Whatisachord?
Achordisseveralnotesplayedtogether.Therearethreenotechords(triads),fournotechordsandfivenotechords.Thereareactuallyevenchordswithsixorsevennotesbutinthiscasesomeofthenotesareusuallyremoved.
Differentchords
Major:acommontriadiscommonlywrittenonlybythenameoftherootinthechord.ForexampleC,includingthenotesCEG.
Minor:thecommonversionofminoriscommonlywrittenwiththenamefollowedbya"m"(shortforminor).ForexampleCm,includingCEbG.
7:whenthenumbersevenisfollowingthenameofthenoteitisadominantseventhchord.Aminorseventhisaddedandmakeitafournotechord.ForexampleC7,includingCEGBb.

sus:isanabbreviationforsuspension.Herethethirdisreplacedbyeitherthefournote(sus4)orthesecondnote(sus2)inthescale.ForexampleCsus4,includingCFGandCsus2,includingCDG.
Withtheknowledgeaboutthecategoriesofchordsexplainedaboveyouwillbefamiliarwiththemostchordsyoucouldstumbleupon.Thereishoweverevenmorecategoriesandsomelessercommonchordsare:

Invertedchords
Invertedchordsareverycommonandmeanthatthenotesinachordareshiftingpositions.Ifwetaketriadsasanexample,therearetwoinversionspossible.Thefirstinversionusesthesecondnoteasbassnoteandthesecondinversionusesthethirdnoteasbassnote.Theoriginalchord,CMajorisconstructedCEG.Firstinversion,C/EisconstructedEGC.Secondinversion,C/GisconstructedGCE.
Chordsinpractice
Exactlyhowyouplaychordswilldependonmanydifferentthings:areyouplayingsolo,togetherwithasingerorainfullband?Ifyouplaysolo,youprobablywillplaychordswithyourlefthandandthemelodywithyourright.Ifyouareaccompanyingasinger,youwouldfocuslessonthemelodynotesandperhapssplitupthechordsonbothyourhands.Andfinally,ifyouwouldbeplayingwithabandyouwouldprobablyneedtoplayfewernotes.
