaster, have recently relined a major cooling waterpump unit for a nuclear power station using Archco-Rigidon 423Dand 523D corrosion resistant linings.
It is the latest refurbishmentproject carried out by WeirEngineering’s Coatings Divisionfor several nuclear andconventional power stationsusing the Archco-Rigidonrange of glass flake vinylester coatings.
The company is involved inrelining and other refurbishmentwork on all types of liquidhandling equipment and tanksfor a wide range of customers,including the Severn Trent WaterAuthority. This is a tribute tothe proven track record of theArchco-Rigidon range of liningsfor long life corrosion anderosion resistance.

A Denso Tape system has been used at the Ellesmere Port Works ofVauxhall Motors to give protection to new pipework forming part ofthe existing fire main.
The main contractors, McTayEngineering, have installed anew water tank and some 40metres of new pipework whichis temporarily connected to theexisting fire main pipework. It isplanned to replace this in thenear future with a two new14in and 10in water mainsfeeding back to the pump house.
Sub contractors DeborahServices applied the Denso Tapesystem in accordance with CivilEngineering Specification for theWater Industry, P1 Specification,on all buried sections of the
pipework and to the joints andvalves on above ground sections.The system consists of DensoPaste followed by Denso Hi-TackTape, overwrapped with DensoPVC Tape.
A 50m over ground section of a 600mm Transco gas main inRotherham has been given long-term protection with DensoSteelcoat 700 System comprising Denso S.T. Epoxy andWeathershield liquid coatings in a recent maintenance programme.
There are several historicalreasons for this section of thegas main being above ground. Itis near a canal and a railwayembankment, which has led tocontinuous wet soil conditions.It also runs close to a sheetmetal works where there areseveral culverts and pits in thefactory grounds.
When Transco drew up itsrecent maintenance programme,a long-life coating system wasspecified. SITE Coatings Ltd ofDoncaster, who won the contractto carry out the renovation workon behalf of Transco, specified
the Denso system. Aftermechanical wire brushing toremove all loose paint coatings,SITE Coatings applied two coatsof Denso S.T. Epoxy followed bytwo coats of Weathershield.
Denso S.T. Epoxy is a masticcoating with exceptionaladhesion properties. It can bespray or brush applied to deliverlong-term protection in a widerange of corrosive environments.Denso Weathershield is anacrylic based topcoat to giveextra protection and to preventchalking after exposure tosunlight.
