Leading the way in the set-top box world
You decide the functionality…
ST has developed complete scalable
solutions targeted for low to high end
set-top box requirements. With our
silicon technology and your system
knowledge we can easily deliver
advanced multi-functional boxes for
all your needs. Starting from the basic
broadcast box, where price is a major
driving force, we have cost optimized
chipsets and two layer printed circuit
board (pcb) layouts. Moving to the
higher end boxes, we can add our
extensive in-house and third party
relationships to add middleware, trick
mode and DVD certified software. For
the whole home concept we can
provide a network approach where
each box can share the content and
functionality of all other boxes in the
network.

Web browsing
The OMEGA architecture provides a scalable solution for webbrowsing. An OMEGA stand-alone can be used for basic TVbrowsing and, with the addition of an STi5528, the box istransformed into a digital home entertainment platform capable ofsupporting interactive TV combined with broadband Internetcontent.
Voice-over-IP (VoIP)
Both home gateway and IP telephone applications connected byEthernet are served by the ST VoIP chip Stradivarius for IPtelephony, and the scalable STV0397 DSP co-processor. TheSTV0397 combined with a host such as the STV0396 orST40RA166 provides a scalable VoIP platform for gateways andbroadband applications with higher port density.
Other VoIP platforms are based on the Stradivarius STLC1502,the STw5093 voice band CODEC and the STE100P Ethernet PHYchip.
Advanced graphics
The advanced ‘GAMMA’ graphics engine includes a 2D graphicsprocessor with integrated colour format conversion, XY drawingand anti-flicker filtering to ensure superior browser performance.
For combined TV and web, GAMMA allows any four video andgraphics sources to be combined with background colour andcursor planes, taking the set-top box user experience to newheights of interactivity.
Home network
ST is developing a broad range of ICs for home networking, covering both wired and wireless standards, including Ethernet,HomePNA, Bluetooth, 802.11, and voice applications over IP orDSL.
The IAD/Home networking device family is designed to addvoice, home networking and Internet connectivity to consumerproducts. Based on ST ADSL technology, the first chipset of thefamily, Unicorn/Lipari, enables the development of broadbandmultiservice applications.

MPEG2 decoding
ST’s OMEGA STi5516 and STi5518 MPEG2 decoders lie at the coreof the set-top box. A common architecture throughout enablesscalability of both performance and functionality, enabling OEMs todevelop new, advanced profile set-top boxes, while capitalizing onexisting software investment and maintaining support for legacyapplications.
DVD
The same OMEGA architecture is used in DVD players with theSTi5519 and STi5580 derivatives, allowing OEMs to exploit multiplemarkets with the same OMEGA platform.
Personal video recording (PVR)
A hard disk drive connected directly to the OMEGA interfaceprovides a low-cost implementation of the personal video recorder. While all OMEGA variants support simple time shift recording, thetriple transport engine of the STi5514 enables enhancedfunctionality such as simultaneous multiple watch and record.Such advanced features enable broadcasters to deliver a richmedia spectrum to their viewing audience.
Camera
ST’s CMOS imaging technology enables a low-cost camera to beconnected directly to the set-top box. CMOS area image sensorscan be matched to co-processors to offer complete camerasolutions (QCIF/CIF/VGA CCIR656,USB, etc.) for many vision-basedapplications and services.
Audio
The set-top box decoders support multiple audio formats. Theseinclude Dolby Digital and MP3 decoding, as well as DolbyProLogic® and SRS TruSurround® post-processing. This allowsbox manufacturers to differentiate their products in the marketversus competitors offerings.

wide range of complementary devices
Digital consumer applications – and set-top boxes in particular – aredriving the demand for more flexible, more secure and enhancedperformance non-volatile memories. Benefiting from closerelationships with the world's leading set-top box manufacturers, SToffers a broad range of competitive solutions for the current andemerging generation of set-top boxes
Meeting the set-top box challenge with ST FlashWhen higher densities or advanced performances arerequired, the M58LWxxx family provides the solution. Theproducts are available in different versions, each of themoffering enhanced features. The M58LWxxxC family isalso available with additional security features, which makeit ideal for set-top box applications.
Flash and securityWithout these security features, hackers can change thecontent of Flash memory to get free access to the service. However, once a sector is locked with smart protection, thisis impossible - their only option is to remove and replacethe Flash memory. But the new memory won’t have thesame unique code as the original, so the service providersimply needs to compare the Flash code with the smartcardserial number. If these numbers are inconsistent with itsrecords, service will be denied.
Industry-standard Flash ST’s comprehensive range of Flash products offers densitiesfrom 1 to 64Mb, 3V and 5V single supply, or 3V dual-supply voltage, top and bottom boot block, access timesfrom 55 to 120ns, and in TSOP, SO, PLCC, TFBGApackages.
LightFlash™ familyThis is a dynamic product family with devices from 16 to64Mb, featuring a 3V power supply and 90ns access time, plus a standard Flash command set and pinouts. It is anapplication-oriented product family, focusing on systemperformance optimized for basic code storage.
Serial FlashThey are particularly well suited for small code storage(patches, model-specific codes). They feature high densityand high data-transfer rate, sequential read capability, lowpower consumption and a small low-cost 8-pin package.ST’s portfolio covers 1 to 16Mb, with a 2.7 to 3.6V supplyvoltage.
Serial EEPROMsOffered in a very small package, these are a cost-effectiveand flexible solutions for the storage of system and userparameters.
Used by the major set-top box manufacturers, thesedevices are easily upgradeable to higher densities. ST’scomplete range includes 1Kb to 1Mb products supportingI2C bus (most popular choice), 1 to 256Kb productssupporting SPI bus and 1 to 16Kb products withMICROWIRE® bus, with supply voltages from 1.8 to 5.5V.
ST custom solutions also offer the opportunity tocustomize the interface and associated protocol, the logiccircuitry, the access control and the memory partitioning.
EPROMSA complete range of products from 64Kb to 64Mb,including UV and OTP versions, available in 3V and 5Vversions.
FlexibleROM™ familyA new one-time programmable (OTP) family based on0.15mm process technology. With a portfolio coveringdensities from 16 to 128Mb, it is the ideal solution for set-top boxes, once the code is frozen.

Low noise blockDesigned for analog and digital satellite set-top box receivers, the LNBP families arevoltage regulators and interface ICs, specifically designed to provide power to the externalLNB down converter in an antenna, or to the multiswitch box with 13V/18V, 22kHz tonesignaling, and I2C bus standard interfacing.
Power supplyMost set-top boxes require up to 5 different voltages. The topology of power supplies whichmeet this requirement are either flyback converters for power in the range from 3 to100W, or forward converters. ST’s wide range of products is dedicated to power supplies which include our smart VIPer family, MOSFETs, line regulators, DC-DCconverters, voltage referencing, Schottky diodes and ultrafast rectifiers which meet with all power supply requirements.
Summary
The hardware reference designs are complemented by the established low level driver set, STAPI. This allowsthird party software houses to port either proprietary middleware application layers or open standard applications such as MHP and MHEG directly on to ST reference platforms. ST has worked with many thirdparties to be able to offer complete solutions while continuously reducing time to market.
Implemented with the most advanced digital silicon process technology available and meeting the need foreven smaller IC geometry, our chipsets’ cost/performance ratio allows the set-top box market to meet its verylow cost requirements for box materials and to rapidly grow in both the operator controlled and retail markets.
