Paddling HighlightsAcadia Expedition
• Frenchman Bay – paddle the shoreline of the four Porcupine Islands, Rum Key, the Hop and Ironbound Island
• Deer Isle Archipelago – paddle among the numerous islands in the archipelago, primitive camp for two nights and circumnavigate Isle au Haut
• Bold Coast – paddle the shoreline of Great Wass Island near the Canadian border and hike the shoreline trails
Highlights – harbor porpoises, seals, bald eagles, rock arches, sea caves and stunning cliffs

Ascent HighlightsAcadia Expedition
• Interior mountains – ascend Penobscot, Sargent and Cedar Swamp Mountains
• Cadillac Mountain – ascend the highest peak on the island including Eagles Crag, then return via an ascent of Pemetic Mountain

Preparation and CompetenciesAcadia Expedition
• Careful screening of applicants – interviews, paddling trip, and commitment fee
• On-water training – three trips to teach and practice strokes, rescues, towing, and surf skills
• Courses – weather, tides, charts, navigation, emergency signaling, rescue services, and incident management
• Participants must demonstrate competencies in required skills
• Leaders must demonstrate competencies in advanced skills
• Mentor and local registered Maine guide will have the highest level of skills in conditions

Risk ManagementAcadia Expedition
• Team skills – selection and training
• Routes – within capabilities of the team
• Weather and sea state – parameters set for safe conditions, backup options if needed
• Rescues and medical emergencies – rescue training, 2 WFR’s and 1 AWFA certification, position location equipment and multiple communication capabilities
• Equipment – cold weather and safety
• Status – reported to ORGT management daily and, if necessary, when incidents occur
