APRIL 2017LPS MONTHLY NEWSLETTER

Dear LPS Community, It gives me great pleasure to reignite our LPS newsletter!  Spring is a season ofrenewal and here at LPS we are taking that as an opportunity to refresh ourcommitment to sharing our work and to raising awareness of the incrediblestudents and staff across our network of schools.  

 This year, we have revamped our mission, received accolades for our EnglishLanguage Arts achievements, and are renewing our charters in Oakland andRichmond.  We have initiated a Maker Lab in Hayward and increased the numberof students in our unique partnership with Merritt Community College, creating abetter pathway for the transition from high school to college. We are strengtheningour partnerships with districts and affirming our commitment to solving some ofeducation’s most complex problems so that all students benefit.

 Just a couple of weeks ago, I returned from a cross­cultural trip to Indonesia whereI helped a college develop its English Language credential program. I also sawfirsthand their amazing work using restorative practices and youth empowerment tobuild trust between Muslim and Christian communities.  This gave me an entirelynew perspective on these approaches, which we also use at LPS, and I amexploring ways to learn from each other and connect our programs.  During thattrip, I also co­authored an opinion piece with LPS Advisor Gary Yee on bridging thecharter ­ district divide in Oakland. Overall, there is so much to celebrate here atLPS and we embrace every opportunity to improve our work for our students andtheir families.   

We look forward to staying in touch with you each month and hope that together wecan make real our vision of educational equity.
