Our work with executives at
global 500 companies and leading
organizations focuses on their most
challenging issues and helps them
build high performance
capabilities for improvement
and change.
Among our clients:
oday, Lean and Lean Six Sigma are recognized as major creators of business value. Because of Lean and Lean Six Sigma,
quality became exciting again. While today at the forefront of business process improvement, Rath & Strong’s pioneering
efforts in Lean and Six Sigma have led to new tools and methodologies that were created and improved over the last
century, for use in a rigorous, fact-based, comprehensive, and structured way driven by the CEO, achieving profound
results. Even the financial analysts finally understand that it wasn’t just technology that drove productivity improvements
in the United States since the 1990s; it was quality improvements through implementation of Six Sigma and Lean
methodologies that helped transform some of our largest and most prestigious companies.
Rath & Strong pioneered Lean by helping bring this powerful concept to the United States in the 1960s and ‘70s, when
Rath & Strong consultants Arnold O. Putnam and Henry Parker introduced work cells modeled after the Toyota Production
System. At Motorola in the 1970s, our esteem colleague Dorian Shainin and other Rath & Strong consultants worked with
Bill Smith, under the direction of Bob Galvin, as Motorola first began developing what is today called Six Sigma. In
the 1980s, Rath & Strong consultants led pioneering work in the introduction of Just-in-Time and its integration with
behavioral areas, and led in the integration of Lean and Process Redesign with Quality — what is now commonly referred
to as Lean Six Sigma. Today, Rath & Strong leads the field globally.
In the next stage, leading organizations will leverage Lean and Lean Six Sigma as sources of innovation and organic
growth. In fact, process innovation may be even more important for building competitive advantage and generating growth
than any “big bang” innovation, as new sources of innovation emerge from global relationships and networks.
The massive power of Asia’s giants is changing the global game. Ironically, both the West and Asian economies are
at the same point: If they don’t innovate, they won’t continue to prosper. Countries are moving up the Value Chain at a
rapidity never before seen. The benefits are great, and so are the disruptions. The consensus is the U.S. must continue to
invent new industries to stay ahead, and evolve with partners in the new global economic order. China and India must deal
with banking system, financial processes, infrastructure, and other instabilities to secure their futures. The changes and the
challenges are seismic.
The tools of operations improvement are also having a big impact in the private equity arena as financial engineering is
no longer enough to provide outsized returns to that industry. It requires roll-up-your-sleeves operational improvements to
lean the business.
Rigor and investment are required to generate, capture, develop, and qualify new ideas. Our long experience has
proven that change that sticks requires a multi-dimensional approach that leverages the linkages between culture,
customer, process, and leadership. Cross-functional and cross-boundary process improvement creates a highly fertile
environment for cross-fertilization and unleashes energy that reaps big returns. The bottom line is that we achieve
results with our clients not just for today, but also so that they can independently carry forward the benefits of their work
with us tomorrow. Rath & Strong is uniquely positioned through its history of leadership and innovation, and as today’s
leading global provider of world-class Lean and Lean Six Sigma solutions, to help leaders capitalize on the next stages of
change.

Innovation and Results
Rath & Strong has been helping companies
by enhancing operations, leadership, culture,
and customer connection for over 70 years,
long before most other consulting firms even
existed. Since our founding in 1935,
Rath & Strong has achieved a proud history
of pioneering innovation.
We introduced revolutionary advances in
business process improvement and led in
integrating the technical and behavioral
sides of change. Among its achievements,
Rath & Strong first introduced Lean from
Japan and led in the development of Lean
principles and tools and in statistical-based
process improvement, advances indispens-
able to the development of Six Sigma, Lean,
and Lean Six Sigma.
Today, we are the leading global provider of
Lean Six Sigma and Six Sigma solutions.
RATH & STRONG

Rath & Strong offers a comprehensive philosophy and arsenal of methods and tools built
on over 75 years of success. We calibrate and optimize this multi-dimensional — and
multi-disciplinary — approach in each engagement to achieve real results.
A History of Firsts
By the 1970s, Rath &Strong had already
introduced revolutionary insights and tools
in statistical-based quality improvement that
led to Six Sigma at Motorola. Very early on, we
also recognized the need to tackle the human
side of change if change efforts were to be
sustainable. By the mid-1970s, Rath & Strong
had done ground breaking work in leadership,
culture, and customer connection.
In the early 1980s, Rath & Strong studied
Japanese methods and recognized in JIT
— the forerunner of Lean — a true multi-
disciplinary approach. The JIT Breakthrough,
written by Rath & Strong, was a milestone in
bringing Japanese-style business process
improvement techniques to U.S. companies.
Rath & Strong became the leader in JIT and
in the development of Lean principles and
implementation, and advanced Lean beyond
the original Japanese insights. Extending
these breakthroughs, Rath & Strong was the
first to apply Lean to service environments
and to transactional, service, and office
processes. In fact, in GE Capital’s Six Sigma
launch, we applied innovative Lean principles
to get the waste and work out of critical
processes, long before others used the two
methodologies synergistically.
Rath & Strong led in “statistical engineer-
ing” (later called “variation research”), which
became the basis for Six Sigma.
Rath & Strong’s esteemed colleague Dorian
Shainin innovated industrial problem-
solving and statistical methodologies such
as Advanced Diagnostic Tools and Planned
Experimentation. These advances were
integral to the development of leading-
edge quality tools such as “Pre Control” and
“Random Balance.”
Rath & Strong is proud to have helped invent
Six Sigma at Motorola, to have helped apply
Six Sigma to services for the first time across
the board at GE Capital, and to have led in the
integration of Lean and Six Sigma at leading
companies worldwide.
Rath & Strong pioneered integrating the technical and human sides of change.
Over 70 years of experience tell us that this multi-dimensional approach
achieves breakthrough change with lasting results.
Global Experience and Resources
Rath & Strong has deep experience in
developing and deploying programs globally,
and provides consultants, materials, and
trainers in a wide variety of languages
including German, French, Italian, Spanish,
Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.

Kingdom, and the United States, we offer a

RATH & STRONG Your Partners in Performance and Growth
A Multi-Dimensional Approach
Rath & Strong’s approach is distinctive. More
com prehensive. More focused on leadership,
change management, people and influence
skills — the keys to achieving growth
and making change really work.
Our leadership development, coaching, and
change management approaches always
tie specific plans to business imperatives.
We coach for action and operationalize
the changes to be made. Our proprietary
methodologies enable the organization to
become rapidly self-sufficient. Because the
challenges organizations face cannot be
neatly compartmentalized, we believe that
change management strategies are essential.
Attention to methods, tools, and cost
savings is, of course, necessary for
successful rollouts. However, gaining the
commitment of a wide variety of
stakeholders, and addressing behavioral and
culture issues are also necessary for high
performance.
Rath & Strong melds the technical,
managerial, and behavioral in a uniquely
dynamic approach with high impact.
In the end, for people to see a direct
relationship between what they do and
its value to the organization, it’s clear that
they need to understand what outstanding
performance looks like and be given the
tools, skills, and rewards to achieve it.
We help leaders create the processes and
structures that move the organization rapidly
in the right direction, and in ways that
solidify the gains.
Forces of disruption now threaten
established companies from every side.
The days of slow change are long gone.
Survival and success go to competitors
who move quickly, turn in solid
performance in the short term,
and position themselves for growth,
again and again.
4
The leverage is in the linkage between leadership, culture, customer, and process.
Our work has proven that focusing on these four key leverage points and their
interconnectedness allows organizations to chart new competitive opportunities,
avoid superficial solutions, and create “change that sticks.”
Leadership
Customer
Process Culture
We achieve results with the client, not just for
today’s project but for the benefits they can
independently carry forward from their work
with us.
The Way We Work
While hot management trends come
and go, the need to show quantifiable
improvement never diminishes. What counts
are bottom-line results and developing
ongoing capacity for change and growth.
Our long history is based on years of
getting results for our clients — many of the
world’s most successful organizations. But
the real difference lies in our people, our
approach, and how we work with you.
We partner with our clients in programs and
initiatives that drive clear business objectives.
We leverage our extensive background in
helping leaders implement and navigate
change, for our long experience proves the
commitment of leaders is the chief way to
stack the odds in favor of success.
In all aspects of our work we adopt a
transparent, highly collaborative style
aimed at sharing knowledge and
techniques in a way that creates sustainable
improvement. The last thing we want is to
become another layer of management. Rath
& Strong’s role is to guide, coach, teach,
and provide tools and disciplines — then
phase out, leaving both much stronger
individual performers and a much stronger
organization.
Savvy Business Partners
Our consultants, the people who will work
directly with you, have had experience
operating businesses, P&L responsibility,
and distinguished careers. They also have
superior academic credentials, and many
are leading experts in their fields. We staff
our engagements with these seasoned
consultants — people with the battle scars
and wisdom that come only from practical
experience. Rath & Strong consultants have
sat on your side of the table. They are not
simply theorists or analysts. They are flexible
pragmatists who know what works. That is
why you see impressive bottom line results
