Geography Professor’sResearch Impacts BusinessSergio Rey, Geography professor, is conducting research on the economicstructure of leading industrial clusters in the San Diego region. Industry clus-ters are groups of interdependent firms and industries that are engines ofregional economic growth. Although the concept of clusters has gained wide-spread acceptance in regional economic development circles, there are fewstandards to identify a region’s key clusters or analyze the structure of regionalclusters. The project involves compiling international and interregional tradedata to analyze the San Diego regional economy.

This research addresses this situation in two ways. The first is to design a newstandardized approach to identify industrial clusters in a regional economy.Recent advances in optimization research allows Rey to develop new network-based algorithms to efficiently identify a region’s clusters. This newapproach views industries and their linkages by defining a cluster as a networkproviding better visualization of a cluster’s supply and product chains. Theassociated measures will allow the identification of potential market nichesand can be used to guide business development strategies.

Secondly, the research will explore the importance of trade to each of theregion’s clusters. Since regional economies are more open than nationaleconomies, trade takes on greater significance on the impact of a region’seconomy. Moreover, distinguishing between international trade (i.e., tradebetween San Diego and Singapore) and domestic trade (i.e., trade betweenSan Diego and Chicago), becomes critical in understanding a cluster’sstructure and function.

Maribel Franco is a familiar friendly face to all our InternationalBusiness students who study abroad in Spain, France, Germany,Italy, Portugal, Russia, China, Japan or Taiwan as she is the advisorfor these students during their semester of studying abroad. Sheactually begins orienting students the semester before they studyabroad by assisting in the selection of an overseas campus, prepa-

ration of applications to the foreign university, providing students with infor-mation about visas and travel suggestions.

While students are abroad, Maribel assists them in the selection of classes, provides information on housing, financial aid and other daily living issuesthrough the foreign campus advisor. When students return she then receivesthe foreign transcripts and follows through with SDSU to ensure the studentreceives the proper credit for their foreign course work. Her latest project isto develop an exchange agreement with a university in an Arabic speakingcountry. This effort is requiring some ingenuity and resourceful thinking.

Maribel has been with SDSU’s International Business Program for three years. She graduated from SDSU with a degree in Public Administration and is put-ting some international education experience together with her academictraining. She is the proud parent of two young boys, Alex and Giovanni, whokeep her busy in her time away from campus.

IB Program Spotlight

During the summer after mysophomore year, I embarkedon an eye-opening eight weektrip through fifteen Europeancountries that made me realizehow little I really knew aboutthe world, let alone interna-tional business. When classesstarted the following semester,I was ready to fill this mentalvoid with everything that myprofessors had to offer.

Dr. Mehdi Salehizadeh, who bats 1000 whenteaching international finance, motivated meto put my newly developed passion forInternational Business into practice. Duringthat semester, I started studying Russian asa way to expand my career possibilities. Thanks to Dr. Daria Shembel’s exceptionalteaching abilities, I was ready to do an internship in Russiaafter just two of her introductory courses.

Renatte Adler, the IB internship advisor, helped makemy desire to go to Russia a reality. A few months afterapproaching Dr. Adler, I was on a plane heading to Moscowto start my internship with the Russian Chamber ofCommerce. My experiences in Russia made me realize thatInternational Business is not just a major. I became con-vinced that international business is the underlying forceof the great wave of change that is being felt in everycorner of the world.

This realization was put to the test when I returned to SDSUto face Massoud Saghafi and his global marketing class. Dr.Saghafi’s class felt more like a consulting project for an inter-national company than an upper division university course.I am quite thankful for this opportunity and believe that thisis how most business education should be. By the end ofthe semester I had a much clearer vision of what will beexpected of IB graduates in my soon-to-be professional life.

Today I’m doing my final semester abroad at Universidadeda Coruna in Spain. Here I have had the opportunity tomake great connections with other international studentsand professors. It is ironic that the final chapter of my edu-cation is taking place in the same place where my passionfor International Business was sparked.

It should be noted that it is only the first part of my “formaleducation” that is coming to an end. I realize pursuing acareer in International Business requires continuous learn-ing. I plan to continue studying Spanish, Russian, andMandarin as well as earn my MBA degree. I thank everyoneat SDSU’s International Business Program for giving me theessential tools needed to make my first step into the work-ing world with confidence.
