Establishing Professional Practice 21/01/13
Week 1 Module name: Design & Materials Timetable hours: 450 minutes Hours attended: No timetabled lessons (Reading week) Additional hours: 780 minutes What I expect to achieve: By the end of this week I expect that my ‘new materials’ presentation should be almost complete so that I can make any amendments if needed. What have I achieved? I did my research mainly on the Internet because I did not have much time to look at books. I managed to put together a presentation but I could not finish it by the end of the week. There was not much left to do so I worked on it over the weekend. Did I visit any galleries to further my knowledge? I visited three galleries while on holiday in Sweden: Konstmuseum (Vasteras), Arkitekturmuseet and Moderna Museet (both in Stockholm). Visiting these galleries was very personal to me and also very inspiring. It was a great reminder of why I aspire to be a designer. It also exposed me to new perspectives of architectural design and artistic expressions of another culture. What do I think/feel about my achievements? I am satisfied with my presentation and wish I could research every single ‘new material’ that I came across but there are just too many and time is a constraint. Hence, I decided to limit myself to those that appealed to me. What did I learn this week? I learned a lot this week especially about ‘new materials’ and life in Sweden. My research focused on Silica Aerogel, Alphamesh, Dichrolam, Carbon Fiber, and Litracon, and I briefly looked at a few others. What will I do next...? I will present my findings to my peers and think about how I can incorporate my findings into my model. I really like Alphamesh, Dichrolam and Carbon Fiber as they offer so many design possibilities both now and in the future. Hence, I might consider them for my model. Find below some photographs from the three galleries that I visited.
