Message from President-Elect, Stacy Hanna

1

Fellow Jaycees, Thank you for electing me as the 2013 President of the Raleigh Jaycees. With so many new faces in the chapter, I wanted to take time to introduce myself. While I often have to travel for work, my experience running HOBY this year has renewed my faith that I have time to serve as Chapter President. I joined the Raleigh Jaycees in the spring of 2006. I was drawn to the Raleigh Chapter by a project on their website, the Jaychords! For those of you who were not around then, the Jaychords was a project that allowed members and guests to learn how to sing a cappella music. Think barbershop but with pop, rap, and country music. As I got to know the members of the Jaychords, they encouraged me to become more active in the chapter. I remember specifically volunteering for the

Haunted House. I was assigned to the blackout portion of the house and spent the evening talking to someone without seeing his face until the lights came up. When night was over, I remember watching people taking off crazy makeup and costumes while reminiscing with each other about the awesome scares they got throughout the evening. I remember thinking, what in the world have I gotten myself into?

Soon thereafter, Ed Blackman asked me to join the board of directors as a community service director. That November I wrote my first 2 CPGs, Habitat for Humanity 2007 and a new project called NAMIfest, a concert where the Jaychords and two university a cappella groups got together to perform

3

and raise money for the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. The highlight was us getting to sing on the NCSU campus radio station! I have been able to use Jaycee projects to fill in the gaps of my project management skills, and actually used them to help qualify for the Project Management Professional credential. (For a list of other projects I have chaired, committees on which I have served, and positions I have held, you can visit my website at www.stacyhanna.blogspot.com and click on my Jaycee Resume.) My favorite Raleigh Jaycees project is the Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Seminar. I have been involved with the project since 2007, and love being part of the team that provides a mix of leadership skills and community service to high school rising

4

juniors. I have helped with both the East and West seminars and in 2012 I served as Project Chairperson for HOBY NC East. I currently work as a Process Improvement Specialist for RGIS, LLC. The best part of the job is being able to work from home in my pajamas. My background is Industrial Engineering and I just earned my MBA with concentrations in Supply Chain, Services Management, and Consulting. For fun I like to read, hang out with friends, travel,

5

watch movies, attend local young professional events, and sing. The advice I always give new members is to find something in the chapter that you are interested in and become involved in that project. I stress that there are lots of opportunities, but by picking one or two to get started, they will be able to create connections to people with similar interests. I encourage them to find something they are passionate about and find a way for the Jaycees to help them GROW.

6

My solid business background, my leadership experience, and my belief in the Jaycees mission make me prepared for the office of President. Success cannot be achieved without a strong team, so I hope you will step up and join me in empowering our leaders to GROW. Positions are still available for the 2013 Board of Directors. You can contact [email protected] to submit your name for election.

A Big Thank You! By: Ed Blackman, 2012 Turkey Shoot Chair

My deepest thanks to all who volunteered for the 2012 Turkey Shoot! I hope you all had as much fun as I did out at the Fair. All of the success for this year’s shoot is due to the hard work of the Turkey Shoot committee and the Jaycee and Rooster volunteers!

Helping Hand Award Winner – Connor Brady

1

The Helping Hand award is presented by the North Carolina Jaycees to recognize and thank people who support the mission and work of Jaycees. Often their support occurs behind the scenes and is not recognized by other Jaycee awards. They include spouses, significant others, family members, co-workers, secretaries, and friends. They may or may not be actual Jaycee members.

Here is the nomination form submitted on behalf of Stacy Hanna and the Raleigh Jaycees.

Connor Brady is a student at UNC and

alumni of HOBY NC. This year he went above and beyond for the HOBY projects run by Jaycee chapters in Raleigh, Winston Salem, High Point, Hickory, etc.

For West, he served on the Junior Staff, led the Introduction to Personal Development, coordinated an L4S project for the Junior Staff, and filled in at the last minute for the Leadership for Society panel.

For East, Connor served as an integral part of the HOBY NC East planning committee. He personally fundraised over $500 to support the

3

project, helped track Junior Staff fundraising, called universities on our behalf, drove to 3 Harris Teeters from High Point to Chapel Hill to utilize gift certificates to purchase supplies, helped make trips to and from Jaycee storage, transported items between East and West seminars to help keep costs down, picked up facilitators at the airport, and even served as a facilitator during the weekend.

4

When we thought our first speaker was not going to be able to attend at the last minute, he stayed up and wrote a one hour presentation on personal leadership “just in case”. Throughout the weekend he was called upon for his expertise with Junior Staff functions, while still helping his other facilitator lead a group of 10 kids; all this after serving at HOBY NC West the weekend before.

His idea to set up a group text number for the committee turned out to be the best communication tool we had during the conference. With a committee half the size of previous years, and on a new side of campus, his knowledge and ability to set up the text line save the committee members time and energy in getting things done. On Sunday, just when we thought everything was almost over, we ended

5

up with an hour to keep 400 people engaged and occupied until the closing ceremony could start. Connor recognized that cheers would not fill an hour, and his leadership and dedication went into overdrive. As the exhausted committee of 10 Jaycees watched, Connor jumped up on stage and led an impromptu review session of the weekend. He reminded the kids of things they had learned from each speaker, kept the energy in the room up, and ended the hour by having 200 kids and 200 parents participating in a human knot exercise. Even after the closing ceremony, Connor was one of the last 5 people to leave, and helped take a final load to Jaycee storage before getting the very tired project chair to the

6

celebration dinner.

Connor has already volunteered to serve on both the HOBY NC East and West committees next year, and we are both lucky to have his enthusiasm and support.

As project chair, I am humbled by the outstanding young man that Connor had become. He is a perfect example of why North Carolina Jaycees have supported the HOBY program for 34 years. It is the leadership and personal growth of students like Connor that inspire us to continue running this project every year. It is with great pleasure that I nominate him for the Helping Hands Award.

In 1934, the Raleigh Jaycees led the Goodfellows effort, which started as a holiday food drive for those impacted by the Great Depression, ensuring families would have food through the holidays and winter months. Today Goodfellows brings Christmas to the children of Raleigh, who might not otherwise have a Christmas, with a day of one-on-one attention filled with a shopping spree for their basic needs, a traditional holiday feast with all the trimmings, festivities, gifts and a special visit from Santa Claus.

Volunteering to be a chaperone for the day of Goodfellows is an extremely rewarding experience.

2

Each chaperone is paired with a child; you will ride in a wan with about six other chaperons to pick up the children. Each child gets their own chaperone to assist with clothes, shopping, and dinner. However, no chaperone is ever alone with their child. We do everything as a group and stay together as a group. If you are interested in volunteering to be a chaperone for Goodfellows 2012, download the application at http://goodfellows.org/volunteer.html and email it to the Chaperones team at [email protected]
