Health in the PastEarly 1800’s through early 1900’s the leading cause of death was Infectious Diseases.

Health Today

Today most health problems in the U.S. are related to the way we live or Lifestyle Diseases.

Lifestyle Disease- a disease caused partly by unhealthy behaviors and partly by other factors.

Health Risk Factors

Risk Factor- Anything that increases the likelihood of injury, disease, or other health problems.

Controllable Risk Factors

Controllable Risk Factor- risk factors that you can do something about. They can be controlled by your behavior.

Uncontrollable Risk Factors

Uncontrollable Risk Factors-Ones that can’t be changed no matter what actions are taken.

Example-Age, Race Gender, Heredity

Six Health Risk Behaviors

1. Sedentary Lifestyle- Not taking part in regular physical activity. Even though not overweight, still at risk for health problems.

2. Alcohol and Other Drugs- Liver disease, certain types of cancer, heart disease, and brain damage. Also a major factor in car accidents, fights, depression, suicide, and mental disorders.

3. Sexual Activity- Activity outside of marriage puts people at risk for health problems, such as pregnancy, STD’s, and HIV.

4. Behaviors that cause injuries- Motor vehicle accidents, murder, and suicide. Not wearing a seatbelt leads to automotive injuries.

5. Tobacco Use- Smoking is the single leading cause of preventable death in the United States.

6. Poor Eating Habits- Eating habits can either increase, or lower your chances of developing some diseases. Example diabetes and heart disease.
