About this programmeA rich pool of diverse leadership talent is an advantage for every organisation. However, women’s careers often follow a very different route to the careers of men and regularly require them to consider and choose between competing and conflicting identities and professional goals. This programme provides women with an opportunity and a network of other female leaders to consider and discuss these complex issues in a supportive yet action-oriented environment.

Drawing on the latest research from the psychology of leadership, this programme is a short, eight day course which provides a relevant, refreshing and contemporary approach to leadership development for women. Anchored in the organisational psychology and research-based strengths of DCU Business School, along with practical experience, this programme is a unique development opportunity for women wishing to progress their careers across all sectors - Private, Public, Civil Service and Semi-state sectors.

The programme is highly interactive and comprises a rich mixture of self-assessment, skill development and knowledge building that together encourage goal clarification and action planning to support women’s leadership journeys.

What will you learn?This programme offers women a space to reflect on and develop the key domains of leadership behaviours and skills that are particularly valuable for women. This programme is underpinned by an interactive technology platform, which is utilised to undertake 360 feedback, a goal setting plan to monitor behavioural change and self-awareness questionnaires mapped to programme content. The programme emphasises moving from tactical to strategic thinking in respect of time, team and career.

This programme will enable you to:

2. Effectively navigate complex relationshipsand workplace challenges

3. Develop your personal leadership brand

4. Expand and enrich a meaningful professionalnetwork in your sector

Who is this programme for? This is a programme for women who carry responsibility in their organisation and have experience in managing others. It is for women who are well into their careers and are contemplating further growth in their leadership journey. It will also support those who are looking to recharge their careers and think about how to make the next step on their career journey.

Highlights of this module include understanding leadership, aligning leadership goals and personal values, and building leadership presence.

Programme Content

Leadership in practice

Leading others

Leader resource development

Highlights of this module include developing a leadership mindset, building resilience and managing conflict.

This module explores themes such as negotiation and stakeholder management, leadership brand development, leveraging networks and reputation management.

This module focuses on topics such as navigating complex relationships, persuasive communication and excelling in interpersonal relationships.

Each day commences at 9.30am and will finish no later than 4.30pm.

Duration and Dates This 8 day programme will be delivered online commencing April 2021. It has been customised to reflect the online environment and to ensure maximum engagement for all participants.

The programme dates are:

— April 19th and 26th — May 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st— June 14th and 21st

Programme Delivery Team

Dr Melrona KirraneAssociate Professor Organisational Psychology, DCU Business School

Dr Kirrane designed and developed this programme and is a nationally and internationally recognised scholar of Organisational Psychology. She has a particular expertise in leadership, organisational change, and workplace behaviour and has authored a number of consultancy reports based on her extensive engagement with industry. These include the 5-year project examining the female leadership pipeline in Ireland, in association with the 30% Club.

As well as being endorsed as a high-quality lecturer and organisational consultant, Melrona was named as a “Top ten Woman of Influence” in 2017. She was appointed Professor of Leadership at Princess Nourah Bint Abdulrahman University, Riyadh and holds Visiting Professor positions at the Technical University of Vienna and Danube University, Austria.

Andrea DermodySenior Consultant

Andrea Dermody has over twenty years’ experience working across the Global Financial Services marketplace. Supporting Melrona in designing the content for the programme, Andrea leveraged her twenty plus years practical experience in the corporate world, most of those spent in developing leaders through Talent Management, Learning and Development and Diversity and Inclusion. Most recently Andrea led inclusion and diversity for State Street in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). She is now managing director of her own consulting practice, Dermody.

Andrea holds a BA in History and Economics and a PhD in Business Studies from UCD and a Masters in Human Resource Development from Sheffield Hallam University. She is a qualified executive coach and a chartered fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).

Prof Fionnuala McAuliffeProfessor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, National Maternity Hospital Dublin

Prof McAuliffe is a consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist and a sub-specialist in maternal and fetal medicine. She is Director of the maternal and fetal medicine subspecialisation programme as well as being the Head of Women’s and Child’s Health and Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at UCD.

Fiona TierneyNon Executive Director, eir Ireland

Fiona is the former Chief Executive Officer of the Public Appointments Service. She has a career history of successful leadership in senior executive and non-executive positions in both the private and public sector. She is a Chartered Director of the Institute of Directors, a member of the Board of eir and until recently, was a member of the Civil Service Management Board and of the Board of Trocaire.

Noelia Fernandez ArroyoDirector, Large Customer, Sales for Northern Europe, Google

Noelia is a digital professional and has a degree in Journalism (Navarra) and an MBA (Chicago Booth). She is co-founder of ISDI and very active in Digital Entrepreneurship. Her key focus is to drive the digital transformation of the group, focusing on technology, digital business and culture as the key enablers.

Brid HoranCo-Chair, Balance for Better Business

Brid has over twenty years’ board level experience, executive and non-executive. Current roles include Chair Nephin Energy Ltd and Bank of Ireland Staff Pension Fund Trustees, Deputy Chair DCU Governing Authority and Non Executive Director PM Group. Prior to her retirement in late 2014 she was Deputy Chief Executive ESB. She was a co-founder of the 30% Club Ireland and is a member of their Advisory Board.

Enterprise Ireland’s 2020 Action Plan for Women in Business was recently published as part of Future Jobs Ireland, the whole-of-Government framework to prepare our businesses and workers for the future. Key to Ireland’s economic success is the optimising of the skills and talent of our people throughout all regions of Ireland. Increasing the participation of women in entrepreneurship, leadership and senior management roles will be a critical feature in this strategy.

In support of this crucial objective, Enterprise Ireland has partnered with DCU Business School to develop a relevant, inspiring and contemporary Leadership Development Programme for Women. After the resounding success of the pilot programme, we are delighted to see it roll out more broadly to support the development of female leaders in maximising their full potential and enhancing Ireland’s economic growth.
