Summer programs Dirt & Geology

Soil Soiree P|E Get busy looking at what earth is made of with magnifying glasses and meet some

earthworms, pillbugs, and other neighbors that call the soil home. Create a dirt painting like the Korgoho people of Africa,

make edible soil out of crushed cookies, and plant a seed in your own decorated pot

to watch grow this summer. Planting a Rainbow P | E | T Did you know you can make paints from your garden? Try your hand at crushing leaves and colorful vegetables with mortars and pestles for their natural tints, and learn how to use their pigments to paint a masterpiece. Sand is Grand E What’s underground on Long Island? Sand! Become an arenologist and dive into a sandy world with hands-on experiments, and see other types of sand from around the world. Go home with your own colorful sand art! Viva La Volcano! E Get ready to explore one of the most amazing forces of nature – Volcanoes! Discover how underwater volcanoes create new islands in the ocean, touch rock samples of hardened lava, and stand back as you create your own spewing volcano. Sink in room required. Oceans Rock! E Have a blast exploring earth’s natural crystals and minerals – including an ocean crystal that you eat every day (salt!). Find out how beautiful crystals form, touch some minerals, and put on your goggles to crack open your own real geode to take home! 3rd-6th grade, please. Light Rocks E | T Learn about how the world’s first light bulb was made of rocks! Touch a Native American oil lamp made from rock, see Whale Oil and find out how and why people used it, and use clay to fashion your own ancient-style oil-lamp to take home.

Culture & Stories Bullroarer Bash OR Top-Secret Sound E Find out about the world of secret communication that people and animals use! Discover an underground telephone that people have used, from the Inuit to Aboriginals– the bullroarer. Find out how these were made out of whale baleen, meet a hissing animal, learn about whale songs, and design your own whizzing bullroarer. Stars & Stories E Throughout history, people have depended on the stars for direction at night, from sailors at sea to the slave underground. Learn how to recognize star constellations, see a meteorite dust sample, and create your own constellation-viewer. Gross & Gorgeous or Beauty and the Mud E | T Get down and dirty learning about how bones, blubber, and ambergris turned into the most expensive cosmetics, tools and jewelry in the past. Discover how whaling was a part of style and fashion, and learn about some of the strange things that went into favorite luxury items. Create your own perfume scent and homemade lip balm. Gold, Gold, Gold! E Find out about how gold played an important part in America’s history, and why many sailors deserted whaling ships during the Gold Rush. Try your hand at panning for gold, touch Fool’s Gold, excavate your own antique-style gold charm out of rock, and use gold paint to design a box to hold your own treasures! Dig Through a Museum’s Cellar Or Tales & Treasure A The Museum’s collection holds 6,000 artifacts accumulated over the past 70 years. Join us as we bring out our artifacts for you to examine up close, including scrimshaw, and learn more about Long Island’s maritime past and people. Carve your own scrimshaw-style box to keep.

Fossils, Caves, Bones & mummies

Strap on your goggles and excavate your own real fossil to keep. Fossils Alive! E Do you know there are some creatures older than dinosaurs that never went extinct? Learn about living fossils, including sharks! Decorate a habitat for your own real eggs to hatch into tiny, ancient shrimp from the Triassic Age! Parents, we’ll supply a little habitat and food for your tiny, easy pet to grow in (lifespan is 1-2 months). Limit 20 children. Cave Explorers E Get ready to enter the dark, mysterious world of caves and caverns, which oceans and rivers carve out of rock.
