FROM THE FOUNDER’S DESKWith the festive season around the corner, it is befitting to examine our culture and heritage through our traditional games. Part of India’s ancient culture is the traditional games intensely enmeshed in the culture of each region.

One striking difference between the previous generations and the current one is the type of sports played. Kids today predominantly play sports like cricket, tennis, basketball and football, while previous generations played a variety of indoor and outdoor games like Kabaddi, Kho-kho, Goli, and Ghilli. These games have a rich cultural and heritage value and were often tools of passing on ances-tral knowledge.

Traditional Games were designed in such a way that one could develop skills like logical thinking, building strategy, concentration, basic mathematics, aiming, and many more. Traditional Games act as learning aids. They teach many life-skills like handling defeat, developing sensory skills, counting, addition, improving motor skills amongst others while ensuring that the players still have fun.

LeapStart has done extensive research to ensure that these important learnings are not lost in modern-day sport and we have ensured that our curriculum incorporates all these values in our games and activities.

The values that we imbibe by playing these games are more as compared to most games that are played nowadays. These games give people a chance to learn about our culture and history and most importantly cut across age-groups, increasing the interaction between generations. Many modern day games played around the world have their origin in these traditional games, a proud fact for every Indian!

BENEFITS OF DANCE:Dancing has manifold advantages and contributes immensely to the improvement of the child, thereby enhancing all types of skills that are required for a more rounded education. Research has shown that dancing boosts a child’s self-esteem and enhances their confidence. Dancing helps children improve their overall memory through remembering steps as well as improves listening skills. Dancing imbibes social skills in children and teaches them how to interact with their peers in a positive and a non-competitive manner. By participating in dance events, children experience what it is to participate in collaborative group endeavors and to truly work as a team.

T20 Cricket Innovations: 1) Switch Hit: Made famous by Kevin Pietersen, he switches his stance to the opposite to play on his off side. However, it remains one of the most thrilling shots in world cricket.

2) Dil Scoop: One of the most dangerous shots to attempt is the ‘Dil-scoop.’ This is Tillakaratne Dilshan’s trademark shot where he goes on his knees and scoops the ball over the wicket-keeper’s head. It is a risky shot as there is a danger of either playing it on your own body or missing it altogether.

3) Mongoose Bats: The Mongoose bats are an evolution to the conventional ones which are used regularly, as these have a longer handle and a shorter blade. The Mongoose’s blade is 33% shorter and its handle 43% longer than a regular bat.

4) Helicopter Shot: A stroke played by swinging the bat in an "uppercut" fashion so that it catches the ball partly from below; in the follow-through the bat flails up and round vertically. The shot was named after Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who frequently uses the shot.

5) Carrom Ball: Ajantha Mendis. To bowl a "carrom ball" in cricket, the ball is held between the thumb, forefinger and the middle finger, and instead of a regular release, the ball is squeezed out of the fingers.
