Rev. Dr. MJM Mahalingam, S.J., M.A., D.E.A., Ph.D. (France)
(Founder and Director, LEADS 2007-2012) BIRTH OF LEADS
After returning from France, Rev Dr Maria Joseph M. Mahalingam SJ joined Assistant Professor
in the Department of Sociology in June 2006. On January 10, 2007, Rev Dr B.Jeyaraj, SJ,
Rector, appointed Rev Dr MJM Mahalingam as the Dalit Coordinator. In the month of May, he
conducted Loyola Summer Camp 2007 getting some guidelines from his predecessor Rev Dr
Danis Ponnaiah SJ working in St Xavier‟s College, Palayamkottai. After the Summer Camp, he
started facilitating admission for Dalit students. During the admission process, he was meeting
these parents and students with difficulties since there was no space, computer and persons to
help him. Hence, he represented the matter to Rev Fr K.Amal, Rector, Rev. Fr Albert
Muthumalai, Principal and Rev Dr John Pragasam, Deputy Principal. After persistent requests
for office space from January 2007, a small room adjacent to the laboratory in the Chemistry
Block was given to Rev Dr MJM Mahalingam in June 2008 to meet the parents and the students
during admission. In June 2009, this space was taken for Vice-Principal, Shift-II office and Rev
Dr MJM Mahalingam was asked to locate another place for the Dalit Coordinator office. He
identified JS-13 room as the possible office space which was small and portioned. The first
portioned space was used by the papyrus club. As this space became uncomfortable to receive
students and work, Rev Dr Mahalingam requested Rev Dr Peter Xavier, Secretary to shift the
LEADS
(LOYOLA EMANCIPATORY ACTION FOR DALIT STUDENTS)
EADS
papyrus club to some other place. Fr Secretary conceded his request and made JS-13 as a full-
fledged office for Dalit Coordinator with all the necessary equipments. But there was no staff
and computer to make any serious follow up the admitted SC/ST students and to guide them for
good academic progress, spiritual and intellectual growth. Rev Dr MJM Mahalingam represented
to the Jesuit Management and to Fr A. Victor, SJ, Superior of Jesuit Chennai Mission during an
evaluation meeting.
Following the meetings of the officials of Jesuit Chennai Mission, in August 2009 Fr K.Amal,
Rector, asked me to draw a concrete action plan, time bound programmes, needed staff and
budget to follow up the SC/ST students so that their overall growth is assured. After a
meaningful discussion with Rev Fr Henry Jerome SJ, National Chaplin, AICUF, Rev Dr MJM
Mahalingam presented in the Jesuit community on Sept. 16, 2009 the vision, mission, objectives
and concrete and time bound programmes. He requested 5 staff and budget for all UG and PG
students for 5 years. The community unanimously approved this proposal. Thus, five staff
members with three computers started working in the Dalit Coordinator office. A core-group of
lay professors with Fr John Kumar and Fr Henry Jerome formed to assist the Dalit coordinator to
run the Dalit Coordinator office.
In the core-group meeting held in December 2009, Rev Dr MJM Mahalingam mooted the idea
that the Dalit Coordinator office could be christened as LOYOLA EMANCIPATORY
ACTION FOR DALIT STUDENTS (LEADS) so that it becomes as one of the service
institutes. The Jesuit Management approved this proposal. To make the activities of LEADS and
its office visible, a public function was organized on February 14, 2010 in Bertram Hall where
Hon‟ble Minister of Adi-Dravidar and Tribal Welfare, Tmt Tamilselvi was invited as the chief
guest and Dr Christudoss Gandhi IAS as the guest of honour. Thus, LEADS was solemnly
inaugurated by the Hon‟ble Minister of Adi-Dravidar Welfare, Tmt. A. Tamilarasi. Rev Fr
K.Amal, Rector blessed the LEADS office and declared open for the students.

HIGHLIGHTS 2010
LEADS, is two years old and has rendered praise-worthy service to the Poor and Dalit students.
This year we conducted programmes on: Memory enhancement Special English and Remedial
coaching classes, Time Management, Language, Orientation and workshop in GD, for students
who are about to join MBA in LIBA and other top Business Schools in India. These programmes
were conducted for the 1st year UG and 1st year PG students. These programmes were
conducted along with the regular programmes conducted in the first year such as: Hand-writing
improvement, motivation, Personality development, writing skills, Speaking skills, Self-
discovery, Type writing, Computer literacy.
Besides this, LEADS launched a special training programme for admission tests such as XAT /
MAT / CAT. A total of 46 students underwent this training since Sept.27, 2010..
Loyola College Note Books - an initiative of LEADS in June 2010 is being sold for the benefit
of the Poor and Dalit students in the beginning of each semester.
I am happy to note that many staffs and students responded positively in the signature campaign
conducted by LEADS office in support for the demand of Dalit Christians and Dalit Muslims as
„SC‟ status. Nearly 7000 loyolites signed in the memorandum which was later sent to the
President and the Prime Minister of India. Three top officials have acknowledged the receipt of
the memorandum. I hope that this initiative will bear fruit.
DR. B. R. AMBEDKAR feature film: LEADS organized a special show of the feature film
Babasaheb Dr. Ambedkar in Albert Theatre in Egmore with 50% of concessions in tickets for
students. 300 students, Professors and Jesuits participated in the programme. This film is highly
informative, educative, enlightening and inspiring about the life and mission of Dr
B.R.Ambedkar to liberate Dalits from the shackles of century old social oppression. At the
invitation of LEADS, many staff and students watched this movie. Some professors suggested
that LEADS could take initiative to screen this film inside Loyola College so that all students
and staff will have an opportunity to watch this film.
To pay tribute to „Babasaheb Dr. BR. Ambedkar’ for his dedicated service for the uplift of the
Dalits, LEADS is today organizing a function to commemorate his 120th
birth anniversary. On
that auspicious day, I was happy to make a booklet available which contains all relevant
information about LEADS. It highlights the commitment of the Jesuit Management of Loyola
College to empower the Poor and the marginalized through various programmes. On this day
Rev Dr. Joe Arun, S.J. opened the Photos of the Dalit leaders from Tamilnadu who fought for the
Dalit rights.
I am grateful to Rev Fr K. Amal, S.J., Rector, Rev Dr Joe Arun, S.J., Secretary, Rev Dr. B.
Jeyaraj, S.J., Principal, Rev. Dr. Arockia Samy, S.J., and Deputy Principal for providing all
necessary support in terms of personnel and infrastructure to accompany and empower the Poor
and the Dalit students through LEADS. I cannot miss thanking the teaching and non-teaching
staff and the students for their invincible support and cooperation.

BLACK FLAG DAY
In support of demanding SC status to Dalit Christians and Muslims, September 9, 2010 was
observed as the Black Flag Day by Loyola College, with a public meeting addressed by eminent
leaders and Church officials. All the speakers unanimously insisted that Religion must be
delinked from caste in order to provide Dalit Christians and Muslims an opportunity to benefit
from the schemes designed to achieve social and economic equality.
Rev.Dr. MJM Mahalingam S.J., Vice Principal and the coordinator of the Black Flag Day noted
that Indian Presidential (Scheduled Caste) Order 1950 restricted this privilege to Scheduled
Castes who belong to Hinduism. It was amended in 1956 and later in 1990 to accommodate SCs
who had converted to Sikhism and Buddhism, the same was not done in the case of Christians
and Muslims. Fr. L.Yesumarian, lawyer and founder of Dr. Ambedkar Centenary Movement,
said the caste system had permeated society that even those forsaking Hinduism were not able to
escape the effects of caste-wise discrimination and segregation. Even within the Catholic Church
discrimination, segregation, and untouchability persists.
Most Rev. Dr. A.M. Chinnappa, S.D.B., D.D., the Archbishop of Madras-Mylapore, said in
addition to aiming to reap the “fruits” of such a caste-based society in terms of reservation and
special status, it was essential to get to the root of the issue and eliminate caste. Most Rev. Dr. V.
Devasahayam Bishop, CSI Diocease of Madras, Most Rev. Dr. Ezra Sargunam, former Minority
Commission chairperson, Rev. Dr. B. Jeyaraj S.J., Principal, Rev.Fr.K.Amal, S.J., Rector,
Rev. Fr. A. Victor, S.J., Chennai Mission Superior, also addressed the students and participated
in the signature campaign, slogan shouting held at the College main gate. T. Pandiyan, state
Secretary, Communist Party of India said that the demand was one of the basic rights. Even with
conversion things do not change at all and caste followed people to the grave. The party would
take up the issues with the Centre and State Governments.
Prof. Parveen Sultana, Lecturer, Basheer Ahmed Syed College for women, said that the Sanchar
Committee report had indicated that not more than five percent of Muslims in the country could
be categorized as “Above Poverty Line.”
Twenty eight thousand signatures were collected from Professors and students and were sent to
all the concerned State and Union Government officials. The Black Flag Day events were widely
covered by the mass media.
Our demands to the union Government
1. Table the National Commission for Religious and Linguistic Minorities report in the
Parliament with Action Taken Report and implement its recommendations.
2. Give favorable reply to the query of the Supreme Court to the Writ Petitions demanding
the deletion of the unjust Para 3 of the Constitution Scheduled Castes Order 1950 to
extend Scheduled Caste Status to Christians and Muslims of Scheduled Caste origin.
SC STATUS to DALIT CHRISTIANS
With the support of Rev Fr Rector, LEADS delegated five professors and five students to take
part in the Dharna which took place in Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, organized by CBCI on July 21,
2010 to demand SC status to Dalit Christians and Muslims.
XAT TRAINING for MBA
Besides this, LEADS inaugurated a training programme in admission tests like XAT, CAT,
MAT, IIFT, etc., as part of empowering the Dalit and poor students through education in
business schools, on November 22, 2010, though the classes started from September 27, 2010.
The training includes acquiring skills in verbal, quantitative, logical reasoning, data
interpretation, group discussion and interviews for 450 hours with a minimum fee of Rs.1800
while Rs.26,000 was collected for 350 hours by private training institute. Regular attendance and
punctuality are insisted, and only those who make normal academic progress in monthly
evaluation will be allowed to participate in the All India Admission Tests. The students who
undergo this training have a bright chance of getting admission in the top 10 business schools
like IIM, XLRI, FMS, LIBA, etc. Nearly 46 students underwent this training in 2010. Today
there are only 37 continuing their training; three dropped out and six other have already written
XAT exam on Jan. 2nd. Last year we conducted training in GD and personal interview for 12
students out of which 8 got admission in LIBA. We immensely thank Rev Dr. M. Devadoss, S.J.,
and the Provincial of Jesuit Madurai Province for the mandate, Rev Fr K. Amal, S.J., Rector, and
Rev Dr P. Christie, S.J., Director, LIBA who extended moral and financial support. More
students are likely to join these trainings in the forthcoming years.

personal, academic). Among them 76 students were guided to get job placements in reputed
institutions as part-time workers.
