T-shaped professionals
are characterized by
their deep disciplinary
knowledge in at least
one area, an
understanding
of systems, and their
ability to function as
“adaptive innovators”
and cross the boundaries
between disciplines.

Why Do Organizations
Need T Shaped People?
“According to those in the talent-seeking field, the most
sought-after candidates for management, consulting, research,
and other leadership positions are T-shaped.”
..............“Organizations need workers with specialized knowledge who
can also think broadly about a variety of areas, and apply their
knowledge to new settings.”
.............“Several companies, including IDEO and McKinsey and
Company, have been familiar with this concept for years
because they have always sought multidisciplinary workers
who are capable of responding creatively to unexpected
situations.”
Dr. Katharine Brooks, Psychology Today, 2012

Where Do We Get T Shaped People?
Higher education produces I-shaped graduates --
students with deep disciplinary knowledge.
The “I” shaped individual is focused largely on their particular skill-set,
views the workplace as a competitive environment, and works
within disciplinary silos.
Many colleges and universities train their graduates to be productive in
one field, but employers are placing increasing importance on skills
that reach beyond a single discipline or focus.
Tomorrow’s workers will build their careers in a globally inter-
connected and constantly changing world.
