The Benefits of Staff Meetings
Staff meetings are a great opportu-nity to push your company to the
next level. They can also eat up lots of valuable time and become a burden to the employees. Addressing what went well and could be improved upon at every meeting is important. When my business was smaller I tried to avoid them, I figured I could supplement with technology and save time. Now as I am
adding new employees these meeting are vital to the successful operation of our company.
Use the staff meeting to provide an overview of the organization. Everyone gets tunnel vision on the tasks they need to complete for the day, week, and month. The meeting is a good way to reset everyone and let them know what the goal is as a collective, and provide feedback on procedures to complete them. This is also a great time to set the culture of how you want the company to run.
Our first formal staff meeting had an agenda about two pages long. We took three hours to go over every single line item that was important to the company. For me as a business owner it was great. I got to touch on many aspects and got feedback from the group. What was not great was that I had seven employees in a meeting with only one or two able to contribute to most topics. That means up to six employees were just sitting not able to contribute and missing tasks they could be doing out in the field. Our first adjustment was to only talk about important issues that could teach a lesson or about which everyone in the room could contribute.
People need to come prepared for the meeting. Attendees should be notified about the topics to be discussed a few days before the actual meeting, so that they can come prepared to contribute to the discussion. A brief summary at the meeting’s end will help to lock in what was learned or decided so that everyone leaves on the same page.
As a team we can analyze and provide input, but all the time-consuming detail work needs to be done after the meeting. The meeting is set to run no longer then one hour. If the topic is important it will be addressed at that time. If it is not addressed, then it probably is not that critical and can be discussed outside the meeting. Because the meeting is only one hour long, it is imperative that there are no distractions. This means no phones or computers unless it is a real emergency.
Team building and leadership should always be part of the meeting. These meetings should be used to energize the team. Our last staff meeting began with everyone high fiving and comple-menting each other. One change we have not yet implemented – but I would like to – is having each team member have their turn serving as the facilitator. This may change the perspective of the meeting to help look at our organization in different ways that may help office staff, management, field employees and our customers.
Staff meetings should be held on a regular basis to keep a rhythm. We hold our meeting every two weeks. Weekly meetings just seemed to consume too much time, but every company is different and you should always do what’s best for your organization. – Luis

Do You Need to Add Soap to Water? By Richard Restuccia, Jain Irrigation
Charles Fishman taught us in The Big Thirst that water can be too clean to drink. The purest water possible is used as an
industrial solvent for high tech manufacturing of computer chips. The ultra-clean water (many steps past reverse osmosis) molecules have a slight negative charge attracting small specks of dirt. The reason we don’t want to drink ultraclean pure water is that it attracts valuable minerals from your body. So if water by itself is so good at cleaning do we need to add soap to our water?
How Does Soap Work?Public health officials tell us washing our hands with soap and clean running water is the key to prevent the spread of germs and infection. Even if the water isn’t clean, using soap will make a difference identifying soap as the number one factor in clean hands. Before determining if we need soap, it’s best to learn how soap works. Most everything around us is made of molecules. Some molecules love water, and some are repelled by water. Oil attracts dirt and grime and is repelled by water. Oil and water don’t mix is a common phrase we all know. Add soap to water, and it forms tiny clusters. The water-loving part of the soap molecule points out, and the water-repelling parts hang together on the inside. The clusters trap the oil on the inside, so they don’t come in contact with water. Soap suspends the oil and dirt, maximizing the rinsing benefit of water.
How Much Soap Should Be Used?
Sometimes it feels like we waste water by having to rinse our hands or dishes to wash off the soap suds. Pre-cleaning your dishes helps save water when cleaning the dishes and pots. Do your best to remove the majority of gunk on your pots and dishes before you use soap. If just oil and grease remain on your dishes and pots, the soap can do its best work in the fastest amount of time lessening the amount of time you need to rinse the grime away with water. Eating a diet lower in oils and fats is also going to help reduce the amount of soap, water, and time needed to wash your dishes.
As far as the amount, it’s variable by the job. How dirty are your hands or dishes? Dawn (makers of Dawn dish soap) teaches us a few drops to a wet sponge to wash dishes is better than adding it to the water.
As far as your hands, all soaps are not equal, and depending on the quality of the soap, the amounts vary. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention wants you to be sure the lather reaches the backs of your hands, between your fingers and under your nails.
Cleaning your hands or dishes without soap is possible, but you will use considerably more water. This water will have to be very hot as well, wasting another precious resource. A little bit of soap saves both water and energy.

Guided by the ‘Actor’ Within
Last month was the Autumn Equinox. This month of October signals a seasonal fall foliage color manifestation. What a
splendid display nature puts on for us – a rewarding change one after another.
Nature has a way that signals that it is a good time to step back and make any necessary changes required in our business and personal lives. I believe there is a personal individual pattern of expression within each one of us. This individual pattern expresses through all creation, and each one of us is woven into the tapestry of all that life is. This is like the thread without which the individuality of the tapestry would be incomplete. I love the idea that we all are co-creators in this thing called life.
I personally believe that there is an Indwelling Spiritual Presence that I know as God that is the “Actor” as to what we think into this spiritual matrix. The answer to this is to be sure of your right thinking. The Actor has only one objective – to act upon exactly what is being thought.
It is up to us to think rightly. All the great teachers in our history knew this. Every great book in all religions taught this, I have found. Even our founding fathers (and mothers) knew of this thinking, I have read.
In remembrance: 18 years ago on 9/11 a horrible tragedy struck the United States of America. It is through this inner spiritual substance that I believe peoples
of many nations went within to bring about a healing presence over time. The abhorrent terrorism that had happened did bring a new wave of solidarity everywhere over time, although it now appears to be slipping away.
I am proud and honored at being an American, a constitutionalist, and a citizen. Terrorism in any form sucks! And, of course, I am opinion-ated! Yet, Love Does and is absolute. – Dave
Be still and listen to the words and feelings behind the words of another. Doing so acknowledges their good. When you talk, you are only repeating what you already know. But, if you listen, you may learn something new. – Dalai Lama
