ʺA mentor empowers a person to see a possible future, and believe it can be obtained.ʺ
~ Shawn Hitchcock
January is National Mentoring Month, and at Alum RockCounseling Center we are celebrating the importance and benefitof youth mentoring. National studies show that atrisk youth whohave been involved in a positive mentoring experience haveincreased high school graduation rates, healthier relationships, better lifestyle choices, improved behavior both at home and atschool, and improved school attendance and academicachievement.
While research proves having a mentor can have a power effecton a child, it is the real life stories that best demonstrate thetransformation that can take place when an adult cares andmakes a commitment to the mentoring of a child. Carlos is a 6thgrade student currently attending the Ocala Middle SchoolMentoring & Support Program (OMSMSP) at Ocala STEAMAcademy. Carlos was referred to the program by the Ocalaadministration for his poor social skills, lack of communicationskills, and declining grades. During the intake session, Carlos'father requested academic support.
Carlos attends Group Mentoring every Thursday after school, where he receives tutoring followed by an enrichment activity. InLifeSkills, held every Tuesday during lunch, the OMSMSPCounselor provided tools to develop social and communicationsskills. The OMSMSP Counselor taught Carlos basic social skills inorder to develop successful interpersonal relationships such ashow to start a conversation, interaction with others, and planningsocial activities. In addition, the OMSMSP Counselor supportedCarlos with his progress in speech therapy and provided tutoringsessions three times a week. (One being mandatory).

The mentoring program has helped Carlos expand his goals andrealize his aspirations, while the enrichment activity givesstudents the opportunity to work in teams to achieve a team goalwhile having fun. Carlos finds it fun to use his new found socialand communication skills during the enrichment activity to workwith others. His teachers have reported that Carlos has improvedin his class work effort by completing more assignments whichwill result in better grades. The OMSMSP Counselor keeps inconstant communication with Carlos' father as Carlos continuesto benefit from the program. His father stated that he isappreciative for the program's services.
Mentoring can make a difference in modeling positive behaviorsand encouraging youth to achieve higher education. As you willlearn in our Mentor Spotlight below, Alex is now a mentor whovalues mentoring because it made a difference in her life whenshe was younger, and participating in a program as a mentee. Asa first generation college graduate, being part of a mentoringprogram helped her to realize she could reach her highereducation aspirations. Now, she is paying it forward as a mentorfor Alum Rock Counseling Center.
If your new year's resolution was to give back to the communityand make a difference in someone's life, I encourage you to lookinto our Ocala Middle School Mentoring & Support Program andbecome a mentor for atrisk youth. (We are in special need ofmale mentors.)

ʺEvery child deserves a champion ‑ an adult who will never give up onthem, who understand the power of connection, and insists that they
become the best that they can possibly be.ʺ ~ Rita Pierson

How did you hear about the ARCC mentoring program? I learned about ARCC's mentoring program when I was applyingto Graduate Schools. I believe it was at a Santa Clara UniversityInformation Night. Upon learning about the program, I knew Iwanted to give back and be a mentor.
What inspired you to be a mentor?

Mentoring is near and dear to my heart. Growing up, I had amentor through an organization called Hermanitas. TheHermanitas program had several elements that helped andinspired young Latinas, very similar to the Ocala Middle SchoolMentoring & Support Program. The main components of theprogram included mentoring, college outreach, outings, as well asother resources such as an annual conference in Washington DCwhere we met the Treasurer of the United States and otherwomen in Leadership. Also, as a first generation college graduate I didn't have anybodyin my family to model the college experience for me. This iswhere having a mentor really made a difference in my life. Iwanted to provide that opportunity and difference for youth atOcala.
What do you enjoy most about mentoring?Getting to know the student and their families has been a greatexperience for me. Building a relationship with the student'sfamily and gaining their trust has been very rewarding.
What do you do with your mentee? My mentee and I participate in activities and events that interesther, such as having ice cream and yogurt, experiencing new food, going to the movies, and we talk on the phone and text on aregular basis, all while providing my mentee with support andencouragement to reach her goals and aspirations. We've alsobeen to the beach in Carmel, and I gave her a tour of the NDNUcampus. Together we have attended many events arranged byARCC such as ice skating, Disney on Ice, California Academy ofSciences, and sporting events.
I've also showed her where I work and explained to her what Ido. I've tried to show her my everyday life in Monterey County. Ithink it's as important that she gets to know me as I get to knowher.
Do you have any advice for future mentors? I would just say to give mentoring a try! It's amazing and it's agreat experience being able to be a role model to the students. Also, take advantage of the opportunities and free events thatARCC provides for mentors and mentees, like tickets to sportingevents and outings. Celina is great at communicating andarranging opportunities for you and your mentee.

The Ocala Middle School Mentoring and Support Program at OcalaSTEAM Academy is in need of Mentors for the 20152016 schoolyear. The goal of Alum Rock Counseling Center's Ocala MentoringProgram is to pair 60 atrisk middle school students who attendOcala Middle School in East San Jose with mentors in order toimprove their academic and future success by offering specializedoneonone mentoring. Mentors help their mentees seek out positive role models andprovide them safe recreational activities. They help youth realizetheir full potential and influence them to make healthier choicesthat lead to physical, social and emotional wellness. Our wonderful Volunteer Coordinator, Celina Chun helps matchyouth with mentors for the program as well as support mentoringrelationships. Our mentoring program is unique in that we matchmentors with mentees for a yearlong commitment, which weexpect at least 6 hours of mentoring to happen a month. You andyour mentee schedule time to talk or meet up; it is not astructured time that the program sets. We are in dire need of mentors, and especially those who have

come from similar backgrounds and communities as our studentsand families. This would be a great opportunity for thoseinterested in giving back to the community, working in aneducational mentoring setting, and in a district in which ourstudents and families really deserve the resources to succeed, but are not always provided for them. We would greatly appreciate it if you could share this opportunitywith your fellow alumni, friends and family. For more informationfeel free to contact Celina Chun at [email protected] or(408) 9100446.
