Twenty-five years ago, Montgomery Countylooked very different. The population was

smaller and much less ethnically diverse than itis today and spoke many less languages. Today,we’re a County of over a million people. We’rea majority minority County with people fromalmost every country on earth.

Twenty-five years ago, Leadership Mont-gomery (LM) was a seed of an idea. It took ninemonths from the conception of the program tothe “birth” of the Inaugural Class. Within a fewyears, the LM family grew to include YouthLM for high school students, then the InsideMontgomery one-day executive program. A

few years later came Senior LM for people 55 and over. The newest additionis Emerging Leaders for young professionals 25-35, which will begin in the fall.

So far, over 2,000 people have graduated from one of the popular LMprograms. Participants come from all walks of life. What makes LM unique isthat the Core program, the largest and best known one, serves business, publicsector and nonprofit, compared to the other organizations serving the County.

Core participants have included elected officials from the State Senate andHouse, County Council, State’s Attorney, Board of Education, and judges.Public servants have included the superintendent of schools, college presidents, police chief, fire chief, and department heads.

Business leaders have come frommost major corporations and have includedCEOs and key leaders from both big and small business, as well as thechambers of commerce.

The nonprofit sector has been well represented in LM by its CEOs andExecutive Directors.

The beauty of LM is that participants have come from such diverse fieldsas arts and banking to transportation and utilities. The diversity is alsogeographic, gender, ethnic, age and economic, thus providing experiencesparticipants would likely never have gotten anywhere else.

For me, this has been a labor of love. While I expected to see people learnabout County issues and about their own leadership, I did not expect to seethe number of people whose lives were transformed by their LM experiences. That has been truly amazing.

LM is about community trusteeship, so it gives me great joy to see ourgraduates serving on hundreds of public and nonprofit boards, committees andcommissions. Their service makes our community a better place to live, workand raise our families.

In honor of our Silver Anniversary, LM has challenged each of our graduateclasses to come up with one Good Deed to be carried out as a group duringthe course of this year. The outcomes of the 25 Good Deeds Challenge are atestament to the tremendous impact that LMMembers have had and continueto have inMontgomery County every day while also demonstrating the diverserange of issues that graduates generously support with their service.

Twenty-five years has gone by amazingly fast. I’m confident that theorganization will continue to be an important part of the fabric of life in ourgreat County.

n CORE PROGRAM

Creating a Community of PurposeProgram Sponsor:

KNOWLEDGE... SERVICE...

CONTACTS...COMMITMENT.

These are just a few words that LeadershipMontgomery Members, graduates of the9-month program, use when asked to describewhat the Leadership Montgomery experiencemeant to them.

Leadership Montgomery is a communityleadership and development organization, aswell as a network coalition with core valuesof integrity, leadership, passion, relationships, service and diversity. “When someone thinksof community leaders in MontgomeryCounty, we want them to think of LeadershipMontgomery,” says CEO and founder EstherNewman.

Since its inception in 1989, LeadershipMontgomery has focused its eight monthlyday-long sessions on issues like publicsafety, transportation, education, diversity, communities, State and County government, arts and creativity. Sessions are enriched bypresentations from a wealth of communityexperts who share their knowledge and viewson various topics.

The following pictures and epiphanies give aglimpse into the 2014 class’ favorite sessions.

The first session for the 25th Anniversary Class of Leadership Montgomery in October was a home run (homage to our fantastic tour guide Glenn Orlin(‘95)! After learning about the history of Montgomery County, including the most extraordinary story told by Tony Cohen (’05) - pictured with Russ Hamill(’14) - who described his ongoing efforts to make the underground railroad come to life for visitors at the Button Farm Living History Center. We witnessedthe County’s commitment to a healthy and inclusive community (Red Wiggler Farm) and the complex process of waste management (Resource RecoveryFacility). Many of us were surprised how much we didn’t know about this great County of ours. Who knew that Germantown and Boyds were onceconsidered resort locations? Marilyn Balcombe’s (’00) comments about positive leadership and its effect on civic life and positive social change remindedus again of the responsibility we now have as class participants. At our last stop, Stew Edelstein (’03) talked about the impact of the development andongoing expansion of The Universities at Shady Grove on access and availability for all students in Montgomery County. When we finally stopped askingquestions and ended the day, we felt exhausted and invigorated at once and we all agreed that …..just when we think it can’t get any better at LM, it does!– Sheila Cahill (’14), Director, The Foundation School of Montgomery County

The session facilitator, Sean Looney, Vice President of Comcast State GovernmentAffairs, offered a major theme for our day in Annapolis in February: “Get engaged”in your state legislature. Awareness, knowledge and involvement create a favorableoutcome, which our lobbyist panel told us can mean killing bills (“putting it in thedrawer”) rather than creating legislation. In either case, “You’re at the table oryou’re on the menu” - i.e., get engaged or risk the consequences. “What mattersis relationships” according to Delegate Anne Kaiser (’05), who noted that the realdebates on legislation happen in committee before reaching the legislative floor.“Nothing is easy; what matters are relationships.” She likened the House of Delegatesto “middle school,” which struck me as perhaps an uncomfortable truth about certainaspects of leadership. Sean Looney also mentioned more than once that effectivelegislators have to be well-liked enough by their peers to be persuasive or just to getan attentive audience. With so many bills floating around, and with our legislatorsworking other jobs for 9 months a year, how does anything get accomplished? Aswe moved through hearing rooms and saw testimony in action, we got a feel forhow legislators are, or aren’t, persuaded. Senator Richard Madaleno (’10) advisedus to “Give data, tell a story and make it real” and to be aware of the approximately90 seconds you have to make your point. He said his own role is “to understand hisconstituents, vote his conscience, and be able to explain his rationale.” Success oftencomes down to who has the power and how the “one-on-one“ plays out (back tothat relationship theme). And with a majority of the Maryland Senate age 65 or older,it seems “the seniors are running the show.” It also helps to be from MontgomeryCounty, which provides approximately 25% of state revenue and has a highly capabledelegation to represent us. The day at the state capital, was another eye-opening LMexperience. -- Bonnie A. Beavers (’14), Partner, Kleinfeld, Kaplan & Becker, LLP

“Eye-opening.” “Inspiring.” “Humbling” “Cool!” These are just a few of the words that program participants used to describe their experiences atthe Public Safety and Criminal Justice session in November. The day started at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility, where Warden RobGreen (’07) made an impassioned and impressive case for the excellent services our correctional system provides, both for the inmates and thecommunity. A tour of the facility followed and we had the opportunity to talk directly with inmates to learn about their experiences both before andduring incarceration, as well as their expectations upon release. At the afternoon location, the Public Safety Training Academy, Police Chief Tom Manger (’06) gave an overview of policing in the County andFire Chief Steve Lohr talked about some of the future challenges facing emergency services. Police and Fire and Rescue instructors gave usan afternoon full of hands-on public safety experiences. We learned that the new CPR guidelines involve grooving to the beat of “Stayin’ Alive”and we got to see (but not feel!) a Taser in action. We tried out techniques for searching and clearing a building looking for a hostile and armedindividual, and yours truly did not survive a traffic stop gone badly during the “Shoot/Don’t Shoot” simulation exercise. We rode up 65 feet intothe air in the bucket of a ladder truck and either faced our fear of heights, or enjoyed the view, or maybe both. Some of us tried the exhaustingseries of 8 tasks firefighter candidates have to perform in less than 10 minutes, 20 seconds, while wearing weighted vests to simulate their heavyequipment, and the results left few (if any) of us thinking we should quit our day jobs. The day gave us true appreciation of the kind of training andskills our public safety personnel have, as well as the complex situations and decisions they face in their day to day work. – Essie McGuire (‘14),Senior Legislative Analyst, Montgomery County Council Central Staff

“A Vibrant Community Starts with the …the ARTS” was the title of the Maysession. The day started out with a unique treat, a performance by mime MarkJaster, which was intended to warm us up to a series of activities that revolvedaround our major theme of the day, finding out how creativity enhances leadership.Bonnie Fogel (’95), Executive Director and Founder of Imagination Stage, explained why creative thinkers are assets in the workplace. She went on todescribe how her peers and co-workers describe her creativity in the workplace to“create a creativity habit of mind.” The class took the Torrance test by Dr. Ellis PaulTorrance, and we’ll find out how we scored on originality, empathy, storytelling, humor, and expressiveness. Suzan Jenkins (’13), CEO of the Arts and HumanitiesCouncil of Montgomery County, offered words of wisdom that focused on “arts asan inviting community” that explained how we need to bring everything together.Arts are an economic driver for the County, and we need to offer more creativeplace making to enhance the quality of life in Montgomery County. The classdiscussed the nighttime economy within the County and what most people doafter seeing a play or production. Do you go out after for drinks and dinner or doyou go home? There is a struggle within the County for small business to stayopen and offer late night activities for people after a show or on a weekend. TheCounty is fighting a battle that has them losing people to other counties and statesfor late night activities, such as U street in the District or Arlington. Gratitude wasa final focal point within the session as the class discussed how important it isto stop and take a moment to reflect on the value someone adds to our life andthank them for the excellence that they have shown. Gratitude in Leadership is the“norm” and we need to recognize excellence. – Brian Pettit (’14), Vice President,Pettit Companies

Being a life-long County resident and business owner, I learned at the Januarysession about the complex interrelationship between the government that weentrust to carefully invest our tax dollars and the community in general whichprovides the means for this support. During the presentations about the County’sbudget and expenditures, the regional strengths and understanding how wedo and in some cases “don’t” leverage these resources, our leadership groupcame to an important conclusion: We need to educate our elected officials aboutthe challenges of expanding our tax basis and stress the importance of makingour County more business friendly. The following speakers used highly tailoredperspective and the data to back up key assumptions to meet the messaging:Keith Levchenko (’08), Senior Legislative Analyst for Montgomery CountyCouncil Central Staff; James C. Dinegar, CAE, President and CEO at the GreaterWashington Board of Trade; Steve Silverman, Director of Montgomery CountyDepartment of Economic Development; Erica A. Leatham, Esq. (’09), OfCounsel at Ballard Spahr, LLP; Christopher T. Jones, President of BMC PropertyGroup; and Holly Sears Sullivan President of Montgomery Business DevelopmentCorporation. –Michael D. Priddy (’14), CEO, Intervise

The December session, “Education: 21st CenturySuccess,” began with a talk by Montgomery CountyPublic Schools Superintendent Dr. Joshua Starr (‘13),who articulated simply, powerfully, and with passion thechallenges being faced in an educational system that isno longer about “no child left behind” and testing thatdoes not necessarily lead to learning. We also heard anamazing and inspiring presentation by English teacherBrett Morales. When he was confronted with the fact that60% of male Hispanics will drop out before their senioryear, he went to his students and asked the question:What can we do to change this unacceptable rate? Solast year a group called PODER (power in Spanish) wasformed and now has 30 plus students who all raised theiracademic performance and are showing an example totheir peers. Dr. DeRionne P. Pollard (’12), President ofMontgomery College, addressed with passion, humor, and courageous honesty the transformational power ofcommunity colleges, the narrative of Montgomery Countyversus the reality of the County, and the need for a shift inthe “leadership paradigm.” The day was one of constantlearnings about MCPS and the challenges educationin general faces in today’s world, “aha moments,”and honest conversations. — Jeff Miller (’14), Owner,ActionCOACH Business Coaching

Special 25th Anniversary Awardsby Elizabeth Jackson-D’Ambrosi

Leadership Montgomery is marking its quarter century of service by presenting three awards to organizations workingto make Montgomery County a better place to live and work. The 25th Anniversary Business Award, sponsored byPepco, goes to Adventist HealthCare; the Nonprofit Award goes to Imagination Stage; and the Public Sector Award, sponsored by Jeffrey Slavin and the Sanford and Doris Slavin Foundation, goes to Washington Suburban SanitaryCommission.

“These organizations exemplify the community impact that Leadership Montgomery strives to build through ourprograms to create transformational leaders,” said CEO and Founder Esther Newman. The criteria included visionary thinking, innovation, courage, and integrity.

Adventist HealthCare, Montgomery County’s firstand largest health system, is one of the largest employers inMaryland. Its facilities and programs serve the communitywith more than 600,000 encounters each year, and itremains the largest provider of charity care and communitybenefit in Montgomery County. In this era of health carereform, health systems are asked to not only providequality and compassionate care inside their hospitals, butalso to encourage people to stay healthy and to providecommunities with resources that encourage a culture ofwellness. Adventist HealthCare is already ahead of the curvedue in large part to its more than 100-year history basedupon the principles of wellness.

“Our mission is to improve the health of people andcommunities through the high-quality services in ourhospitals and by bringing health programs to wherepeople live and work,” saidMarcos Pesquera (’09),Executive Director of Adventist HealthCare’s Centerfor Health Equity and Wellness. Pesquera added thatAdventist HealthCare is also committed to supporting andpartnering with community-based organizations that arealigned with its mission. In the fall of 2013, Shady GroveAdventist Aquilino Cancer Center, Montgomery County’sfirst freestanding, comprehensive cancer center, opened inRockville.

Newman notes that health is at the core ofWashingtonSuburban Sanitary Commission’s (WSSC) mission too, though people don’t often think about the fact that cleanwater and sanitation systems are the first line of defenseagainst disease.

WSSC is a bi-county government agency providingwater and wastewater services to the 1.8 million residentsof Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. Its FY’14budget is approaching $1.5 billion, of which more than90% comes from ratepayers. “I want to thank LeadershipMontgomery for showing confidence in what we are doinghere at WSSC,” said General Manager/CEO Jerry N.Johnson. “We are well into our strategic plan to improveour aging infrastructure and technology capabilities. Wehave done this with cost awareness and our customers inmind.” Johnson adds, “We have been transparent withour customers, showing that higher rates are necessary forinvestment in a resource that is too often taken for grantedbecause water is delivered almost invisibly.”

WSSC is taking on and meeting new challenges andliving by its values – Accountability; Integrity and Respect;Excellence; Individual Initiative; Environmental Stewardship;and Cost Awareness – all this and they’ve never had adrinking water violation in their 95-year history.

Imagination Stage inspires creativity through theatreand arts education programs that nurture, challenge, and empower young people, regardless of their physical, cognitive, or financial status. In what Montgomery CountyPublic Schools (MCPS) Superintendent Joshua Starr (’13)calls a “visionary plan” and an “extraordinary partnership,“Imagination Stage and MCPS are working together toconnect student learning with the arts and build critical21st century skills. With funding from the Jim and CarolTrawick Foundation, IStage teamed up with Glen EchoPark, The Puppet Company and Ivymount School todevelop after school and summer camp opportunities formiddle school children on the autism spectrum. “We believethat creativity-imagination-innovation are essential aspectsof a child’s life and that without sustained engagement inthe arts a child will lack essential aspects of the humancondition: namely, emotional health, empathy, divergentthinking and innovative habits of mind. ImaginationStage represents a lab where these ideas and practices areengendered and practiced on a daily basis almost everyday of the year. Imagination Stage then represents anessential cog in the wheel of our great Montgomery Countycommunity representing a true value to all citizen souls, butespecially, to the children and youth,” said Bonnie Fogel(’95), Founder and Executive Director.
