Hope in Conflict: Discovering Wisdom in Congregational Turmoil
Rev. Dr. David R. Sawyer and Rev. Dr. Deborah G. Fortel
Friday, June 18, 2010
MORNING WORKSHOP – 9:00 a.m. University Presbyterian Church – Room 4
Consultants will lead a Workshop for members of the Committee on Ministry and the Pastoral
Care Team of the Presbytery. The Workshop will focus on a basic introduction to conflict
utilization using the book Hope in Conflict and will consist of three parts:
Thinking systemically about the sources of conflict in congregations
The importance of a hopeful, positive frame for conflict, based on careful discernment
(looking at structures, listening for stories and learning from symptoms) rather than quick
fixes,
Guidelines for COM and Pastoral Care providers for early identification and intervention
in conflict situations.
FRIDAY AFTERNOON ASSEMBLY WORKSHOP – 3:30 p.m. Parker Chapel
Consultants will make a presentation on a hopeful approach to
conflict in the church with illustrations of churches that have
come through very powerful conflicts with transformative
results.
Consultants will lead the presbytery assembly through a series
of small-group conversations and talk back to encourage
pastors and leaders to begin to experience conflict in a more
hopeful way.
About the speakers:
Deborah and David have been learning, teaching,
collaborating, and writing together since 1988. From the
Conflict Mediation Team of Giddings-Lovejoy Presbytery in
St. Louis, where the methods of Hope in Conflict were
developed, they led training in systems thinking in
judicatories around the country, taught interim ministry education, and served in interim and
installed positions. Relocation to Minneapolis from 1991-2002 to follow Deborah’s call further
energized their involvement in making churches healthier. Since moving to Louisville, where
David has served as Professor and Director of Lifelong Learning at Louisville Seminary,
Deborah has served three interims and a stint at the Presbyterian Headquarters staffing the
Committee on Ministry office.

CONFLICT RESOLUTION WORKSHOP
Siri Bletzer, M.A., LPC, LMFT
This is a two hour workshop focusing on constructive ways to address the
conflicts which often exist between individuals and individuals in groups.
Participants will learn to delineate the four communication styles and learn
strategies for being more assertive. Participants will gain knowledge of how
to view conflict as “a contribution system,” and how to use the three
conversations present in each difficult conversation to resolve conflict. They
will also receive tips on building their skill set to improve communication.
Part I: Description and contrast of the four main communication styles.
Examples and modes of delivery of aggressive, passive, passive-aggressive,
and assertive styles will be discussed. The issue of bullying will be
addressed while discussing the aggressive style. Emphasis will be placed on
the assertiveness stance, which is the most favorable and productive form of
communication. Ways to develop assertiveness will be presented.
Part II: Viewing conflict as “a contribution system.”
Based on the strategies from The Harvard Negotiation Project, a description
of the three conversations that occur in each difficult conversation will be
explained in order to move toward a win-win situation. Understanding that
conflict is normal and complex, how our past may influence what we pay
attention to, and learning to choose and access information differently will
also be presented. Improving self-accountability as well as learning how to
hold others accountable will be addressed.
Part III: Tips for resolving conflict and discord. Guidelines for negotiating differences such as role-playing, knowing our
own “hot buttons,” understanding that some people enjoy conflict, and
utilizing a time-out if necessary will be discussed. The benefits and power of
prayer when working on dissolving discord will also be stated.
Narrative Budget Workshop Noon - 12:45
Friday - June 18, 2010
Trinity University – Room 110
What: A workshop on narrative budgets for particular churches
By: The Stewardship Division of Mission Presbytery
Why: To provide information that would
1) Help a church decide whether to pursue a narrative budget
2) To explain the steps necessary to develop one
When: Noon on June 18 (before the Mission Presbytery Meeting)
Duration: 45 minutes
Price: Free
RSVP: Please drop me an email so I can make enough handouts.
Contact: Eldon Sheffer, Director of Church Relations at Schreiner University
[email protected], 830-792-7427
Explanation: A “narrative budget” is a way of looking at church activities and costs by function.
The emphasis is on the ways we serve the Lord through the things we do. The “narrative
budget” is used in place of a line item budget and moves the focus to mission.
Background: Most of the members of churches do not have a financial background and they
may have difficulty understanding the church budget. In addition, a line item budget emphasizes
costs instead of ministries so the mission of the church may get lost in the numbers.
Workshop: This workshop will introduce the concepts of the Narrative Budget and explain the
steps to follow to develop a narrative budget for your church.
Note: Mission Presbytery is developing a narrative budget which will be explained at the
presbytery meeting.

WORKSHOP TOPICS
Parents as Primary Spiritual Nurturer of Their ChildrenKaren-Marie Yust
If the church only sees the children several hours a week (at most) how can we equip parents to nurture their children in the faith the rest of the time?
Intergenerational Ministry Holly Allen
What’s the diff erence between segmenting the church by age groups and off ering ministry for, with, and to all ages together?
Parenting in the PewRobbie Castleman
What tools can the church give parents to help them guide their children in worship? Why is this important?
Family ‘round the TableFamily game nights are popular as families try to build quality time into their busy lives. This workshop looks at building times for families to intentionally gather together at home to support the spiritual growth of family members - what this could look like and resources to help it be successful.
From Urgency to Action: Eff ective Ministry with ChildrenDialogue regarding one of the most important challenges
facing our society today: the moral and spiritual development of our children. The confl uence of voices - from both the secular and sacred - is clear about the need for action.
God & You & MeExplores the building of relationships in the church. This highlights the ways in which interpersonal relationships refl ect God’s plan, the basics of relationship dynamics, and the ways in which Jesus is a perfect role model for our relationships and recommends key steps for building strong relationships in our lives.
Conversation for ClergyPastors and LOGOS leaders in a round-table dialog discussing the needs and desires of churches and LOGOS, and working together to meet those needs.
Exploring LOGOSFor “inquiring churches” to see and hear information about the LOGOS ministry, consider some questions for their church about children’s ministry, learn how to proceed toward more eff ective children’s ministry and possibly implementing a weekly LOGOS ministry.
Panel Discussion – Intergenerational WorshipPanelists: David Kinnaman; Karen-Marie Yust; Holly Allen; Robbie Castleman & Dr. Allan Cole
What does it mean to engage all ages in worship? Is there a fear of “dumbing down” worship? Is it more than just off ering a children’s message and having the kids sing for the congregation?
