Creating a Company Culture that Embraces Human Centered Design (Studio 5)

Presenter: Bill Druliner, GreenPath Financial Wellness

In recent years, there has been a revolution in the way that technology companies innovate. We have seen the fruit of these changes in the design process, with ever-improving technology such as the smartphone, same-day delivery services, and even the advent of the self-driving car! What many people don’t know is that one key to this innovation has been the advent of Design Thinking, also sometimes called Human Centered Design. Design Thinking is a set of tools for problem-solving and collaborating that place the end-user at the center of the process. Some of America’s leading companies focus on design -- and have consistently outperformed their peers. And, increasingly, the tools are being used by forward-thinking organizations that are interested in social change. During this session, we will provide an introduction to Design Thinking tools, as well as share how these tools can be transformative to the work of non-profit organizations!

Finding Home: A Resilience & Trauma-Informed Approach

Presenter: Bruce Thao, LIT Consulting

When we think of home, what comes to mind? People? Places? Memories? In our diverse society, individuals may have drastically different concepts of what “home” is, depending on the journeys they’ve traveled. For some, home is where we can relax and unwind. For others, home is a faraway place that we can never return to. Whether tumultuous or smooth, our journeys inform who we are and what and where we call home. In this session, we’ll explore concepts of resilience and historical trauma to gain greater understanding of how and why we define “home” the way we do, and how we can help others on their journeys to find home.

Bruce Thao is Founder & CEO of LIT Consulting – Lead. Inspire. Transform. Bruce has over a decade of experience working across diverse communities, industries and sectors. Bruce works with non-profits, government, academic institutions and foundations to assess and understand systems of oppression and diversity both within and outside of the workplace, and to craft strategies to co-create new ways of thinking and working towards equity. Prior to his consulting work, Bruce led a $1.5 million cross-sector racial equity initiative for MN Philanthropy Partners. He has also served as Director of Programs of a $10 million non-profit, driving national policy work, research, and capacity building programs for non-profits across the country.

Bruce holds an M.S. in Psychology from St. Joseph’s University and an M.A. and completion of all doctoral coursework in Social Welfare from the University of Chicago. He has been nationally recognized by Vice President Biden as an LGBTQ leader. Bruce is also a 2013 Bush Foundation Fellow, a 2014 White House Champion of Change, a 2016 Ron McKinley Philanthropy Fellow, a 2017 Aspen Institute Scholar, and was recognized as 2016 “Young Professional of the Year” by the Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce.
