The commissioning of Peter

Chapter 21 from the Gospel of John:• Peter and others are fishing and catch nothing.• Jesus arrives in the morning. His third visit to His

disciples after rising from the dead.• Jesus directs them to cast their net on the right-

hand side of the boat.• They fill their net (catch 153 fish)• Jesus invites them to join Him for breakfast.

Jesus speaks to Peter

• Jesus asks Peter three times “Do you Love Me?

• All three times Peter answers “Yes Lord.”

• Jesus directs him to:– Tend My lambs– Shepherd My sheep– Tend My sheep

Was Jesus speaking to Peter as:

• A repentant sinner (he had denied Jesus three times on Good Friday)?

• The leader of His church?

• A follower about to take on a leadership position?

Page 5: Leadership: Tend My Sheep

Yes, yes, and yes!

• Jesus could have been addressing Peter in all three ways.

• For this discussion let’s focus on the prospect that Jesus was speaking to Peter as a Christian in a leadership role.

• What does it mean to us that Jesus was speaking to Peter as a follower taking on a leadership position?

What does that look like in the marketplace?

• Do these directives apply to our business leadership roles?

• What’s the “heavenly standard” for tending to His sheep?– Matthew 5:21-24 – Standard is set in the heart, not the law– New Commandment, John 13:34-35– Matthew 5:16

Page 8: Leadership: Tend My Sheep

• How can we aspire to the “heavenly standard” for tending to His sheep?– Brainstorm some actions we can take.– What areas of your business are affected?

Summary

• Jesus could have been speaking to each of us in His conversation with Peter.

• The world doesn’t teach us to “tend His sheep” in our roles as business leaders.

• A selfless, unconditional love is what Jesus asks us to give to each other.

• When we do so, others will see our works and glorify our “Father who is in heaven.”
