PRESIDENT’S LETTER

The club is alight with holiday cheer this month.

Thank you to all members who helped clean and organize the

club on Nov. 26 to make it look its very best for the

holidays. Special thanks to Christina Gibson and Jon Shogren for

organizing the cleanup event. We truly appreciate all the hard

work and elbow grease that went into making our club shine.

Christiana and her elves have also arrived in the night and

transformed the club into a magical winter wonderland in

preparation for Santa Claus’ arrival on Dec. 17 for the Children’s

Christmas Party.

What better way to enjoy the holiday season than with a warm

mug of Silvia’s Glühwein, a home-cooked meal, great friends

and wonderful music? For this month only, we are waiving the

cover charges for Tuesday Night Jazz with Marsha K Ross and

Thursday 50’s dance nights with Howie Gold. If you have never

attended one of these evenings, now is the perfect time to

check it out and bring a friend. Please note the new time (4-7

p.m.) for Howie’s Thursday night dance, and be sure to make a

reservation for the Early Bird dinner.

Our annual Christmas Dinner is on Saturday, Dec. 16. Don’t

forget to submit your RSVP and payment prior to Dec. 9 so you

don’t miss out on the fun.

BAVARIAN NIGHT

More than 100 people celebrated the 13th annual

Bavarian Night in honor of Elsie Lappoehn, one of five

founders of the German-American Club and the only

one who stayed active and involved until she passed

away in 2013.

Elsie was born in Garmisch, Bavaria, and was very proud

of her heritage. We can thank her to this day for this

wonderful club we enjoy so much. Bavarian Night was

celebrated in Elsie’s honor when she was still alive.

We also paid tribute to Jake Wildey, Gene Gries, Don

Long and all members who passed.

I would like to thank everyone for their help to make

the evening so special and successful. Skip, the

Haxenmeister, and his crew of Art, Les, Jose and Jon did

an outstanding job preparing and roasting the haxen,

and I was happy to prepare the rouladen and sides.

Ingrid Stewart made the Black Forest cake and donated

it to the club. Sigrid Anton from San Diego served 100-

plus dinners. Bartenders Joanne and Christina kept us in

good spirits. Rita Taschner arranged for lots of

community service help. Mary Hyland worked the door,

and Christiana arranged the flowers. Overall, it was a

great evening. Thank you all for your help!

SUNSHINE REPORT

On a sad note, we lost another of our members recently

when Victor Mistretta passed away. He was an avid jazz

night supporter along with his partner, Ruth Wilson.

They attended nearly every Tuesday night, and

supported the big band. The German American Club

extends its deepest sympathy to Victor’s friends and

family.

Ralph Hoiland was in the hospital, but is now home

recuperating and doing well.

Fran Caldwell was in the hospital and is also

recuperating and doing well. The club sends thoughts

and prayers to Fran’s son, who has brain cancer.

Irmgard Petrasek is recuperating from knee surgery and

doing fine.

Chrissy and Eric Lange’s daughter has been released

from the hospital after being shot at the Route 91 music

festival on Oct. 1. We are very thankful for her recovery.

Golf Tournament

We will be having our first handicap golf tournament in

March. It will be a two-day tournament and will require

everyone to have an established handicap or turn in 10

scores on a scorecard to me before the tournament. Call

me if you need help. Having a handicap will put all

golfers on an even competitive footing regardless of

your skill level. We should have a great time! I hope

you’ll join us. I’ll let you know the dates next month.

Thomson-Keefe playing Dec. 9

Patti Thomson and Brian Keefe will play

contemporary adult tunes from the 1960s and

’70s during dinner on Saturday, Dec. 9.

Thomson-Keefe have been playing and singing

together since 1994. Their blend of vocal

harmonies and Keefe’s sweet style of finger-

picking combine to fill the air with easy-listening

songs from such artists as James Taylor,

Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, Neil Young, Jim

Croce and America. You’ll be up and dancing the

night away to your favorite classic rock tunes.

Since moving to Las Vegas in 1997, they have

played at various clubs, casinos, parties and

conventions including McMullan’s Irish Pub, Ellis

Island, Mt. Charleston, Aces & Eights, J.C.

Wooloughan’s Irish Pub and Brendan’s Irish

Pub.
