In this tutorial, we will cover the cable technique. A cable is a design feature that creates a rope-like twist in the knitting. The twist is created with the aid of a cable needle and the slant of the cable is achieved by the way we cross the stitches from the cable needle.

Although they may seem difficult, cables are actually quite simple, take them step- by-step with this tutorial and you will be creating aran designs in a jiffy!

Cable Techniques Loom Knitting Techniques

Left Cross (LC)—done over 2 stitches Step 1: Take working yarn behind peg 1 (you are

skipping peg 1).



Step 2: Knit peg 2 and place stitch on cable needle and hold it to the center of the loom.



Step 3: Move stitch from peg 1 to peg 2 (leaving peg 1 empty).



Step 4: Place stitch from cable needle on peg 1.



Step 5: Knit peg 2.



Cable Techniques Loom Knitting Techniques

Right Cross (RC)—done over 2 stitches

Step 1: Place stitch from peg 1 on cn and hold to the center of the knitting loom.



Step 2: Take working yarn in front of peg 2 and knit peg 2.



Step 3: Move stitch from peg 2 to peg 1.



Step 4: Place stitch from cn on peg 2.



Step 5: Knit peg 2.



These two cable crossings are similar to the ones above, except one of the crossed stitches gets purled instead of knitted.



Left/Front Cross Purl (LCP/FCP)

Step 1: Take working yarn behind peg 1, then to the front of peg 2. (You are skipping peg 1 and leaving it unworked). Purl peg 2.



Step 2: Transfer stitch from peg 2 to cable needle.



Step 3: Move stitch from peg 1 to peg 2.



Step 4: Transfer stitch from cable needle to peg 1.



Step 5: Knit peg 2.



Right/Back Cross Purl (RCP/BCP)

Step 1: Transfer stitch from peg 1 to cable needle and hold towards the center of the loom (peg 1 is now empty).



Step 2: knit peg 2 then move this loop to peg 1.



Step 3: Transfer stitch from cable needle to peg 2 Step 4: Purl the stitch on peg 2.



3-stitch cables



3-st RC—done over 3 stitches

Step 1: Place stitch from peg 1 to cn and hold to center of knitting loom.



Step 2: Knit peg 2 and peg 3.



Step 3: Move the stitches from pegs 2 and 3 to pegs peg 1 and peg 2.



Step 4: Place the stitch from cn on peg 3. Knit peg 3.



3-st LC—done over 3 stitches

Step 1: Take working yarn behind pegs 1 and 2 (you are skipping pegs 1 and 2).



Step 2: Knit peg 3. Place stitch from peg 3 onto cn.



Step 3: Knit peg 1 and peg 2. Move them over to pegs 2 and 3 as follows: Stitch from peg 2 to peg 3, stitch from peg 1 to peg 2.



Step 4: Place stitch from cable needle onto peg 1.



The next two crossing of cables are the same as the two above, except the crossing stitch is purled rather than knitted (refer to illustrations above for aid).

3-st RPC—done over 3 stitches

Step 1: Place stitch from peg 1 onto cn and hold it to center of the knitting loom. Step 2: Take working yarn in front of cable needle and knit pegs 2 and 3. Step 3: Transfer these stitches to pegs 1 and 2 as follows: stitch from peg 2 to peg 1, stitch from peg 3 to peg 2. Step 4: Place stitch from cn onto peg 3 and purl the stitch.

3-st LPC—done over 3stitches Step 1: Take working yarn behind pegs 1 and 2 (you are skipping pegs 1 and 2). Step 2: Purl peg 3; place stitch on cn. Step 3: Take working yarn to the front of peg 1. Knit pegs 1 and 2. Step 4: Transfer the stitches as follows: loop from peg 2 to peg 3, loop from peg 1 to peg 2 Step 5: Place stitch from cn onto peg 1.



4 Stitch Cables 4-st LC—done over 4 stitches



Step 1: Take working yarn behind pegs 1 and 2 (you are skipping pegs 1 and 2).



Step 2: Knit pegs 3 and 4, transfer these stitches to cable needle



Step 3: Take working yarn to the front of the cable needle, knit pegs 1 and 2.



Step 4: Transfer the stitches as follows: stitch from peg 2 to peg 4, stitch from peg 1 to peg 3.



Step 5: Transfer the stitches from the cable needle and place them on pegs 1 and 2.

With your knitting tool, gently, pull on the stitches to pull out any slack of yarn and tighten thestitches.



4-st RC—done over 4 stitches



Step 1: Place stitches from pegs 1 and 2 onto cable needle and hold to the center of the loom.



Step 2: Bring yarn in front of cable needle, knit pegs 3 and 4.



Step 3: Transfer the stitches just worked as follows: Stitch from peg 3 to peg 1, stitch from peg 4 to peg 2.



Step 4: Transfer stitches from cable needle to pegs 3 and 4. Knit pegs 3 and 4.

With your knitting tool, gently, pull on the stitches to pull out any slack of yarn and tighten the stitches.
