Message from the Director

Leadership and staff development are the cornerstones of all successful organizations. At Kawartha Pine Ridge, we are committed to providing opportunities for our staff to engage in purposeful, engaging learning programs. Inside this calendar you will find information on many of our leadership and development programs.

For those who want to further refine and develop leadership skills, the Building Leadership Capacity Program provides a range of skill-building opportunities from writing and communications to team work and conflict resolution. The Advanced Leadership Program provides an opportunity for employees to learn some of the skills necessary for supervisory and school administration positions within our school board. We also have programs for both new Teachers and new Administrators, along with specialized training for the roles of Head Secretary and Head Custodian. All of these programs are in addition to the many ongoing professional development and conference opportunities available to our staff throughout the year.

Successful leaders build positive relationships; they are committed to accountability, act with respect and integrity, and rise to challenges with a wealth of skills, knowledge and experience. We need exemplary leaders in all areas of our school board to help our students and our schools succeed, to foster innovative practices, and to mentor one another.

Employees, regardless of the position they hold, can play a significant role in improved student achievement and well-being through the demonstration of effective leadership.

Leadership in the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board is defined through the KPR Leadership Profile, which is the central element that connects succession planning and talent development activities and is essential in fostering high-quality leadership throughout the organization. The KPR Leadership Profile has been developed to help all employees articulate common messages using a shared leadership language, and to create clear, transparent processes. This profile incorporates the Ontario Leadership Framework competencies along with KPR’s own leadership requirements including effective communications and the knowledge and skills required of specific positions within the Board.

A competency is the capability to apply or use a set of related knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform critical work functions or tasks in a work setting.

At the core of our leadership competencies lie the KPR Character Attributes of self-awareness, resiliency, and equity and inclusion, which is why they appear as the foundation to our Leadership Profile. These are infused in all of the leadership domains identified below and are supported by specific competencies, definitions and indicators for each.

CONTINUING YOUR EDUCATION. OR, EMBARKING ON A NEW CAREER PATH

Where do you start when you are looking to change positions or upgrade your current skills for a position to which you are aspiring, when you can’t give up your current, full-time job? Most adults do not have the privilege of going back to school on a full-time basis, for a variety of reasons. The good news is there are several options available to gain the skills needed in order to move ahead.

First, be sure you understand the qualification requirements for the position to which you aspire, before you register for any courses.

As you advance in any role, there are often additional (formal) educational requirements that must be met in order to be considered for the position.

Review the job description and/or speak with the appropriate HR Staffing Specialist staff for more information. For additional role specific information

on various roles within KPR, check out Leadership’s Virtual Career Fair on our website.

You may be able to attend training/in-service offered through the Leadership and Staff Development department or others, in order to further develop your skills. Does the position require a recognized college or university certificate, diploma or degree?

Colleges and universities offer certificates and diplomas through part-time programs that vary in length and learning delivery options.

o Part-time students can apply directly through a college for on-campus classes (evenings or weekends) through the college’s continuing education department.

o OntarioLearn is a partnership of 24 Ontario community colleges that have pooled their resources to increase your online learning options. You can search through their program inventory and register with any partner college offering the course. Check out OntarioLearn.com for more information.

New Teacher Induction ProgramAudience: New teachers in their first contract, or first LTO of longer than 97 days

The New Teacher Induction Program (NTIP) is legislated and funded by the Ministry of Education. The Program directly supports first and second year teachers, and beginning long-term occasional teachers in their first LTO of longer than 97 days. The supports include orientation, mentoring and professional development.

In addition to the more formal in-service provided for our NTIP teachers and their mentors, our online NTIP Gateway, housed on Desire to Learn (D2L), offers specific information and links including:

ORIENTATION PROGRAMSAudience: New Employees

Your Leadership team has been working hard, together with our internal partners, to create learning programs that employ best practices in blended learning for new employees, in order to orient them to the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board in their first year of employment. We are happy to report that we are in Phase 1 of the rollout of these job specific learning programs and have launched our new online learning program for occasional secretaries, new leaders and occasional teachers, with revisions to their corresponding, role specific, in-services.

Dates are scheduled throughout the year to accommodate the planned hiring schedules for various employee groups.

Building Leadership Capacity ProgramAudience: All Employees

The Building Leadership Capacity Program is focused on the foundational aspects of leadership and is open to all employees. It provides staff with the softer skills necessary to interact with staff, students and the community while reflecting the values of the Board. Any employee can enroll in any one of the sessions listed below. Employees who complete all eight sessions will receive a certificate of completion for the Building Leadership Capacity Program. Sessions are available during the evening, and some PA Days.

Important: Employees who wish to attend sessions that overlap with their regularly scheduled hours require the approval of their direct supervisor. Formal arrangements must be made well in advance of the sessions, with your specific supervisor.

Description: Many problems in the workplace arise from lack of clear communication. The fact is effective leaders are effective communicators. But what are the best ways to communicate with your peers, supervisors, parents or the public? How can you get past difficult emotional barriers, make your feelings known, and negotiate effective solutions? How can you use assertiveness to stand up for your basic human rights, without trampling the rights of others? This workshop will answer these questions, and show you how effective listening and appropriate body language can help support your message. You’ll also have the opportunity to practice your new, effective, assertive communications skills.

Description: Following a self-assessment, participants are introduced to five basic conflict-handling modes. Building Operator Internship Program (BOIP)Audience: Employees aspiring to the position of Head/Assistant Custodian

The Facilities Services Department, working with local community college partners and CUPE 5555, have developed a program that provides training in the safe, energy efficient and environmentally sound operation of our schools and buildings, along with the skills necessary to relate to staff, students and the public.

Effective January 1, 2011, those aspiring to Head/Assistant Custodian positions must have completed the BOIP before posting into these positions.

The Program consists of leadership training, provided through the KPRDSB Building Leadership Capacity Program and Building Operator Internship Program. The Building Operator Internship Program is provided through Durham College and it will cover the following topics:

• AirConditioning&Refrigeration

School Office Administrator Program (SOAP)Audience: Employees aspiring to the positions of Secondary Head Secretary or Elementary Secretary I

The Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board, in consultation with the Secretarial Dialogue Committee and CUPE Local 5555, created the School Office Administrator Program for all elementary and secondary school secretaries. The Program has been designed to support the changing demands of the role of a school secretary.

Effective June 2011, those aspiring to the position of Secondary Head Secretary or Elementary Secretary I must have completed the Program requirements below, before posting into a Head Secretary position.

The Program consists of Trillium Essentials training and completion of the Building Leadership Capacity Certificate Program.

The Building Leadership Capacity Program comprises eight modules. See table of contents for pages referring to descriptions, dates, times and locations.

Trillium Essentials training, which is required for all school secretaries, comprises the following Trillium Essentials modules:

Advanced Leadership ProgramAudience: Open to all employees by application

Do you know what the “X-Factor” of great leadership is? Have you ever wondered why some people seem to be able to achieve exceptional results more so than others? Are you aspiring to a leadership position? Are you committed to be exemplary in that role?

The Advanced Leadership Program focuses on the leadership skills necessary to be a successful supervisor, manager or vice-principal. Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, authors of “The Leadership Challenge” define leadership as “the art of mobilizing others to want to struggle for shared

aspirations.” Their research has shown that exemplary leadership comes from disciplined practice of certain behaviours.

The Advanced Leadership Program focuses on what those exemplary leadership practices are and how they relate to the KPR Leadership Profile, and the Ontario Leadership Framework. Through self-reflection, group activities and assignments, participants will gain a better understanding of their leadership strengths and will have the opportunity to identify and address specific leadership practices, to further hone.

This is a two year Program. The first year is comprised of ten 3 to 3.5 hour, in-class sessions, chapter readings, study group assignments and presentations. In year two, there is an expectation that participants will continue to practice their learning in the workplace and provide a periodic, written progress summary report.

In addition, study groups will be assigned a leadership project and a formal presentation will be due at one in-class session at the end of the Program. Participants of the Program will be supported further at the end of the two years, through participation in a Leadership Practices Inventory assessment.

The Program is available on an application basis only. A call for applicants for the 2017 - 2019 program will be sent out to all employees in March 2017.

Building School Climate, an introduction to Restorative PracticeAudience: All Employees

Date: Multiple sessions will be offered throughout the school year. See below for a full listing of dates and locations

Description: Restorative practice is a way of thinking and being. It provides a way for acting together as a community, and for teaching the importance of community. The aim of restorative practice is to focus on strengthening relationships, to deal with conflict or tension and to repair harm.

In schools, restorative practice uses a proactive “whole school” approach to preventing and addressing situations where harm has been done. It helps the school or classroom community address issues such as bullying or cyber-bullying before they reach a problem stage. Restorative practice has direct application to teaching, learning, and creating and maintaining safe, caring and restorative schools. It also helps students take responsibility for their actions and “make things right”, so they can once again become a positive part of the school community. Restorative practice incorporates firm and fair practices, fair process, and specific restorative questions. It allows schools to build on existing successful practices, and enhances rather than replaces those existing approaches. It is used in addition to, not instead of, disciplinary consequences. Schools using restorative

practice report a safer, more inclusive and connected learning environment, with increased opportunities to improve student achievement. As adults involved in the education system, in schools and in classrooms, we all have the opportunity to build community, to build school climate and to strengthen relationship when there is conflict or tension. Each person has the opportunity to work at making things right when things go wrong.

Sessions are available during the day and evening. Employees who wish to attend sessions that overlap with their regularly scheduled hours of work require the approval of their direct supervisor.

Focusing on Using Our Equity Lens Certificate (Part 1 & Part 2)Audience: All Employees

Description: The Focusing Our Equity Lens Certificate Program is aimed at addressing the importance of equity, diversity and inclusion for everyone in school and workplace environments. Modeled after the Harmony Movement’s Educators Equity Workshop, this Program is designed for all staff, particularly for educators, administrators and support staff, who share the goal of fostering more equitable schools and classrooms.

Sessions will lead participants through experiential learning activities and guided self-reflection and analysis on the path to creating equitable and inclusive learning and working environments. Participants will be actively encouraged to question their own beliefs and practices, through activities that can be used in the classroom with students or with staff.

The Program objectives include developing participant’s confidence and capacity to:

• Adoptanequitylensapproachsoastoworkmore effectively with students, colleagues and community members, as well as to examine the education system and professional practices;

• Understandhowinequitymanifestsatthesystemic and individual levels;

• Explorehowpowerandprivilegemayleadtoinequity and exclusion, and identify ways to address inequity and exclusion;

• Understandtheimpactofbiasandstereotypeson students, colleagues, administrators and ourselves; and

• Addressexistinggapsinachievementandopportunity between groups of students.

This program consists of two, 3 hour sessions. In order to receive the certificate, you MUST attend both sessions.

Creating Safe and Positive SpacesAudience: All Employees

Description: For many lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, queer or questioning (LGBTQ) students and staff, a school is not always a safe and accepting place. Gender-based and homophobic, biphobic, and transphobic bullying and harassment are neither rare nor harmless, and are real issues in Canadian schools and workplaces.

KPR’s “Creating Safe and Positive Spaces” initiative, aims to further promote and support the creation of safe and caring school climates, where all members of the school and Board community are respected.

Facilitated by Egale Canada, and based on their Safer & Accepting Schools workshop for educators, administrators and support staff, this session aims to:

• Deepenourawarenessandunderstandingabout:

o the impact homophobia, biphobia, transphobia and feeling unsafe have on student success and performance;

o the need for safer schools for LGBTQ students, staff and families;

o LGBTQ identities and experiences;• Exploreopportunities,andourrolesand

responsibilities in creating LGBTQ safer schools;

• Provideconcretestrategies,andpracticaltools,information and resources for creating safer schools and workplaces for all;

• Buildstaffconfidenceandcapacitytofurthersupport the over-all well-being of all students; and

• SupportSchoolImprovementPlansandhelpschools reach their student wellness goals.

Description: This workshop is intended to help supervisors work through the legalities and procedures to manage an employee whose performance is less than satisfactory, from initiating an out of cycle appraisal to creating a successful improvement plan. Any supervisor working with an employee who has been experiencing performance issues, will find this session valuable. The concepts are easily transferred to dealing with a non-teaching employee whose performance requires improvement. A portion of the content will be delivered online, in advance of the session
