PROGRAM CONTENT

As more seniors remain in their homes as long as possible, the transition to a care facility is occurring at more advanced ages. These older adults often exhibit symptoms of memory loss/dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Many health care providers, recognizing the increasing demand for memory care support services, have begun to convert portions of their traditional medical model skilled care or traditional assisted living buildings into a neighborhood model for memory support. This panel will illustrate recent design strategies to convert several traditional skilled care facilities and a wing of a traditional assisted living facility into innovative memory support neighborhoods. Directors of each of these sponsors will share the critical decisions leading to these conversions and the challenges and opportunities of construction and licensing, as well as issues of renovation within an operating facility.
