ABOUT US

“Learn English with apps”: the purpose of this project was to make students test and write

about apps that can help them improve their English language skills. The project aimed at

taking advantage of a powerful and engaging learning tool – the students’ smartphone.

Considering the huge amount of apps everywhere, the project wanted to make students test

some of them (chosen by the teachers) for some time and see if they were effective or not.

The final products of this project are 2 digital magazines, logos and some posters. Twinspace

and Google Docs were used by students and teachers, allowing everyone to work in the same

shared files.

I really like “Practise English Grammar”. It´s very useful and interesting. It has a great variety of

grammar exercises where we can develop our reading and writing skills. It has some courses. The

articles and tests included in course 1 cover 5 lessons and a variety of topics; such as nouns,

adjectives, interrogative words, tenses and many more. It hasn’t sound but the graphics are amazing.

It loads quickly. The directions are clear and simple to follow. It hasn’t got any advertising. The

method is motivating, very captivating and appealing.

NEGATIVE ASPECTS

Some games are bugged because we get a blank screen when we click “play”. Most of the courses are

paid.

The app has good exercises about grammar and tenses. It has a funny quiz. It has a good variety of

exercises and videos. The videos have four areas (grammar, vocabulary, speaking and writing).

The speaking is good because it has many subjects (basic, transport, drinking, health, hotel,

entertainment, interview and office). The app teaches grammar, vocabulary, tenses and other things.

The directions are clear and simple to follow.

It has several levels of difficulty (beginner / intermediate / advanced). It´s not difficult to use.

It´s a light app.

I really enjoyed my app. It is very complete because you can improve your listening and writing

skills and it has a great variety of exercises. With this app you can learn some vocabulary and then

solve some exercises about it and it has many different courses to do such as courses about dating

phrases, travelling or medicine.

The appearance is very appealing and motivating too and it has a really good sound. Another great

aspect of this app is that it doesn’t have any advertising.

NEGATIVE ASPECTS

The app doesn’t crash but sometimes I want to play and I can’t do that because I need internet to

download the courses. In the beginning it was hard to understand how the app worked because of

the large number of courses and different exercises. Listening to a Brazilian voice all the time is a

little boring and it is really hard to write the answers because the buttons are really small and the

space between them is small too.

This app has some positive aspects. It’s a good way to learn how to speak English and it’s very helpful

when we’re talking about listening skills. It has many levels of difficulty (from elementary to

advanced). The app includes daily conversations, in different levels of difficulty, which is great. It also

has an irregular verb table and short stories, both supported with audio. In the listening exercises,

we understand very well what is being said, so that is an advantage. The directions are very clear and

simple, so we can use this app very easily. It can recognize our pronunciation and it says if it is good

or bad. It has a great variety of exercises, such has a lot of listening tests, so we can develop our

listening and vocabulary skills.

It doesn’t crash.

NEGATIVE ASPECTS

I didn’t like this app that much because it’s boring. At the beginning it’s interesting, but after a short

time it becomes very heavy and annoying. In some exercises it has a lot of text and the texts aren’t

translated, so people who don’t understand English very well will struggle. It has some advertising

and it is not very appealing.

The app aims to practice speaking and listening skills. The app is very good to practice our

pronunciation. The sound is very good; we can understand what is being said. It has a lot of short

stories easy to advanced), daily talks (easy to advanced), a category dedicated to the most common

expressions (by topics and A-Z) other dedicated to “necessary idioms” and phrasal verbs and

another one dedicated to irregular verbs; the app also offers listening tests and a sentence building

game.

NEGATIVE ASPECTS

The appearance of the app needs some work, because the way it is organized is a bit confusing and

could be better. Unfortunately the app becomes uninteresting after a short time. It has some

annoying advertising. I have to download the texts when I want to hear them for the first time so we

need some space in our memory card.

It doesn’t have bugs and it loads quickly. It also has an explanation for all verb tenses.

NEGATIVE ASPECTS

I find this app very boring. The logo does scream fun and “Hi, I’m very fun and educative, download

me!”. It really does, but then the content isn’t that much educative and it’s very simple and plain.

I also think that it’s too easy. The only thing that we can do in the app is pick a conversation and then

listen to it. It’s very unattractive and it leaves us with no motivation to keep using it because of being

so boring and calm and so not funny and unappealing.

It has only 2 levels of difficulty, organized by topics, and we can pick our favourite conversations and

fix them on our ”timeline”, which isn’t that much useful and the space that this option uses could be

used for something more interesting and educative, it could be an option that could help us with our

grammar. It has conjugated verbs and tenses, common sentences & expressions and sentence topics,

but they’re very boring because we can only listen to them, it doesn't have any exercise for us to do

and practice. In the conversations, the easy level is very very basic and I find the conversations

really silly: It has conversations about greasy hair and Chinese dumplings.

In my opinion, it should contain conversations about school, about the subjects, or conversations

that we will have during our work or free time.

I will definitely not keep using it.

Ok, I don’t like the app, but I have to say that it’s at least easy to use (since we don’t do anything) and it does not have ads (I didn't have the internet connection on when I used so I don’t really know). And if you count conversations as exercises, they do have a good variety, the “main attraction” are the conversations, but I also have conversation topics; expressions; idioms and phrases; a list of irregular verbs and tenses so it teaches vocabulary and a tiny bit of grammar. The graphics aren’t awful but they're not a graceful and majestic swan as well. Since I can’t listen to anything, I will just suppose that the sounds aren’t very good. At least the directions are simple, it just has a main page with some divisions, each one has one “exercise”, for example, if we choose Conversations Easy Level, it will take us to a page full of topics for different conversations. Another good thing is the fact that we have different levels for conversations and it loads quickly. It does not crash, and the only bug I consider is the sound not working.

NEGATIVE ASPECTS

I didn’t really like the app, I don’t think it helped me at all, maybe it works with beginners but for someone who has a decent English, it’s not helpful at all, therefore, the method doesn’t work and the only thing that motivated me were the ridiculous names they use because the real names are proprietary, for example, Taylor Swifty instead of Taylor Swift or Facepost instead of Facebook. Obviously, I will stop using it! In my opinion, reading conversations isn’t helpful, as I think that the best way to improve our skills on a foreign language is to talk, and actually be on a conversation, not listening to them! The app shows us several conversations but you are supposed to listen to them while we’re reading, but mine never worked! Every time I pressed the play button, it passed straight to the end of the recording and didn’t let me listen! So I got bored and lost motivation quickly. I guess we can say it’s repetitive since they have tons of dialogues so it’s kind of limited.

The app has a very good English level, there are 3 types of levels, easy, intermediate and advanced.

The app design is average, it could be better. It also has voice exercises, to help you with listening

and speaking. The app also has many options in it; instead of just 5 options is has more than that. In

my opinion I would download this app and use it one day. The app doesn't take ages to download

and it runs very quickly, even in horrible phones or tablets.

The app is for free and there is no risk when downloading it.

I would rate it 4 stars.

The negative aspects aren't that many since I've found that there are only 2, those are the

configurations where there are 2 options, and there are a lot of advertisements in it. But the app

needs more options like completing exercises instead of reading, speaking exercises instead of

listening. Some of the topics are very big texts, so I suggest to make them shorter, because it will be a

lot to read. Besides this, the app doesn't even have images.

This app is very good for people who want to learn vocabulary. The app has two levels of difficulty, the

easy level and the difficult level.

In the easy level you have to choose the missing letter, in the difficult level you do the same thing but

this time you have to choose two missing letters in the word. In the game you can choose the 10

question quiz, the 15 question quiz and the 20 question quiz and you have 10 seconds to complete

each one.

It is also possible to select categories like animals, countries, plants, surroundings, vehicles, foods and

cities.

It is a little bit boring because the game is always the same and the words are quite repetitive.

The app doesn´t have images, sounds or videos and that is bad because the apps with images, sound or

videos motivate people to use them.

This game is interesting, it is colourless and it has big letters. The game has settings, high score,

instructions and leaderboard. The game is very fast but easy. We have 2 difficulty levels, Easy and

Difficult, we have 7 category selections, animals, countries, plants, surrounding, vehicles, foods and

city. We have different Quiz sizes - 10, 15 and 20- too. To have access to the Leader Board we need to

create an account in swarm. The instructions are very explicit! One of the good things is that the

application does not have advertising. It is a good app to improve my English.

It is not a very motivating game, there are some things I did not like, for example the time - it is very

fast, some words aren’t easy. In my opinion, the easy level isn’t that easy. The application is not as

good to learn English as it is to spend your time! ;)

This app is very interesting. It has a loud sound and a good and cosy appearance. It works very well

but it’s not motivating. The app is about building words with letters that are in the squares below.

The app is easy to use, but sometimes it’s too difficult to build words. It loads super quickly, what is

awesome. It has three levels of difficulty, the “3 Letter Word”, the “4 Letter Word” and the “5 Letter

Word”. It has two levels too that are named “Word in quotes” and “Word picture”. The first one is to

complete the quotes and the second one is to name the pictures above, that are about animals,

Disney characters, fruit, etc. The app intends to teach vocabulary. For me, it hasn’t developed any

skills. I will not keep using it, despite the positive aspects.

NEGATIVE ASPECTS

The app is boring. It sometimes crashes. It has much advertising too, that is very annoying to close

because of the tiny close bottom. The sound is super annoying after a while using the app. I lost

motivation after a short time, because it has nothing new. It’s too repetitive, and we lose all the

points if we lose once. It hasn’t a long variety of exercises, it´s almost the same thing every time. It’s

not appealing.

This app has a good appearance and it is interesting in the beginning but after some time it becomes

boring.

In the menu we have a choice to play or to learn how to play, then when we choose to play we have

five categories: “three letter word”, “four letter word”, “five letter word”; these three are the three

levels of difficulty. “Word in quotes”, in this one we have to build a word to complete sentences and in

“word picture” we have a picture that we have to name.This app loads very quickly. This app only has

advertising when we have the wi-fi on. This app doesn't have bugs. The graphics are good.

NEGATIVE ASPECTS

This app doesn´t have a good variety of exercises it´s just the same thing but with more letters, it´s too

repetitive, nothing new. This app just has an annoying sound when we win or lose and because of that

it becomes boring and we lose motivation after a short period of time. Sometimes this app crashes.

When we lose we lose many points. I will not keeping using it.

This application is a good method because I can learn English through your favorite songs. Thanks to

this that there are texts I can follow the pronunciation for of vocabulary and spelling.

For me this application is not very good but there are some positive aspects.

This app is divided into 4 topics. In the topics there are different categories: speaking; listening;

reading; writing; vocabulary; grammar and pronunciation. It’s all in videos and some are fun.

Other interesting aspect is that the videos are divided in different levels of difficulty: basic,

intermediate and advanced.

NEGATIVE ASPECTS

This app also has negative aspects, as it can be confusing and boring because there are many videos,

however, some are fun.

POSITIVE ASPECTS

This is a very good app for people who want to practise or learn English out of class.

It has got more than 1200 vocabulary words picked by an expert tutor and audio pronunciation for

each of the word in the app.

If you are a little young or just can´t understand the English teacher you can try the lower level,

every sections have different vocabulary levels.

Like the basic, intermediate and advanced and it is also fun to beat levels to unlock new words.

Track your progress as you study.

NEGATIVE ASPECTS

If you play it for like 30 minutes you will be bored and you will probably uninstall the app.

When you can't pass through to the next level you lose interest.

The app could have different types of ways to play it but unfortunately it only has one.

And the thing that I really didn't like is that you can only play if you are connected to the internet

and that's really annoying. It needs new updates.

English.

I think that this app is very strange and confusing. It’s very boring and I couldn’t understand much.

In fact, the app gives a word and you have to choose a synonym but they are always the same words.

This app has many levels but I was really disappointed because I thought that was going to be a

really good app. This app is like some kind of memory game and the levels are too hard... even the

easiest one.

I think this app is very useful for the ones who are curious about learning English. There is a video in

every part to improve your listening & speaking. When you start watching the video, there is an

English translation below the video. When the video is over, there is a Turkish translation of the

speech. There are levels too, so if you want to move on to the next level, you have to listen to more

videos. So you can improve not only your grammar but also listening & speaking.

NEGATIVE ASPECTS

There is nothing except for the video. This makes the app boring and the app sends lot of

notifications but all of them are ads. I think this app can be more useful.
