Introduction

1. What makes the winners of the top leagues so successful? 2. Why did the winner of the London Marathon select the

tactics to run the race in that specific way?

What makes a successful leader?

What do these coaches / leaders have in common?

They all have certain defining attributes

What is an attribute?

‘A quality or feature regarded as a characteristic or inherent part of

someone or something’

What are these attributes?

Skills = the ability to do something well; have expertise, demonstrate it well and successfully. Qualities = a distinctive attribute or characteristic possessed by someone.

Responsibilities = a duty to deal with / be responsible for something or of having control over someone.

What do these mean – can you define them?

In your table groups on the A3 paper group the following into the 3 groups above: Professional conduct, Organisation of equipment, Use of language, Equality Insurance, Child protection, Evaluation Appearance, Enthusiasm, Confidence Target setting,

Leadership styles, Motivation, Humor, Personality Health and safety, Communication Legal obligations, Ethics & Values, Rules & regulations. Knowledge Activity structure,

Lesson task

Choose 2 coaches from the world of sport (these can be PE teacher) and do the following in your exercise books / work sheet:1. List / describe ALL the skills, qualities and

responsibilities of EACH coach you have chosen2. Explain how each of your 2 coaches

demonstrates the skills, qualities and responsibilities in being an effective coach.

3. Evaluate / compare & contrast the 2 coaches chosen saying why they are good/bad/similar/ different coaches against each other and who is the best between the 2.

Task 1 - Scenario

You are working in a small, but developing, coaching company called ‘Coaches R us’.

You have contacted the MK News to discuss how to develop interest in volunteering in sports leadership.

The editor Miss Green has asked you to write 2

articles that explores the requirements of becoming a successful sports leader, using examples of successful

sports leaders to demonstrate attributes and responsibilities required.

 

Task 1 – News paper article

Produce 2 news paper article which looks do the following:Article 11 P1 = Describe what the skills, qualities and responsibilities of an effective coach are M1 = Explain what the skills, qualities and responsibilities of an

effective coach are using sports examples.

Article 2 P2 = Describe / list the skills, qualities and responsibilities of 2

sports coaches from the world of sport. M2 = Explain how each of your 2 coaches demonstrates the

skills, qualities and responsibilities in being an effective coach. D1 = Evaluate / compare & contrast the 2 coaches chosen

saying why they are good/bad/similar/ different coaches against each other and who is the best between the 2.

TASK 1 deadline – Tuesday 29th April 2014 – session 2 – EN8

responsibilities of a good coach with sports E.G’s.

2. 2 coaches article – explain how each coach DEMONSTRATES each skill, quality, responsibility and then COMPARE the 2 coaches, WHY good, bad, better than other coach.
