As we start this year, I found this article that is full of good reminders.
10 things students want all teachers to know
Life of an Educator Dr. Justin Tarte
1). Students want you to actually spend the time to get to know them... Get to know your students by name as soon as possible. Learn something unique about them and find out what makes them tick. Students know when teachers don't know anything about them, so make getting to know your students a top priority. Building Friends for
Tomorrow’s Future has
gotten off to a great
start. Over 30 new
teachers participated in
the week-long
academy on July 11-14,
2016. As we continue to
provide support for
these new teachers,
please ensure that you
assign a mentor
teacher. Please send
the names of your
mentor teachers and
who they will mentor to
Lupe Lopez at
[email protected] no later
than August 8, 2016. This
will allow us to plan for
the upcoming Saturday
sessions. These sessions
are intended for both
the new teacher and
their mentor. Ensure
that you share this
calendar with your new
teachers and their
mentors and have them
attend all sessions.

Blended Learning
Team SISD is commitment to creating blended learning environments to
maximize the opportunities our students have to be prepared for the college or
career of their choice. What is blended learning?
The majority of blended-learning programs resemble one of four models:
Rotation, Flex, A La Carte, and Enriched Virtual. The Rotation model includes four
sub-models: Station Rotation, Lab Rotation, Flipped Classroom, and Individual
Rotation. Although our instructional specialist teams have been focusing on the
Rotation model, as it provides the most options for personalizing instruction, any of
the models would of create a student-centered learning environment.
For additional information on the blended learning models, visit http://
www.christenseninstitute.org/blended-learning/
Pair up with Blended Learning Universe, the online hub for all things blended
learning—Ready, Set, Blend!
http://www.blendedlearning.org/
The definition of blended learning is a formal education program in which a
student learns:
at least in part through online learning, with some element of student
control over time, place, path, and/or pace;
at least in part in a supervised brick-and-mortar location away from
home;
and the modalities along each student’s learning path within a
course or subject are connected to provide an integrated learning
experience.

Helpful Hints:
Create a safe environment: Let students know that it’s ok to
make mistakes!
Create a caring community: build relationships with your
students by getting to know them.
Focus on classroom management: create the expectations
with your students and model what they look like and what they
don’t look like. They will remember and internalize the expectations better this
way.
Communicate with Parents: Relationships with parents are important too. Help
them understand that their children will be safe with you.

Elementary
As we begin the 2016-2017 school year please remember that the first couple of weeks should focus on daily rituals and routines, to
include our ISNs. The first section of the ISN should be used as a reference page. ELAR teachers should go through the all the Literacy
Elements for Literacy Text, as well as Informational Text, to expose and define the terms for students. As you go through the year and
students forget what something is they can refer back to the ISN reference page.
Our district is going to the balanced literacy approach K-6, as such the first few weeks should be used to help students with the
workstation routines. Remember: only put what you have already taught in a workstation. You can start your workstations slowly in order
to explicitly explain each one. A great resource for this is the First 21 Days. A tool you can use is the 21 Day Planner for Small Group

Welcome back!
Great news, Think Through
Math will now be aligned to
SISD’s district pacing.
Teaching Students to Embrace Mistakes
A Fresh Take on Mistakes
To help your students rethink mistakes, help them
be specific about their errors. Knowing that answer
#3 is wrong doesn't mean much. Knowing that they
didn't understand mitosis gives them a mandate for
getting better. Often, when we go through tests with
students, the mistakes they perceive as dire are either
careless errors or a single concept applied incorrectly
on several questions. Either way, the "fix" is usually
smaller than how big the problem feels.
You can also help students view their mistakes as
helpful. The red pen isn't the enemy -- when students
understand how to deal with errors, red means go.
One way to encourage that attitude is to take the
most common mistakes that the class made on a test
or quiz and analyze them together. The more open
everyone is about the mistakes they've made and
how they happened, the less significance any
student will place on future errors.

Social Studies News
Page 6 Now Trending in Academics
Welcome to a new school year!
This will be our second year with the Social Studies digital adoption. Please make sure to contact Leslie
Goldmann ([email protected]) for any questions regarding the resource or for setting up a training to further
implement Social Studies in the classroom through ELAR and/or stations.
Teachers get “the biggest bang for their buck” when integrating Social Studies and ELAR, especially since
many of the Social Studies Process Standards align with the ELAR SEs and Figure 19. Careful planning can
lead to successful activities in which students learn reading, writing, and social studies at the exact time!
Station Idea of the Month: Sequencing!
Whether you are teaching cycles in science, timelines in social studies, plot diagrams in ELAR, or steps to
solving a problem in math, the same cognitive skill is being addressed: SEQUENCING! Introduce a sequencing
station during the Balanced Literacy Block! Each group should have a chance to visit the sequencing station
at least once during the week. Have students read a selection from the Social Studies digital textbook or a
picture book and create a timeline! Timelines can be done in many different formats and can even be
interactive. Because sequencing is taught in all content areas, this station provides students the practice
needed for mastering this cognitive skill.
Social Studies Fact of the Month:
Did you know…? On August 24 and 25, 1814 (during the War of 1812) British forces invaded Washington D.C.
and burned down the U.S. Capitol, the White House, and many other public buildings. Dolly Madison, wife of
4th President James Madison, is credited with saving the classic portrait of George Washington from the White
House.

Professional Development
We will be offering CPI Training EVERY MONTH for the 2016-2017 school year. This will facilitate the opportunity for every
campus to train their student crisis management teams.
Just as a reminder, every campus must have a TBSI campus core team which should consist of (at minimum) one special
education teacher, one general education teacher, and one administrator. Every campus will have specific needs and
may have to train additional faculty or staff in order to best meet those campus issues or needs.
All training dates are currently posted on the Staff Development website. Each training date is restricted to ONLY 40
PARTICIPANTS, therefore it is best to register early. It is also recommended that if a campus plans to train a large number of
people, they stagger their staff to attend different training dates throughout the year.

Administrators,
We have implemented some changes to the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program that you will be able to see
on the timeline provided. One big change is that campus administrators will be required to submit a minimum
of three Olweus walk-throughs per month on the Olweus Tracker. The Olweus Tracker is a link that you will find
under MY SISD under MY Tools. The link is user friendly and easy to follow. All campus administrators will have
access to their campus. Administrators will be able to upload their Olweus Workbook, their list of Olweus
Bullying Prevention Coordinating Committee (BPCC) members, document their kick-off event and any
Olweus meetings held.
Another major change is that the District will no longer be administering the Olweus Student Questionnaires
every year. Surveys will now be done biannually. This year we are including some challenges for the
campuses so that we can motivate the students on bullying prevention. Winners of these challenges will be
recognized during the October Board Meeting. Please encourage your teachers to get the students excited
in participating in the competitions designated for your particular campuses (elementary, middle schools and
high schools). Please get the students started In September on the challenges so you can submit your
campus first place winner by October 7, 2016 to State and Federal Programs. Judges will review all entries
and determine the district winners.
